Colt Suspends Production Of AR-15 Rifles For Consumers
The Topline: Gun maker Colt announced Thursday that it will stop producing rifles for the consumer market due to weak demand but the move comes as scrutiny mounts over its popular AR-15 gun and its use in several mass shooting incidents.

Colt insisted the move was due to fluctuations in the U.S. gun market despite the national debate about gun control saying in a statement that the company was still “committed to the Second Amendment.”
The West Hartford, Connecticut-based company said it will still produce rifles for the police and military contracts and will sell handguns in the consumer market.
The Colt's AR-15 was the first semiautomatic version of the M-16 assault rifle sold to civilians and after Colt's patents expired the term AR-15 became a generic descriptor for other similar rifles sold by other gun makers.
AR-15 style rifles were used in Parkland, Florida, Pulse Nightclub and the Sandy Hook mass shootings.
Adam Winkler, a gun policy expert, told the Associated Press that with the decision was probably linked to internal company issues; Colt filed for bankruptcy protection in 2015, blaming excessive debt and the loss of military contracts.

Sometimes other white folks ask me the best way to be less of a Clueless White Person without demanding people of color expend effort teaching them, and I have a suggestion that will absolutely work. You won't wanna do it, but I'm going to tell you anyway.

Step 1) Follow at least 50 more people of color on social media ASAP.

Step 2) Read their posts, and don't reply to them unless they're addressed to you by name or they've addressed a non-rhetorical question to the general public. Not sure if it's rhetorical? Don't answer.

Step 3) Make this a habit, over a period of years.

Adapted cold shower as a potential treatment for depression. - PubMed - NCBI
Exposure to cold is known to activate the sympathetic nervous system and increase the blood level of beta-endorphin and noradrenaline and to increase synaptic release of noradrenaline in the brain as well. Additionally, due to the high density of cold receptors in the skin, a cold shower is expected to send an overwhelming amount of electrical impulses from peripheral nerve endings to the brain, which could result in an anti-depressive effect.

Schaaf’s “Safe Parking” Site Had Intended Consequences | Hyphenated-Republic
2019-07-13_13-25-53-e1564708276546.pngWhen Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf and her City Administrators unveiled the city-run “Safe Parking” site in late June, Schaaf and her administrators made it clear to the invited coterie of corporate news reporters that the city would soon ban overnight parking in the adjacent 85th/Edes corridor. Though warned well ahead of time, no reporter from any local print or broadcast media was on alert for the coming eviction. You can consider this reporter an original source for that data, because I was the sole journalist who reported the arrival of courtesy towing stickers three weeks later on July 11. The square orange stickers the size of a magazine festooned nearly every vehicle along the corridor, warning current inhabitants that they had 72 hours to vacate the area, or be subject to citation and tow.

Dozens of vehicles that had found safe harbor on the corridor for years now had to flee to other parts unknown, and with many adjoining corridors already blocked from overnight parking, this meant they would have to migrate to already congested areas in East Oakland’s poorest neighborhoods. And that was the good news. Many of the corridor’s inhabitants lived in non-functioning vehicles—unregisterable beaters they’d bought for pennies to strictly live in, or vehicles that had once been sound and had broken down over time.

Can police data predict how ‘bad apple’ officers influence their fellow cops? New study says yes. - Chicago Tribune
For years, researchers and police officials across the country have mined data such as arrest and shooting records to examine how criminals influence each other’s behavior — and in the process try to predict who might be the next gunman or victim.

A study to be released Thursday takes the same approach but looks at whether data on police themselves can help determine if officers with complaints of using excessive force can influence a colleague’s chances of being accused of similar conduct.

The answer is yes, said the study’s co-author, Andrew Papachristos, a Northwestern University sociologist who has done extensive work on studying networks of gun offenders, including in Chicago.

Mayors in Alameda County want shuttered jail converted into homeless shelter -
The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office closed Glenn E. Dyer Jail last month as a cost-cutting measure amid declining inmate populations and rising incarceration costs.

The mayors from 14 cities proposed the jail conversion this week at a meeting with the Alameda County Board of Supervisors, where they asked for more support from the county in dealing with the homeless crisis. The number of shelter beds available is not enough, they said.

“This is an incredible opportunity because it’s this huge piece of land in little downtown Oakland with multiple buildings that could be redeveloped,” said Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arreguín. “I do think given the severity of the crisis, we do have to think outside the box. We’ve seen a significant increase in unsheltered homelessness. We need more space for shelter. We need more expanded mental health services.”

Oakland Is Slowly Solving America's Rising Gun Violence Trend | HuffPost
As major cities throughout the United States have struggled to deal with rising gun violence over the years, one community in California is seeing a reversal of the trend in its own backyard.

Oakland has cut its annual homicides and nonfatal shootings by nearly half since 2012, a huge drop for what used to be considered one of the more violent cities in the U.S., according to a new report by the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.

Help us tell more of the stories that matter from voices that too often remain unheard.

The reduction is no random miracle but rather an overwhelming effort made by the entire Oakland community to address some of America’s daily gun violence in a city whose communities of color also deal with intergenerational poverty, housing segregation and systemic racial oppression.

Prison Culture » A Love Letter to the #NoCopAcademy Organizers from Those of Us on the Freedom side…
Here’s what I know… Rahm and his cronies were hoping to ram through a proposal for a $95 million police “training” academy under the cover of darkness with no community input. A group made up mostly of young Black and brown people decided that this was wrong for a number of reasons. You then spent the better part of 18 months SHOWING people in Chicago and beyond through your actions that the power structure in the city would be in for a titanic fight to resist their plans. How did you do this? You researched their plans and proposals, you learned about zoning laws on the fly, you litigated when you were excluded from public meetings, you mobilized thousands, you engaged in political education, you developed the leadership of hundreds of new young organizers, you truly centered the ideas of young people of color, you conducted participatory action research, and you SHUT SHIT DOWN. Through your actions, people quite literally the world over expressed their solidarity with your fight. They saw themselves as directly implicated in the vision of the world you have so beautifully inhabited all these months. All of these are wins.

Oakland calls Tuff Sheds a success; first village removed as lease ends - Story | KTVU
OAKLAND, Calif. (KTVU) - Oakland's first 'Tuff Shed' camp is gone. The city's year-long lease with a private developer at 6th and Brush streets in West Oakland ended this month and the city took away the 20 sheds that could temporarily house 40 homeless people at a time.

"We always planned on having a short lease. We moved the left over cabins to storage and they will be used when a new site opens soon," said Joe Devries, Oakland's homeless coordinator

The city says the success rate here was extraordinary.

"The net impact we had on unsheltered residents on our streets was positive. That is why we are continuing to expand it," said Devries.

The success rate at the three remaining Tuff Shed camps is lower at 68 percent. Two more shed camps are expected to open in the next few months.

"This isn't housing. This is emergency shelter in a non-traditional way. And it worked," said Devries.

Anxiety has a way of sending your brain into complete overdrive.

The mental health condition, which affects an estimated 40 million American adults, is notorious for causing excessive rumination and intense worry. It’s common for those living with the issue to think about a mistake and believe they’re worthless or a failure, for example. Or sometimes, a feeling of panic comes up for no reason at all. (And this is all in addition to the physical symptoms, like stomach pains and headaches. Fun!)

Kate Allan, author of the book You Can Do All Things and Tumblr user The Latest Kate, created drawings that are perfect for those days when your anxiety is debilitating to the point where you feel you’re just not good enough. The messages may be just the reminders you need when your brain is stuck in a loop of nasty, negative thoughts that aren’t even true.

The Democratic majority’s first order of business: Restore democracy - The Washington Post
The election not only was a resounding verdict against Republicans’ assault on Americans’ health care and wages, but it also was a vote to rescue our broken democracy.

In the face of a torrent of special-interest dark money, partisan gerrymandering and devious vote-suppression schemes, voters elected a House Democratic majority determined to bring real change to restore our democracy.

During the campaign, Democrats declared unequivocally that we would clean up corruption to make Washington work for the people. We pledged to reduce the role of money in politics, to restore ethics and integrity to government, and to strengthen voting laws.

We now have our marching orders. The new Democratic House is ready to deliver with H.R. 1: a bold reform package to restore the promise of our democracy — a government of, by and for the people.

Study: Oakland's Ceasefire Program Curbs Shootings, Homicides
Violent crime is down overall in Oakland. Between 2011 and 2017, shootings with victims went from 710 to 340, a 52 percent drop.

Dr. Anthony A. Braga of Northeastern University and a team of researchers, however, compared areas of Oakland where Ceasefire was used and neighborhoods where it was not. The study, “Oakland Ceasefire Impact Evaluation,” also took into account population trends in Oakland and crime data in other California cities.

Among the key findings: Ceasefire is credited with a 31.5 percent drop in homicides involving a gun since it began in 2013. Shootings involving both gang members and non-gang members significantly decreased, but the decline was steeper among gang members. For example, Braga said the number of gang shootings in the two years before Ceasefire compared to four years after it was implemented dipped 43 percent. Non-gang member shootings were down 23 percent over the same period.

Of 12 cities throughout the state examined, the study authors said only two other cities, San Francisco and Stockton, experienced such significant reductions between 2010 and 2017. Richmond, East Palo Alto, Fresno, Sacramento and Long Beach were among the other cities.

Oakland’s new transitional housing aims to put ‘visual dent in homelessness’ - SFGate
The three-story, century-old property is expected to house 90 people for four- to six-month stays. It is an extension of downtown Oakland’s Henry Robinson rapid rehousing center, which is at maximum capacity and considered a “low barrier” way of getting individuals off the street.

The city contractor that operates the center, Bay Area Community Services, will also run the new building, formerly known as the West Grand Hotel.

“We’re a harm-reduction model, so basically people can come in with an active substance-use issue, and we don’t turn them away,” said Jamie Almanza, executive director of the organization. “They can bring in their pets. They can bring in all their belongings.”

The existing downtown center places 88 percent of residents into permanent housing within six months of their moving in, according to the city.

Homeless people deemed to be the most in need — the elderly or those with chronic or mental health conditions — will get priority to move into the West Grand Avenue building. They will receive one hot meal a day and access to case workers who can help them get housing, government benefits, addiction treatment and legal documents, such as ID cards.

“The design of the model will actually put a real, noticeable, visual dent in homelessness because of the sheer volume of people it will be able to serve in a way that gets people permanent housing. It’s not a model where people stay and then return to homelessness, which many models unfortunately do,” Almanza said. “They don’t leave here until they find homes.”

The building, on West Grand Avenue between Martin Luther King Jr. Way and Northgate Avenue, used to be a single-room-occupancy building that was sued by the city in 2014 for being an alleged drug den and “unfit for human habitation.” Oakland inspectors had red-tagged it for fire- and building-code violations.
A census in 2017 found 2,761 homeless people were living in Oakland — 25 percent more than there were in 2015.

6 Mistakes We Make Raising Sons - Kids Books To Prevent Sexual Assault - Books For Littles
Parents of sons, we need to talk

Look around at all those little girls in your son’s school playground. Those girls whose names you know, who go to school with your boys. The fierce ones, the shy ones, the messy ones, and that one with her shoes on the wrong feet.
Every single one of those girls will be sexually assaulted or harassed before she’s 20.

Every. Single. One.

RAINN’s 1 in 6 women experiencing ‘rape or attempted rape’ statistic doesn’t count unreported assaults. Nor does it count slaps on the ass while waitressing. It doesn’t include being followed home on a dark night. It doesn’t include the lovers and friends shaming them into sex they don’t want. It doesn’t include rape threats for being a female gamer/writer/zookeeper/anything.

This doesn’t count the 1 in 33 men and boys who report sexual assault, and the many more who don’t feel safe enough to do so.

This is our normal. This is the rape culture we perpetuate when we let toxic masculinity become someone else’s problem.

This is our responsibility to change. Learn to identify the mistakes we make as parents – and how to change what we expect from our boys.

San Francisco statue that some call racist is removed
A 19th-century statue near San Francisco's City Hall that some said is racist and demeaning to indigenous people was removed early Friday.

A group of Native Americans chanted, beat drums and burned sage as the workers used a crane to take down the “Early Days” statue depicting a Native American at the feet of a Spanish cowboy and a Catholic missionary. It was part of group of bronze statues near City Hall that depict the founding of California.

Native American activists had tried to have the statue removed for decades. They renewed efforts last year after clashes broke out across the U.S. over Confederate monuments.

The San Francisco Board of Appeals voted unanimously Wednesday for the removal of the statue, which was part of the Pioneer Monument first erected in 1894.

So… there are men willing to risk getting a woman pregnant — which means literally risking her life, her health, her social status, her relationships, and her career, so that they can experience a few minutes of _slightly_ more pleasure? Is that for real? Yes. Yes it is.

So it’s not like sex with a condom is _not_ pleasurable, it’s just not _as_ pleasurable. An 8 instead of a 10. Let me emphasize that again: Men regularly choose to put women at massive risk by having non-condom sex, in order to experience a few minutes of slightly more pleasure.

The entire essay is worth reading. Here's an excerpt:

Why would men want to have sex without a condom? Good question. Apparently it’s because for the minutes they are penetrating their partner, having no condom on gives the experience more pleasure.

Police officer fired for not shooting black suspect wins $175,000 compensation | The Independent
A former police officer who claimed he was fired for not shooting an armed black suspect during a standoff has settled a wrongful termination suit with his former department for $175,000 (£126,000).

“At the end of the day, I’m happy to put this chapter of my life to bed,” said Stephen Mader, 27, in a statement. He was also granted a pledge that his former employer would not prevent him from obtaining a new job in law enforcement elsewhere.

Mr Mader was the first officer to respond to an incident, when he arrived at a home in Weirton, West Virginia, on 6 May 2016, where he found Ronald Williams, 23, distraught and wanting to commit “suicide by cop,” according to his lawsuit. Williams pleaded with Mr Mader to shoot him. However, after determining that Williams did not pose an immediate threat to him or fellow officers, despite holding a gun, he tried to negotiate with him.

Essien got all his teachers trained in de-escalation tactics. They learned about how nonverbal communication, tone, volume, cadence, word choice and proximity work to either escalate or de-escalate a situation. Now, when a teacher sees that a student has become escalated, rather than engaging with her and potentially worsening the situation, teachers pick up the phone, call the office for a push-in, and go back to teaching. The support staff all carry walkie-talkies where they receive the call and they respond on a rotation.

“The idea of going to the room and the push-in is to help the teacher repair the damage, the harm that has been done, the disturbance, whatever you want to call it, in the class,” said Antoinette Marracq, who was head counselor at MLK during this transition. When support staff show up in class they can either take over supervising the lesson so the teacher can step out into the hallway and resolve the issue with the student, or intervene themselves. The hope is to help de-escalate the situation and get the student back into class and learning.

Are You Ready To Consider That Capitalism Is The Real Problem?
But millennials aren’t bogged down by these dusty old binaries. For them the matter is simple: They can see that capitalism isn’t working for the majority of humanity, and they’re ready to invent something better.

What might a better world look like? There are a million ideas out there. We can start by changing how we understand and measure progress. As Robert Kennedy famously said, GDP “does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education, or the joy of their play . . . it measures everything, in short, except that which makes life worthwhile.”

We can change that. People want health care and education to be social goods, not market commodities, so we can choose to put public goods back in public hands. People want the fruits of production and the yields of our generous planet to benefit everyone, rather than being siphoned up by the super-rich, so we can change tax laws and introduce potentially transformative measures like a universal basic income. People want to live in balance with the environment on which we all depend for our survival; so we can adopt regenerative agricultural solutions and even choose, as Ecuador did in 2008, to recognize in law, at the level of the nation’s constitution, that nature has “the right to exist, persist, maintain, and regenerate its vital cycles.”

Pods and Pod Mapping Worksheet | Bay Area Transformative Justice Collective

Your pod is made up of the people that you would call on if violence, harm or abuse happened to you; or the people that you would call on if you wanted support in taking accountability for violence, harm or abuse that you’ve done; or if you witnessed violence or if someone you care about was being violent or being abused.

People can have multiple pods. The people you call to support you when you are being harmed may not be the same people you call on to support you when you have done harm, and vice versa. In general, pod people are often those you have relationship and trust with, though everyone has different criteria for their pods.

7 things black people want their well-meaning white friends to know.
So if you're a "woke" friend and ally, here are some things your black friend wants you to know.

1. You're going to have to get uncomfortable.

It could be something as obvious and upsetting as a racist joke. Or something as "benign" as your aunt suggesting you cross the street when she sees a group of black kids walking by. But either way, if you want to be a good friend and a real ally, you're going to have to speak up. You're going to have to have those tough conversations with people you care about.

It's not easy to confront strangers or people you love, but if you don't do it, you are part of the problem. Sitting out isn't an option. No one said being an ally is easy.

California keeps girls in school by providing feminine products -
If she couldn’t make tampons and pads more affordable for everyone, [Assemblymember Garcia, a Democrat representing an area southeast of Los Angeles and chair of the California Legislative Women’s Caucus,] Garcia decided to at least make sure low-income girls in California had easy access. If students have access to free or reduced lunch to ensure they focus on their education, Garcia wondered, why it should be any different with feminine hygiene products?

Garcia first drafted AB 10, a bill addressing this issue, in late 2016. In less than 10 months, in the fall of 2017, the legislation passed both houses with bipartisan support. On October 12, California Gov. Jerry Brown signed Garcia’s legislation into law.

Now, all Title I public schools in California must stock feminine hygiene products in at least half of their bathrooms for students between the 6th and 12th grades. School officials across the state are working quickly to comply with the law, which allows them to be reimbursed by the state for their costs.

California’s AB 10 points in the same direction other states are headed. As of January 1, all schools in Illinois must stock tampons and pads in bathrooms at no cost for students between 6th and 12th grade. New York City passed a similar law in 2016. While many Americans assume that menstruation only causes girls to skip school in poor, underdeveloped countries, principals and politicians across the US are learning it is actually a problem that exists here in this country.

Utah says it won 'war on homelessness', but shelters tell a different story | US news | The Guardian
A year after Utah officials announced to great fanfare that chronic homelessness had been nearly wiped out, a battle is brewing over the future of the largest shelter in the state.

Not because the Road Home, in Salt Lake City, and its 1,000-plus beds aren’t needed in the Utah capital – but because they are.

'Housing first': Dallas's new strategy for the city's most costly homeless people
Read more
On Sunday night, the massive operation housed 1,041 men, women and children on triple bunks in overflow dormitories, in small rooms for desperate families, on so-called medical beds for the sickest and most frail, on yoga mats on the floor.

Some had spent more than 3,000 nights in the jammed facility, one of the nation’s biggest. More than 300 fit the shelter’s definition of chronic homelessness, even if they don’t match the federal government’s guidelines, which the state used to trumpet their good news a year ago on 28 April.

That’s when the state housing and community development division boasted in a press release: “Utah’s Chronic Homelessness Approaching ‘Functional Zero.’ State Achieves Goal Ten Years in the Making.”

Shop Here, Not There: Science Says Reducing Inequality Is Almost That Simple by Chris Winters — YES! Magazine
In the paper “Crowdsourcing the Robin Hood Effect in Cities,” published in June in the journal Applied Network Science, the researchers describe a computer algorithm they created that attempts to “rewire” the complex network of commercial transactions and shopping trips people take part in every day. The goal is to redirect more money to poorer neighborhoods so that the wealth differences between rich and poor parts of a city are evened out.

The study used data from 150,000 people and 95,000 businesses in Barcelona and Madrid, and on the surface the pattern of transactions and the money spent revealed that some neighborhoods were up to five times wealthier than others. But researchers were shocked to find that if as few as 5 percent of commercial transactions were changed—so that capital flowed from richer to poorer neighborhoods—income inequality in those cities was drastically reduced, up to 80 percent.

“We were not expecting that,” said one of the study’s authors, Maxime Lenormand of the National Research Institute of Science and Technology for Environment and Agriculture in Montpelier, France. “Actually, I checked the algorithm because I was not sure in the beginning that everything was OK in the code.”

Increasingly a Necessity: A 15-Point Guide to Surviving Authoritarianism –
Here is Mycielski’s 15-point guide to surviving authoritarianism.

1. They will come to power with a campaign based on fear, scaremongering and distorting the truth. Nevertheless, their victory will be achieved through a democratic electoral process. But beware, as this will be their argument every time you question the legitimacy of their actions. They will claim a mandate from the People to change the system.

Remember — gaining power through a democratic system does not give them permission to cross legal boundaries and undermine said democracy.

2. They will divide and rule. Their strength lies in unity, in one voice and one ideology, and so should yours. They will call their supporters patriots, the only “true Americans.” You will be labelled as traitors, enemies of the state, unpatriotic, the corrupt elite, the old regime trying to regain power. Their supporters will be the “people,” the “sovereign” who chose their leaders.

Don’t let them divide you — remember you’re one people, one nation, with one common good.

50 years ago today, at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis, second-in-command Vasili Arkhipov of the Soviet submarine B-59 refused to agree with his Captain's order to launch nuclear torpedos against US warships and setting off what might well have been a terminal superpower nuclear war.

The US had been dropping depth charges near the submarine in an attempt to force it to surface, unaware it was carrying nuclear arms. The Soviet officers, who had lost radio contact with Moscow, concluded that World War 3 had begun, and 2 of the officers agreed to 'blast the warships out of the water'. Arkhipov refused to agree - unanimous consent of 3 officers was required - and thanks to him, we are here to talk about it.

His story is finally being told - the BBC is airing a documentary on it.

We are a group of women elders who became a council because of community needs.
We are all committed to healing our communities and as long as people come to us in a respectful way, we will continue to do this work in the best way we can.
We believe that everyone in our communities needs to be held accountable for their behaviors. We want a safe community. We also believe that those who come to ask for help in healing so that they can stop problem behaviors should be given a chance to heal.
None of us initiated this process.
Each of us were recently approached by individuals in our community who asked for help and advice in dealing with issues of disrespect or abuse from Anthony Sul.
Several days ago, two young men approached us asking for help. We listened to their grievances and we responded right away. We proposed a traditional circle led by a council of elder women where they could confront Anthony and he could be held accountable and be offered consequences and a chance to get help. They agreed to this process and we set up a meeting for Sunday.

The German occupiers never required the Danish Jews to wear a yellow star, because the Danish had already made it so clear they wouldn't stand for it.
Instead, they decided to strike suddenly with a mass round-up. But word had already gone out, and they were only able to find a handful. Even that handful mostly survived, because due to pressure from the Danes they were kept at Terezin rather than being sent on to Auschwitz.
If you look at the list of Righteous Gentiles kept by Yad Vashem, the list of Danes is very short, because (at the request of the Danish resistance organization) it just says "The People of Denmark." (I think there are a handful of others that snuck on there, but for the most part, individual Danes are not recognized.) And the thing is, in Denmark, it was normal to be a rescuer. It was normal to do whatever you could to protect and shelter the victims of the Nazis.

How to stop sexism and raise a son who respects women.
on the surface, these customs seem innocent enough. But the research I’ve just described charts a compelling and worrying path from these traditions to the development of childhood beliefs that, geez, yeah, girls and boys must really be quite different—and, given the gender hierarchy that’s widely visible, that girls must somehow be inferior. Then, when these stereotypes morph during adolescence, they lead to something even more sinister: The idea that girls are sex objects and that boys are sex-obsessed, that it’s OK for guys to cross sexual boundaries because that’s just how guys are. This is the kind of mindset that could lead a Harvey Weinstein or a James Toback to believe they have a right to help themselves to women’s bodies. So, yeah: Dressing your baby girl in pink ruffles might be cute, but it may also feed a dangerous societal monster.

Let’s move on to some good news: We as parents can definitely instill more egalitarian gender beliefs in our kids. First, and perhaps most easily, we can encourage our kids to play with kids of the other gender.

How learning to share cakes could help stop unfair US elections | New Scientist
With the new approach, one political party gets to draw an electoral map that divides the state into the agreed number of districts. The second political party then chooses one district to freeze so that no more changes can be made to it by either side. They then get to redraw the rest of the map.

Once the new map is complete, the first political party freezes one of the new districts so that no further changes can be made to it, and is allowed to redraw the rest of the map again. This process goes back and forth until every district within the state is frozen. In Pennsylvania, for example, this would require 17 cycles as there are 18 districts.

“Because you have this basic symmetry, the first party doesn’t have a big advantage over the other, so it’s a big improvement from just letting one party choose the district,” says Pegden.

Overcome your own transphobia. Trans women are women. Trans men are men. Accept the lived truth of NB and GNC people, whether or not they are women.
Be pro-choice and be vocal in support of reproductive rights. (And generous! Give to the National Network of Abortion Funds!) Understand that the opposite of reproductive choice is forced childbearing.

KatyKatiKate: next-level rage stroke: harvey fucking weinstein
What we need your response to be when you hear about Harvey fucking Weinstein:

1. He's manipulated his position of power to put women in positions of vulnerability where they couldn't choose not to engage with him sexually without risking their careers or reputations. I need to work harder to become aware of my position of power, as a man, to make sure that I am not putting women in positions of vulnerability.

2. What can I do to support women who have suffered sexual assault? This conversation isn't about how brave and strong I am, it's about the challenges that women continue to face just existing in the world.

3. Sexual assault is a violent crime that is offensive to me as a human being, not because I am related to a person who is female.

4.  I am going to work on my own awareness of how I benefit from systems that keep Harvey fucking Weinstein on top for 20 years while he rapes and assaults women. I'm going to work on dismantling those systems. It's uncomfortable to see it, but I have to see it.

5. I listen to women. I believe them. I am not shocked.

Oakland approves homeless ordinance to allow ‘tuff sheds' as temporary solution - Story | KTVU
"Often times homeless people don't want to move into shelters where there's just a large room of cots. Often there are hours with check in and check out. These are adults. We cannot force them to take these services," she said. But she noted that the new shelters would be closer to the tent-situation that they're currently in.

"They provide some form of privacy."

The outdoor complexes, which will be able to house up to 40 people, also aim to keep communities together. The goal, Schaaf said, is to get the residents into a better situation in six months.

"'Tuff sheds' are not designed to be permanent places of residence. They are not 'tiny homes'.

The cost of the project is estimated at $450,000 a year for the City of Oakland, which includes all of the supportive services such as 24-hour security, housing navigators, mental health and addiction services.

Australia enacted strict gun control laws after a horrific mass shooting in 1996. It worked.
On April 28, 1996, a gunman opened fire on tourists in a seaside resort in Port Arthur, Tasmania. By the time he was finished, he had killed 35 people and wounded 23 more. It was the worst mass murder in Australia’s history.

Twelve days later, Australia’s government did something remarkable. Led by newly elected conservative Prime Minister John Howard, it announced a bipartisan deal with state and local governments to enact sweeping gun-control measures. A decade and a half hence, the results of these policy changes are clear: They worked really, really well.

At the heart of the push was a massive buyback of more than 600,000 semi-automatic shotguns and rifles, or about one-fifth of all firearms in circulation in Australia. The country’s new gun laws prohibited private sales, required that all weapons be individually registered to their owners, and required that gun buyers present a “genuine reason” for needing each weapon at the time of the purchase. (Self-defense did not count.) In the wake of the tragedy, polls showed public support for these measures at upwards of 90 percent.

I’m an environmental journalist, but I never write about overpopulation. Here’s why. - Vox
Female empowerment is the most effective carbon mitigation strategy
The first way to look at population is as a pure numbers game. More people means more consumers and more emitters, so the thing to do is slow the rise of population. Specifically, since most of the new people are going to come from poor or developing countries, the question is specifically how to slow population growth there.

Luckily, we know the answer. It is family planning that enables women to have only children they want and choose, and education of girls, giving them access to income opportunities outside the home. We know that women, given the resources and the choice, will opt for smaller families.

How Do We Get Out of This Mess? – George Monbiot
the reason why, despite its multiple and manifest failures, we appear to be stuck with neoliberalism is that we have failed to produce a new narrative with which to replace it.

You cannot take away someone’s story without giving them a new one. It is not enough to challenge an old narrative, however outdated and discredited it may be. Change happens only when you replace it with another. When we develop the right story, and learn how to tell it, it will infect the minds of people across the political spectrum.
human beings are, in the words of an article in the journal Frontiers in Psychology, “spectacularly unusual when compared to other animals”. This refers to our astonishing degree of altruism. We possess an unparalleled sensitivity to the needs of others, a unique level of concern about their welfare, and a peerless ability to create moral norms that generalise and enforce these tendencies.

We are also, among mammals, the supreme cooperators.
Those who want a kinder politics know we have, in theory at least, the numbers on our side. Most people are socially-minded, empathetic and altruistic. Most people would prefer to live in a world in which everyone is treated with respect and decency, and in which we do not squander either our own lives or the natural gifts on which we and the rest of the living world depend. But a small handful, using lies and distractions and confusion, stifle this latent desire for change.

We know that, if we can mobilise such silent majorities, there is nothing this small minority can do to stop us.

This Study Found That as Immigration Increases, Violent Crime Decreases | Colorlines
Published online yesterday (June 6), “Refuting Fear: Immigration, Youth and California's Stunning Declines in Crime and Violence” documents “dramatic reductions in crime” as California’s population has evolved from 67 percent White in 1980 to 62 percent people of color in 2017. The shift is even more pronounced when considering people under the age of 25, where the population went from 60 percent White to 71 percent people of color—a demographic change that the author, senior research fellow Mike Males, says is largely driven by immigration.

The study found that as the complexion of California changed, crime decreased: violent crime rates for youth dropped by 72 percent between 1980 and 2015, and homicide arrests of youth plummeted by 92 percent in the same period.

How a remote California tribe set out to save its river and stop a suicide epidemic - LA Times
Last year, a rash of suicides pushed the tribe, California’s largest and one of its poorest, into an existential crisis.

Seven Yurok had killed themselves during an 18-month span. Four died in a neighborhood of just 15 homes, and one shot himself in the home where another man had died the same way six years before.

The deaths drove the suicide rate on the reservation of 3,000 people to nearly 14 times the national average.

But as the Yurok quietly buried the dead, a grieving father decided he could no longer watch helplessly. A mother joined him, then an aunt. They rounded up others to figure out how they could halt this grim call to the grave.

(91) David Gerrold - As much as I would love to write a scathing post...
As much as I would love to write a scathing post about how we ended up with an angry confused spoiled brat in the White House, it's a waste of effort to fix blame, it's more important to fix the future.
Here are my thoughts.

1) The Democratic party must return to its roots as a party of the working man. This means campaigning aggressively in red states -- sending in Biden, both Obamas, both Clintons, but also all the contenders for the next election -- Booker, Castro, Warren, and so on. Maybe Bernie Sanders too.
2) But all that campaigning has to be about the issues near and dear to the rural communities. The red states aren't interested in LGBT issues, they don't have queers in West Elbow, Arkansas, just ask. But they are concerned about jobs, jobs, and jobs. That's how they perceive the economy. Jobs. So the Democrats have to discuss the kinds of jobs that are going to be created. Discussing jobs in solar energy, windmills, service industries, computer tech, and more, might play in Manhattan, but not in Detroit where factories stand empty or Kansas where the corn silos stand so high you can see them from twenty miles away.

Official Blames Lead Levels In Oakland’s Fruitvale On Paint « CBS San Francisco
Larry Brooks with Alameda County’s lead prevention program said they should not.

“No. In Flint, the problem was the water system,” explained Brooks. “In Alameda County, no.”

Brooks said the problem issue is the lead paint used on homes prior to 1978.

“Deteriorated lead-based paint can be found throughout Oakland,” said Brooks. “Most of the homes built in Oakland were built prior to 1980; 90 percent.”

The county’s “Healthy Homes” department educates the public and provides grants to qualifying low-income residents to upgrade homes.

But Brooks believes it’s not just a Fruitvale problem. It is far more widespread.

“Over the last ten years, we’ve treated over 5,000 children for lead poisoning in the county,” said Brooks. “It is still a clear and present danger for children living in aging homes.”

As education on lead poisoning increases, he says so will screening. Health officials might find even more children with elevated level of lead in their blood.

“There is no safe level,” said Brooks. “My goal would be zero percent.”

Alameda County officials say they have over $3 million to help low-income homeowners deal with lead in their home.

Clinton is standing on a stage with Beyoncé, an heir to Nina Simone, the woman whose voice and spirit struck the man from Duluth, and Clinton is quoting Jay Z: "Rosa Parks sat so Martin Luther could walk. And Martin Luther walked so that Barack Obama could run. And Barack Obama ran so that all the children could fly."

"Well," Clinton continues, "we have unfinished business to do."

This is the unfinished business you must get off your depressed liberal ass and do. In your city you will find everyone Donald Trump wants to demonize, marginalize, deport, and degrade. Together we must wrestle the earth back from fools.

You live inside a machine that has been killing fascism for a long time. Think of the countless refugees from rural America, people who might otherwise have grown up to be Trump voters, who moved to your city and were changed. Newspapers have long been part of the machine that kills fascism. Maybe your own guitar, your own voice, your own artistic vision will become part of this machine that kills fascism. Maybe your money will become part of this machine that kills fascism. Maybe you and your tech-savvy coworkers will create new and unheard of ways to kill fascism. Whatever it is, whatever you can do, get busy.

Cities are now the home of the resistance. You are the resistance. Kick yourself and the machine into action. Yes, it's a messy machine and there's plenty to criticize within it.

Five Things To Do To Protect Yourself Under a Trump Surveillance State
First, you should try, where possible, to support companies, apps, and services that collect as little information and data about you as possible. Simply put: the easiest way to prevent the surveillance state from accessing private data and information is to ensure that companies don’t have it — or store it for long — in the first place. If there are sites, services, or apps out there that use and store a lot of your personal data, and you want to continue using them — try to start a conversation with the company. Why is it necessary for them to collect X data for Y amount of time? Sometimes it’s for a legitimate business purpose, other times it’s to help create a profile the company can sell to marketers or data brokers.

The white flight of Derek Black - The Washington Post
Derek began to feel detached from the person he had been.

But then came the election campaign of 2016, and suddenly the white nationalism Derek had been trying to unlearn was the unavoidable subtext to national debates over refugees, immigration, Black Lives Matter and the election itself. Late in August, Derek watched in his apartment as Hillary Clinton gave a major speech about the rise of racism. She explained how white supremacists had rebranded themselves as white nationalists. She referenced Duke and mentioned the concept of a “white genocide,” which Derek had once helped popularize. She talked about how Trump had hired a campaign manager with ties to the alt-right. She said: “A fringe movement has essentially taken over the Republican Party.”

It was the very same point Derek had spent so much of his life believing in, but now it made him feel both fearful for the country and implicated. “It’s scary to know that I helped spread this stuff, and now it’s out there,” he told one of his Shabbat friends.

Inconceivable Wisdom from Greg: Unpacking Casual Offenses In Class
"You're such a bitch," T said to another male student in class.

"What was that?" I asked.

"Nothing. I just called him a girl," T said.

"First, you said 'bitch' but lets just put aside, and talk about the fact that you equated being a bitch, an animal, not a human, to being a girl. So girls aren't people?"

"No. I didn't mean that. I just meant, you know, he's like a girl."

"Let's unpack that."

Several students perked up. They'd seen this happen before. They'd seen people called out on casually offensive statements.

"How many girls in here take gymnastics?" I asked. A few hands. "How many girls in here swim competitively?" A few hands. "Ballet?" A few more. "Field hockey? A bunch of hands. "Soccer? Basketball?"A bunch more. "Okay, I almost forgot Jillani - you're a mixed martial artist, right. So that's one for MMA. How many of you have gotten a concussion, a sprain, or a broken bone?" Almost all the girls in the class raised their hands. "How many of you quit because of one of those injuries?" No hands.

Throughout the survey T slowly realized my purpose and went from a wide grin to an eventual look of embarrassment. "So T, when you called your friend a girl did you mean extremely competitive, tough, and athletic? You understand what I mean?"

"Yeah Mr. Andree."

10 Children's Books That Help White Kids Understand What Children Of Color Are Up Against | Romper
With years of racism, prejudice, and mistreatment of people of color, the need to break it down to children who are not of color is something that is extremely important. For some people, having that conversation of racism and issues with people or children of color may be difficult, so having a few children's books that help white kids understand what children of color are up against help get the point across.

As the aggression between races continues to heighten, there's an extensive amount of history that needs to be explained to children who are not of color to be able to understand why those of color are in the middle of an uphill battle that expands back further than we can really trace. Regardless of what some think, racism is something that is taught to our children, not something that they are born with. Teaching them what it means to be racist, the hurt that it has caused people of color in the past and currently, and the effects that it leaves on both parties is something that holds a great importance.

Whether you're looking for a way to start the discussion on racism or deliver more history on the fight people of color have endured throughout time, these 10 books will help accomplish what you need.

Social skills for autonomous people. — Perspective in the face of other people's anger
Because when you’re panicking, you’re not really capable of apologizing sincerely anyway
It’s ok to need time to think
It’s ok to realize that you’re panicking and need to back away from the situation to be able to think
Someone who won’t let you do this is probably not someone you should trust
Countermeasure #2: considering reversal:
Think about what you did, and how the person who is angry at you is reacting
What do you think you’d do if the situation was reversed?
In light of that, do you think their reaction is reasonable?
And do you think you actually did something terribly wrong?
(The answer to this might be yes even if you think you would have reacted differently. But thinking about reversal can still make the situation easier to understand)
Countermeasure #3: Think in concrete terms:
What, specifically, does the person who is mad at you think you did?
Do you think you actually did that thing?
If not, do they have a reasonable basis for thinking that you did that thing?
Are they understanding correctly? Are they listening to your explanation of what you think you did? (eg: if they think you said a slur and you actually said a different word that they misheard, are they screaming at you and saying you are just making excuses?)
If you did do the thing, why are they angry about the thing?
Do you think it’s reasonable that they are offended?
Do you think it’s reasonable that they are *as* offended as they are?
(Think about this seriously, especially if they think you are being racist, sexist, transphobic, ableist, etc towards them. Your initial reaction to this kind of thing is likely to be off base. But it is also possible to be wrong about these things, and ultimately, you have to think for yourself about whether you think you’re guilty of what you’re accused of.)

Why The War on Drugs Is a Huge Failure / Boing Boing
The countless billions of dollars poured into the War on Drugs has resulted in mass incarceration, corruption, political destabilization, violence, the rise of drug cartels, and systemic human rights abuses around the world. The one thing the War on Drugs hasn't done is stopped people from using drugs. The animated video series, Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell, explains why the problems associated with drug use are caused by the war against them.

(28) Marlene McCall - This may be familiar to some of you. I'm going to...
1. Require registration, owner licensing, and liability insurance on every single firearm, just like cars. If you sell the gun, you have to tell the government to whom you sold it, just like you notify the DMV when you sell a car, and the new owner has to register it. ...
2. Ban all assault weapons and automatic weapons, under all circumstances. Their purpose is to kill people, lots of people, quickly. Yes, some people will be unhappy. Too bad. These weapons are simply too dangerous. Those unhappy people will have to get their rocks off some other way. How to implement such a prohibition? I'm not sure, but a three-step approach, probably. Outlaw their manufacture and importation as of a certain date. Outlaw their sale a year later, and during that year, implement a buy back program. After they are totally illegal, apply strong criminal penalties against those who manufacture, import, sell, or posses them. Criminal penalties, not civil penalties. There is too much profit in the arms industry for civil penalties to be effective in curtailing the business of those who would continue to operate illegally. Lock them in jail.
3. Require proof of legal gun ownership and a license to operate a gun in order to purchase ammunition. No gun (even an illegal gun) or gun owner (even a person without legal ownership of a gun, or without a license to legally operate a gun) can do harm if they don't have ammunition.

100 race-conscious things you can say to your child to advance racial justice - Raising Race Conscious Children
In honor of Raising Race Conscious Children’s 100th post, this list lifts a quote from each and every blog post to date, modeling language that has actually been used in a conversation with a child regarding race (and other identity-markers such as gender and class). Through our blog, workshops/webinars, and small group workshop series, we support adults who are trying to talk about race with young children, with the goals of dismantling the color-blind framework and preparing young people to work toward racial justice.
