What You Should Know About the Equifax Data Breach Settlement — Krebs on Security
Big-three credit bureau Equifax has reportedly agreed to pay at least $650 million to settle lawsuits stemming from a 2017 breach that let intruders steal personal and financial data on roughly 148 million Americans. Here’s a brief primer that attempts to break down what this settlement means for you, and what it says about the value of your identity.
Q: What happened?
A: If the terms of the settlement are approved by a court, the Federal Trade Commission says Equifax will be required to spend up to $425 million helping consumers who can demonstrate they were financially harmed by the breach. The company also will provide up to 10 years of free credit monitoring to those who had their data exposed.

Equifax breach: Your settlement questions, answered - CNN
(CNN Business)On Monday, Equifax settled with the US Federal Trade Commission over its 2017 data breach, which affected 147 million Americans.
The settlement of up to $700 million includes as much as $425 million for individual compensation. With so many Americans affected, it's very likely you could qualify for some form of compensation as a result of the settlement.

INCLUSION & RESPECT

SUBMITTING WORK VIA GOOGLE DRIVE

You’ll occasionally be asked to submit your work via Google Drive. Because I prefer to insert margin comments and propose revisions directly in/on your text, I need to work with an editable document (e.g., not a pdf). For this reason, I ask that you please either (1) create your documents in Google Drive; or (2) upload documents in .doc format, which I can then download and annotate using “track changes,” and return to you via email. You can share your material with me by clicking on the “Share” button in the upper-right corner of Google Drive/Docs, inserting my email address, then clicking on the little pencil icon and choosing “can edit.”

I’ll probably propose some line edits and add some margin comments to your Doc. I don’t expect you to respond to my recommendations and queries, but I do hope you’ll at least consider them! If, however, you would like to continue the dialogue in the comments section by responding and requesting additional feedback from me, you’ll need to alert me via email because I can’t continually monitor for new activity across all students’ documents.

POSTING WORK ONLINE

We’ll all create accounts for our class’s blog, and we’ll briefly review how to post. You’re invited to post any class-related material – events, exhibitions, news, etc. – at any time, and you’ll occasionally be asked to share your work online. If you’re not comfortable posting your work, please don’t hesitate to talk to me.

DEADLINES

I was just asked by a colleague how I facilitate Q & A sessions—I guess the word is out that I am very deliberate about how an academic Q & A should go after a talk or panel. I think of this as an Indigenous feminist approach to facilitating academic Q & A. 1/

I take your work seriously, I read it closely, and I’m known for providing substantial, thorough, constructive feedback. I set aside big blocks of time for assignment review immediately after each deadline. Missing deadlines means you miss your “window of opportunity” for review, which is an essential part of your learning in this course (and any course, for that matter). Late work = no comments.

A student who has not submitted all assigned work by the end of the semester does not receive an “Incomplete” by default. “Incompletes” are assigned only in extreme circumstances, and require that the student consult with me well before the end of the semester and sign a contract obligating him or her to complete all outstanding work by a date that we agree upon. Again, late work will not receive feedback.

CHANGES TO THE SYLLABUS

I make every effort to map out the entire semester before the semester begins, so we both know what we’re in for. Yet we may need to make a few small alterations to our schedule: we might host a guest who’s passing through town, I might decide to cut a couple of our readings or substitute new material that’s published over the course of the semester, etc. Any changes will be noted, with plenty of advance notice, on our class website, which will always be the most the most accurate, up-to-date “control center” for our class; this printed syllabus is really just an administrative document. And any revisions will only maintain or decrease, never increase, your workload.

ACADEMIC HONESTY

All students are expected to familiarize themselves with the University’s academic honesty policy. Plagiarism or cheating of any form will result in failure of the assignment or course. If you have any questions regarding proper citation of sources or other academic integrity matters, please ask me or consult the University Learning Center.

Improving Q&As with peer-review / Boing Boing
At the start of the Q&A, Tuck "[makes] it clear that it is the audience’s responsibility to help craft a positive public speaking experience for graduate students and early career scholars," then she declares a 5-10 minute break for the audience to talk with one another, suggesting that they "use the time to peer review their questions" and to

* "make sure it is really a question"

* "make sure they aren’t actually trying to say that THEY should have given the paper"

* "figure out if the question needs to be posed and answered in front of everyone"

Then she asks that "the first question come from particular people in the room— Indigenous graduate students, etc" and then asks each questioner whether they peer-reviewed their questions.

Ever since I was in graduate school, I thought I hated giving public talks. But I soon realized it’s not the presentation, but the Q & A that can feel so awful. Academic audiences can be arrogant, hostile, and self-absorbed. 2/

People don’t always bring their best selves to the Q & A—people can act out their own discomfort about the approach or the topic of the talk. We need to do better. I believe in heavily mediated Q & A sessions. 3/

Before I give a talk, I ask my host to please find someone to facilitate the Q & A. It is better for someone who knows the people in the audience to choose who gets to ask questions in public, because they know who is a bully, who to avoid, who will derail a conversation. 4/

The tips in this thread are both what I do after my own talks, and what I do when I am chairing a session. I especially do this for graduate students and early career scholars. 5/

Right after I am finished talking or all the panelists have shared their papers, I invite the audience to take 5-10 minutes to talk to each other. After 45-70 minutes of listening, people are bursting to talk, 7/

and taking the time to turn to talk to a neighbor keeps the first question from being from a person who just felt the urgency to talk. Also, I often need a breather and a moment to drink water or even step out to use the washroom. 8/

So, I give the audience 5-10 minutes to talk to a neighbor. I suggest that they use the time to peer review their questions. 9/

I say that this is a time for them to share a question they are considering posing in the q and a, and that they should

a) make sure it is really a question;

b) make sure they aren’t actually trying to say that THEY should have given the paper; 10/

c) figure out if the question needs to be posed and answered in front of everyone;

d) I remind the audience that the speaker has just done a lot of work, so they should figure out if their question is asking the speaker to do work that really the question-asker should do. 11/

Then, after 5-10 mins, I will sometimes ask for the first question to come from particular people in the room— Indigenous graduate students, etc.

Or, if opening it up for anyone to begin, I will ask, “did you peer review your question?” before the person takes the mic. 12/

People kind of laugh it off, but once they realize that I am serious--that the expectation is that they are thoughtful about the quality of their question and whether it really needs to be asked--it often helps to make the conversation much more satisfying. 13/

We often treat Q & A as something that is to be endured, and are willing to gamble on it not going well by having very passive facilitation. We can shift how we interact with one another and make it better. Thanks to Daniel Heath Justice @justicedanielh for asking about this! 14/"
