Decades-old PGP bug allowed hackers to spoof just about anyone’s signature | Ars Technica
CVE-2018-12020 affects vulnerable software only when it enables a setting called verbose, which is used to troubleshoot bugs or unexpected behavior. None of the vulnerable programs enables verbose by default, but a variety of highly recommended configurations available online—including the cooperpair safe defaults, Ultimate GPG settings, and Ben's IT-Kommentare—turn it on. Once verbose is enabled, Brinkmann's post includes three separate proof-of-concept spoofing attacks that work against the previously mentioned tools and possibly many others.

Europe's GDPR Is Killing Email Marketing, to the Disappointment of No One
Under GDPR, companies are still free to send emails to customers who have purchased a product from them in the past, but they can’t continue to solicit the attention of non-customers without first asking for permission. That’s a bit of a killer for marketers, who collect email addresses in all sorts of ways beyond just making sales. Emails acquired through those annoying little pop-up messages for mailing lists, promises of special offers, or purchased from another marketer—those all have to stop unless the recipient opts in to continue getting them.

Inside the private event where Microsoft, Google, Salesforce and other rivals share security secrets – GeekWire
“At this point in the development of this technology it’s really critical for us to move at speed to all collaborate,” explained Mark Russinovich, the Microsoft Azure chief technology officer. “A customer of Google is also likely a customer of Microsoft, and it does nobody any good or gives anybody a competitive disadvantage to keep somebody else’s customer, which could be our own customer, insecure. This is for the betterment of everybody, the whole community.”

The court’s decision to let AT&T and Time Warner merge is ridiculously bad - The Verge
The judge does not understand that HBO Now and Netflix are both accessed by consumers in the exact same ways.
Judge Leon quotes Randall Stephenson calling this a “vision deal.” Twice.
AT&T points out — correctly! — that it wants to see more people use more data generally, so it’s fine with other video services.
But the government never makes the argument that AT&T will use its network to prioritize Time Warner content and services over competitors.
The judge doesn’t figure this out.

State of the Site: Metafilter financial update and future directions | MetaTalk
Right now, because of recent steep drops in ad revenue, we're running at an $8,000/month deficit. I'm bringing this to you all now because we need to fix that shortfall soon to avoid significant cuts to our current payroll levels. We're still operating as normal right now thanks to the cushion members built up last fall, and that and conservative budgeting have worked as intended: it's given us a few more months of leeway to work on the problem, so we can consider our options and make smart, non-panicky decisions. But we need to get to work on it ASAP.

"Together, Winfrey and Apple will create original programs that embrace her incomparable ability to connect with audiences around the world," the company said in a statement Friday. "Winfrey's projects will be released as part of a lineup of original content from Apple."
Apple did not specify whether Winfrey would appear in any of the shows, but she is expected to have an on-screen role as a host and interviewer. The company also declined to discuss financial aspects of the deal.
Apple said the deal will not affect Winfrey's contract with OWN, the television network she launched in 2011. Winfrey recently extended her contract there through 2025.

Trump Orders Government to Stop Work on Y2K Bug, 17 Years Later - Bloomberg
The Trump administration announced Thursday that it would eliminate dozens of paperwork requirements for federal agencies, including an obscure rule that requires them to continue providing updates on their preparedness for a bug that afflicted some computers at the turn of the century. As another example, the Pentagon will be freed from a requirement that it file a report every time a small business vendor is paid, a task that consumed some 1,200 man-hours every year.

Tanzania orders all unregistered bloggers to take down their sites | Reuters
DAR ES SALAAM (Reuters) - Tanzania ordered all unregistered bloggers and online forums on Monday to suspend their websites immediately or face criminal prosecution, as critics accuse the government of tightening control of internet content.

Several sites, including popular online discussion platform Jamiiforums, said on Monday they had temporarily shut down after the state-run Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) warned it would take legal action against all unlicensed websites.

Regulations passed in March made it compulsory for bloggers and owners of other online forums such as YouTube channels to register with the government and pay up to $900 for a license. Per capita income in Tanzania is slightly below $900 a year.

Goodbye to net neutrality. Hello to an even-bigger AT&T? - The Washington Post
I think this could be a one-two punch to consumers and online competition,” said Gene Kimmelman, the president of Public Knowledge, a D.C.-based public interest group. “The combination of no net neutrality and video consolidation creates new bottlenecks that empower the traditional media industry to raise prices and limit online competition.”
