Samsung removes ads that trolled Apple over removing headphone jack after it does the same thing
It just started removing the headphone jack from its phone too.
What you need to know
Samsung is trying to scrub the record of its making fun of Apple for removing the headphone jack.
That's because it is now doing the same thing with its Galaxy Note 10.
However, the ad is still up on its Malaysian channel so you can still watch it and have a chuckle.
Remember when Apple first removed the headphone jack from the iPhone and Samsung couldn't help but run a national ad campaign making fun of it? Well now it has to pay the piper because it is now removing the headphone jack from its phones and quietly removing these ads. However, thanks to a bad job by Samsung, they're still around.
First spotted by Business Insider, Samsung has removed the video called "Growing Up" from its main U.S. YouTube channels:
Business Insider found that the advert has been removed from the Samsung Mobile USA page, which has nearly 1.8 million subscribers. It is also not available on the main Samsung channel, which has 3.8 million followers. You can still see the Samsung Mobile USA YouTube page that hosted the advert via internet archive Way Back Machine.
In the ad a long time iPhone user begins to grow frustrated with the iPhone's lack of waterproofing or expandable storage. It isn't until Apple removes the headphone jack that the user ditches the iPhone and gets a Samsung Galaxy.
Though Samsung is trying to scrub every record of this ad, it still hasn't quite done so. The ad is still on its Malaysian YouTube page.
Apple tends to be the subject of many competitor's negative ad campaigns. But seeing as it is also the trendsetter, most of these companies just end up following Apple's lead in a few years anyway.
Apple was the first to remove the headphone jack, and it received a healthy dose of criticism for it. Now every major smartphone marker has done so. The last holdout was Samsung. Well, this is its mea culpa moment.

Russian secret documents show plot to stoke US racial violence - Vox
It’s super messed up.
The Russians who interfered in the 2016 US presidential election are still at it — and this time, they’re trying to ignite racial violence in America and a partial collapse of the United States.
According to secret documents obtained by a Russian opposition group, hackers have discussed plans to stir up racial resentment in the United States in hopes of tearing American society apart. The operatives are apparently associates of Yevgeny Prigozhin, the man who set up a troll farm and was indicted by special counsel Robert Mueller for his role in 2016 meddling.
Those documents, shared with but not verified by NBC News on Monday night, are extremely troubling.
Prigozhin and his team of Russian trolls tried to inflame racial tensions during the 2016 cycle by operating several social media accounts that tried to discourage African Americans from voting, mainly by repeating messages of police violence and voter fraud.

U.S. cybersecurity agency uses pineapple pizza to demonstrate vulnerability to foreign influence
Within 24 hours of the first tweet, the fake war on pineapple had begun to have its intended effect.
What does pineapple pizza have to do with interference by Russia and other trolls in U.S. elections?
Everything, the head of an American cybersecurity agencies says. Because foreign governments, trying to create divisiveness, want Americans to argue and will go after low hanging fruit, like pizza toppings.
From a little-known conference put on by Fordham University and the FBI this week, DHS Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) Director Christopher Krebs tweeted his own hot take on pineapple pizza: Thumbs down.
The tweet was accompanied by a tongue-in-cheek poster describing the tactics by which foreign trolls divide voters and inject chaos into an election. Their topic wasn’t race, or politics, or any other traditionally divisive issue. It was whether tropical fruit belongs on your dinner order.
CISA breaks down the playbook of foreign influencers into five steps: targeting divisive issues (see: pineapple pizza), moving accounts into place, amplifying and distorting the conversation, making the mainstream (see: NBC News story about pineapple pizza), and taking the conversation into the real world.

Creator of fake presidential seal hails 'absolute hero' who pulled off Trump stunt | US news | The Guardian
Seal at Republican event showed Russian symbols and golf clubs
Charles Leazott created doctored image in 2016 as comic protest
The creator of a fake presidential seal doctored with symbols of Russia and golf that Donald Trump unwittingly delivered a speech in front of at a meeting of young Republicans has said he is delighted with whoever pulled off the stunt.
“I love them,” Charles Leazott, a former Republican and graphic designer, told the Washington Post on Thursday, adding that the perpetrator was “either wildly incompetent or the best troll ever. Either way, I love them.”
The seal was doctored to resemble Russia’s coat of arms, and added golf clubs and an inscription changed from E pluribus unum – “out of many, one” – to the Spanish phrase “45 es un títere”, or “45 is a puppet”, was projected behind the president while he addressed the Turning Point USA meeting.
Leazott, a 46-year-old graphic designer who voted for George W Bush twice, said he created the image in 2016 as a comic protest.
The faux seal flashed up on screen for about 80 seconds, until the projection was switched to the correct image. Initially, a spokesperson for TPUSA said they hadn’t been aware of the switch until the Washington Post called. A day later the group had identified the staffer responsible and described the mistake as “unacceptable”.
“We did let the individual go,” the spokesman told the Post. “I don’t think it was malicious intent but nevertheless …”
Leazott said he did not believe the explanation.
“You have to look for this,” Leazott told the newspaper. “There’s no way this was an accident, is all I’m saying.”

Uncovering A Culture of Fear: Trolls in America, 2017
Over the recent years, the influence of political trolls and bots have become a commonplace phenomenon in social media. Using techniques taken from online marketeers' playbooks, these well-organised groups of online operatives impersonate people they are really not in order to deliver an incendiary message, aimed at causing doubt, disbelief and anger and, eventually, destructive action based on false pretenses. Often, trolls use bots - computer programs that automatically spread the message, and sometimes create both fake users and even the messages themselves. In this way, false messages aimed at causing anger can be amplified very fast, and reach a lot of people.
The Internet Research Agency and Trolling America
One of the most famous cases of influencing political discourse was that of the Internet Research Agency based in St Petersburg. In one well documented case, they used twitter to target American audiences with more than 2 million tweets over 2016 and 2017, with the purpose of sowing discord and distrust towards not only the political establishment, but also between individual Americans. The operation, professionally managed and funded, was largely exposed by leaks and investigators. The operation still continues, but the methodology has become more refined, and harder to detect.

Trump appears in front of seal with Russian, golf imagery, TPUSA aide fired - CNNPolitics
(CNN)An audiovisual aide for conservative student group Turning Point USA was fired this week after President Donald Trump appeared on a stage in front of a parody image of the presidential seal at its Teen Student Action Summit.
As the President took the stage Tuesday morning before a sea of 1,500 teenage cell phones, a screen behind him showed a fake presidential seal featuring a two-headed eagle -- which bore similarity to the State seal of the Russian Federation -- clutching a set of golf clubs in its talons. The seal was visible for a short time behind Trump, who stood behind a podium affixed with the official (and un-doctored) presidential seal for the duration of his speech.
TPUSA apologized for the incident, telling CNN there was "zero malicious intent" behind the imagery.
"We're sorry for the mix-up and meant no disrespect to the White House or the President or the advance team," the TPUSA source said.

Trump Spoke in Front of a Fake Presidential Seal Mocking Him
When President Trump appeared before an eager crowd of young conservatives at Turning Point USA’s student summit this week, he stood proudly in front of a fake presidential seal that was altered to mock his alleged ties to Russia and his golfing habit.
The eagle on the fake seal has two heads, rather than one, a clear reference to Russia’s coat of arms, the Washington Post points out. In the real presidential seal, the eagle holds 13 arrows in its left talon, signifying the first 13 states. But in the fake one, it holds 13 golf clubs, signifying Trump’s golf obsession.
The banner above the eagle is also altered on the fake seal. Rather than “E pluribus unum,” the motto of the United states, it says “45 es un titere,” Spanish for “45 is a puppet.” Here’s a clearer image of the mocking seal.
The altered seal appears to have come from an online retailer called “OneTermDonnie,” the Post reports, but it’s not clear how it ended up behind Trump Tuesday. Neither the White House nor TPUSA knew how it got there, they told the paper.
“It was a last-minute A/V mistake — and I can’t figure out where the breakdown was — but it was a last minute throw-up, and that’s all it was,” a spokesperson for TPUSA said. “I can’t figure out who did it yet.”
Update: CNN reported Thursday afternoon that the TPUSA aide was fired for the mistake. A source within the organization told CNN that there was “zero malicious intent” and the mistake was the result of a hasty Google search.

Trump appears with altered presidential seal at Turning Point USA event
WASHINGTON – Speaking on Tuesday at a student activist conference hosted by the conservative advocacy organization Turning Point USA, President Donald Trump walked onstage in front of a presidential seal that, upon closer examination, appears to have been altered to include symbols representing Russia and golf.
The Washington Post first reported on the altered seal. As Trump walked onstage to a cheering audience, two presidential seals flashed on screen. The seal directly behind Trump was the authentic presidential seal. One of the seals, however, was not like the others.
Upon closer examination, the seal on Trump's right includes a double-headed eagle, unlike the single head of the traditional presidential seal, and seems to resemble the Russian coat of arms. The seal has a complex history, notes the Victoria and Albert Museum, but one of the more common interpretations is that the two heads represent east and west, "an allegory sometimes for unity, and sometimes for absolute monarchy." It could be a reference to Trump's sometimes-controversial relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Russian disinformation on Facebook targeted Ukraine well before the 2016 U.S. election - The Washington Post
KIEV, Ukraine — In the spring of 2015, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko was desperate for Mark Zuckerberg’s help. His government had been urging Facebook to stop the Kremlin’s spreading of misinformation on the social network to foment distrust in his new administration and to promote support of Russia’s invasion and occupation of parts of Ukraine.
To get Zuckerberg’s attention, the president posted a question for a town hall meeting at Facebook’s Silicon Valley headquarters. There, a moderator read it aloud.
“Mark, will you establish a Facebook office in Ukraine?” the moderator said, chuckling, according to a video of the assembly. The room of young employees rippled with laughter. But the government’s suggestion was serious: It believed that a Kiev office, staffed with people familiar with Ukraine’s political situation, could help solve Facebook’s high-level ignorance about Russian information warfare.
“You know, over time it’s something that we might consider,” the chief executive responded. “So thank you for — the Ukrainian president — for writing in. I don’t think we’ve gotten that one before.”
In the three years since then, officials here say the company has failed to address most of their concerns about Russian online interference that predated similar interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The tactics identified by officials, such as coordinated activity to overwhelm Facebook’s system and the use of impostor accounts, are the same as in the 2016 contest — and continue to challenge Facebook ahead of next month’s midterm elections.
“I was explicitly saying that there are troll factories, that their posts and reposts promoted posts and news that are fake,” Dmytro Shymkiv, then deputy minister of the presidential administration, said he told Facebook executives in June 2015. “They are promoted on your platform. By very often fake accounts. Have a look.”

Americans Say They Would Vote For A Woman, But … | FiveThirtyEight
A record number of women are running for president in 2020, and now two women look like serious contenders for the presidential nomination — Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris, both of whom rose in the polls after strong performances in the first Democratic debate. Joe Biden is still in the lead, but Warren and Harris may be starting to chip away at one of the central conceits of the 2020 race so far: the idea that Biden has the best shot at defeating President Trump.
For months now, voters have told reporters that they want to elect a woman — but after Hillary Clinton’s loss in 2016, they simply can’t imagine a woman winning against Trump. And this calculus is often justified by beliefs about other people’s sexism — an Ipsos/Daily Beast poll in June, for example, found that only 33 percent of Democrats and independents said they believed that their neighbors would be comfortable with a female president. But the performances of Warren and Harris in the first debate may have allowed some of those voters to envision a path to victory for these candidates for the first time.
Even with Warren and Harris on the upswing, though, it’s hard not to wonder if sexism will still make it more difficult for a woman to win the nomination. After all, the other women in the race — including Kirsten Gillibrand and Amy Klobuchar, who seemed at the outset like promising contenders — are still barely registering in the polls. Whether these women are struggling because of their gender is pretty much impossible to say right now; in part, this is because there is, of course, no research to tell us how six female candidates might fare against 17 male competitors in a presidential primary.
But that doesn’t mean we’re completely in the dark about how sexism affects women’s electoral chances. Political science research has established that women who run for elected office have to navigate a thicket of stereotypes and double standards that their male counterparts are unlikely to experience. And while most scholars agree that partisanship usually overpowers voters’ biases about female leaders, no matter how deeply held, a long and crowded presidential primary could be especially challenging.
So with the caveat that we will learn a lot about gender and elections over the next 16 months (not that we’re counting), here’s a link-heavy introduction to what we know already — and how that could influence the Democratic primary.
