The Nestlé Controversy: 5 Scandals That Show It's Time to Boycott Nestlé
S.E. Smith— 2015-05-15 11:30 am | Last updated 2019-01-09 08:27 am
There’s a Nestlé controversy brewing up this week as the firm comes under the gun for resolutely continuing to bottle water in California despite the state’s historic drought. While Governor Jerry Brown has instituted restrictions on water use and Californians—ironically—are being forced to buy bottled water because their own wells are running dry, Nestlé is pumping a shockingly unknown amount out of California aquifers....
In California, Nestlé bottles water in desert regions of the state that are already struggling with water shortages, and it refuses to disclose how much it processes at its facilities. In Wisconsin, the firm became involved in a protracted dispute over pristine water sources, while Nestlé has also made itself extremely unpopular in Oregon. Critics also accuse Nestlé of privatizing what should be a free public resource across the United States.

Reporting on the situation in California, David Dayen at Salon notes that Nestlé gets around water usage restrictions by pumping on reservations, which are not accountable to states because of their status as sovereign lands.

Child poverty report: food, housing, and money, not work requirements, work best - Vox
That group has now, more than three years later, produced its exhaustive, 600-page report.

The report estimates that child poverty costs us $800 billion to $1.1 trillion every year due to increased crime, worsened health, and lower earnings when poor kids become adults. There is no one approach to reducing it, the committee concludes, but it did outline four separate options policymakers could pursue — two of which would cut child poverty in half in the next decade.
...
A “universal supports and work poverty reduction package,” which includes a bigger increase in the EITC than the first three packages, includes a minimum wage increase to $10.25 per hour and makes the Child Tax Credit refundable, offers various anti-poverty programs to legal immigrants who are currently barred, and, most importantly, includes a child allowance of $2,700 per year, as well as a $1,200 per year publicly funded minimum child support payment for single parents entitled to child support from their former partner (oftentimes, these partners aren’t able to regularly pay child support). This plan also cuts child poverty by half: the rate falls from 12.6 percent to 6.1 percent, lifting 4.8 million kids out of poverty. It would cost about $111.6 billion per year.

Meet the doctor curing fake news: Italian wages Twitter war against anti-vaxxers
Roald Dahl's letter about the death of his seven-year-old daughter, Olivia, from measles in 1962.

The author wrote: "I noticed that her fingers and her mind were not working together and she couldn't do anything. 'Are you feeling all right?' I asked her. 'I feel all sleepy,' she said. In an hour, she was unconscious. In twelve hours she was dead".

Dahl, who penned the letter in 1986, advocated for children to be immunised, telling parents: "What on earth are you worrying about? It really is almost a crime to allow your child to go unimmunised."

Fighting the patriarchy one grandpa at a time
To the other adults in the room this is fine.

A grown man looms behind my three-year-old daughter. Occasionally he will poke or tickle her and she responds by shrinking. Smaller and smaller with each unwanted advance. I imagine her trying to become slight enough to slip out of her booster seat and slide under the table.

When my mother views this scene, she sees playful taunting. A grandfather engaging with his granddaughter.

“Mae.” My tone cuts through the din of a familiar family gathering together. She does not look at me.

“Mae.” I start again. “You can tell him no Mae. If this isn’t okay you could say something like, Papa, please back up—I would like some space for my body.”

A Sex Offender in Church | UUA.org
In 1996 a parishioner invited a known sex offender to First Unitarian Universalist (UU) Society in Middleboro, Massachusetts, because he felt the man (let’s call him Dan) was trying hard to make a fresh start and could use the support of a church family. The minister was informed and met with Dan and welcomed him. Dan agreed to have a “buddy,” who could be with him while he was in church. The purpose of the buddy was both to assure the safety of parishioners and to protect Dan against accusations as well.

A few months later, news of Dan’s background leaked out. Many people were angry. Some parents with young children were particularly angry because they had unknowingly invited this man into their home. The minister supported Dan’s right to be in the church.

Lessons of Our Land
What is Lessons of Our Land?
Lessons of Our Land is designed to make it easy for Pre-K through Grade 12 teachers to incorporate Native American stories, lessons and games into regular classroom instruction. This interdisciplinary Indian land curriculum was designed to align with existing state standards and is adaptable to include the history and culture of a region’s Indian nations. While Lessons of Our Land positions Native American tribal issues and values at the forefront, the curriculum emphasizes the fundamental relationship between land and people in general, not just Native Americans.

Parent's Corner: The Letter Your Teenager Can't Write You — Gretchen Schmelzer
Dear Parent:

This is the letter that I wish I could write.

This fight we are in right now. I need it. I need this fight. I can’t tell you this because I don’t have the language for it and it wouldn’t make sense anyway. But I need this fight. Badly. I need to hate you right now and I need you to survive it. I need you to survive my hating you and you hating me. I need this fight even though I hate it too. It doesn’t matter what this fight is even about: curfew, homework, laundry, my messy room, going out, staying in, leaving, not leaving, boyfriend, girlfriend, no friends, bad friends. It doesn’t matter. I need to fight you on it and I need you to fight me back.

I desperately need you to hold the other end of the rope. To hang on tightly while I thrash on the other end—while I find the handholds and footholds in this new world I feel like I am in. I used to know who I was, who you were, who we were. But right now I don’t. Right now I am looking for my edges and I can sometimes only find them when I am pulling on you.

On Wednesday, September 27, 2017, Rosa-Linda Advincula and Miles Tarver welcomed their beautiful baby girl into this world.  Our hearts were filled with joy... but now they are also filled with great sadness, as Rosa did not survive the delivery, due to complications.

Rosa was a devoted partner, beloved mother, daughter, sister, friend... and so much more, to so many.  Her light shined on everyone she met, and her sudden death has left her family and friends devasted.

Our goal is now to support Miles, and their children, Baby Rosalinda, Maya, Akasha and Carmelo during this very difficult time.

We appreciate your love, support and any gifts to help with the care of Baby Rosalinda and the family's unforeseen expenses.

Harvard Rescinds Acceptances for At Least Ten Students for Obscene Memes | News | The Harvard Crimson
Harvard College rescinded admissions offers to at least ten prospective members of the Class of 2021 after the students traded sexually explicit memes and messages that sometimes targeted minority groups in a private Facebook group chat.
A handful of admitted students formed the messaging group—titled, at one point, “Harvard memes for horny bourgeois teens”—on Facebook in late December, according to two incoming freshmen.

In the group, students sent each other memes and other images mocking sexual assault, the Holocaust, and the deaths of children, according to screenshots of the chat obtained by The Crimson. Some of the messages joked that abusing children was sexually arousing, while others had punchlines directed at specific ethnic or racial groups. One called the hypothetical hanging of a Mexican child “piñata time.”

Replace the 4th Grade Mission Project
Repeal, Replace and Reframe the 4th Grade Mission project
With the recent adoption of the new History-Social Science Framework by the California State Board of Education, it is acknowledged that the story of California begins in pre-Columbian times. For this reason, it is important that we include the voices and history of California Indians.

To this end, the practice of creating models of the California missions and not including the impact and daily life of the native population within these missions has perpetuated a false narrative. As indicated by the State Board of Education, “building missions from sugar cubes or popsicle sticks does not help students understand the period and is offensive to many. ... Missions were sites of conflict, conquest, and forced labor.”

The intention of this resolution is to set in motion the replacement units so that educators in California, as well as those in our teacher education pipeline, can access the California Indian perspective that has been absent.

We need your support to help produce new standards-based curricula to reframe California’s history.

First, if you support this endeavor, sign on to the Resolution to Repeal, Replace and Reframe the 4th Grade Mission Project

82 Chibok girls are free of kidnappers but still not home - World - CBC News
On April 14, 2014, Boko Haram kidnapped 276 girls, mostly aged between 16 and 18. Since then, 57 have escaped, three were found over the course of the last year, 21 released last October and 82 released on Saturday. That leaves 113 missing.

For the latest group to be released, a transition back to normalcy will not be easy.

Many questions are being raised in Nigeria about the way in which the government is handling the released hostages.

Those released in October have not been able to return to their homes and families. Instead, they have been kept in government-run facilities in the capital Abuja, where they have taken lessons and have received counselling.

The newly released 82 have also yet to be reunited with their families. The government says it is still verifying their identities.

Long-term measles-induced immunomodulation increases overall childhood infectious disease mortality | Science
Extra dividends from measles vaccine
Vaccination against measles has many benefits, not only lifelong protection against this potentially serious virus. Mina et al. analyzed data collected since mass vaccination began in high-income countries when measles was common. Measles vaccination is associated with less mortality from other childhood infections. Measles is known to cause transient immunosuppression, but close inspection of the mortality data suggests that it disables immune memory for 2 to 3 years. Vaccination thus does more than safeguard children against measles; it also stops other infections taking advantage of measles-induced immune damage.

Science, this issue p. 694
Abstract
Immunosuppression after measles is known to predispose people to opportunistic infections for a period of several weeks to months. Using population-level data, we show that measles has a more prolonged effect on host resistance, extending over 2 to 3 years. We find that nonmeasles infectious disease mortality in high-income countries is tightly coupled to measles incidence at this lag, in both the pre- and post-vaccine eras. We conclude that long-term immunologic sequelae of measles drive interannual fluctuations in nonmeasles deaths. This is consistent with recent experimental work that attributes the immunosuppressive effects of measles to depletion of B and T lymphocytes. Our data provide an explanation for the long-term benefits of measles vaccination in preventing all-cause infectious disease. By preventing measles-associated immune memory loss, vaccination protects polymicrobial herd immunity.

Lawmakers ask FBI to help find missing girls in D.C. area | WREG.com
D.C. police officials said there has been no increase in the numbers of missing persons in their jurisdiction. “We’ve just been posting them on social media more often,” said Metropolitan Police spokeswoman Rachel Reid.

According to local police data, the number of missing child cases in the District dropped from 2,433 in 2015 to 2,242 in 2016.

The highest total recently, 2,610, was back in 2001.

But the increased social media attention has caused concern in the U.S. capital area, which has long had a large minority population and is currently about 48 percent black.

Hundreds of people packed a town-hall style meeting at a neighborhood school on Wednesday to express concern about the missing children cases.

Official Blames Lead Levels In Oakland’s Fruitvale On Paint « CBS San Francisco
Larry Brooks with Alameda County’s lead prevention program said they should not.

“No. In Flint, the problem was the water system,” explained Brooks. “In Alameda County, no.”

Brooks said the problem issue is the lead paint used on homes prior to 1978.

“Deteriorated lead-based paint can be found throughout Oakland,” said Brooks. “Most of the homes built in Oakland were built prior to 1980; 90 percent.”

The county’s “Healthy Homes” department educates the public and provides grants to qualifying low-income residents to upgrade homes.

But Brooks believes it’s not just a Fruitvale problem. It is far more widespread.

“Over the last ten years, we’ve treated over 5,000 children for lead poisoning in the county,” said Brooks. “It is still a clear and present danger for children living in aging homes.”

As education on lead poisoning increases, he says so will screening. Health officials might find even more children with elevated level of lead in their blood.

“There is no safe level,” said Brooks. “My goal would be zero percent.”

Alameda County officials say they have over $3 million to help low-income homeowners deal with lead in their home.

Hillary Clinton Interview - Marley Dias Interviews Hillary Clinton
When I was really little, I wanted to be our first woman president. I always knew I want to be the kind of grownup who makes people's lives better. And since that's pretty much the job of the President of the United States, it seemed like a good idea.

But I've realized that you don't have to be very old to start trying to fix the problems you see in the world around you. (I'm 11.) That's why I created #1000BlackGirlBooks, a book drive to collect stories about young black girls. I wanted to be represented in books and show people that it's possible to create spaces to be seen and represented.

Hillary Clinton is someone who's never waited around for someone else to do the hard work. She's been an organizer and a change-maker for her whole life practically. But people don't really talk a lot about what she did when she was a kid like me. It turns out she's always been an activist. She's always wanted to make a difference.

I know, because I asked her! I emailed Hillary Clinton to find out what she was like when she was in middle school, why she loves her favorite books, and what happened when she got one really bad haircut. (I once cut off a big piece of my ponytail, so I know what it's like.)

She has shaped the way I think about my future, because so many of the qualities she has now are ones that I want to have when I get older. It makes me so excited that she could become our first woman president. If someone had to do it before I could, I'm happy that it will be her. It's really no problem.

Female molester facing strict release conditions | News | Calgary Sun
The board said one of those breaches related to a long-term relationship with an incarcerated male sex offender that Harks had been in for more than a year without disclosing it to her parole officer.
In the second breach, the parole board said Harks chartered a plane and a taxi to go to a residence in another province to obtain money for the man, who she was engaged to.
“Your actions were discovered because you did not pay the charter pilot, who contacted the police,” the documents indicate.
At the time of Harks’ offence in 2007, she was on probation following two convictions of sexual assault against two children aged four and five years old.
“You have also admitted to having approximately 60 victims and you estimate having committed 200 offences, with some of those offences being multiple offences against some of your victims,” the parole board stated.
The board noted that in April 2006, Harks was identified in a dangerous offender psychiatric assessment as having an “all encompassing preoccupation with interest in sexually abusing young girls.”
The documents indicate Harks could also be facing charges for three alleged offences that took place recently while she was in custody: assault, unlawful confinement and sexual assault.
Harks is also subject to conditions imposed by the court in March 2014 that prohibit her from attending facilities including daycare centres, school grounds or playgrounds.
She is also banned from using a computer system for the purpose of communicating with a person under the age of 14.
Harks has undergone gender reassignment, and legally changed her name sometime between April 2010 and August 2012.

Alameda County Sheriff's deputy linked to Celeste Guap is fired - EastBayTimes.com
ALAMEDA COUNTY -- The Alameda County Sheriff's Office on Friday fired a deputy linked to a sexually exploited teenager and who was charged with several misdemeanors for violating a restraining order filed by his wife.

Deputy Travis Brannon, who has been on leave, was terminated Friday, Sgt. Ray Kelly said.

"He is no longer employed by the sheriff's office. We cannot comment any further regarding personnel matters," Kelly said.

Brannon was charged with 18 misdemeanor counts for disobeying and violating a restraining order filed by his wife, who said she feared for her life after the deputy threatened her.

The Alameda County Sheriff's Office on Friday, August 26, fired Deputy Travis Brannon, who is linked to a sexually exploited teenger and who was charged with several misdemeanors for violating a restraining order filed by his wife. (David DeBolt)
According to court papers and police reports, Brannon allegedly told her he had connections to the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club and would "have her killed and fed to pigs if she ever did or said anything to hurt his job as a deputy."

The order was filed Oct. 20 and Brannon immediately and repeatedly violated it by contacting the woman, even from his Oakland jail cell following his arrest, court records show.

He and his wife were each arrested for domestic violence in August 2015, according to police records.

A call on Friday to his attorney, Joseph Cox, was not returned.

Earlier this month, Sgt. J.D. Nelson said Brannon was on leave when the Sheriff's office learned of his association with the young woman who goes by the name Celeste Guap. Guap, the daughter of an Oakland police dispatcher, has said that she had sex with about 30 police officers, including four Alameda County Sheriff's deputies. She has not publicly named Brannon as one of the officers.

Some of the encounters with Oakland officers and a Contra Costa sheriff's deputy happened before she turned 18. Multiple investigations of police officers are continuing. The Alameda County Sheriff's Office completed its own investigation; none of the four deputies were placed on leave.

Brannon's last assignment was on patrol out of the Eden Township station in San Leandro, Nelson said. He formerly worked as a resource officer at Castro Valley High School.

Investigation links Oakland police officers to alleged sexual misconduct with underage girl | KRON4.com
On Wednesday, Oakland police issued another statement to KRON.

The Oakland Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division initiated an internal investigation regarding allegations of sexual misconduct involving Oakland police officers.

As the result of the ongoing investigation, three Oakland police officers have been placed on paid administrative leave.

As a public safety agency charged with protecting our community along with upholding and enforcing the law, the Oakland Police Department takes all allegations of misconduct involving our employees seriously. Ensuring internal investigations are swift, fair, and objective is our priority.

The Oakland Police Department will not tolerate misconduct of any kind from its employees. The Oakland Police Department holds all employees accountable for their actions on and off duty.

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

OAKLAND (KRON) — KRON4 News has uncovered alleged sexual misconduct involving an underage girl and Oakland police officers.

Two Oakland police officers have been placed on administrative leave, and as many four additional officers may also be involved, in what multiple sources tell KRON is an investigation into alleged sexual misconduct involving a minor.

Sources say the alleged sexual misconduct involves the daughter of a civilian employee who works with the police department. The investigation reportedly dates back to October 2015.

KRON went to the Oakland Police Department headquarters to speak to OPD Chief Sean Whent about this case but instead got this written response:

“As a matter of policy, the Oakland Police Department does not comment on active internal affairs investigations. The Oakland Police Department takes all allegations of misconduct of our employees very seriously, ensuring internal investigations are swift, fair, and objective is our policy.”
No one at OPD headquarters would talk on camera.

“If there is any truth to the allegation, it is completely disturbing and alarming,” Oakland City Councilmember Noel Gallo said.

Gallo said he is troubled with the police department’s lack of transparency.

People are getting shot by toddlers on a weekly basis this year - The Washington Post
This week a 2-year-old in South Carolina found a gun in the back seat of the car he was riding in and accidentally shot his grandmother, who was sitting in the passenger seat. This type of thing happens from time to time: a little kid finds a gun, fires it, and hurts or kills himself or someone else. These cases rarely bubble up to the national level except when someone, like a parent, ends up dead.

But cases like this happen a lot more frequently than you might think. After spending a few hours sifting through news reports, I've found at least 43 instances this year of somebody being shot by a toddler 3 or younger. In 31 of those 43 cases, a toddler found a gun and shot himself or herself.

The Police Told Her To Report Her Rape, Then Arrested Her For Lying
“They Told Me It Never Happened”
What’s at stake when police arrest women who they believe falsely reported rape? For Lara McLeod, it was her reputation, her mental health, and maybe even her baby nephew’s life.

Lara McLeod never wanted to report her rape. In those first few hours, the 19-year-old was barely able to put what had happened to her into words. Joaquin Rams, Lara’s older sister’s fiancé, had forced Lara to have sex with him, she said — just two weeks after Lara’s sister, Hera, had given birth to Joaquin’s baby.
Joaquin warned Lara not to tell anyone, she said, because it would ruin her family’s life. Lara feared that was true, but she broke down and told her parents the next day. They rushed out the door in a panic to pick up Hera and the baby. All Lara wanted to do after that was go back to sleep.
Instead, later that evening, she got a call from a police officer in Prince William County, Virginia, the suburb of Washington, D.C., where Joaquin and Hera lived. He wanted to know whether what Lara had told her parents was true. When Lara said it was, the officer told her that she needed to come to the station immediately for a formal interview.
After a cursory investigation of the claim they compelled her to file, the police abruptly concluded Lara was lying about being raped and arrested her. Hera was charged with obstructing justice for aiding Lara’s alleged deceit, and had to spend her savings on legal fees to get them dismissed. Lara’s charges were eventually expunged, but not before her reputation was destroyed. She says she still has severe panic attacks whenever she sees a police officer.

(Content Warnings: incest, rape, and sexual violence)

Two of my good friends had their first baby late this past year.

From the get-go, Baby was a cuddly little girl. (Or, as her two moms say, “We assume she’s a girl, but we won’t know for sure until she tells us herself.”) She was all about being held and being rocked – and crying her head off the moment anybody dared to put her down. She wanted contact with all the people ever.

But in the past couple of months, it seems she’s had a serious change of heart.

When some of us were over for a visit, Baby suddenly wanted none of it. Passed from one person to the next, she wailed like a banshee until finally given back to one of her moms, where she instantly quieted.

“Don’t take it personally,” Mama said to everyone, bouncing Baby. “She’s just entering that stage where she’s developing some healthy stranger danger.”

And so the new process emerged: One of us would attempt to hold Baby every once in a while. And if she cried for more than 20 seconds, we’d hand her back to one of her moms.

If Baby didn’t want to be held by certain people, Baby didn’t have to be held by certain people.

"Stranger Danger" to children vastly overstated - Boing Boing
Of nonfamily abductions, just 115 children (90 reported) in 1999 were estimated to fit a stereotypical kidnapping by a stranger or slight acquaintance. Forty of those were killed. That's 1 child out of every 750,000 kidnapped, and 1 out of about every 2 million killed.

Of all children reported missing (whether the estimate or based on reports), 99.8% were returned home or located; the remaining number were virtually all runaways.

"Stranger Danger" to children vastly overstated - Boing Boing
As a parent of two young children, it's my job to keep them healthy, safe, and happy. But I'm not at all worried they're going to be snatched off the street. Why? Because oft-spread claims that that 800,000 children are reported missing each year—with 300,000 children estimated to be sexually trafficked—are outdated or simply wrong.

Hitting kids: A hard habit to break  - NY Daily News
They’d never felt the consequences of misbehavior? “That’s why they actin’ up.”

There are historical and cultural reasons for that belief. During slavery and in the Jim Crow South, if your child didn’t listen to your instructions, that child might be killed. Behaving correctly was a matter of life and death.

My Son Wears Dresses, and That's OK With Me | Seth Menachem
We went to the party, and, as I figured, some of the Israelis laughed and made comments. One said to me, "Do you think this is funny? There are kids here. You want them to see this?" Another said, "You want him to be gay?"

And I stayed calm. And I explained to them the best I could that there is no correlation between kids cross-dressing and being gay. And if he is gay, it's not because of anything I did. It's because he's gay. And maybe it's a stage. And maybe it's not. But either way, I don't want him to ever feel like he wasn't able to express himself because his parents didn't support him. And some understood. And some, trapped by religion or ignorance, gave us the stank face.

Plenty of people are supportive. They'll see my kids -- Sydney with her long dirty blonde hair, and Asher with his short dark hair, and say, "I love your daughter's pixie cut." When I tell them he's my son, they smile and say, "I love it." They also apologize for confusing his gender, but I tell them, "Don't apologize. He's in a purple dress with sparkly shoes. How would you know?" I know there are parents who get worked up when you confuse their kids' gender -- but I'm not one of them.

Debi Jackson, Mother Of Transgender Child, Gives Moving Speech
"My daughter is six years old. She transitioned, which means she changed her outward appearance from male to female and started living full time as her true gender, when she was four. Until that point she was quite a rough and tumble little boy with a buzz cut and a shark tooth necklace."

And so begins the absolutely beautiful speech Debi Jackson gave earlier this year about her transgender daughter, AJ, at the Unity Temple on the Plaza in Kansas City. As Jackson continues, she outlines how her family came to realize that AJ is transgender, what happened the first day she went to school "in girl clothes" and the bigotry her family faced.

But the best part of the video may be when Jackson addresses the comments she's heard about her daughter and sets the record straight about statements like you "wanted a girl so you turned your child into one" and "kids have no idea what they want or who they are -- my kids wants to be a dog, should I let him?"

Response to Elizabeth Waters
We have better things to do with out time then worry about Goldin's lies

Any lies on the site are Marion's and Lisa's. I present Marion's and Lisa's testimonies, given under oath, verbatim. I also give my interpretations. People are free to devise their own interpretations. Note: For those who don't know, Lisa Waters earns a significant part of her income from administering Marion's estate. If too many people learn the truth about Marion, Lisa's meal ticket may suffer. Unlike Lisa, I have no incentive to lie.

We suspect that by putting her name on a site and filling it with the most disgusting contents he can come up with, he's hoping that we'll offer him a lot of money for the rights to the domain name, so we feel out best course is to ignore him.

I agree that what Marion and Lisa say about themselves, in their own words given under oath, is pretty disgusting. As for the domain name, Mary and I wanted to make sure that Marion's readers could find the site and learn the truth. Frankly, I don't believe the estate has enough money to tempt us to sell the domain name.

Marion Zimmer Bradley married Walter Breen on 6/3/1964. They had two children, but sometime in the late 60s Walter was ill and became impotent (at least as far as Marion knew). They separated in 1979.

I can certainly believe Walter, a man who preferred sex with young children, was impotent with Marion. That doesn't mean he was harmless. Marion's and Walter's separation was not a legal one, and Marion continued to house and support him until he was imprisoned after he was convicted of molesting yet another child after Ken.

In or about March of 1989, Walter allegedly molested a 12-year-old boy

Not "allegedly." Walter admitted and was convicted for molestation in a court of law. Actually, Ken was 8 years old when Walter began molesting him, and Ken was 11 when Walter was finally arrested for it. This was not a one-time thing.

Marion Zimmer Bradley: It’s Worse Than I Knew
It is a lot worse than that.

The first time she molested me, I was three. The last time, I was twelve, and able to walk away.

I put Walter in jail for molesting one boy. I had tried to intervene when I was 13 by telling Mother and Lisa, and they just moved him into his own apartment.

I had been living partially on couches since I was ten years old because of the out of control drugs, orgies, and constant flow of people in and out of our family “home.”

None of this should be news. Walter was a serial rapist with many, many, many victims (I named 22 to the cops) but Marion was far, far worse. She was cruel and violent, as well as completely out of her mind sexually. I am not her only victim, nor were her only victims girls.

I wish I had better news.

Moira Greyland.

Followed up with:

It should also be noted that Walter was convicted on 13 counts of PC 288 A, B, C, and D.

Oral sex was the least of anyone’s worries.

Of Aisha’s age at marriage - DAWN.COM
Historian Ibn Ishaq in his Sirat Rasul Allah has given a list of the people who accepted Islam in the first year of the proclamation of Islam, in which Hazrat Aisha’s name is mentioned as Abu Bakr’s “little daughter Aisha”. If we accept Hisham’s calculations, she was not even born at that time.

Some time after the death of the Prophet’s first wife, Hazrat Khadija, Khawla suggested to the Prophet that he get married again, to a bikrun, referring to Hazrat Aisha (Musnad Ahmed). In Arabic bikrun is used for an unmarried girl who has crossed the age of puberty and is of marriageable age. The word cannot be used for a six-year-old girl.

Playing with Barbie dolls could limit girls’ career choices, study shows | News & Research Communications | Oregon State University
Girls ages 4 to 7 were randomly assigned to play with one of three dolls: a fashion Barbie with dress and high-heeled shoes; a career Barbie with a doctor’s coat and stethoscope; or a Mrs. Potato Head with accessories such as purses and shoes. Mrs. Potato Head was selected as a neutral doll because the toy is similar in color and texture, but doesn’t have the sexualized characteristics of Barbie.

After a few minutes of play, the girls were asked if they could do any of 10 occupations when they grew up. They were also asked if boys could do those jobs. Half of the careers were traditionally male-dominated and half were female-dominated.

Girls who played with Barbie thought they could do fewer jobs than boys could do. But girls who played with Mrs. Potato Head reported nearly the same number of possible careers for themselves and for boys.

There was no difference in results between girls who played with a Barbie wearing a dress and the career-focused, doctor version of the doll.

ECHIDNE OF THE SNAKES: Where Our Rationality Fails: Parenting Worries
This piece about the dangers of leaving a child unattended in a locked car for a few minutes (when it is not hot)  reminded me of an earlier similar story about a pediatrician who ran into the store to get some milk and left her children in the locked car, also for a few minutes.  She was accused of child abuse, if I recall the story correctly (can't find the link now).

Yet the actual risk of anything bad happening to children being left alone for a few minutes in a locked car is very, very low
