Why online politics gets so extreme so fast
The main thing I think parents just don't get is how much of a problem Youtube is. Its algorithmic bias towards showing more and more extreme content is definitely worrying as a parent. When i hear parents saying twitter or facebook or instagram is a probably i just shrug my shoulders. Youtube definitely opens more bad doors than good ones. And the time that children spend on it dwarfs any other media and thats growing. You want to know what a child thinks? Check their youtube history...... Anyway good podcast from my favourite professor Zeynep

Glyphosate Use and Cancer Incidence in the Agricultural Health Study. - PubMed - NCBI
Remember kids every single person who lived in Westminster 200 years ago is dead. I guess that means Westminster causes death? Conclusions: In this large, prospective cohort study, no association was apparent between glyphosate and any solid tumors or lymphoid malignancies overall, including NHL and its subtypes. There was some evidence of increased risk of AML among the highest exposed group that requires confirmation.

Prof. Pawłowicz apeluje do minister Emilewicz: "Proszę raczej jeszcze bardziej otworzyć się na powrót polskich pracowników"
OK so Poland. A moment of funny politics and immigration / emmigration. “Come back, post-2004 emigrants!” “Okay, pay me what I think I’m worth.” “Erm......can we pay you in patriotism?” “No.” ----- 'We're ready to open our borders for workers from outside Poland,' says Poland's minister for entrepreneurship. Poland has received more non-EU immigrants than almost any other member state in the last couple of years and govt is seeking to encourage more. The policy has drawn criticism from the nationalist right, including within PiS. One MP says the minister should focus on ensuring the return of Polish emigrants in the west or ethnic Poles to the east, rather than encouraging non-Polish immigration.

A Detailed Look at RFC 8446 (a.k.a. TLS 1.3)
Geeky moment - an underlying piece of Internet Architecture is done - TLS 1.3 is a thing. Love the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) - "We reject: kings, presidents and voting. We believe in: rough consensus and running code." TLS stops hackers, NSA, governments from reading your data on the wire - no spooks can listen in. That green padlock on your browser just got an upgrade.

Twitter and Facebook Are Platforms, Not Publishers - The Atlantic
“Print technology created the public. Electric technology created the mass.” What will the networked technology of the internet create? Good article I'm with Steve Jobs on this one - "The axis today is not liberal and conservative, the axis is constructive-destructive, and you’ve cast your lot with the destructive people. Fox has become an incredibly destructive force in our society. You can be better, and this is going to be your legacy if you’re not careful."

'Amazon tax' on web purchases would help save high street, says MSP - The Courier
One of the most idiotic ideas ever. If a business can't succeed without government help it deserves to fail. I look forward to the public sphere being reclaimed after the councils have failed to protect it. I want loads of little pop ups everywhere. Underworld & Iggy Pop - Trapped - YouTube
Iggy Pop and Underworld klaxon. --- While overseeing the soundtrack for T2 Trainspotting, Underworld’s Rick Smith arranged a meeting with Iggy Pop in a room at The Savoy Hotel on London’s Strand to discuss working on collaborative music for the film. Their respective tracks "Lust for Life" and "Born Slippy (Nuxx)" had perfectly bookended the first Trainspotting film two decades previously. On arrival, Iggy found a fully working studio set up and eagerness to get cracking. The results are all out now: Teatime Dub Encounters EP ("Bells & Circles" | "Trapped" | "I'll See Big" | "Get Your Shirt")

what is the future of scottish football? - i-D
Well that was brutal. Have wondered how Croatia was so good ... “Scotland haven’t qualified for a major football tournament for 20 years now. Yet Scotland has a bigger population than Croatia, who beat England to a place in this year’s World Cup final. It also has two of the most famous (or infamous) football clubs in the world, Rangers FC and Celtic FC, and after England, one of the oldest and richest histories in the game.”

World politics thoughts from an FT lunch with Kissinger. Never been a fan of Kissinger and he’s an idiot on AI but he has seen things so it’s worth a read before it disappears behind the paywall. “I don’t want to talk too much about Trump because at some point I should do it in a more coherent way than this,” Kissinger replies. But you are being coherent, I protest. Please don’t stop. There is another pregnant silence. “I think Trump may be one of those figures in history who appears from time to time to mark the end of an era and to force it to give up its old pretences. It doesn’t necessarily mean that he knows this, or that he is considering any great alternative. It could just be an accident.” Certainly chimes with my thoughts. America cannot uphold a world based rules order anymore. But he can’t see how technology has changed everything. Something’s round that corner that Trump is pushing us into.

The GIGABORE: A decade of cultural blandness – Sakunthala – Medium
Now Gigabore is something I can get behind....we’re entering (are) in an era of boredom. Conformity and conscientiousness. But Trump and / or Brexit!!!! Sorry kid you’re wrong the bizarre phenomenon of at least one-third of the American public not believing that Trump is a liar, or not caring — owes its origins to a nihilistic intellectual milieu arising from the 1960s and a section of the New Left. In the darkest of ironies, Trumpism emerged from “the gospel of postmodernism,”: Cultural relativism and the radical-chic proposition that there are no universal truths, that “facts are fungible and socially constructed.” “But, in the meantime, we must fight the GIGABORE with absurdism. Ignore politics, ignore moral arguments, make awesome stuff, increase aesthetic pleasure, do weird shit, experiment as much as you can, occasionally go to a nightclub instead of the gym, remember that FUN is half the point of civilization.” I’m down for the revolution. Bring it.
