This speech about American history will change the way you think about identity politics — Quartz

Why is identity so frequently a cause of conflict?” Cobb asked. “The most safe answer I can give is that we have yet to triumph over the most narrow sense, the most zero-sum understanding of who we are. We have yet to permanently enshrine a concept of democracy that sees itself as enriched by the presence and success of others.”

IndieWebCamp
"What is the IndieWeb?

The IndieWeb is a people-focused alternative to the ‘corporate web’.

Your content is yours
When you post something on the web, it should belong to you, not a corporation. Too many companies have gone out of business and lost all of their users’ data. By joining the IndieWeb, your content stays yours and in your control.

You are better connected
Your articles and status messages can go to all services, not just one, allowing you to engage with everyone. Even replies and likes on other services can come back to your site so they’re all in one place.

You are in control
You can post anything you want, in any format you want, with no one monitoring you. In addition, you share simple readable links such as example.com/ideas. These links are permanent and will always work.

Beyond Blogging and Decentralization

The IndieWeb effort is different from previous efforts/communities:

• Principles over project-centrism. Others assume a monoculture of one project for all. We are developing a plurality of projects.

• Selfdogfood instead of email. Show before tell. Prioritize by scratching your own itches, creating, iterating on your own site.

• Design first, protocols & formats second. Focus on good UX & selfdogfood prototypes to create minimum necessary formats & protocols."

We should do God, says report into religion in public life - BBC News
"We don't do God," as Tony Blair's spin doctor Alastair Campbell famously told an interviewer wishing to inquire further about the then prime minister's Christian faith. But according to a report published today, we urgently need to do God - or rather, as a nation, we need to understand religion and belief much better as a driving force within societies across the world, in order to deal with its impact at home. Here, the decrease in mainstream Christianity and the growth of minority religions are raising questions about national identity (what does it mean to be British today?) and how we can live together and accommodate difference peacefully and cohesively, balancing each other's freedoms and rights. [...] Identity anxiety [ << symptom of crony capitalism and inequality and unrechtsstaat ]

Ex-SNP MSP to draw up Rise manifesto - BBC News
"The strength of Rise is the grassroots involvement in every area, and I welcome the interest that it is generating already." Rise - which stands for respect, independence, socialism and environmentalism - was born from the wider "Yes" movement in the wake of the independence referendum campaign. It includes the Scottish Socialist Party, the International Socialist Group, and other campaign groups. Ms Urquhart was one of three SNP MSPs who left the party in the wake of it voting to end its opposition to an independent Scotland joining Nato. The other two - John Wilson and John Finnie - have since joined the Scottish Greens.

Peer to Peer Market - Academic Paper.
Peer-to-peer markets such as eBay, Uber, and Airbnb allow small suppliers to compete with traditional providers of goods or services. We view the primary function of these markets as making it easy for buyers to find sellers and engage in convenient, trustworthy transactions. We discuss elements of market design that make this possible, including search and matching algorithms, pricing, and reputation systems. We then develop a simple model of how these markets enable entry by small or flexible suppliers, and the resulting impact on existing firms. Finally, we consider the regulation of peer-to-peer markets, and the economic arguments for different approaches to licensing and certification, data, and employment regulation.

Networks and the Nature of the Firm — The WTF Economy — Medium
“publish, then filter” - Clay Shirky. >> It is fundamentally an open-ended network in which filtering and curation (otherwise known as “management”) happens largely after the fact. [ Twitter lacks a management/curation feature, has to overcome its once cheered differentiator of no curating nor using algorithms to make sense of the noise one subscribed to. ] [...] [ Replacing knowledgeable workers, sales person, support staff, with software. ] One way to think about the new generation of on-demand companies, such as Uber, Lyft, and Airbnb, is that they are networked platforms for physical world services, which are bringing fragmented industries into the 21st century in the same way that ecommerce has transformed retail. [...] This fragmented industry [Taxi] provides work not just for drivers but for managers, dispatchers, maintenance workers, and bookkeepers.

I was an undercover Uber driver :: Cover :: Philadelphia City Paper
I talked to maybe 20 randomly hailed UberX and Lyft drivers between November and March. All but one were male immigrants, primarily from Africa, South Asia and the Middle East, and most spoke heavily accented English. It's a completely different group from the drivers I'm able to get in touch with through Uberpeople.net, the demographics of which I'd call "Reddit-ish." All the immigrant drivers who spoke to me took a lot of pride in providing excellent service. Few had been Uber drivers for more than a month or two. Many were helping support multiple family members, most had at least one other job and all worked hours that would reduce me to a weeping wreck in a month. [// working on a marketplace platform does not allow you to differentiate yourself // Seth Godin - being remarkable, the purple cow] [Uber also in transparent about cost structure for drivers and their own mini business] [Uber&Co, bc of marketplace, is resistant 2 workers protests] [there is also no minimum wage]

NASA: We're sending humans to Mars | Hacker News
It's not a matter of public/private indeed, it's a matter of size. The bigger an organization, the more dis-aligned individual and collective incentives become. In a start-up you can't afford to harm the enterprise in order to further your own interest: if you act parasitically you'll kill your host almost immediately. In a big company, you won't make a meaningful difference, neither positively nor negatively, so you may as well serve your own interests, irrespective of their effect on the whole company. Corollary: people who want to play corporate politics concentrate in big companies, because that's where you can do it with relative impunity. Big private companies offset this competitive disadvantage through economy of scales and/or lobbying; public services do it through taxes and monopolies. NASA isn't inefficient because it's public, but because it's huge. // &! on a different note. improving NHS by managed market approach!? offering choice = competition, w care&quality standards.

This Labor Day, Reflect On Diversity And The Future | TechCrunch
Our increased awareness has meant that more and more news stories have come out about the bad behavior of members of our community. The list is long, from startup CEOs and their fraternity-era emails, to venture capitalists who attempt to turn pitch sessions into romantic evenings. Yet despite such discussions, there remains a virulent group opposed to efforts to make our culture more inclusive, opposition that I honestly have never quite understood. Thankfully, women are starting to get the infrastructure to support their technology careers that they should have had years ago. While shaming is a useful and important tactic, ultimately it is our ability to foster the next generation of female engineers and entrepreneurs that will change our culture for the better.
