What sort of people become white nationalists? - Separated and unequal
the move from talking tough online to showing one’s face in the physical world had actual consequences. Some of the attendees at last year’s rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, lost their jobs and were publicly shamed; others faced lawsuits. Tech firms booted and shunned them.

On the eve of the march, George Hawley, a political scientist at the University of Alabama, dug into the demography of white nationalists—in particular, into the thesis advanced by Angela Nagle, the author of a book about the alt-right, that the decline of monogamy and traditional marriage has led low-status men to assert themselves through white-supremacist beliefs.

Mr Hawley posited three factors linking adherents of racist movements: a strong sense of white identity, belief in the importance of white solidarity and a sense of white victimisation. In 2016 the American National Election Survey asked respondents three revealing questions: on a five-point scale, they were to indicate how important race is to their identity, how important they think it is that “whites work together to change laws that are unfair to whites,” and how much discrimination they think whites face in America. Sometimes other white folks ask me the best way to be less of a Clueless White Person without demanding people of color expend effort teaching them, and I have a suggestion that will absolutely work. You won't wanna do it, but I'm going to tell you anyway.

Step 1) Follow at least 50 more people of color on social media ASAP.

Step 2) Read their posts, and don't reply to them unless they're addressed to you by name or they've addressed a non-rhetorical question to the general public. Not sure if it's rhetorical? Don't answer.

Step 3) Make this a habit, over a period of years.

Review: 'Dying of Whiteness: How the Politics of Racial Resentment Is Killing America's Heartland'
More broadly, Metzl explains, his research reveals “a reality that liberal Americans were often slow to realize: Trump supporters were willing to put their own lives on the line in support of their political beliefs … make tradeoffs that negatively affect their lives and livelihoods in support of larger prejudices or ideals.” The author “track[s] the full extent to which these political acts of self-sabotage came at mortal cost to the health and longevity of lower- and, in many instances, middle-income white GOP supporters—and, ultimately, to the well-being of everyone else.”

Metzl digs deep into the material effects of various Republican policies in three GOP-run states: Kansas, Missouri, and Tennessee. These policies “gave certain white populations the sensation of winning, particularly by upending the gains of minorities and liberals.” It was about “owning” those groups, apparently. The author adds that “the victories came at a steep cost.”

Four Mass Shootings Have Been Thwarted Since the El Paso Massacre, Authorities Say – Mother Jones
All four individuals arrested since El Paso for allegedly plotting mass shootings were heavily armed young white men. At least three of the four appeared to harbor hateful far-right views, especially toward Jewish, African American, and LGBTQ people.

Memo reveals a House Republican strategy on shootings: downplay white nationalism, blame left | Tampa Bay Times
Congressional Republicans recently circulated talking points on gun violence that falsely described the El Paso massacre and other mass shootings as “violence from the left.”

A document obtained by the Tampa Bay Times and sent by House Republicans provides a framework for how to respond to anticipated questions like, “Why won’t you pass legislation to close the ‘gun show loophole’ in federal law?” and “Why shouldn’t we ban high-capacity magazines?" The answers are boilerplate Republican arguments against tougher gun restrictions.

But it also included this question: “Do you believe white nationalism is driving more mass shootings recently?” The suggested response is to steer the conversation away from white nationalism to an argument that implies both sides are to blame.

EXCLUSIVE Republican lawmakers are being told to... - Pamela Mays McDonald
Republican lawmakers are being told to indulge in "both-siderism" to counter gun control arguments in the wake of domestic terror incidents. They are being instructed to distract from questions about white supremacism with #whataboutism lies about non-right-wing organizations and individuals. Expect to see this strategy continue to unfold as these instances proliferate. You'll hear "But Planned Parenthood kills babies" or other classic defenses. Online "sock puppets," trolls and bots will amplify these messages to millions. We have already seen Trump call for Antifa to be labeled as terrorists over the weekend.

They are not going to do anything about the threat of white nationalist domestic terrorism.

Tearing Off the Mask: Revealing the Gulf Between Fascist Spirituality and Pagan Practice
For fascists the Powers of Norse Paganism are convenient tokens for justifying their actions and hiding their true intentions. For White Teachers Teaching White Boys in the Suburbs
That said, I’ve also got a whole bunch of White boys, and the behavior issues I see in my class, the disengagement I get during lessons is coming from them and is not evidence of oppression, but rather the result of entitlement.
I Won’t Give an Inch to Let White Boys Make My Class Unsafe, But I’ll Support Their Growth

I spend a lot of my days worried about White boys.

I worry about White boys who barely try and expect to be rewarded, who barely care and can’t stand being called on it, who imagine they can go through school without learning much without it impacting in any way the capacity for their future success, just because it never has before. White boys who expect privilege to carry and protect them, because that’s what it does, without ever stopping to wonder if it works the same for everyone else.

I worry about White boys who say, who believe, that it is very, very hard to be a White boy right now. They see Black Lives Matter and Black Panther as evidence that White boys are the enemy, simply because they are slightly less likely to be shown as the hero. There are White Boys who feel like even learning about different people is somehow an attack against them.

I’m trying. I am. But you know how the saying goes: You can lead a White male to anti-racism, but you can’t make him think.

there are so, so many White Boys looking hard for a better path to walk. But then, there are so, so many White Boys looking hard for a better path to walk.

Jesse Enjaian: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know |
A University of Michigan law school graduate has been accused of shooting at police officers in Oakland. The suspect in the sniper standoff that took place on the morning of February 17 has been named as Jesse Enjaian, 32. CBS San Francisco reports that officers came under fire from a high-powered rifle after receiving reports of shots fired along Las Vegas Avenue in the city. A nearby highway was shut down and a high school was locked down as a result of the standoff. Enjaian eventually surrendered and was taken into custody by police.

White Supremacist Convicted of Terrorism in NY | Law & Crime
New York State just called out white supremacy for what it is – terrorism. In 2017, then-28-year old James Harris Jackson traveled to New York and prowled the streets for several days in search of black victims to “start a race war.” To further Jackson’s violent agenda, he fatally stabbed Timothy Caughman with a sword.

On Wednesday, the Caughman murder case came to a conclusion with Jackson pleading guilty to Murder in the First Degree in Furtherance of an Act of Terrorism, Murder in the Second Degree as a Crime of Terrorism, Murder in the Second Degree as a Hate Crime, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree. He is expected to receive the maximum sentence of life in prison when he is sentenced next month.

For White Women Learning Calculus in a School Building On Fire
So from one white woman to another, ten concrete steps to take right now if we hope to ever do math with women of color; the very math the doing of which is not optional if there is to be any hope of calling into existence the deep, robust multi-racial coalitions on which all of our lives depend.

No particular order here. Some of these steps fall in the category of “for the love of god, stop pouring gasoline!” Some fall in the category of our long, slow work. None is adequate. All are critical.

Sniper Who Fired On Oakland Officers Dies In Hospital « CBS San Francisco
OAKLAND (CBS SF) — Police have identified the man who triggered a tense standoff with police after firing a high-powered rifle at officers and residents near Bishop O’Dowd High School Friday morning as Oakland resident Jesse Enjaian.

An Oakland police officer shot Enjaian, who had been firing on residents as well as officers responding to the incident.

He was transported to a hospital and listed in serious condition, but police issued a statement at 8:14 p.m. confirming that the shooter had succumbed to his injuries

Police said that Enjaian lived at 9512 Las Vegas Ave in Oakland, the location where the standoff took place. He was a 2008 alum of UCLA and a 2013 alum of University of Michigan Law School.

Enjaian was the co-founder and computer engineer at the computer company Oakland Microsystems.

Police sources confirmed to KPIX 5 that officers had responded to Enjaian’s house earlier this week regarding either threats or a report of a gun.

The tense situation came to an end shortly before 10 a.m. when the suspect was arrested and hospitalized after being shot, police said.

The California Highway Patrol said the gunman had been “disarmed and detained” and helicopter video showed him being loaded into an ambulance.

Oakland police said later that Enjaian was in serious condition.

On Feb. 14, 2017, I was shot with a rifle by a sniper named Jesse Enjaian, a white guy. I was a homeless man sleeping in my car. I had parked for the night on the street in front of his house on the 9500 block of Las Vegas Avenue near Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland.

He shot out all four of my tires, all my windows, my dashboard got a bullet hole in it and my head was grazed by a bullet. I woke up to bullets flying, hit my horn, jumped out of my car and hollered for help.

Neighbors called the police. It was just before 8 a.m., and many were out getting in their cars to go to work or take their children to school. I’d been parking and sleeping on that block for a while and was known in the neighborhood.

I saw Jesse Enjaian standing in front of his house holding his rifle. I had no idea he was the shooter and asked him for help. He told me: “Get off my property, you fucking nigger! I’m the one who shot you.”

The police talked to seven eyewitnesses. Every one of them said that I was not the problem. “Jesse is the problem,” they said. “He’s got the gun.”

(4) Jan Steckel - So there was supposed to be a meet-up of the Proud...
So there was supposed to be a meet-up of the Proud Boys, an alt-right group, at Make Westing bar in Oakland tonight. Make Westing wasn't having any, and helped organize a protest against the meeting. Last night, however, a white man named John Cowell, who had recently been released from state prison for second-degree robbery, slit the throat of a Black teenager named #NiaWilson and stabbed her sister in the neck at Macarthur BART station. The injured sister held Nia while she bled to death. Today a thousand people marched for Nia in downtown Oakland. The Bay Area Proud Boys disavowed both the killer and the meet-up, which they claimed they hadn't set up and wouldn't attend. John Cowell was captured at Pleasant Hill BART station after he stood next to a young Black woman on the outbound train to Antioch. The young woman recognized his face (from surveillance photos which had been publicized), moved away from him, and called the police in terror while he stood next to another Black woman. Meanwhile, a crowd of 1,000 marched from a vigil for Nia Wilson to Make Westing, where five Proud Boys had the stupidity to show up. The crowd chased the Proud Boys, at which point the police intervened to protect them, drove them off in a squad car, and tear-gassed the crowd.

(60) Nichola Torbett - Okay, I can already hear how this is going to...
Okay, I can already hear how this is going to get spun, so I want to tell you what I saw with my own eyes. The community was gathered in a powerful, deeply felt, peaceful vigil and march in honor of the life of Nia Wilson and in protest of white supremacist violence. Some white supremacists showed up at the edge of the crowd, and the crowd began moving toward them to back them off, away from our folks. They ran, and others gave chase. At that point, I lost sight of them. When I came around the corner a few minutes later, the police had one of the white supremacist in handcuffs, seemingly taking him into protective custody. They also had at least one black man in cuffs. From what I could see, and from what everyone around me was saying, he had done absolutely nothing to warrant arrest. Folks were chanting, 'Let him go." Next thing I knew the street was filling up with police who were donning riot gear. I heard the command for the police to form a scrimmage line and at that point, I thought it best to walk away. I know the headline is going to say that the memorial turned violent. The memorial did NO SUCH THING. Violent people showed up, and the police colluded with them.

Today's "lone wolf" killers are actually a pack / Boing Boing
Their beliefs all pivot around the same poles: A matter-of-fact contempt for women and minorities, and a radioactively bitter sense that white guys ought to be easily and widely recognized as inherently superior to every other group. This commonality between their worldviews shouldn't be surprising, because -- as David Perry notes in Pacific Standard -- these supposedly "lone wolf" mostly-white-guy killers in recent years are, in fact, all in loose communication with each other online.

"They're reading the same websites, talking to each other, and killing the same targets. The lone wolves are actually a pack," as the headline reads, and as Perry goes on to write ...

These murders, mostly committed by white American men, reveal patterns, but they're not evidence of some kind of single, secret organization dedicated to committing white-supremacist violence.

Status threat, not economic hardship, explains the 2016 presidential vote | PNAS
When the people have spoken, the postelection narrative decides what it is they have said. Based on these results, it would be a mistake for people to understand the 2016 election as resulting from the frustration of those left behind economically. Instead, both experimental evidence and panel survey evidence document significant political consequences from a rising sense of status threat among dominant groups in the United States.

Lack of a college education was persistently noted as the strongest predictor of Trump support. This pattern led journalists with limited data toward economic explanations. However, education is also the strongest predictor of support for international trade, a relationship that is not tied to income or occupation so much as ethnocentrism (52). Negative attitudes toward racial and ethnic diversity are also correlated with low levels of education. In this election, education represented group status threat rather than being left behind economically. Those who felt that the hierarchy was being upended—with whites discriminated against more than blacks, Christians discriminated against more than Muslims, and men discriminated against more than women—were most likely to support Trump.

The Anger of the White Male Lie – Ijeoma Oluo – Medium
But white male anger is steeped in a lie. It is fighting for what they were never going to have. For the promises that were never going to be fulfilled. White men are the only people allowed to fully believe in the American dream and perhaps that is the cruelest thing to have ever been done to them and the world that has to suffer their anger as they refuse to let go of a fantasy that we were never allowed to imagine ourselves in.
White men who shoot up schools and workplaces are not murderous monsters, or mindless thugs. They are “lovesick” or “misunderstood” or “tragic.” Hundreds of thousands of words are dedicated to finding the reasons why someone with so much promise could have fallen so far.
But how much promise was there really?
How much promise is there in a life where you are told that all you have to do is exist in order to inherit a kingdom. How much promise is there in a life where your mediocrity is constantly applauded and every hero looks like you and every love interest is a supermodel, but at the end of the day you will be working in a cubicle with everyone else and your only consolation is that you will be making $1.50 an hour more than the women and people of color in your office?
How much promise is there in being told that your culture is the only one worth knowing, and that your language is the only one worth speaking? How much promise is there in never having to say your are sorry, never having to say you are wrong, never having to say you don’t know?

Paul Kivel | Guidelines for Being Strong White Allies
5. Understand the connections between racism, economic issues, sexism, and other forms of injustice.

6. Take a stand against injustice. Take risks. It is scary, difficult, and may bring up feelings of inadequacy, lack of self-confidence, indecision, or fear of making mistakes, but ultimately it is the only healthy and moral human thing to do. Intervene in situations where racism is being passed on.

7. Be strategic. Decide what is important to challenge and what’s not. Think about strategy in particular situations. Attack the source of power.

8. Don’t confuse a battle with the war. Behind particular incidents and interactions are larger patterns. Racism is flexible and adaptable. There will be gains and losses in the struggle for justice and equality.

9. Don’t call names or be personally abusive. Since power is often defined as power over others—the ability to abuse or control people—it is easy to become abusive ourselves.
However, we usually end up abusing people who have less power than we do because it is less dangerous. Attacking people doesn’t address the systemic nature of racism and inequality.

10. Support the leadership of people of color. Do this consistently, but not uncritically.

The Wolf I Feed. |
Recently at a yoga class in San Francisco, the mostly white students were told the story by a white teacher at the beginning, and at the end, we were instructed to “bow to the white wolf within”. Buddhist nun Pema Chodron has a whole two wolves curriculum, on how to feed the white wolf. In a Psychology Matters article “The story of the two wolves: managing your thoughts, feelings and actions”, the tagline reads: “Knowing which wolf you feed is the first step towards recognizing you have control over your own self.”

It has become a social media meme.

What is it about this story that makes it so enjoyable to hear and tell for non-Native folks? And for most of whom are white settler descendants?

Ten Ways White People can Stop Annoying People of Color on Social Media
When it comes to social media etiquette, we are all still learning how to interact with each other while respecting boundaries and the spaces we give ourselves.

What has translated over straight from our in-person interactions are racist, sexist and ableist micro and macro aggressions. How do we navigate those? Well it would help if folks with privilege recognized the ways in which they are routinely demanding labor from marginalized people online.

In regards to white folks and their anti-blackness, here is a list of 10 ways they can stop annoying people of color on social media:

1. When we post about racism – like being called racist names, racial harassment, feelings about being called racist things or being racially harassed – stop saying you’re shocked. Don’t say, “I can’t believe this still happens”. Don’t tell us all the ways you’re surprised because you’re either lying, or you haven’t been paying attention.

Black Educators Share Their Thoughts on What Happens When White Women Cry in Schools - Philly's 7th Ward
Let’s consider the ways in which this situation could have gone differently considering approaches in interpersonal relationships, team management, self-reflection, and systems management.

Interpersonal Relationships:What if Devin had addressed Nancy in the meeting and shared with her how her statement impacted him as a team member and as a Black man?  How might this conversation help the team to consider the perspective of Black males (students, staff, and parents) in their school differently?
Team Management: What if Michael held a meeting with both Nancy and Michael to discuss the tension and note how privilege can disrupt important conversations about students and families?
Team Management: What if Michael had addressed Nancy in the meeting to model the ways in which he, as a school leader, expected staff to engage?
Self-Reflection: What if Nancy asked herself if her tears were connected to the needs of students and parents or to her own needs?
Self-Reflection: What if Nancy decided to not share her comment unless she could do so in a respectful, productive way?
Systems Management:What if the human resources team and the principal’s manager saw this as an opportunity to coach school staff on how to talk about and proactively respond to privilege when it manifests in the workplace and distracts from focusing on students?
Systems Management: What if the school used this situation, and others like it, as a case study to support staff to engage in ongoing reflection about how privilege is to be a tool to focus more on students and families rather than to distract from it?
So, what can education organizations, school systems, schools, school leaders, and school leader managers do to ensure that we are not allowing White women’s tears to slow the advancement of equity with Black children?

Women's Suffrage Leaders Left Out Black Women | Teen Vogue
On November 8, 2016, when it seemed almost inevitable that Hillary Clinton would become America’s first female president, white women flocked to Rochester, New York, to plaster their “I Voted” stickers on Susan B. Anthony’s grave. Many of those women also wore all-white outfits to the voting booth as an homage to the suffrage movement, which secured white women’s right to vote on August 18, 1920. The singular focus on Anthony and her white women peers, including Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Carrie Chapman Catt, seemed to echo the historical maligning of black women activists, writers, and thinkers who were integral to the women's suffrage movement. While Anthony and Stanton are in history books — and will soon be on the $10 bill — their failure to check what many perceive as their racism worked against black women who were also denied access to the ballot box.
So I encouraged Twitter users to place “I Voted” stickers on the graves of some of those women, including Shirley Chisholm and Fannie Lou Hamer, who represent the fight to secure voting rights for black women, which continues today. Whether it was running for office, as Chisholm did when she became the first black woman to be elected to Congress, or encouraging black voter registration at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, as Hamer did, black women suffragists have put themselves in the line of fire over and over again. Voting rights can’t be divorced from civil rights, but unfortunately the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention — the first U.S.-held women's rights conference, organized by Lucretia Mott and Stanton — failed to address the racism and oppression faced by black women.

What Keeps Happening? White Men With Guns | Bitch Media
Columbine. Virginia Tech. Colorado Springs. Sandy Hook. Aurora, Colorado. Isla Vista, California, Roseburg, Oregon. Orlando. Too many cities in the United States are now indelibly associated with the mass shootings that have become, perhaps more than anything else, a hallmark of life in America. A tweet from journalist Dan Hodges—“In retrospect Sandy Hook marked the end of the US gun control debate. Once America decided killing children was bearable, it was over”—and the Onion article titled “‘No Way to Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens” surface each time, as chilling as they were the first time.

Since the devastating day five years ago at Sandy Hook Elementary, the nonprofit database Gun Violence Archive estimates that there have been at least 1,518 mass shootings that left at least 1,715 people dead and 6,089 wounded. Repeat: That’s in just the last five years. And this is happening at the same time that Congressional funding for research on gun violence as a cause of death has stalled out. And we all know why that is.

Artemis of Ephesus: A Goddess Who Represented an Ideal View of Blackness
In Greek, the concept of black or darkness is signified by melas, as opposed to leukos, meaning light or whiteness. Unlike the dire moral encumbrances later placed on these distinctions by Christian theology, to the Greeks they connoted the extremes of primary experiences such as good or ill fortune, life or death, and triumph or defeat. Blackness could symbolize courage, characterized by the martial prowess of dark-skinned Nubians. In a similar vein, the term “blackness of heart” served as a metaphor for compassion and warm feelings.

Stephen Paddock Is a White Male Mass Shooter. That Makes Him Typical.
Stephen Paddock was an angry white man with a gun. Robert Lewis Dear, who killed three people and injured nine at a Colorado Planned Parenthood, was an angry white man with a gun. Dylann Roof, who killed nine people and injured one at a black church in Charleston, South Carolina, was an angry white man with a gun. Adam Lanza, who killed 28 people including 20 children at Sandy Hook Elementary, was an angry white man with a gun. Hell, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, who killed 15 people and injured 24 at Columbine High School, were two angry white boys with guns. The Columbine massacre, which sparked a national conversation about the need for better gun control, was in 1999. It’s been 18 years of angry white men with guns appearing next to ever-more-enormous body counts, every few weeks, ever since.

Sure, there are outliers. Omar Mateen, who killed 49 people and wounded 58 at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, was an angry non-white man with a gun. James Alex Fields, who is charged with killing Heather Heyer and injuring 19 others at a white supremacist counter-rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, was an angry white man with a car. But as a general rule, if you check three out of four boxes on the “angry/white/man/gun” list, you do, indeed, fit the stereotypical profile of a mass shooter. The question is why so many of us refuse to see that.

How Europeans evolved white skin | Science | AAAS
ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI—Most of us think of Europe as the ancestral home of white people. But a new study shows that pale skin, as well as other traits such as tallness and the ability to digest milk as adults, arrived in most of the continent relatively recently. The work, presented here last week at the 84th annual meeting of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists, offers dramatic evidence of recent evolution in Europe and shows that most modern Europeans don’t look much like those of 8000 years ago.
First, the scientists confirmed an earlier report that the hunter-gatherers in Europe could not digest the sugars in milk 8000 years ago, according to a poster. They also noted an interesting twist: The first farmers also couldn’t digest milk. The farmers who came from the Near East about 7800 years ago and the Yamnaya pastoralists who came from the steppes 4800 years ago lacked the version of the LCT gene that allows adults to digest sugars in milk. It wasn’t until about 4300 years ago that lactose tolerance swept through Europe.

When it comes to skin color, the team found a patchwork of evolution in different places, and three separate genes that produce light skin, telling a complex story for how European’s skin evolved to be much lighter during the past 8000 years. The modern humans who came out of Africa to originally settle Europe about 40,000 years are presumed to have had dark skin, which is advantageous in sunny latitudes. And the new data confirm that about 8500 years ago, early hunter-gatherers in Spain, Luxembourg, and Hungary also had darker skin: They lacked versions of two genes—SLC24A5 and SLC45A2—that lead to depigmentation and, therefore, pale skin in Europeans today.

A white and wealthy Ohio man was found guilty of accepting more than $8,300 in food stamps and other welfare benefits, including Medicaid, over a two-year period for his suburban family.

The question now is, will he actually spend time in jail, or will being rich and white win out yet again?
However, as WKYC notes, Ohio law does suggest probation for low-level, first-time offenders, and Mahvi was convicted on a fifth-degree felony charge for food stamp fraud and a misdemeanor for making false or misleading statements in his Medicaid application, so whether or not he will receive adequate sentencing is yet to be seen.

Last year, Mahvi’s little scheme blew wide open after investigators revealed that he failed to disclose the entirety of his wealth, including his $800,000 Russell Township home, an in-ground swimming pool, multiple cars, stabled horses and undeveloped property that is tagged at being worth tens of millions of dollars in the beautiful Caribbean island of St. Lucia.

Judge finds Geauga County 'food stamp millionaire' guilty of welfare fraud |
CHARDON - Prosecutors say they will seek jail time for a wealthy Geauga County man convicted of fraudulently obtaining food stamps and Medicaid for his suburban family.

Pascal Mahvi, the so-called “Food Stamp Millionaire,” was convicted Friday of two fraud-related charges stemming from his acceptance of more than $8,300 in food stamps and other welfare benefits during a two-year span that ended with his arrest last year.

Mahvi and his attorney declined comment after Friday’s verdict. Mahvi is expected to be sentenced in four to six weeks.

Prosecutor James Flaiz said he will recommend that Mahvi serve some time in jail.

“We’re absolutely going to recommend time behind bars,” Flaiz said. “I think people have to understand, if you abuse the system that taxpayers have set up to help the poor, and you defraud that system, there needs to be consequences.”

Mahvi, 66, faces a maximum sentence of 18 months in prison, according to prosecutors. He could also be ordered to make restitution for the welfare benefits he received.

Ohio law, however, suggests probation for low-level, first-time offenders. Mahvi was convicted of a fifth-degree felony for food stamp fraud and a misdemeanor for making false or misleading statements in his application for Medicaid.

WKYC legal analyst and attorney Adam VanHo said Mahvi is unlikely to go to a state prison.

“For as egregious as this fraud was, Mr. Mahvi will most likely never see the inside of a prison cell,” VanHo said.

Turns out that the 'Antifa' group claiming they protested Red Sox game are actually right wingers
Racism Is as American as Baseball.”
WEEI and other traditional media outlets reported on Thursday that a Boston Antifa group took credit for the protest. WEEI has conveniently pulled down the post without an update or retraction. Why have they pulled it down?

The actual protesters who hung the banner denied any connection to Boston Antifa in an interview with CSNNE. And the people behind the social media pages do not actually believe the things they say -- because they are a pair of anti-leftist pranksters from Oregon who started Boston Antifa as a parody of actual anti-fascist groups.

Brandon and Alexis, whose Antifa characters "Dustin" and "Quinn" opine on subjects like how fidget spinners can trigger PTSD in hurricane victims, said as much last April in an interview with right-wing media personality Gavin McInnes.
In April, controversial right-wing personality, Gavin McInnes interviewed a couple said to be behind the group, in a segment called “Fun with fake ‘Antifa’ pranksters! Guests: @AntifaBoston.”

“There has been a tsunami of fake Antifa Twitter accounts and even videos,” McInnes said. “We spoke to one such group, first as their alter-egos ‘Boston Antifa,’ and then as themselves.”
McInnes is an “alt right” white supremacist who began a group called “The Proud Boys,” whose “pride” seems to reside in them being racist-snowflakes.

Omar Ismail's answer to I am white. That's all you know about me. Am I privileged based on that alone and assuming I am, should I feel guilt and what should I do about it? - Quora
Consider it this way. All I know about you is you’re tall.

Do you have any advantages?

What people are saying is:

Denying you are lucky is silly.
Stop looking bewildered every time a short person can’t reach something. We’re sick of explaining this incredibly simple concept.
We know there are things you do not have (i.e. even higher shelves).
We know there may be other things preventing you reaching the high shelves. Maybe you have bad elbows or arthritis. Short people with arthritis are still below you. You are still lucky you are tall.
It works out well for most people, for the grocery store to put most things on medium shelves.
If you can help shorter people with things on higher shelves, do so. Why would you not do that? Short people can help you with stuff on lower shelves.
We are annoyed that the people who run the grocery store put all the best stuff on the top shelves.
There are a lot of people who are putting things on higher shelves because they hate short people. Don’t associate with those people. They want everything to be about this height:
(picture of Hitler and Nazi salute)
Same with white. Advantages. It doesn’t mean you’re rich. It doesn’t mean you’re luckier than a lucky black guy. Nobody wants you to be crippled with guilt. Nobody has ever wanted that, or means those things.

It means you have an advantage, and all anyone is asking is that you *get* that. Once you get that, it’s pretty straightforward to all the further implications.

Donald Trump Is the First White President - The Atlantic
It is often said that Trump has no real ideology, which is not true—his ideology is white supremacy, in all its truculent and sanctimonious power. Trump inaugurated his campaign by casting himself as the defender of white maidenhood against Mexican “rapists,” only to be later alleged by multiple accusers, and by his own proud words, to be a sexual violator himself. White supremacy has always had a perverse sexual tint. Trump’s rise was shepherded by Steve Bannon, a man who mocks his white male critics as “cucks.” The word, derived from cuckold, is specifically meant to debase by fear and fantasy—the target is so weak that he would submit to the humiliation of having his white wife lie with black men.

Conversations on Racism With White People Getting Stuck or Looping? Thirteen Questions To Get It Moving Again
Question #9: If you woke up as a person of colour or indigenous person tomorrow in North America do you think it would change anything in your life? If so, what?

I love this question because it asks white people to really truly consider what they've been saying. "Would they want to be a person of colour? Would they really want to be native?"

Question #10: What year, roughly, was racial equality reached in North America? (Find examples)

If you can identify the year, I would suggest doing some research on incidents of clear, institutionalized racism that occurred in the years following and showing this to them  with the follow up question, "Then how do you explain this?"

Scalping In America - Indian Country Media Network
Scalping In America
When and where did scalping in America begin?
Dr. Dean Chavers • August 17, 2017
Scalping has long been a sensitive topic in the history of this country. The books, newspapers, magazines and films about Indians have almost always said Indians scalped their victims, but almost never did the whites scalp Indians. The opposite is true; both sides killed and scalped each other. After digging into it for my next book, “Indian Massacres in the U.S.,” I have found something much closer to the truth; both Indians and whites scalped each other, but whites got paid for it. Whites also did it to help the colonial legislature achieve their goal to exterminate all Indians and control their land in the budding United States.

Scalping was over 2,000 years old in Europe. Herodotus wrote in 440 B.C. that the Scythian soldiers scalped their dead enemies, softened them, and used them as napkins. The Scyths lived in the Black Sea area of Europe.

Scalping in England preceded the settlement of North America by at least four centuries. The Earl of Wessex, Harold Godwine, scalped his enemies as early as the 11th century, bringing the scalps back from battle to prove they were dead.

Homegrown Terrorism and Why the Threat of Right-Wing Extremism Is Rising in America
I consider domestic terrorism a more significant threat than the foreign-masterminded variety in part because it is more common in terms of the number of attacks on U.S. soil. For example, my report published by the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point identified hundreds of domestic terror incidents per year between 2008 and 2012.

White People, It’s Time To Prioritize Justice Over Civility
There can be no peace without justice. And it’s time white moderates prioritized justice above civility, and put the well-being and safety of people of color above their curiosity over that funny little man who makes feminists angry. It’s time for white folk to stop expressing personal displeasure when, say, some young activist calls them “oppressor,” instead of wondering what would lead someone to say that in the first place. White moderates have little to lose by maintaining the status quo, but much to gain by fighting against it.
Privilege is a blindspot that requires constant interrogation, and we can only hope that white people listen to us when they blunder, instead of flirting with the sympathetic eye of the Nazi.
But who said being a better person would be easy? Racism is primarily white people’s problem, even though people of color must face it every day. White people can help us by putting aside their white fragility — and, importantly, not making it our problem to manage — and start fighting white supremacy alongside us: Start by listening to our opinions on race, instead of your gut reaction and feelings of being attacked.
That is what we need, that is how we progress, that is how we obtain justice.

Yes, You Can Measure White Privilege
Not only can we see it, but we can actually measure it. If we begin viewing it as an economic term—the same way we use “trickle-down economics”—then it might be debatable, but it becomes a real, definable thing that we can acknowledge, explain and work toward eliminating. Race might be a social construct, but white privilege is an economic theory that we should define as such:

White privilege: n. The quantitative advantage of whiteness
Here are four examples that explain white privilege in economic terms.

The Distress of the Privileged | The Weekly Sift
As the culture evolves, people who benefitted from the old ways invariably see themselves as victims of change. The world used to fit them like a glove, but it no longer does. Increasingly, they find themselves in unfamiliar situations that feel unfair or even unsafe. Their concerns used to take center stage, but now they must compete with the formerly invisible concerns of others.

If you are one of the newly-visible others, this all sounds whiny compared to the problems you face every day. It’s tempting to blast through such privileged resistance with anger and insult.

Tempting, but also, I think, a mistake. The privileged are still privileged enough to foment a counter-revolution, if their frustrated sense of entitlement hardens.

So I think it’s worthwhile to spend a minute or two looking at the world from George Parker’s point of view: He’s a good 1950s TV father. He never set out to be the bad guy. He never meant to stifle his wife’s humanity or enforce a dull conformity on his kids. Nobody ever asked him whether the world should be black-and-white; it just was.

George never demanded a privileged role, he just uncritically accepted the role society assigned him and played it to the best of his ability. And now suddenly that society isn’t working for the people he loves, and they’re blaming him.

It seems so unfair. He doesn’t want anybody to be unhappy. He just wants dinner.

y'all have read about the recent statistical analysis comparing deaths per 100,000 that noted an uptick in white American mortality, that spawned a series of comments on "white despair", yes? (If this doesn't sound familiar, links are in the great article listed in the comments).
But here's the kicker. That research compared mortality of *white* Americans to mortality rates in various European countries. I asked, on a friend's post, what the same data might look like for Black Americans. He graciously amended the chart -- take a look, the perspective is breathtaking.

Dylann Roof To Plead Guilty To Murder Charges, Avoid Death Penalty
Dylann Roof will receive a life sentence after pleading guilty to murdering nine Black victims in South Carolina’s historic Emanuel AME Church in 2015. Doing so will prevent him and, most importantly, the victims’ families from having to endure a second trial to sentence him to the death penalty.

Ninth Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson was originally pursuing the death penalty, but agreed to accept his guilty plea and sentence him to life in prison instead, according to The Post and Courier.

“I write with great news that the State’s case is ready to wrap up. As I told you towards the end of trial and in other updates, at this point our goal is to provide an insurance policy to the federal conviction and sentence. The most effective way to do that is to secure a guilty plea for a life sentence and get the defendant into federal custody,” Wilson wrote in a letter to the families.

Police Did Not Arrest East Oakland Shooter Despite Two Earlier Gunfire Incidents In A Week At His Home
By Ali Winston
Jesse Enjaian died on Friday after a shootout with Oakland police — the third in a week.
Jesse Enjaian, a 32-year-old computer science engineer, died in Highland Hospital yesterday after a bizarre standoff where he fired a .22 caliber rifle at his East Oakland neighbors, a news helicopter, and Oakland police officers.

No one besides Enjain – who was arrested after being shot by the police – was injured.

Records obtained by the Express, however, reveal that the Oakland police had responded to two reports of gunfire involving Enjaian in the past eight days. The police did not arrest or detain him on either occasion, despite physical evidence and witness statements.

What's more, neither shooting appears in the official daily log, which is released by OPD. Only the Friday shooting that ended in Enjaian's death is noted — even though all three were documented by officers.

Enjaian is a former student and classmate of Schomp's at the University of Michigan Law School. Enjaian alleges that on December 9, 2011, Schomp made a phone call to the University Department of Public Safety complaining about two email messages that Enjaian sent to the entire Law School. Following Schomp's phone call, university police obtained a search warrant to search Enjaian's apartment for evidence related to criminal stalking. Police seized a laptop, cell phone, MP3 player, and four external hard drives from Enjaian's apartment. Enjaian claims that the police held his property for 446 days before they returned it to him.

Enjaian further alleges that on March 27, 2012, Schomp emailed Defendant Sergeant Jose Dorta, a University of Michigan police officer, claiming that Enjaian possessed a firearm and "intended to use it during an act of mass-homicide." Specifically, Enjaian states:

Schomp wrote to Dorta and another employee that she `has considered where the best place in the Law School would be to hide in the event that Enjaian came to the School with a gun' and that a mutual friend told her he was `so concerned about his girlfriend's safety with regard to Enjaian, that he came over to her dorm room right away carrying a baseball bat.'

Third white terrorist arrested in less than a week; White Americans: 3, Muslims: 0
Ex-convict and white supremacist Benjamin McDowell, 28, was arrested after buying a handgun and ammunition from an FBI agent for $109.

McDowell had complained on facebook that fellow white supremacists were all talk and no action: "All they wanne (sic) do is stay loaded on drugs the Jews put here to destroy white man and they feast on the drugs. they should be Feasting on the enemy that stole their Heritage and their bloodline" he wrote, also citing Dylan Roof, the white mass murderer sentenced to death for the murder of a group of black churchgoers.

Authorities began investigating McDowell in December after he posted threats to a synagogue on Facebook.

Since President Trump was sworn in, vowing to keep America safe from terrorism, and issuing a travel ban against Muslim countries that was later blocked by the courts, this is the third white American to be investigated for a terrorist plot.

APTP statement on OPD shooting of white supremacist terror suspect Jesse Enjaian — APTP
Disturbingly, local media coverage of OPD’s accidental killing (they elected not to shoot to hit center mass) of Enjaian parallels that of the convicted rapist who happened to attend Stanford University and of the many white men who have used firearms to commit terror attacks on communities of color in recent history. The assumption is that past academic or sports achievements somehow negate a propensity for predatory behavior. Examples and research demonstrating the very consistent profile of mass shooters in the United States show us that this is an intellectually lazy assertion. SFGate reports that Enjaian’s prior stalking victim in Michigan, “submitted a complaint that Enjaian had a gun and had expressed interest in using it in an “act of mass homicide.””

U.S. lawmaker Sean Duffy irresponsible to consider Muslim terrorism worse than same acts perpetrated by whites | Miami Herald
Duffy is wrong about pretty much everything else, too. No white extremist groups fomenting terror? What do you call the Aryan Nations and the Ku Klux Klan? The Southern Poverty Law Center has tied one group, Stormfront, to acts of murder and terror that have killed nearly 100 people.

As for Duffy’s belief that white extremist terror is somehow rare, well, the 1996 bombing of the Atlanta Olympics, the 1999 attack on a Jewish community center near Los Angeles, the 2000 killing of five people in greater Pittsburgh to protest “non-white immigration,” the 2009 murders of three Pittsburgh police officers to oppose a supposed national gun ban, the 2012 murder of six people at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin., and the 2015 killing of three at a Planned Parenthood office in Colorado Springs, (to name a few), argue otherwise.

Go further back and there is the 1963 bombing of 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham that killed four little girls. Go beyond these shores and there is the 2011 attack in Norway in which 77 people died.

Terrorism is defined as the unlawful use of violence to coerce or intimidate a government or a people in furtherance of some social or political cause. But for Rep. Duffy and others that seems to apply only to swarthy individuals with difficult names. When white people do it, it is less likely to be perceived — or reported by news media — as terrorism.

Minnesota man who shot 5 Black Lives Matter protesters found guilty - CBS News
MINNEAPOLIS - A jury on Wednesday convicted a Minnesota man of assault for opening fire and wounding five men demonstrating against the fatal shooting of a black man by Minneapolis police officers.

Allen Scarsella, 24, of Bloomington, was found guilty on all charges of assault and riot. Scarsella showed no emotion as the Hennepin County jury’s verdict was read.CBS Minnesota reports that the jury deliberated for seven hours.

Scarsella was accused of shooting and injuring the five African-American men at a Black Lives Matter protest after the police shooting death of Jamar Clark in 2015.

Scarsella and three other men, all wearing face masks, went into an encampment outside a police station in north Minneapolis to livestream Black Lives Matter protests that had closed down a city block. Scarsella, who has a permit to carry a concealed weapon, brought a .45-caliber handgun and fired at demonstrators in what his attorneys say was self-defense.

CBS Minnesota reports that jurors saw numerous text messages Scarsella sent friends, including one saying, “Cool – the gun I’m getting is proven to kill black guys in a single shot.”

Prosecutors argued that the shootings were racially-motivated. The station reports that Scarsella was identified in a video taken the night of the shootings waving a handgun and making racially-charged statements about the Black Lives Matter protesters. In one video that was shot in a car while Scarsella and a friend were driving to an earlier protest, Scarsella is heard saying he is “on a mission” and “locked and loaded” while holding a gun.

White Terrorists Kill More Americans than Jihadists
While Ted Cruz and Donald Trump are using the Brussels attack to foment Islamophobia amongst their respective bases, it’s important to note that white terrorists have killed more Americans on U.S. soil than Muslim terrorists since the 9/11 attacks.

The New America Foundation (NAF), a think tank funded by prominent universities and foundations, has been keeping track of all terrorist attacks on American soil since 9/11, and found that not only have white terrorists killed more Americans than jihadists, but attacks by white terrorists are also twice as frequent, with 18 homegrown terror attacks between 2004 and 2015, and just 9 terror attacks rooted in Islamic extremist ideology.

What happened to black Germans under the Nazis | The Independent
The 1935 Nuremberg Laws stripped Jews of their German citizenship and prohibited them from marrying or having sexual relations with “people of German blood”.

A subsequent ruling confirmed that black people (like “gypsies”) were to be regarded as being “of alien blood” and subject to the Nuremberg principles. Very few people of African descent had German citizenship, even if they were born in Germany, but this became irreversible when they were given passports that designated them as “stateless negroes”.

Goebbels love nest could be demolished over 'Nazi shrine' fears
In 1941, black children were officially excluded from public schools, but most of them had suffered racial abuse in their classrooms much earlier. Some were forced out of school and none were permitted to go on to university or professional training. Published interviews and memoirs by both men and women, unpublished testimony and post-war compensation claims testify to these and other shared experiences.

Employment prospects which were already poor before 1933 got worse afterwards. Unable to find regular work, some were drafted for forced labour as “foreign workers” during World War II. Films and stage shows making propaganda for the return of Germany’s African colonies became one of the few sources of income, especially after black people were banned from other kinds of public performance in 1939.

(15) “White Power!” the Nazi’s shouted, “White... - Victoria Larnach
“White Power!” the Nazi’s shouted, “White Flour?” the clowns yelled back running in circles throwing flour in the air and raising separate letters which spelt “White Flour”.
“White Power!” the Nazi’s angrily shouted once more, “White flowers?” the clowns cheers and threw white flowers in the air and danced about merrily.
“White Power!” the Nazi’s tried once again in a doomed and somewhat funny attempt to clarify their message, “ohhhhhh!” the clowns yelled “Tight Shower!” and held a solar shower in the air and all tried to crowd under to get clean as per the Klan’s directions.
At this point several of the Nazi’s and Klan members began clutching their hearts as if they were about to have a heart attack. Their beady eyes bulged, and the veins in their tiny narrow foreheads beat in rage. One last time they screamed “White Power!”
The clown women thought they finally understood what the Klan was trying to say. “Ohhhhh…” the women clowns said. “Now we understand…”, “WIFE POWER!” they lifted the letters up in the air, grabbed the nearest male clowns and lifted them in their arms and ran about merrily chanting “WIFE POWER! WIFE POWER! WIFE POWER!”

The murder of Alan Berg in Denver: 25 years later – The Denver Post
Even after a quarter century, the violent murder of Denver talk-radio icon Alan Berg at the hands of a white supremacist group reverberates amid fresh reminders of hate crimes.

It has been 25 years since Berg was gunned down in the driveway of his Congress Park condominium, and the commemoration comes just days after a white supremacist allegedly opened fire at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., killing a security guard.

Berg, who was Jewish, gained a strong following in the early 1980s through talk radio, where his liberal views mixed with a combative and often-abrasive on-air persona. In the process, he ignited the anger of The Order, a splinter group of the Aryan Nation white nationalist movement that financed its anti-government goals with bank robberies in the Pacific Northwest — before turning to murder.

These are the real reasons women voted for Trump – and they’re terrifying | The Independent
There’s another factor at work too. Working-class women without an education often find the only way they can exert power and control in their own lives is through their influence as mothers and matriarchs. It is quite understandable that those who have little financial freedom or opportunity seek to exploit social power in other ways, seek to protect that right to do so.

Donald Trump's most controversial quotes
show all
For some, the forces of feminism can seem like the pressure to give up what little power they do have (in the home) in favour of the chance to progress in a sphere where they have very little power and know they are unlikely to obtain much future power (the workplace). For those women, the image of Hillary Clinton strolling up the neatly-mown lawns towards the door of White House on her first day as the first female president perhaps felt less like the opening of the gates of opportunity than a retreat from the only opportunities those women have.

Of course, that is a gross misinterpretation of feminism, which has always been about giving women and men the power to exert choice over how they live their lives both within and outside the home. But it’s easy to understand how such perceptions are formed – particularly when so many women who talk openly about the need for feminism are college-educated and use terminology and life experiences to describe their desires that are utterly alien to the women they are trying to reach.

The white flight of Derek Black - The Washington Post
Derek began to feel detached from the person he had been.

But then came the election campaign of 2016, and suddenly the white nationalism Derek had been trying to unlearn was the unavoidable subtext to national debates over refugees, immigration, Black Lives Matter and the election itself. Late in August, Derek watched in his apartment as Hillary Clinton gave a major speech about the rise of racism. She explained how white supremacists had rebranded themselves as white nationalists. She referenced Duke and mentioned the concept of a “white genocide,” which Derek had once helped popularize. She talked about how Trump had hired a campaign manager with ties to the alt-right. She said: “A fringe movement has essentially taken over the Republican Party.”

It was the very same point Derek had spent so much of his life believing in, but now it made him feel both fearful for the country and implicated. “It’s scary to know that I helped spread this stuff, and now it’s out there,” he told one of his Shabbat friends.

The phrase “white lives matter” has recently come to be considered by many as a typically racist response to the Black Lives Matter movement. But since white and black lives BOTH matter, should the groups work together and support each other instead of butting heads?

According to Dennis Romero of LA Weekly, one group of mostly African-American civil rights leaders is stepping up to question a deputy’s shooting of an unarmed, white, homeless man in Castaic — because it just might be the right thing to do.

“We can’t only be advocates when black people are killed by police unjustly,” says Najee Ali, founder of Project Islamic Hope.

Ali is organizing a coalition of civil rights groups, including Project Islamic Hope, the National Action Network and the L.A. Urban Policy Roundtable, which will call on state Attorney General Kamala Harris to launch an investigation of the shooting.

What I Told My White Friend When He Asked For My Black Opinion On White Privilege — Everyday Feminism
5. When I got accepted to Harvard (as a fellow AP student, you were witness to what an academic beast I was in high school, yes?), three separate times I encountered white strangers as I prepped for my maiden trip to Cambridge that rankle to this day.

The first was the white doctor giving me a physical at Kaiser.

Me: “I need to send an immunization report to my college so I can matriculate.”

Doctor: “Where are you going?”

Me: “Harvard.”

Doctor: “You mean the one in Massachusetts?”

Wear Out The Silence
“Wear Out The Silence” is a campaign asking white people to wear Black Lives Matter t-shirts every Friday as a way for us to bring the racial-justice conversation deeper into our daily lives. We want to use these conversations to move more white people into action, and to make visible the many people supporting the Movement For Black Lives.

We have heard the leaders of this movement call upon white people to “break white silence.” While this campaign specifically asks white people to answer this call, we encourage and welcome people of any race who want to participate.

Wear Out The Silence is a partnership with Bay Area Showing Up For Racial Justice.

30 Days of White Privilege — Medium
30 Days of White Privilege
The straw that broke the camel’s back was a New York Times comment section.
“There is no such thing as white privilege. It’s something the liberal media created. Black people and white people have the same opportunities now. Stop being sheep and get over it.”
In response, I took on my own Facebook challenge. For one month I would post daily status updates regarding my own white privilege.
Once I had finished, I was asked to compile these observations.
They follow, for better or worse, verbatim:

What I Told My White Friend When He Asked For My Black Opinion On White Privilege
So that I may be enlightened, can you please share with me some examples of institutional racism that have made an indelible mark upon you? If I am to understand this, I need people I know personally to show me how I’m missing what’s going on. Personal examples only. I’m not trying to be insensitive, I only want to understand (but not from the media). I apologize if this comes off as crass or offends anyone.
Here’s my response:

Hi, J. First off, I hope you don’t mind that I’ve quoted your post and made it part of mine. I think the heart of what you’ve asked of your friends of color is extremely important and I think my response needs much more space than as a reply on your feed. I truly thank you for wanting to understand what you are having a hard time understanding.

Coincidentally, over the last few days I have been thinking about sharing some of the incidents of prejudice/racism I’ve experienced in my lifetime, In fact, I just spoke with my sister Lesa about how to best do this yesterday, because I realized many of my friends ― especially the white ones ― have no idea what I’ve experienced/dealt with unless they were present (and aware) when it happened.

KING: White men killed most cops in 2016, conservatives silent - NY Daily News
Would it shock you to learn that the number of police who've been shot and killed in 2016 is up an astounding 59% from where it was this same date last year? Seventeen police officers have already been shot and killed in 2016, by mid-May. Only 10 had suffered that fate by May 10th, 2015.

The drastic increase shocked the hell out of me. While I primarily track, study and report the number of people killed by police, I still follow police fatalities closely. Contrary to popular belief, despising police brutality does not mean I despise police officers. I appreciate all public servants and have both a police officer and a longtime Secret Service member in my family. They are amazing, kind-hearted men who do great work. I also despise gun violence and loathe every single fatality suffered because of it.

Something's afoot, though, on why we're not hearing much about this shocking increase in the number of officers who've been shot and killed so far in 2016. Sadly, I think I have the answer.

Seventy-one percent of police who've been shot and killed this year weren't murdered by black men with cornrows or hoodies. They weren't gunned down by Latino gang members in low-rider drive-bys. Those stereotypes would be too convenient. Instead, 71% of police who've been shot and killed so far in 2016 have been killed by good old-fashioned white men.

True Confessions Of A White Supremacist - The Establishment
How am I a white supremacist? Well, I was born and raised in the United States of America, a country built by slave labor on stolen land, and every privilege I’ve ever enjoyed has come at the expense of someone else’s oppression. The education I received was white supremacist education, from its demand that I learn to write and speak “proper English” to its reliance on a literary, scientific, and artistic canon comprised of and curated almost exclusively by white men. My aesthetic tastes are permeated with subtle coding that extends subconscious preference to those who look like me and communicate themselves in a way I can identify with. I have interjected my unwanted, unwarranted opinion into conversations that are out of my lane, and I have chosen to look the other way rather than confront instances of racism because of cowardice, complacency, and a misplaced sense of politeness. The very foundations of my way of life are in white supremacy, and the list of microaggressions I have committed, and will no doubt continue to commit in spite of my “good intentions” for as long as I’m alive, is virtually endless.

Does this mean I should just give up trying to fight my own colonizing, racist impulses? On the contrary, I see this as a call to fight harder, to never stop working on this part of myself. But at no point, now or in the future, will I ever be entitled to declare this work done. I will never be able to truthfully announce “There is not a racist bone in my body!” as though racism is something that could be surgically removed. My racism is a chronic, inherited condition. I can medicate the symptoms, and with effort I can even loosen its grip around my soul, but it will always be part of me, like green eyes or a predilection for dumb puns.

David Lenio Reloaded? - Flathead Beacon
After David Joseph Lenio tweeted threats to shoot up a grade school in Kalispell, and put two bullets in the head of a rabbi, law enforcement agencies from three states plus the FBI mobilized to identify and stop him – and they did. He faces one felony count of intimidation.

When Lenio was arrested on February 16, Police Chief Roger Nasset told the Flathead Beacon that he posed “a very real threat” to Kalispell’s grade schools and Jewish community. He said, “I did not want children’s blood on my hands because I didn’t do everything I could.”

Each of us writing this piece knows what it is to be threatened by Lenio. One of us (Francine) is one of only two Flathead Valley rabbis and has kids in the local schools. Lenio tweeted to the other of us (Jonathan) to ask where his kids go to school.

Lenio crossed the line between hate speech and hate crime. When he moved to Montana in December 2014, he repeatedly tweeted his intent to shoot up a Kalispell grade school. From then until his arrest, his threats escalated – repeating his intentions with more details and further revealing his hate-filled motivations.

McSweeney’s Internet Tendency: Product Review: The Invisible Backpack of White Privilege from L.L. Bean
The backpack comes in different colors, more recently Irish, Italian, and Buffalo Plaid.

The Invisible Backpack of White Privilege is great for carrying questionable things like weed, Ponzi schemes, and sex crimes. I have lived in dense urban areas my whole life, and the cops never once search my Invisible Backpack. Then again, that’s probably just because, like people always tell me, I have a really trustworthy vibe as a person.

My roommate Sam has a visible backpack from The North Face, which he says cost him so much that he and his family are still paying for it, whatever that means. Personally, I prefer function over trend. Sam had the nerve to suggest that if I were to trade my backpack for his backpack, I’d see what he means. I told him if he’s really that dissatisfied with his own backpack, he should just return it to the store and buy one like mine instead of criticizing me all the time, because from what I can see, my backpack’s only advantage is that it comes with a more positive attitude and frugal spending habit than all the other backpacks. He got really quiet and things between us have grown uncomfortable.

The backpack also includes one or more upwardly mobile forefathers who had special opportunities to garner and accumulate family wealth during times of legalized overt discrimination against people without Invisible Backpacks. According to the L.L. Bean catalogue, my great-grandfather was “A poor country boy who put himself through Harvard in the 1800s and worked incredibly hard to build a fortune on nothing but his own merits.” I guess that’s one of the backpack’s cooler features, but it’s not like it changes the fact that I have to do the work of picking up and putting on and walking around with a backpack on my back, just like anybody else.

White Terrorism: The White Supremacy of Anti-Abortion Extremism -
For white supremacists, the decline in the number of white births is directly tied to their fear of a decline in white dominance in the U.S.  In this worldview, fewer white births is due to two factors. First, they contend there are fewer white women are who are willing to become pregnant and give birth to white children. Second, they believe that white women are quick to have abortions (or easily persuaded to do so) and are nonchalant about them afterwards.

The apparent willingness of white women to have abortions is counterposed against both anti-Blackness and anti-Semitism. For white supremacists are convinced that white women are having too many abortions, but Black women are having too few. And, they believe that Jewish men (mostly as doctors) and Jewish women (as feminists and champions of abortion) are behind this as a form of racial annihilation. I saw this again and again in the text of the publications I analyzed, as well as in the illustrations.

The White Racial Innocence Game -
I want to take some time to explain how systemic racism operates in HWCUs (historically white colleges and universities).

First, whites need to understand that most colleges and universities in the USA are white-oriented and white-led. This is why I call them HWCUs and, as I have argued many times in my FB (Facebook) posts, these institutions reproduce whiteness through their curriculum, culture, demography, symbols, traditions, and ecology. The white innocence game begins with the assumption that these spaces are racially neutral, but that assumption is false! HWCUs were 100% white institutions until very recently and that white history shaped them in profound ways. The admission of a few people of color in the late 1960s and 1970s into HWCUs—and I must point out that their admission was because people of color protested and demanded inclusion—did not lead to their “integration,” a concept that involves much more than spatial cohabitation. In fact, many ways whites, the W in HWCUs, have remained central to their organization and culture. We were brought into these places as guests with the expectation that we would not ask for anything else—we have been for a long time but few dots of color in otherwise white canvasses. (As an aside, part of the white innocence game is the belief by whites that we are ungrateful for all they have done for us; for all they have given us over the years. To this “white sincere fiction” (Feagin and Vera, White Racism), given that we fought for our freedom and partial inclusion in America, I say, “Thank you massa!”)

Second, whites were not, and are still not, happy with our presence in universities. They think (and some even tell us to our face) that we are all “affirmative action babies.” We all know how horrible the first black and Latino folks who “integrated” (they were just the firsts guests in white canvasses) were treated in these places, but what many whites outside and inside the academy do not know—or pretend NOT no know–is that people of color are still treated as second-class members in the academy.

The Top 3 Times Law Enforcement Let White People Wild Out in 2015 | Colorlines
In the spring, white open-carry activist Jim Cummings walked around Atlanta's bustling Hartsfield-Jackson airport with an AR-15 assault rifle strapped to his back. As you can hear in his video above, he didn't take kindly to the fire marshal who asked him why he had a machine gun at the airport. He actually gave him a lecture. Cummings also blew off law enforcement officials, insisting that he was acting in accordance with the state's open-carry laws. The authorities who stopped him responded—with more discussion. Given how people who "look Muslim" are routinely profiled at airports and how police shoot black people carrying toy guns, it's difficult to imagine a person of color toting a machine gun at Hartsfield-Jackson and making it out on his own two feet.

white women’s tears | Abagond
White women’s tears can come about in different ways, but here is the classic scene:

A white woman says something racist.
A black woman points it out. (It could be any person of colour but it works best against black women for reasons given below.)
The white woman says she is not racist and starts crying.
For added effect the white woman can run out of the room.
Other whites, particularly white men, come to the aid and comfort not of the wronged black woman but of the racist white woman!
The black woman, the wronged party, is made to seem like the mean one in the eyes of whites.
The white woman continues to believe she is not racist.
Tables turned! It works so well that it is hard not to see the tears as a cheap trick.

This is more than just a woman using tears to get her way. It is built on a set of White American ideas about race, listed here in no particular order:

It works best when these two stereotypes can be applied:
The Sapphire stereotype – black women as mean, angry and disagreeable
The Pure White Woman stereotype – white women as these special, delicate creatures who need to be protected at all costs. It is what drives the Missing White Woman Syndrome – and, in the old days, lynchings.
The r-word: to be called a “racist”, however gently and indirectly, is a terrible, upsetting thing for white people – far worse than, you know, being a racist.
White people and their feelings are the centre of the known universe.
Hearts of stone: meanwhile whites seem to have a very, very hard time putting themselves in the shoes of people of colour.
Moral blindness: white people think they are Basically Good, therefore if someone points out something bad about them it must be out of hatred.
White solidarity: whites are afraid to stand up against racism, particularly when they are with other whites. Also, they do not like it when you call other whites racists – they seem to take it personally for some rea

White Women’s Tears and the Men Who Love Them -
White tears are a reminder to people of color that white people don’t notice racism on a daily basis; we only notice racism when the media presents it to us loudly enough.

There has been much critique lately of “white tears.” This term refers to all of the ways, both literally and metaphorically, that white people cry about how hard racism is on us. In my work, I consistently encounter these tears in their various forms, and many writers have provided excellent critiques. Here, I want to address one specific manifestation of white tears: those shed by white women in cross-racial settings.
As the meeting started, I told my fellow white participants that if they felt moved to tears, to please leave the room.
The following example illustrates both people of color’s frustration with those tears and white women’s sense of entitlement to freely shed them. When another police shooting of an unarmed black man occurred, my workplace called for an informal lunch gathering of people who wanted to connect and find support. Just before the gathering, a woman of color pulled me aside and told me that she wanted to attend but she was “in no mood for white women’s tears today.” I assured her that I would handle it. As the meeting started, I told my fellow white participants that if they felt moved to tears, to please leave the room. I would go with them for support, but asked that they not cry in the mixed group. After the discussion, I spent the next hour explaining to a very outraged white woman why she was asked not to cry in the presence of the people of color.

Elizabeth Eckford and Hazel Bryan: What happened to the two girls in the most famous photo of the Civil Rights Era.
The black girl is Elizabeth Eckford of the Little Rock Nine. Moments earlier, she’d tried to enter Central High School, only to be repeatedly rebuffed by soldiers from the Arkansas National Guard placed there by Gov. Orval Faubus. A mob baying at her heels, Elizabeth is making her way, fearfully but determinately, toward what she hoped would be the relative safety of the bus stop a block away.

The face belongs to Hazel Bryan. Hazel, the daughter of a disabled war veteran, was largely apolitical, even on matters of race; while sharing the prejudices of her parents, she cared far more about dancing and dating. Being in that crowd that morning, making a ruckus, out-shouting all of her friends, was a way of getting noticed, and far more exciting than going into class. She’d thought nothing would come of what she’d done, and nothing ever would have had she not been captured in mid-epithet by Will Counts, a young photographer for the Arkansas Democrat.

If anyone in the picture, which reverberated throughout the world that day and in history books ever since, should feel aggrieved, it’s of course Elizabeth Eckford. What Counts had captured both symbolized and anticipated the ordeals that Elizabeth, a girl of unusual sensitivity and intelligence, would face in her lifetime. First came the hellish year she and other black students endured inside Central, and then decades in which the trauma from that experience, plus prejudice, poverty, family tragedy, and her own demons kept her from realizing her extraordinary potential.
