Fantasy Maps Don’t Belong in the Hands of Fantasy Characters | Tor.com
Here’s the thing: I don’t think fantasy maps should turn up inside their own stories. For reasons I will set out in this essay, fantasy maps don’t belong in the hands of fantasy characters. And if you’re building a fantasy world that has maps in it, there are several things you need to take into consideration.

Collections: The Siege of Gondor, Part I: Professionals Talk Logistics – A Collection of Unmitigated Pedantry
This is the first part of a six-part (II, III, IV, V, VI) series I expect to roll out taking a historian’s look at the Siege of Gondor in Peter Jackson’s Return of the King. We’re going to discuss how historically plausible the sequence of events is and, in the process, talk a fair bit about how pre-gunpowder siege warfare works. As with other Collections posts, this series will come out one-per-week, on Friday, until it’s done. This is, after all, a very long and involved sequence and there is a lot of context to work in.

We Need a Wizard Who Can Appeal to the Moderate Orc Voter

Besides, Gandalf’s plan for dealing with the Ring just won’t work. It’s too far to the left to gain support from mainstream dwarves, and would vastly increase Hobbit immigration. If the Ring has to be dropped into Mount Doom, why can’t we have our own, native-born Great Eagles do the job?

Clarity of Vision - Mithen - The Hobbit (2012), The Hobbit (Jackson Movies), The Hobbit - All Media Types, The Lord of the Rings (Movies), The Lord of the Rings - All Media Types [Archive of Our Own]
Clarity of Vision:
In a Middle-Earth where Erebor never fell, a shadow remains in the heart of the Lonely Mountain. Bilbo Baggins finds himself drawn reluctantly into a quest that will lead him across the continent--from Bree to Lake Evendim to the icy North and beyond--with a party of five dwarves searching for an artifact that will cure the ailing King Thrór.

Letters from Erebor:
Selected and edited by Mr. Frodo Baggins from a trunk full of letters and documents bequeathed to him along with Bag End. There are many more letters, particularly from the King of Erebor, Thorin Oakenshield, which are not included. The letters of Bilbo Baggins over this time, while many and varied, are preserved in the archives of Erebor and are not replicated here. The letters excerpted below cover a span of twenty-six years: from Third Age 2942, when Bilbo returned to the Shire from the Lonely Mountain for the first time, to T.A. 2968.

Clarity of Purpose:
Thorin Oakenshield and Bilbo Baggins have been parted for many years now, despite the love they bear each other. Now Thorin's research has uncovered a dire threat to Middle Earth--the Ring he carried a little while and then gave to Bilbo. Together with a group of companions composed of the different Free Peoples of Middle Earth, they must attempt to destroy the artifact before its Dark Lord can re-capture it.

Begins in 2968, twenty-six years after the events of "Clarity of Vision" and fifty years before the canonical events of "Lord of the Rings." Thus, characters' ages and the geopolitical situation will be different than LoTR canon!

Clarity of Purpose: Appendixes:
Excerpts from the Red Book of Westmarch, in which can be found the tales of various characters from Clarity of Purpose: their histories, their lives, and their passing. (unread)

New Friends:
On one of his annual trips north to Annuminas with Bilbo and Thorin, Frodo encounters a couple of boys in some peril and helps out. (unread)
