Opponents of NAPLAN would deny parents and students information that sits in a bigger picture. They would deny schools that chance to identify others from which they might usefully learn. Worse, they claim that NAPLAN is creating "test-driven schooling". That is nonsense. Students take NAPLAN tests for a few hours over three days every second year from years 3 to 9 — a very small amount of time. If teachers burden students with numerous practice tests they are wasting time for students and themselves. The best way for students to develop literacy and numeracy is through a rich curriculum. These skills are developed everywhere that students read, write and work with quantitative information — in history, geography, the arts, science and not only in English and mathematics.

A Chinese-citizen engineer recently came to the United States on a month-long business assignment. He was excited, and so was his company. For the company, this was the first-ever foreign installation of new robotic equipment, in a Florida juice-packing operation. For the engineer, it was a chance to be in a very nice part of America, enjoying for a while a lifestyle simply unavailable in his normal environs.
