PolitiFact | 7 ways to avoid misinformation during the coronavirus pandemic
Heuristics for evaluating the integrity of information purporting to be about the SARS-CoV-2 virus or the COVID-19 pandemic, in a downloadable image: relatively bulky file size, but easy to post to e.g. Facebook, Twitter; and it makes third party edits a little harder to do without leaving obvious traces. From the website:

PolitiFact has fact-checked a lot of popular social media posts about the 2019 coronavirus, COVID-19.

We’ve debunked fake coronavirus cures, false news reports and conspiracy theories about the spread, as well as out-of-context images, bogus maps and even a fabricated reference from "The Simpsons."

PolitiFact will keep fact-checking these hoaxes as they surface — but we want our readers to be prepared, too.

So we’ve created a guide with seven ways to avoid falling for some of the most common falsehoods about epidemics like the coronavirus. Have a tip you want us to add or a post you want us to fact-check? Email

Opinion | Why Fox News Slimed a Purple Heart Recipient - The New York Times
Conspiracy theories are the opiate of the masses, and Fox News pumps them into the water supply: a subtler take than my realization, years ago, that they occupied some of the function of religious belief, in making the universe appear purposeful and understandable. From the article:

Weaponized and tribalized political video narratives in the hands of Fox News producers can become something like drug-abuse epidemics — keeping addicts of that conspiracy theory high and coming back for more.

Believing in conspiracy theories is a psychological construct for people to take back some semblance of control in their lives. It inflates their sense of importance. It makes them feel they have access to “special knowledge” that the rest of the world is “too blind,” “too dumb” or “too corrupt” to understand.

Stop AAPI Hate
Report racist incidents directed against Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) and related to the COVID-19 pandemic. From the website:

In response to the alarming escalation in xenophobia and bigotry resulting from the coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic, Asian Pacific Planning and Policy Council (A3PCON), Chinese for Affirmative Action (CAA) and San Francisco Asian American Studies Department have launched a reporting center to collect and track incidents of anti-Asian American and Pacific islander hate violence, adult harassment, discrimination, shunning, and child bullying in California and throughout the country. The reporting center will enable individuals who have been directly impacted by or witnessed firsthand this issue to share their stories at

The lead organizations plan to work with public, private and other community based organizations to develop targeted education and media campaigns, to provide resources for impacted individuals and to advocate for policies and programs dedicated to curtailing racial profiling.

“First and foremost, we want community members to know they are not alone; they can speak out and help stop the spread of bigotry. Secondly, the collected data will allow us to assess the extent and magnitude of these incidents and to develop strategic interventions,“ claims Cynthia Choi, the Co-Executive Director of Chinese for Affirmative Action.

“We are currently providing support to a child who had to go to the emergency room after he was assaulted and accused by bullies of having the coronavirus, and so that tells us we may need to work with schools to address shunning and school bullying but we need to know how widespread it is,” says Manjusha Kulkarni, the Executive Director of A3PCON.

Dr. Russell Jeung, chair and professor of Asian American Studies at San Francisco State University, notes, “Statements by elected officials, such as President Trump labeling COVID-19 as the “Chinese virus,” fuel xenophobia. In our research on news articles, we see that following inflammatory comments, there’s an increase of racist incidents against Asian Americans. Clearly, with such political framing, Asians of different ethnicities are being racially profiled as a foreign threat.”

“We know that many in our Asian American communities are suffering acts of discrimination, hate crimes and microaggressions due to fears of COVID-19. To address what is happening, we need your help. This reporting website will help us create effective policy solutions for long-lasting change with a deeper impact so this doesn’t happen again to our communities or any other community. We appreciate A3PCON, CAA and San Francisco State Asian American Studies Department for their leadership and look forward to continuing to partner with them,” stated Assemblymember David Chiu (D-San Francisco), Chair, California Asian Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus.

Manufacturer of the soft green A5 1.2mm writing mats (#605) I've bought from Nanami Paper; and as it turns out, of myriad rulers, protractors, magnifying glasses, card holders, and so on and so forth. Of course the insubstantial English version of the site doesn't allow you to actually order anything--although the contact form appears calibrated to would-be distributors or retailers. The image on the English version's home page (the one bookmarked here) is a hoot. Whose conception was that, I wonder?

I like the idea of their "Poetry by Post" as a gift. From the website:

Nestled along the brick main street in the small town of Ashland, Nebraska, Postscript is a boutique for paper, book, and lettering arts that brings a modern sensibility to antiquated processes. Focusing on high-quality craftsmanship and the handmade, Postscript carries everything you need for the art of writing, from letterpress printed cards and stationery sets to fountain pens and calligraphy supplies to luxurious finishing touches like vintage stamps, seals, and sealing wax. We also carry children's books that will make your heart soar, hardcover classics that are as arresting to behold as they are to read, and tools to construct your own handbound books. Postscript also offers a studio space in the back where we host workshops in calligraphy, bookbinding, paper crafts, watercolor, sign painting, and related pursuits taught by highly qualified instructors.

The back workshop space doubles, on the average day, as my personal studio, where I work as a book artist under the imprint of Pentameter Press Studio. Pentameter Press Studio is a circuitous outgrowth of my two passions -- literature and lettering. The focus of my artistic output is, in a line of pentameter, "poetry in penmanship and printing." I mean this, like any English major worth her salt, both literally and figuratively. My calligraphy and my printing almost always take as their textual foundation poems. Often Victorian poems (I suffer from Anglophilia) and just as routinely poems by women writers. But I am in love with poetry of all kinds and believe that poets as a group should be listened to, quoted, and revered far more than they tend to be. This is a belief I attempt to proselytize by framing heart-stopping language within a visual poetry of my own — a space where letterforms become not solely a means to meaning but an aesthetic end in and of themselves. Where word becomes image, writer becomes artist, and reader becomes viewer.

Daily activities for people wanting to make writing a part of their daily self-isolation routine. Per Vroman's. From the website:

#StayHomeWriMo is an initiative to help your physical, mental, social, and creative well-being.

We’ll be supporting you as long as you might need, and you can join us regardless of whether you’re planning to write for Camp NaNoWriMo in April or July. Let’s do this (6 feet apart but) together.

Wait, what’s happening?
Due to the measures many governments have taken and/or encouraged in response to coronavirus, the folks who are able to stay at home are doing so to protect their health and the health of their communities. Folks who provide vital services, including people who work at hospitals, grocery stores, and delivery services, continue to go to work to keep communities functioning.

Life has changed temporarily but drastically for many of us, and we are still in the process of adapting!

What’s #StayHomeWriMo?
We sent out a survey last week asking what we could do to help during this time, and so many of you responded! You asked for resources to help you engage your creativity and connect with others online while you and your household stay home and away from other people in person as much as possible.

In response, we put together seven weekdays worth of activities y’all might take on to support your physical, mental, creative, and social well-being — and we’re calling it #StayHomeWriMo!

NaNoWriMo is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides tools, structure, community, and encouragement to help people find their voices, achieve creative goals, and build new worlds — on and off the page.
NaNoWriMo believes in the transformational power of creativity. We provide the structure, community, and encouragement to help people find their voices, achieve creative goals, and build new worlds—on and off the page.

How to Make Aloe Vera Gel
The most authoritative instructions I found in a few minutes of searching.
What got me thinking was an inquiry in an online neighborhood group, by a woman who had alcohol to make her own hand sanitizer, but needed aloe vera gel. It was quite likely that an overgrown aloe plant loomed outside her window as she typed this post. I mean, they're all over the place here. And we often run outside and break off a leaf to smear the gel on a little cut or burn. So what does it take to make your own aloe vera gel? Not all that much: Mostly patience, for coaxing the natural gel out from the leaves.

Amazon Marketplace Fair Pricing Policy - Amazon Seller Central
I was looking for specific language regarding COVID-19-related price gouging, and found a policy including four rules, two of which are quoted below. The first of these seems to cover what I was looking for. (Now: How do I report it?) The second seems to be almost the rule for many products. Now that I know Amazon doesn't want that to happen...BWAH Hah ha ha!
From the website:

If we see pricing practices on a marketplace offer that harms customer trust, Amazon can remove the Buy Box, remove the offer, suspend the ship option, or, in serious or repeated cases, suspending or terminating selling privileges.

Pricing practices that harm customer trust include, but are not limited to:

Setting a price on a product or service that is significantly higher than recent prices offered on or off Amazon; or
Selling multiple units of a product for more per unit than that of a single unit of the same product.

Worried about 5G and Cancer? Here’s Why Wireless Networks Pose No Known Health Risk - TidBITS
From the article:

Can cell phones or Wi-Fi give you cancer? The answer is reasonably definitive: No. That’s equally true for new 5G cellular networks currently being rolled out worldwide, all previous cellular networks, and all versions of Wi-Fi.

Decades of research make it clear that the use of wireless networking, whether through mobile phones or Wi-Fi devices, carries with it no elevated risk for cancers or other diseases in humans. Some studies with rodents have garnered attention, but in a recent much-cited one that delivered a mix of results, some rats lived longer under high exposure to cellular signals than their control group counterparts.

The New York Times Reveals How Completely Our Every Move Is Tracked - TidBITS
With some tips on protecting yourself. From the article:

Anonymous sources provided the Times with a dataset from a single location data company that contained 50 billion pings from the phones of more than 12 million Americans over several months in 2016 and 2017. With the data, Times reporters Stuart A. Thompson and Charlie Warzel were able to track numerous people in positions of power, including military officials, law-enforcement officers, and high-powered lawyers. They were able to watch as people visited the Playboy Mansion, some staying overnight, and they could see visitors to the estates of Johnny Depp, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Tiger Woods. Once they identified any particular phone, they could track it wherever it went. Imagine what that data could be used for in the wrong hands.

Note to Millennials: Boomers didn't screw you. Conservatives did.
From the website:

Millennials today are rightfully anxious about their future and righteously angry that their parents' generation has generally done a piss-poor job of safeguarding their inheritance.

Millennials, it is often said, may be the first generation in American history to be worse off financially than their parents. Their list of grievances is long and daunting:

Staggering college debt
Stagnant wages
Unaffordable health care
The looming catastrophe of climate change
Exploding federal deficits that make it harder to finance solutions
A broken political system incapable of solving problems
But as the "OK, Boomer" meme still echoes around the country, I would like to argue that Millennials are spreading the blame too indiscriminately. It isn't Boomers who have caused your problems. It's conservatives.

Since about the time the first Millennials were born, beginning with the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980, America has been infected with a virulent, black-hearted, miserly, irresponsible, backward-thinking conservatism that has either created or exacerbated many of the problems young people face today.

The impact of the ‘open’ workspace on human collaboration | Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences
Open offices drive people away from each other. From the study's abstract:

Organizations’ pursuit of increased workplace collaboration has led managers to transform traditional office spaces into ‘open’, transparency-enhancing architectures with fewer walls, doors and other spatial boundaries, yet there is scant direct empirical research on how human interaction patterns change as a result of these architectural changes. In two intervention-based field studies of corporate headquarters transitioning to more open office spaces, we empirically examined—using digital data from advanced wearable devices and from electronic communication servers—the effect of open office architectures on employees' face-to-face, email and instant messaging (IM) interaction patterns. Contrary to common belief, the volume of face-to-face interaction decreased significantly (approx. 70%) in both cases, with an associated increase in electronic interaction. In short, rather than prompting increasingly vibrant face-to-face collaboration, open architecture appeared to trigger a natural human response to socially withdraw from officemates and interact instead over email and IM. This is the first study to empirically measure both face-to-face and electronic interaction before and after the adoption of open office architecture. The results inform our understanding of the impact on human behaviour of workspaces that trend towards fewer spatial boundaries.

How to stay focused in a noisy open office
Surviving the dangerous illusion of the open plan office. From the website:

“Rather than prompting increasingly vibrant face-to-face collaboration, open architecture appeared to trigger a natural human response to socially withdraw from officemates and interact instead over email and IM,” the study reads.

Another study of 456 employees in 20 regional office locations of an architectural firm published in Frontiers in Psychology, also found the negatives of shared workspaces to outweigh the positives. The architects and designers reported “significantly more unfavorable working conditions in terms of acoustical privacy, workplace effectiveness, attractiveness, and satisfaction compared with those working in the private offices, and, not surprisingly, they found it “significantly” more difficult to concentrate.

Samuel Pepys: Diary, Letters, Family Tree, Maps, Encyclopedia, Discussion and more
Of course there are online alternatives to the dead trees edition of Pepys' diary that my grandmother enjoyed so much. From the website:

In 1660 Samuel Pepys, an increasingly-important 26 year-old civil servant in London, began writing his diary. He stopped a decade later.

This site contains the full text of his diary, along with several letters sent or received by Pepys, plus thousands of pages of further information about the people, places and things in his world.

The diary entries were published on this site daily, in real time, from January 2003 until May 2012, with readers discussing events each day. From January 2013 the diary entries will again appear on the front page at the end of the day (London time), starting with 1 January 1660.

Welcome to The Rumpus! We’re thrilled you’re here. At The Rumpus, we know how easy it is to find pop culture on the Internet, so we’re here to give you something more challenging, to show you how beautiful things are when you step off the beaten path. The Rumpus is a place where people come to be themselves through their writing, to tell their stories or speak their minds in the most artful and authentic way they know how. We strive to be a platform for marginalized voices and writing that might not find a home elsewhere, and to lift up new voices alongside those of more established writers we love. We work to shine a light on stories that build bridges, tear down walls, and speak truth to power.
