Rookie class was stellar, but Ronald Acuna Jr. may shine brightest in long run
5. Walker Buehler
We saw in the postseason that this kid has as good stuff as any starter in the majors, with an upper-90s fastball and six-pitch repertoire. How are you supposed to hit him? Well, batters really didn't hit him all that much. Among pitchers with at least 100 innings, he had the fourth-lowest OPS allowed, behind only Jacob deGrom, Chris Sale and Blake Snell. The Dodgers re-signed Clayton Kershaw, but if Buehler can remain healthy, he's the new staff ace.

Walker Buehler finishes third in NL Rookie of the Year voting - True Blue LA
The Dodgers bid to have three straight National League Rookie of the Year award winners fell short Monday, as it was announced Walker Buehler finished third in the vote. The award, voted on by the Baseball Writers Association of America, went to Braves’ outfielder Ronald Acuña.
Buehler received one first-place vote, one second and 20 third to finish behind Acuña and Nationals’ outfielder Juan Soto. 27 of the 30 votes for first place went to Acuña, while Soto received 26 of the 30 for second.
In 23 starts for the Dodgers this year, Buehler was 8-4 with a 2.31 ERA. The right-hander struck out 151 in 137 1⁄3 innings and had the second lowest WHIP (0.961) ever by a rookie starter, behind Dick Hughes (0.954) in 1967.

'A horror story': history of Chernobyl nuclear disaster wins Baillie Gifford prize | Books | The Guardian
Ukrainian author Serhii Plokhy, who grew up downstream from the damaged reactor, wins £30,000 prize for Chernobyl: History of a Tragedy
A Harvard history professor’s “haunting” account of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster, which delves into the “heartbreaking stories of heroism” from the people who helped to prevent the whole of Europe from becoming uninhabitable, has won the £30,000 Baillie Gifford prize for non-fiction.
Serhii Plokhy’s Chernobyl: History of a Tragedy opens as a radiation alarm goes off in a power plant in Sweden, and as staff begin to suspect a Soviet accident. It goes on to lay out what led to the worst nuclear disaster in history, telling the stories of the firefighters, scientists, soldiers, engineers and policemen who worked to extinguish the nuclear inferno in Chernobyl on 26 April 1986. One of more than 200 books submitted for the Baillie Gifford prize, it beat a shortlist that also featured Carl Zimmer’s look at the science of inheritance, She Has Her Mother’s Laugh; Stephen R Platt’s history of the first opium war, Imperial Twilight; and Hannah Fry’s exploration of what it means to be human in the age of the machine, Hello World.

Rams’ Wade Phillips: Aaron Donald is the ‘best player in the league’
In Sean McVay’s first season with the Los Angeles Rams, he and his players swept just about every major award. He won Coach of the Year, Aaron Donald won Defensive Player of the Year and Todd Gurley settled for Offensive Player of the Year after barely missing out on NFL MVP.
It’s not often a team has the best coach, offensive and defensive players in the league, but that’s exactly what the Rams had last season. And even though none won MVP, they might have the best overall player in football.

Defensive Player of the Year: Aaron Donald, DI, Los Angeles Rams
While it’s easy to argue for the presence of other names in most of these categories, is there really any other name but Donald’s for the Defensive Player of the Year award? Donald has been a transformative player throughout his NFL career since the Rams selected him with the 13th overall pick in the 2014 draft, but he’s taken his game to the proverbial next level in 2018. Donald had never had more than 11 sacks in a season through his first four seasons—this season, he already has 10. Last season, he led all defensive linemen and linebackers with 91 total pressures, per Pro Football Focus’ metrics—this season, he already has 51 total pressures, again leading the league.

Offensive Player of the Year: Todd Gurley, RB, Los Angeles Rams
The Rams have a very good quarterback in Jared Goff, an outstanding offensive line, and a good receiver corps. But there’s one guy who defines the offense of the league’s only remaining undefeated team, and that’s Gurley. After leading the NFL in yards and touchdowns from scrimmage with 2,093 and 19 in 2017, he’s on pace to smash both of those numbers in 2018—through the first half of the season, Gurley amassed 1,151 yards from scrimmage and 15 total touchdowns. He also leads the NFL with 169 carries, 800 rushing yards, and 11 rushing touchdowns.

Todd Gurley, Aaron Donald win Offensive, Defensive Players of the Month - Turf Show Times
JTG and AD have brought in some silverware for October.
Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley and DL Aaron Donald have been named the NFC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Month, respectively.
It’s a fine representation of just how good the Rams have been this year en route to an 8-0 record.
Gurley was a beast on the ground in October with 462 rushing yards and seven (!) rushing touchdowns in four games punctuated by a 208-yard day in Denver in Week 6. He currently leads the NFL in rushing yards and rushing yards per game.
Donald meanwhile was perhaps even more impressive. His October included eight sacks, four of which came in Week 7 against the San Francisco 49ers alone. And his consistent harassment of Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers was a central reason the Rams defense was able to stymie the Packers’ offense for most of the day.
Gurley and Donald follow Rams QB Jared Goff who was named NFC Offensive Player of the Month for September.
So congrats to JTG and AD for rackin’ up the awards!

Numbers say: Put Rams QB Jared Goff in the MVP race - Los Angeles Rams Blog- ESPN
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- When asked if he'd given much thought to this season's MVP race, Jared Goff chuckled.
"No," said the low-key quarterback who has led the Los Angeles Rams to a 7-0 start. "I haven't."
So, as Goff prepares to face two-time MVP Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers (3-2) on Sunday at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum, we thought about it for him.
After all, the Rams are the only remaining undefeated team in the NFL, and Goff, in his third season, is leading the league's top-ranked offense and has ascended the quarterback rankings.
