Under Fire, Starbucks to Shut Down All U.S. Stores on May 29 - QSR magazine
It’s difficult to calculate exactly how much money Starbucks makes every day, but that figure extrapolates to about $40 million daily. Sixty percent of that figure accounts for about $24 million. Again, it’s hard to guess down to the drip how much money Starbucks will forfeit, but it will be a costly afternoon.

But it’s a bill Starbucks felt had to be paid. CEO Kevin Johnson said he wants Starbucks to be part of the solution to solving racial discrimination and bias in the U.S., not part of the problem.

“While this is not limited to Starbucks, we’re committed to being a part of the solution,” Johnson said in the statement. “Closing our stores for racial bias training is just one step in a journey that requires dedication from every level of our company and partnerships in our local communities.”

The statement from Starbucks follows Johnson’s conversations with the men arrested about their experience “as well as what is happening in communities across the country,” according to a second statement, published earlier today.

In the statement, Starbucks said Johnson apologized on behalf of the company and continued the conversation, directing it toward “how this painful incident can become a vehicle for positive social change.”

Habits and Generational Media Use: Journalism Studies: Vol 19, No 7
This article analyses how different generations’ everyday media habits—focusing on news media and social media—interrelate with media use during societal crises. It acknowledges that increasing digitalization and mobility are closely linked to fragmentation of media and individualization of media use, involving pronounced differences in generational media use. Ultimately, the future of journalism and media accessing carry much significance for the future of crisis communication. Different generations have formed distinct media habits, and their uses vary in different situations. Research has shown that in the specific event of a societal crisis, generations will turn to the media for information in different ways. This article builds on empirical analysis, focusing on how generations envision themselves turning to news media and social media during societal crises, depending on their everyday media habits. Theoretically it builds on the GC/MC model, a 2 × 2 matrix encompassing generation-centric (GC) and medium-centric (MC) approaches. This article gives special emphasis to habits and situational conditions. It presents a statistical analysis of nationally representative Swedish survey data from 2012. The findings show that habitual media use in everyday life strongly affects envisioned media use in crisis situations, more so than the distinct capabilities of the media and personal background characteristics.

Meanwhile a second research paper has spotted a flaw in the government’s “responsibility deal” with drinks makers. The industry agreed on reductions in alcohol levels by 2015, but while more low-alcohol products are on offer, things aren’t panning out as expected. Cambridge University researchers have scrutinised how low-alcohol drinks are being promoted by Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons and found that consumers are being prompted to buy these beverages in situations where they wouldn’t ordinarily hit the bottle. The drinks are presented as a perfect lunchtime treat, and as healthy options next to pictures of fruit. “Lower-strength wines and beers appear to be marketed not as substitutes for higher-strength products, but as ones that can be consumed on additional occasions with an added implication of healthiness,” wrote the researchers. Make that an “irresponsibility deal” then.

'Wake-up call' over liver disease risks due to weight - BBC News
Scans of nearly 3,000 individuals from the UK Biobank research project showed that 12% had inflamed, fatty livers.

The British Liver Trust said the "very alarming" findings were a 'wake-up call' because the condition can lead to cirrhosis, liver failure and death.

Hepatologists said there was a silent epidemic of fatty liver disease.
