Confirmed: Hailo sells 60% of company to Daimler as it merges with MyTaxi | TechCrunch
Some more movement and consolidation is afoot in the on-demand transportation industry, specifically in Europe. Today, Hailo is announcing that it has sold 60% of its company to Mercedes-Benz owner Daimler, and Hailo will merge its and rebrand its operations under MyTaxi, another on-demand ride-sharing company that was acquired by Daimler subsidiary Moovel in 2014.

The merged company will become one of the biggest car-hailing companies in Europe, scale that could help it compete against players like Uber, which has been aggressive in its European expansion.

Cabbies in Mexico City and London protest competition from Uber | PandoDaily
Protestors have said that drivers for these services aren’t subject to the same regulations, licensing fees, or fare minimums as the city’s official taxi drivers. This makes it harder for licensed cabs to compete with on-demand services.

I was an undercover Uber driver :: Cover :: Philadelphia City Paper
I talked to maybe 20 randomly hailed UberX and Lyft drivers between November and March. All but one were male immigrants, primarily from Africa, South Asia and the Middle East, and most spoke heavily accented English. It's a completely different group from the drivers I'm able to get in touch with through, the demographics of which I'd call "Reddit-ish." All the immigrant drivers who spoke to me took a lot of pride in providing excellent service. Few had been Uber drivers for more than a month or two. Many were helping support multiple family members, most had at least one other job and all worked hours that would reduce me to a weeping wreck in a month. [// working on a marketplace platform does not allow you to differentiate yourself // Seth Godin - being remarkable, the purple cow] [Uber also in transparent about cost structure for drivers and their own mini business] [Uber&Co, bc of marketplace, is resistant 2 workers protests] [there is also no minimum wage]

Microservices and elastic resource pools with Amazon EC2 Container Service
interesting approach to working around ECS' shortcomings -- bit specific to Hailo's microservices arch and IPC mechanism though.

aside: I like their version numbering scheme: ISO-8601, YYYYMMDDHHMMSS. keep it simple!

BBC News - Hailo says Uber blocked potential investors
"In raising that massive [funding] round, any investor who wanted to even look at Uber's books to decide whether they wanted to make an investment had to sign an agreement which specifically named us, as well as Lyft, and restricting them from having any ability to even talk to us for at least a year. "It wasn't just good enough for them to raise enough money for their business - they needed to restrict the market to Hailo and its competitors to have access to capital. "That's what we're up against."
