Hayao Miyazaki’s favorite children’s books
Back in 2010, legendary Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki picked his 50 favorite books for children and young adults. Here are the top five:

1. The Borrowers by Mary Norton
2. The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
3. Children of Noisy Village by Astrid Lindgren
4. When Marnie Was There by Joan G. Robinson
5. Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome

It’s easy to see the influence of the books from the list on the movies he made. Indeed, two of the top five books were actually made into Studio Ghibli films (The Borrowers and When Marnie Was There).

P.S. The Totoro / Little Prince illustration is from Pinterest, but I couldn’t find the original source. Anyone?

These aesthetically pleasing “fruit cards” look good enough to eat / Boing Boing
On her Vegan-themed Instagram account Tropically Lina, Lina Saber uploads a delightful series called “fruit cards” where she arranges produce on paint card-style displays. I find these immensely satisfying to look at.

Even though it is the first of four Neapolitan Novels, finishing My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante left me bereft – or, as my nine-year-old self once said, “end-of-book lonely”. Also it left me feeling guilty: I galloped through the last 60 pages in much the same way I often eat food – greedily and not really chewing properly. What happened between Fernando and Silvio Solara? Why was Marcello wearing the shoes Stefano bought? Answers – and no doubt more questions – would come with book two, which could be bought from the English bookshop near the Spanish steps... It was only 4:30pm: I had more than enough time to get there. Or was that hasty? I would read the last 40 pages again. On the train to Naples.

Nigel Slater’s ham, apricots and dill recipe | Life and style | The Guardian
Salty ham, sweet apricots and fresh fronds of dill – weeknight perfection

Halve 6 apricots and remove their stones. Melt 40g of butter in a shallow pan, add the apricots and let them cook over a moderate heat for 4 or 5 minutes until tender. Carefully lift them out on to a plate.
