Bitcoin Energy Consumption Index - Digiconomist
Bitcoin mining is estimated to consume more energy than Chile. Since much of this activity relies on coal-fired generation, it has a large carbon footprint.

Cast concrete seaway sections mimic mangrove structure, dissipating wave energy and providing more surface area for habitat. KU architecture professor Keith Van de Riet's baby, and in this context, his work with students on reproducing Prairie School architectural ornament makes a lot of sense.

"Mangrove Reef Walls are tidal habitats that increase habitat, dissipate wave energy and
increase the value of your waterfront property."

A Planet With Brains? The Peril And Potential Of Self-Aware Geological Change : 13.7: Cosmos And Culture : NPR
"As a planetary astrobiologist, I am focused on the major transitions in planetary evolution and the evolving relationship between planets and life. I want to frame our current time as a stage in the cosmic life of our planet. What I wonder most about the Anthropocene is not when did it start — but when, and how, will it end? Will it end? Or is it possible that our own growing awareness of our role on Earth can itself play a pivotal role in shaping the outcome toward one that we would desire?"

Welcome to the Sapiezoic – Jon Udell
"Will our descendants look back on the Anthropocene as the dawn of a fifth eon? Grinspoon makes a compelling case that they might. The Archean cyanobacteria that poisoned the environment couldn’t know what they were doing. We can. Our infrastructure is taking over the planet as surely as the oxygenated atmosphere did. But it is, at least potentially, under our conscious control. The hallmark of the Sapiezoic eon he envisions: intentional re-terraforming."

David Grinspoon: Earth in Human Hands - The Long Now
“Potentially,” Grinspoon suggested,”we’re at another eon boundary now, with an equally profound transition in the relationship between life and the planet, when cognitive processes become planetary processes. Is intelligence a planetary property, like life? Can it become a self-sustaining property, like life? Is civilization adaptive, or will it be a dead end?”

Mulch Delivery And Pickup
Are you a resident and property owner in Long Beach, California? Long Beach Sustainability will deliver mulch produced from tree trimming, free, 2.5 cubic yards at a time. (You can pick it up yourself for free, presumably without meeting those criteria.)
If this text from the website implies that 5,400 tons of green waste from tree trimming still go to landfills, we need to step up our game!

Every year the City of Long Beach produces an average of 12,000 tons of green waste from standard tree trimming maintenance. The City works to keep this resource from going to landfills by placing mulch on vacant property owned by the City. Every year, Operation Mulch-A-Lot places 6,000 tons of mulch on vacant City lots, with an additional 600 tons annually being delivered to Long Beach residents through our Mulch Delivery Program.

4 benefits of using an Aeron chair - Office Designs Blog
A blog post by discount retailer Office Designs cites Herman Miller's assertion that the Aeron chair is 94% recyclable--but the associated link simply goes to the online catalog's Aeron screen, rather than providing background to this claim. Warranty replacements of big hunks of plastic material (seat and back) have gotten me wondering about this, and about how to improve it.
