All You Happy Assholes Make Me Want To Kill Myself, Statistically Speaking | Motherboard
"More people commit suicide in locales that self-identify as “happy.” Like Utah, which is full of happy jerks being athletic and having great diets and a fulfilling spiritual life."

Young Women Demanding Justice and Dignity: By All Means Necessary
Dignity might be a universally recognized human right, but its denial is not experienced in the same way by all. Class, age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, and other stratifying categories do matter here.

The death of Mohammed Bouazzizi, Amina, and Fadoua make different statements about humiliation –read denial of human dignity. The specific cases of the two young Moroccan women tell us that dignity is claimed for different reasons even when it is gendered and embedded in the same broader patriarchal definitions of honor and shame. Dignity is gendered in the way it is inscribed in women’s bodies, sexuality, mobility, and the practices of their everyday lives.

Rachel Ehmke, 13-Year-Old Minnesota Student, Commits Suicide After Months Of Bullying
The U.S. Department of Education has identified 16 "key components" in state bullying legislation, including a statement of scope, listing of enumerated groups, process of district policy review, definitions and reporting guidelines. Minnesota ranks last in the country with its state bullying law only covering two of the 16 components, according to an Education Department analysis of state bullying laws released in December. Nebraska ranks second-to-last by covering four of the 16 components.

Statement of scope, one of the most common components of state bullying laws, establishes where legislation applies and what conditions must exist for schools to have authority over student conduct.

According to the Education Department report, Minnesota is one of just three states -- alongside Wisconsin and Arizona -- that prohibits bullying but doesn't define that behavior. The state also doesn't provide for its districts a model bullying policy, and at a mere 37 words, its anti-bullying law is the shortest one in the country:

Each school board shall adopt a written policy prohibiting intimidation and bullying of any student. The policy shall address intimidation and bullying in all forms, including, but not limited to, electronic forms and forms involving Internet use.

Facebook Launches Crisis Tools for Military Service Members
A new Facebook program provides military personnel, veterans and their families with customized resources when their content is flagged as harmful or suicidal.

It is an extension of a suicide prevention effort Facebook launched in December, which lets friends alert the social network when other users express suicidal thoughts by clicking a link next to the comment. Facebook sends an email with suicide prevention resources to the author of the comment.

“While this is helpful for a military family, there are several specific resources provided to our nation’s military that we wanted to make sure they were aware of at their time of need,” military support organization Blue Star Families, which along with the Department of Veterans Affairs partnered with Facebook for the effort, wrote in a statement.

One last thing: If I could trouble someone out there to do me a small favor, I’d like you to contact the manager of my apartment building. Or I guess you could call the Seattle PD. It doesn’t matter. I just don’t want to sit in here too long without being discovered and I’d like for my cats to be rescued.

(PDF) Shaunagh Foy, "A summary of the key points from 'Profiling Missing Persons within New South Wales'," Charles Sturt University, 2006
"[This research] examined all relevant information about missing persons who, on being located, were determined to have run away, suicided or met with foul play. The data was extracted from archived police files of solved missing persons cases and sought to determine if there exists a meaningful and unique profile of factors that allows each type of missing person to be distinguishable from other types. [...]

the findings from this study support the argument that a peer can accurately judge the likely motives or goals of the person who is missing, and in so doing accurately advise the police of the possible risks that the missing person may be exposed to."

Junior Seau dead: Will the latest football suicide finally change how we think about the NFL? - Slate Magazine
Horrible, tragic death. Interestingly eight players from the Chargers have died before the age of 45. Speculation that the gunshot wound was to the chest instead of the brain is due to the fact that he wanted his brain preserved for study.

Chemical suicide shuts down Seekonk carnival
Fire officials in Seekonk believe that a man killed himself by breathing in a mixture of hydrogen sulfide while inside a car, in a parking lot, where a carnival was scheduled to take place.

Thankfully the man did leave several notes on the car warning people to stay away.

And without those warnings, officials say that the situation could have been much worse.

The warnings were first discovered by a group of kids at around 2:30 Friday afternoon.

"It said poisonous gas, hydrogen sulfide, do not open the doors, call 9-1-1 and get the hazmat team." said 13-year old Matthew Stanley.

Harry/Louis fill warning character death & self harm Finished
Harry and Louis have been in a long term relationship. One afternoon they get in a heated argument and Louis storms off and goes for a drive to cool off. 2/3 hours after Louis left, Harry finally decides to check up on him after ignoring his calls. He sees that Louis has left him a voice mail...(Long prompt. Second person fic. Giant dose of angst.)

QUOTE: You had changed though, you weren’t the Harry Styles everybody remembered and loved, you were losing yourself, constantly locked in your room, you barely ate, barely slept, you just drank, searched youtube for videos just so you could hear his laugh again, looked at pictures of him, the message was ingrained in your mind but you never really listened to it, you were saving it.

New York Architecture Images: Bobst Library
Philip Johnson is the most overrated architect in the history of architecture and this red monstrosity of his proves it. I teach journalism at N.Y.U., so I am biting the hand that feeds me to write this. But that hand has blood on it for ever building this structure and for not having higher barriers around the balconies. N.Y.U. won’t knock it down because replacing it would cost too much and Johnson’s reputation is so sacred. In an e-mail on the suicides to the campus community sent the Monday afternoon after the second library suicide (Oct. 14, 2003), N.Y.U. President John Sexton noted that “the search for a rational cause, so instinctive in a community defined by its commitment to ideas, is a fruitless undertaking.” Later in the e-mail he defended Bobst as a “house of knowledge,” and wrote that we should not “permit our thoughts to be dominated [by the suicides] each time we enter and use the library.” What will help is if there are no more plunging bodies, something that Sexton’s “rational” pledge to install tall glass panels around the railing should ensure. But I for one will never forget those dead students, nor that a community defined by its commitment to ideas ever built a building so irrational that it would one day require glass suicide barriers.
