Stormy Daniels Didn’t Want to Be Anybody’s Hero
This interview is gold. Her attitude is diamonds :) ------------ -Other people are just really mean, and I see how you handle them on Twitter. So fun. -You think it’s fun? Uh-huh. -Nobody else thinks that’s fun. It doesn’t stress you out? No, it’s great sport for me. That’s how I entertain myself on flights now. Who’s being mean to me today? It’s actually disappointing, because mostly they’re nice now. ------------ “Oh, Stormy Daniels is the best female director.” And I’d be like, “What does my vagina have to do with it? She hasn’t directed shit.” - That’s a feminist statement, isn’t it? I feel sorry for men right now. It’s not a good climate to have a penis. It’s actually sexist to accuse men as a whole of something, you know? It’s just — I don’t know. A guy can’t even open a door for a lady without being called a pig. - There will be women who read this and be very angry. Oh, finally I’ll have good tweets.

Saudi Arabia vows retaliation if punished over missing critic
Tech and spooks in recent murder of Jamal Khassoggi. Sending a real signal here is Saudi Arabia. I think Le Carre was right here - 'Arabs. You can rent one, but you can't buy one.' Tech coolness and the sheer detail coming out: • Khashoggi himself recorded his questioning via Apple Watch. • Records were uploaded to ICloud • Saudis questioned, tortured, and killed him • Hit squad had access to watch, deleted some files • Phone had backup

This is a brilliant analogy. "In this tale the dying Constantine stays alive by the simple and sensible expedient of promising his soul to three separate demons of Hell." Mrs May and the Tory Party :)))

Woman wins £80,000 in damages from man cleared of raping her in St Andrews - BBC News
History in the making. Criminal court, via jury, found verdict of 'not proven'. Civil court, via sheriff, found for pursuer and awarded £80K with sheriff saying the rape happened. Fascinating balance of different evidence standards and different burdens of proof. In criminal cases, we look for corroboration and "proof beyond reasonable doubt". Civilly, the test is "balance of probability". In cases like this I think here is an argument to be made for the defendent getting anonymity as a finding of rape in a civil action is, legally, quite different from a conviction for rape in the High Court. Or should we relocate rape prosecutions to a specialist sexual offences court, without juries? Seriously juries are full of people who think drinking makes you liable for rape.....

Did you feel happy yesterday? Broadening the measurement of living standards - Resolution Foundation
Clearly Brexit and Trump have not cut through. We are happier than in 2011 according to a ONS annual national survey. We are better in Scotland because we are better people - "Average ratings of feeling the things done in life are worthwhile increased in Scotland" Most significant factor in being unhappy? "poorest personal well-being is reporting “bad” or “very bad” health, followed by being economically inactive with long-term illness or disability; being middle-aged, being single, separated, widowed or divorced; renting rather than owning a home; and having low levels of education. Alcohol causes one in 20 deaths worldwide, says WHO | Society | The Guardian
Sobering reading especially if you are Scottish... "Alcohol is responsible for more than 5% of all deaths worldwide, or around 3 million a year, new figures have revealed...The report, which comes out every four years, reveals the continued impact of alcohol on public health around the world, and highlights that the young bear the brunt: 13.5% of deaths among people in their 20s are linked to booze, with alcohol responsible for 7.2% of premature deaths overall. It also stresses that harm from drinking is greater among poorer consumers than wealthier ones.

Theresa May Has Angrily Doubled Down On Her Brexit Plan. A Senior EU Government Official Says She's "Panicking"

The part of Brexit everyone’s been avoiding is finally here: immigration | Gaby Hinsliff | Opinion | The Guardian
I'm with Gaby "You can’t help wondering where its chart coolly summing up the facts – no evidence that EU migration has reduced wages or job opportunities for Britons on average, although some possible impact on the young and lower-skilled; some evidence that migration has pushed up house prices but also confirmation that migrants pay more in taxes than they take in benefits – was during the hysteria of the referendum debate."

LKML: Linus Torvalds: Linux 4.19-rc4 released, an apology, and a maintainership note
There is hope for the planet. Linus Torvalds apologised (uber geek and creator of Linux). Inspiring — a counter to the notion that people can’t change. --------------------- This is my reality. I am not an emotionally empathetic kind of person and that probably doesn’t come as a big surprise to anybody. Least of all me. The fact that I then misread people and don’t realize (for years) how badly I’ve judged a situation and contributed to an unprofessional environment is not good. This week people in our community confronted me about my lifetime of not understanding emotions. My flippant attacks in emails have been both unprofessional and uncalled for. Especially at times when I made it personal. In my quest for a better patch, this made sense to me. I know now this was not OK and I am truly sorry. The above is basically a long-winded way to get to the somewhat painful personal admission that hey, I need to change some of my behavior, and I want to apologize to the people that my personal behavior hurt and possibly drove away from kernel development entirely.

AT Command Injection on the LG G4 Smartphone - YouTube
Interesting security flaw in Android phones. Plug into a random charger and it can bypass phone security and do anything a user can. Pretty cool ghost user hack. (Techie kids - doesn't require debug mode on and works with lock enabled...) It works because phones can interpret AT commands like old modems.

Abusive partners are now tracking their spouses with apps made to watch their kids – VICE News
The downside to Android’s openness. Anyone at risk: do not use an Android phone. You can literally cough in the direction of one to get access. Android security is a nightmare. On the other hand, iPhones and iPads are stellar, *stellar* security wise. Get the cheapest one you can afford (past 5s). Just do it.

Exclusive: June 2018 cover star Zadie Smith weighs in on the great age debate | Elle India
Zadie - on fire as usual here. I am so a literary fanboy. Really must read her books. --------- It is commonly thought that time is the particular enemy of women. Because we supposedly have so much to lose: our ‘looks’, our fertility, our cultural capital. There have been feminist modifications to this story over the years, but it remains powerful: a tale long told by men and subsequently retold and internalised by women. But there are other ways of looking at it. That women have timepieces built into their bodies — primarily ‘biological clocks’ and the menopause — signs that must eventually be heeded, signs that are, finally, impossible to ignore, seems to me at least as much gift as curse. That our bodies should bring us such concrete signs of time passing — that they should have the miraculous ability to bring us news of what is actually the case — surely means that every woman is offered the opportunity to be, as Young Disciples have it, a “conscious observer” of her own life.
