The company behind Maker Faire and Make magazine has abruptly shut down - The Verge
"Maker Media, the company that publishes Make Magazine and Maker Faire is laying off its staff and halting its operations amidst financial troubles, according to TechCrunch.

Maker Media CEO and founder Dale Dougherty confirmed to TechCrunch that the company was ceasing operations and that it had laid off 22 employees, citing financial difficulties with publishing a magazine and the lack of corporate sponsorship."

Nintendo announces Labo: A Cardboard Creator Kit for Kids
Nintendo just announced Labo: a cardboard kit for makers that works with the Switch, to empower users to create interactive hardware and games.

From the trailer; it seems like much of what you’ll be building with Labo is made of punch-out, fold-together cardboard toys, similar to Pinbox 3000 or Kitrex. But where Labo makes a pretty hard split from the rest of the bunch is the ways that it interacts with Nintendo’s existing hardware. The Switch is essentially a gaming tablet with a touch screen and two detachable controllers on either side. Those controllers, called Joy-Cons, are packed with tons of interesting hardware: Each one packs a number of buttons, an analog joystick, plus a gyroscope, an accelerometer, an NFC reader and an infrared depth camera.

Raspberry Pi GPIO Pins and Python | Make:
The GPIO pins on a Raspberry Pi are a great way to interface physical devices like buttons and LEDs with the little Linux processor. If you’re a Python developer, there’s a sweet library called RPi.GPIO that handles interfacing with the pins. The main difference between these modes is that the BOARD option uses the pins exactly as they are laid out on the Pi. No matter what revision you’re using, these will always be the same. The BCM option uses the Broadcom SoC numbering, which differs between version 1 and version 2 of the Pi.

Keep Your Cabinets Secure with a Touch-Sensitive Lock | Make:
We wanted to lock up the cabinet where we store medications and other things we keep away from the kids. But adding any type of standard lock would ruin the look of the cabinet. We didn’t want to see any visible sign of the locking mechanism.

We decided to use an electric solenoid type of lock that would be triggered by a hidden capacitive touch switch. A piece of conductive copper tape stuck on the inside of the cabinet is monitored by a capacitive touch switch module. Whenever you touch that spot on the outside of the cabinet, the touch switch module detects the touch and energizes the solenoid lock, which releases the door to open.

So now, we have a totally hidden lock on our medicine cabinet that only we adults know how to open (as long as we don’t let the kids see how it works)!

Workshop Wednesday: How To Heat-Bend Acrylic Enclosures
Acrylic has great potential as a building material for would-be makers. It has a very clean look, is easily cut (dremel, table saw, scroll saw, band saw, to name a few), and is durable.

When building your own creations, it’s sometimes necessary to bend the acrylic sheets themselves in order to serve your vision. This can be easily done using little more than scrap wood, a Dremel, circular saw, heat gun, and a vise.

CircuitPython Snakes its Way onto Adafruit Hardware
CircuitPython is a microcontroller firmware based on MicroPython that makes it easier than ever to program hardware. Unlike Arduino, a user’s code is not stored in the firmware itself, but rather on a tiny filesystem in the chip or on the board. As a result, programming with CircuitPython is as simple as plugging the board into a computer and editing a file on the drive that appears. No additional software is needed to get started.
