The Ethiopian marathoner who protested for change at the Rio Olympics is back home October 22, 2018 at 09:34AM https://ift.tt/2AmOEQ3

Exiled Ethiopian marathoner Feyisa Lilesa has returned home.

Lilesa landed in the capital Addis Ababa on Sunday (Oct. 22) after more than two years in exile. The 28-year-old came into the limelight in 2016 after he crossed the Olympic marathon finish line in Rio by holding his crossed wrists over his head—a gesture of solidarity with the anti-government protests that had been taking place in the Horn of Africa nation. The Oromo, Ethiopia’s largest ethnic group, along with the Amharas, were demonstrating to demand equal economic opportunities, political reform, and an end to the police crackdown.

“My legs were running but my mind was preoccupied by all the suffering that was going on around me,” Lilesa had said about why he decided to protest as he won a silver medal.

Fearing he’d be killed if he went back, Lilesa sought asylum in the United States, where his family joined him several months later. As violence mounted in Ethiopia and the prospects for change dimmed, the marathoner told Quartz he had no plans of ever returning to his home nation until there were a regime change and a “visionary leadership that can garner and develop the resources for the benefit of all, not just a limited few elites who take all for themselves.”

Feyisa Lilesa’s family joined him in exile in Feb. 2017.

That change of guard has now come in the form of a 42-year-old prime minister, Abiy Ahmed. Since coming to power in April, Abiy has introduced radical reforms aimed at dismantling the country’s troubled past and paving the way for a new future. In April, Lilesa told Quartz from his new home in Flagstaff, Arizona that he was emboldened by Abiy’s rhetoric and actions and that he was thinking of returning home. While living abroad, he kept training, participating, and running marathons including in London, Bogota, and Tokyo.

Lilesa, however, isn’t the only Ethiopian returning home these days: exiled opposition groups, journalists, and academics are all going back as the country turns a new page. On Sunday, he was received at Addis Ababa’s Bole airport by foreign minister Workneh Gebeyehu along with family and fans. “I knew the dictatorship would eventually fall down,” he said.

The most productive meetings don’t have slide decks October 22, 2018 at 07:05AM https://ift.tt/2R8mbTK

Most meetings are not conversations. They are a series of lectures.

Jim from accounting gets up in front of a seated room. He shuffles through a series of slides, reiterating the words on the screen. Jenny, an assertive, quick thinker from sales, offers the lion’s share of feedback. Jim uploads the slides to a shared folder, and they are never spoken of again.

Clark Valberg, the CEO of the software company InVision, thinks there has to be a better way. Meetings with presentations “are biased toward fast thinkers and bold communicators,” says Valberg. “Instead of presenters always holding the ball in their hand, we want them to throw the ball into the audience and create more of a game.”

InVision, which makes software for designers, might seem like a strange company to try to redefine the office meeting. Its entire 750-person team works remotely, in 20-plus countries. You would think a distributed team would have to rely more on presentations and summaries of real-time conversations. However, Valberg has decided to ban slide decks from InVision’s meetings. Instead, he encourages his employs to draw.

Valberg believes that asking employs to sketch out their ideas not only helps them crystallize their own thinking, but also makes it easier for others to understand their thought process. “Sketches are, by definition, low-fidelity,” he says. “Therefore, they keep presenters from getting attached to their ideas and invite their coworkers in to participate.”

But the best part of switching from a culture of presentations to a culture of doodling happens after the meeting is done. Because InVision is entirely remote, all meeting doodles take place on a digital whiteboard tool called Freehand. Instead of meeting notes or slide decks that feel like artifacts laid in stone, the meeting’s doodle becomes an evolving document, which colleagues can return to and improve asynchronously.

Without slides, the gathering feels less like a lecture and more like a group conversation. And rather than being a place to share work that’s already complete, meetings become a place to get work done—together.

What visa woes? Indians are still hogging most H-1Bs October 22, 2018 at 05:33AM https://ift.tt/2Cxwcpp

The Donald Trump administration may be going tough on H-1B visa allocation. But there’s no stopping Indians from working in the US.

Of the nearly 420,000 foreign nationals working on H-1B visas as of Oct. 05, nearly three in four were from India, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) said in a recent report. The data includes the figures for both fresh and continuing employment.

China is a distant second with under 50,000.

For many years, Indian IT outsourcing firms like Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services have been heavily reliant on bringing talent from India to the US. And though they are trying to beef up local hiring amid rising hostility towards immigrant workers, Silicon Valley giants like Amazon still continue to hire scores of Indian techies since their demand for talent far outstrips the available supply domestically.

However, India’s strong lead may weaken over the next few years as the Trump administration redefines what makes for a specialty occupation—a prerequisite for the H-1B. Most Indians are brought in at entry-level positions. “H-1B workers that aren’t super-specialists and unique in their skill set will likely get excluded and not be able to get H-1B visas,” said Vivek Tandon, CEO and founder of immigration firm EB5 BRICS. “This will deter more and more Indian nationals from pursuing H-1B visas.”

No country for women

USCIS data also showed a gaping gender disparity among Indians who hold the H-1B visa. Nearly 80% of the beneficiaries from the country as of earlier this month were men.

Comparatively, the rest of the top five recipient nations were more evenly split between the two genders. The Philippines, in fact, skewed more towards women.
