Cherokee Nation Sends First Delegate to Congress
Teehee’s nomination is not happening in a vacuum, and it raises a fundamental question about how Indigenous communities engage with electoral politics and participation within a colonial system that is actively determined to ensure their erasure and elimination. On the one hand, sending a delegate to Congress means acknowledging the political structure imposed by the United States and actively taking part in it. On the other hand, a delegate can bring forward real changes not just by proposing legislation, but also by reframing legislative agendas to better serve Indigenous people.

This appointment is also deeply complicated by the current business dealings between the Cherokee Nation and the U.S. federal government. Part of the reason the tribe has been able to bolster its economic position is because of defense contracts it has made with the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force. Cherokee Nation Businesses, in particular its Red Wing division, has significant investments in military armaments, guidance systems and surveillance technologies — all of which directly support ongoing colonial governance domestically and imperialist projects abroad.

US 'now a full-fledged banana republic' after revelations over Mitch McConnell wife's $78m grants | The Independent
Donald Trump's transport secretary designated a special liaison to help with grant applications from her senator husband’s state, paving the way to fund projects worth $78m (£62m), it has been reported.

Elaine Chao personally asked a Department of Transportation aide to serve as an intermediary and advisor to Republican Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell and his Kentucky state officials, according to emails seen by Politico.

The projects funded – as Mr McConnell prepared to campaign for re-election – reportedly included road improvements in Republican political strongholds for which grant applications had previously been rejected.

Walter Shaub, a former director of the US Office of Government Ethics, described the arrangement as “the sort of thing that should lead to the impeachment" of an official.

“We are now a full-fledged banana republic,” the vocal Trump critic added.

The revolutionary strategy hidden in Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Instagram feed - The Washington Post
These social media posts aren’t just about female friendship; they’re also about the behind-the-scenes strategies women in mostly male workplaces have always employed to get stuff done.

Female White House staffers in the Obama administration, for example, popularized a meeting strategy they’d dubbed “amplification.” Tired of men ignoring their ideas — or worse, claiming them as their own — they decided to reiterate the good ideas voiced by other women in the room and made sure the female creator received proper credit.

Inside the centrist scam behind the "challenge" to Nancy Pelosi as Speaker - Palmer Report
I try not to take sides whenever there are two or more equally qualified Democratic candidates in the mix for something. For instance, quite a number of well qualified Democrats are about to announce their intention to run for President in 2020, and I think they should all be heard. But when it comes to this sudden “debate” about whether Nancy Pelosi should be Speaker of the House, we’re looking at something fundamentally different – and I can prove it.

Quick, who is Nancy Pelosi’s main opponent for Speaker? Oh right, there isn’t one. That’s because there is no competition going on here, no challenger, no organic sentiment that Pelosi needs to be ousted. Instead what we’re seeing is five centrist Democrats frantically trying to trick the left wing of the party into turning against Pelosi for no good reason, and in favor of no particular alternative. Why?

These five House Democrat centrists are led by Seth Moulton – who has alternately described himself as a “progressive” and a “moderate,” thus proving that the word “progressive” has lost all of its meaning – and Tim Ryan, who is far enough to the right that he tried to restrict federal funding for abortion a few years ago before reversing his position

Do the Dems Need Nancy Pelosi? – Talking Points Memo
There’s a separate matter. Somewhat like Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi has been so consistently vilified and caricatured by national Republicans that she has become, objectively, a highly charged figure as the face of national Democrats. We can lament that, think it’s the product of things that are vicious and unfair. I do. But that doesn’t make it not true.

At the same time, there are very few people who understand the inner workings of the House, what caucus leaders do and what she managed to get done between 2007 and 2011 who don’t think she’s a legislative leader of extraordinary ability. She also has critical support from a broad array of the parties different factions, in and out of Congress. As important as anything, Pelosi is tough, something particularly important facing Donald Trump for the next two years.

Will Nancy Pelosi Be Speaker in 2019? Democratic Insurgents Vow for Replacement – Rolling Stone
Instead, under Pelosi’s leadership, Democrats won a resounding victory in the House, gaining as many as 40 seats — stomping Republicans in traditional strongholds like Orange County, California, while picking up seats in formerly red corners of South Carolina, Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma. More broadly, Democrats picked up at least seven governorships, fought the Senate contest to a near draw and picked up hundreds of state legislative seats.

In Rolling Stone’s last conversation with Moulton, he did offer Pelosi a back-handed compliment: “I have great respect for everything Pelosi has accomplished in her long and storied career. She’ll go down in history as the first woman to be Speaker of the House. What an unbelievable achievement,” he said. “But for her to suggest that she’s the only person who can do this? I think that’s pretty arrogant.”

Gunman who shot congressman had history of anti-GOP activity
In April 2006, Hodgkinson was charged with misdemeanor battery after he stormed into a neighbor's house in an attempt to force home a teenage girl who, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, was under guardianship of Hodgkinson and his wife.

Witnesses told deputies that Hodgkinson burst into the home and told his daughter "to get your stuff. It's time to come home," the report said. The daughter refused and locked herself in a bedroom before Hodgkinson again forced his way in and "became violent," grabbing her by her hair and throwing her on the floor, according to the report.

The confrontation spilled outside as the daughter and a friend tried to flee in a car. Hodgkinson used a pocket knife to cut the friend's seat belt and punched that woman in the face.

The teenager's mother entered the fray, hitting her daughter, pulling her hair to get her out of the car and threatening to put her back into foster care, the report said.

After Hodgkinson retreated to his home, he was confronted by the boyfriend of the woman he punched. According to the report, Hodgkinson struck that man in the head with the wooden stock of a 12-gauge shotgun before firing off a round as that man fled.

A judge later returned the teen to the custody of Illinois welfare officials and awarded guardianship to the Hodgkinsons' neighbor, the Post-Dispatch reported. Battery charges against Hodgkinson and his wife were later dismissed.

This is the best explanation of gerrymandering you will ever see - The Washington Post
Gerrymandering -- drawing political boundaries to give your party a numeric advantage over an opposing party -- is a difficult process to explain. If you find the notion confusing, check out the chart above --  adapted from one posted to Reddit this weekend -- and wonder no more.

Suppose we have a very tiny state of fifty people. Thirty of them belong to the Blue Party, and 20 belong to the Red Party. And just our luck, they all live in a nice even grid with the Blues on one side of the state and the Reds on the other.

Now, let's say we need to divide this state into five districts. Each district will send one representative to the House to represent the people. Ideally, we want the representation to be proportional: if 60 percent of our residents are Blue and 40 percent are Red, those five seats should be divvied up the same way.

Fortunately, because our citizens live in a neatly ordered grid, it's easy to draw five lengthy districts  -- two for the Reds , and three for the Blues. Voila! Perfectly proportional representation, just as the Founders intended. That's grid 1 above, "perfect representation."

Now, let's say instead that the Blue Party controls the state government, and they get to decide how the lines are drawn. Rather than draw districts vertically they draw them horizontally, so that in each district there are six Blues and four Reds. You can see that in grid 2 above, "compact but unfair."

Daily Kos: Elizabeth Warren Acts Decisively As She Lashes Out At Congress - Do your Job (VIDEO)
Elizabeth Warren said banks are 30% larger than they were just five years ago. She said five banks own more than half the total banking assets of the country. The10 biggest banks in effect get a taxpayer subsidy of over $83 Billion.

Elizabeth Warren scoffed at those who want to wait for all regulations to be written. She excoriates Congress for not acting and using the failure of regulators missing deadlines as a pretext. She said oversight is the responsibility of Congress. Had they done their jobs in 2008, the financial collapse could have been avoided.

Elizabeth Warren said that while the Consumer Agency has met every statutory deadline, the other regulators have not. That does not provide any degree of confidence. She said the last thing that should be done is to wait for another crisis, another London Whale, or another Libor disgrace, or another robo-signing scandal before Congress takes action.

Elizabeth Warren then stated that she is taking action. She has partnered with Senators John McCain, Maria Cantwell, and Angus King to create the 21st Century Glass Steagall Act.

Jennifer Hoelzer's Insider's View Of The Administration's Response To NSA Surveillance Leaks | Techdirt
"What makes us different from other countries is not simply our ability to secure our nation," Obama said. "It's the way we do it, with open debate and democratic process."
I hope you won't mind if I take a moment to respond to that.

Really, Mr. President? Do you really expect me to believe that you give a damn about open debate and the democratic process? Because it seems to me if your Administration was really committed those things, your Administration wouldn't have blocked every effort to have an open debate on these issues each time the laws that your Administration claims authorizes these programs came up for reauthorization, which -- correct me if I am wrong -- is when the democratic process recommends as the ideal time for these debates.

For example, in June 2009, six months before Congress would have to vote to reauthorize Section 215 of the Patriot Act, which the Obama Administration claims gives the NSA the authority to collect records on basically every American citizen -- whether they have ever or will ever come in contact with a terrorist -- Senators Wyden, Feingold and Durbin sent Attorney General Eric Holder a classified letter "requesting the declassification of information which [they] argued was critical for a productive debate on reauthorization of the USA PATRIOT Act."

In November 2009, they sent an unclassified letter reiterating the request, stating:
"The PATRIOT Act was passed in a rush after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Sunsets were attached to the Act's most controversial provisions, to permit better-informed, more deliberative consideration of them at a later time. Now is the time for that deliberative consideration, but informed discussion is not possible when most members of Congress - and nearly all of the American public - lack important information about the issue."
Did President Obama jump at the opportunity to embrace the democratic process and have an open debate then? No. Congress voted the following month to reauthorize the Patriot Act without debate.

How to deal with a mansplainer starring Hillary Clinton in gifs
Sometimes you don’t realize how #bawse somebody is, until you make it into a gif.

So after Secretary of State Hillary Clinton smacked down the Senate and the House yesterday, it occurred to me that what made it magical is that it is an instructional video on how to deal with a mansplainer. And of course, any good tutorial needs to be broken down into gifs for emphasis.

Ladies and gentlemen, “How to deal with a mansplainer starring Hillary Clinton.”

Step 1: Raise your hands up like, “Whoa you guys you can’t be serious.”

Step 2: Make sure to emphasize your points by counting with your hands so that simple tea party Senator mansplainer understands.  Mansplainers like visuals.

Step 3: No, seriously. Fuck this guy.

Step 4: Raise your hands up like, “What’s your point?” and clown the mansplainer for not having an actual relevant point.

Step 5: When Senator John McCain calls you combative and proceeds to rant endlessly, nod with a sly smile.

Step 6: Take the time McCain spends ranting to reorganize the pages in your binder.

Step 7: Rearrange all of the random crap on your desk.  You can never be too organized when getting grilled by angry white dudes.

Step 8: When the rant continues on and on look at the mansplainer with a *blank stare* and put your hand on your chin like, “Are you still talking?”

Step 9: Go home and do this.
