Tyler Higbee was PFF’s top graded Rams player on offense in 2019
The Los Angeles Rams have Todd Gurley, Jared Goff, Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods on offense, but Pro Football Focus didn’t grade a single one of those players higher than Tyler Higbee in 2019.
Incredibly, with all the big names Los Angeles has on its offense, it was Higbee – who had 26 catches for 212 yards and one touchdown in the first 10 games of the season – with the highest grade PFF grade on the Rams offense this season.
He finished the year with an overall grade of 85.9, which was the third-highest by a Rams offensive player in the last three years. It was all thanks to his last five games of the season, which all came in December.
In those games, he caught 43 passes for 522 yards and two touchdowns. Thanks to that finish, Higbee not only ended the year with the highest grade on offense by a Rams player, but he posted the best season by a tight end in franchise history. His 69 catches and 734 yards are the most ever by a Rams tight end.

Rams hold highest single-season grades in PFF history at two positions
Aaron Donald will one day go down as arguably the greatest defensive tackle in NFL history. After a remarkable, record-setting 2018 season, he’s moved one step closer to punching his ticket to Canton when it’s all said and done.
With 20.5 sacks (a defensive tackle record) and an NFL-high 25 tackles for loss, it was truly one of the best seasons ever by a defensive lineman. He isn’t the only Rams defender to put together an all-time great campaign, though.
Robert Quinn had one of his own in 2013 when he was named the PFWA Defensive Player of the Year. In Pro Football Focus’ eyes, that was the best season by an edge defender in the site’s history.
Donald’s overall grade of 95.0 was tied for the highest ever at any position and the best ever by an interior defender. Quinn’s grade of 93.6 is the best in PFF history by an edge defender, too.

PFF names Aaron Donald Defensive Player of the Year - Cardiac Hill
The Pitt great led all interior linemen with 80 total pressures in 2019
Los Angeles Rams defensive lineman and Pitt great Aaron Donald was named the 2019 Defensive Player of the Year by Pro Football Focus on Monday. The analytics website pointed to his 80 total pressures and improved run defense among other factors in its decision to honor Donald.
”Aaron Donald was once again the best defender in football this season, even if we can acknowledge that the gap between him and the field was closer this year than in seasons past,” wrote Sam Monson of PFF. “Donald led all interior defenders in total pressures this season, with 80, which was 18 more than any other interior player. That’s phenomenal, but coming from a season in which he led all defenders by around the same margin, it looks somehow underwhelming.”
”A season ago, Donald was chasing the single-season sack record all year long, but we shouldn’t make the mistake of setting that as his baseline for expectations,” Monson continued. “For an interior pass-rusher to be anywhere near the single-season sack record is the outlier of all outliers. Donald’s season a year ago wasn’t just a Defensive Player of the Year kind of season; it was one of the greatest single seasons the league has seen from any player at any position.”

LA Rams links, 1/22: Aaron Donald named Defensive Player of the Year by PFF - Turf Show Times
It’s funny to think that Donald’s 12.5 sacks in 2019 seems like a slight departure from his greatness even though it’s the second-most he’s ever recorded and seventh-most overall. It was also the most by a defensive tackle and three more than second-place Jordan Phillips. Donald also led the league in tackles for a loss (20) for the second straight season. His 55 pressures was second-most behind T.J. Watt. His 32 hurries ranked first.
12.5 sacks would also be tied for the most in any season by Geno Atkins, a future Hall of Fame defensive tackle. Same for John Randle and Randy White, two current Hall of Famers.
This is a much longer intro to a links post than you’ve likely ever seen, but now you know that I think Donald is the best defensive player in the NFL and quite possibly the best overall since Taylor.

Aaron Donald named PFF Defensive Player of the Year for 3rd time
Aaron Donald was immediately one of the best players in football when he first stepped foot on an NFL field, winning Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2014. He’s only gotten better with time, too, winning the last two Defensive Rookie of the Year awards.
He has a chance to win it again this season, but Stephon Gilmore might beat him out and prevent the three-peat. What Gilmore couldn’t do was prevent Donald from winning Pro Football Focus’ Defensive Player of the Year honor for the fourth time.
PFF announced that Donald has been named the best defensive player in the NFL for 2019, the second straight season he’s won the award. He also won it in 2015 and 2016, but he was edged by Harrison Smith in 2017.
Donald led all interior defenders with 80 pressures this past season, a number that was down from his otherworldly 106 pressures in 2018 and 91 the year before. His overall grade of 93.7 was well above every other interior defender, and significantly better than Gilmore’s 82.8 overall grade. T.J. Watt’s 91.3 did come close to Donald’s grade, though.

Rams 2019 report card: Grading every position from this season
Quarterback: Jared Goff would tell you himself that his 2019 season was a disappointing one. Although he finished third in yards (4,638), he was also 16th in TD passes, 22nd in passer rating and had the 4th-most INTs. All while throwing the most passes of any quarterback. His struggles this year were a major factor in the Rams missing the playoffs.

Grades vs. SAT scores: Which is a better predictor of college success? - Los Angeles Times
As a student at Kaiser High School in Fontana two years ago, Melissa Morfin-Acevedo bombed her SAT test, scoring in the bottom third percentile nationally.
The daughter of an immigrant single mother with a fifth-grade education, Morfin-Acevedo lived below the poverty line and couldn’t afford test prep tutors. She took the 8 a.m. test exhausted, having returned home from her theater job past midnight that day.
But her 4.1 GPA helped her win admission to UC Riverside — and today the second-year student in political science is thriving in the honors program, earning mostly A’s, and preparing for a career in law or public service.
“The SAT score does not reflect your future possible success in college,” she said. “If you want it, you can do it.”
