BuzzFeed News is recruiting teenagers to make election-themed TikTok and Instagram videos » Nieman Journalism Lab
Sara Yasin, BuzzFeed News’ director of news curation, said three teen ambassadors — aged 16 to 19 — will be chosen to make weekly videos for TikTok or Instagram stories based on their passion for political issues and creative storytelling abilities. (No YouTube: Yasin said making a quality YouTube video would be overly time-consuming for the teenagers, who’ll likely be enrolled in high school or their freshman year of college.)

We Saw Nuns Kill Children: The Ghosts of St. Joseph’s Catholic Orphanage
Survivors of St. Joseph’s Orphanage in Burlington, Vermont, claimed to have been subjected to every imaginable abuse: dangled upside down over wells; forced to eat their own vomit; locked in cabinets or attics, sometimes for days; shoved out of windows. The abuse was so dehumanizing and so relentless, they said, that it came to seem almost ordinary, the only logic to which these children were exposed.

Kenneally set out — on what was initially a year-long contract — to find out what really happened behind St. Joseph’s high stone walls.

How The 2010s Killed The Celebrity Gossip Machine
But the celebrities didn’t vanquish the paparazzi so much as figure out how to undercut them — and the publications they fueled. In the end, the solution was so straightforward. Celebrities simply became their own paparazzi, posting all manner of details and footage of their daily lives on social media, and effectively put real paparazzi out of business.

The 2010s Broke Our Sense Of Time
This is why algorithmic time is so disorienting and why it bends your mind. Everything good, bad, and complicated flows through our phones, and for those not living some hippie Walden trip, we operate inside a technological experience that moves forward and back, and pulls you with it. Using a phone is tied up with the relentless, perpendicular feeling of living through the Trump presidency: the algorithms that are never quite with you in the moment, the imperishable supply of new Instagram stories, the scrolling through what you said six hours ago, the four new texts, the absence of texts, that text from three days ago that has warmed up your entire life, the four versions of the same news alert. You can find yourself wondering why you’re seeing this now — or knowing too well why it is so. You can feel amazing and awful — exult in and be repelled by life — in the space of seconds. The thing you must say, the thing you’ve been waiting for — it’s always there, pulling you back under again and again and again. Who can remember anything anymore?

Inside Documents Show How Amazon Chose Speed Over Safety in Building Its Delivery Network
“Time after time, internal documents and interviews with company insiders show, Amazon officials have ignored or overlooked signs that the company was overloading its fast-growing delivery network while eschewing the expansive sort of training and oversight provided by a legacy carrier like UPS.

“One such incident hit particularly close to home. Just as the company began to build its delivery network six years ago, a delivery van carrying Amazon packages struck a cyclist in a San Francisco suburb. The cyclist was Joy Covey, Amazon’s first chief financial officer. She was killed, leaving behind a young son.”
