Hillary Clinton: a fate worse than mere defeat
Historians will look back on 2016 as a textbook case of how not to run a campaign. Clinton’s demise owes more to the fact that she personified the establishment than to her gender. She will surely be haunted by her mis-steps for the rest of her life. She could have been America’s first female commander-in-chief — and one of the White House’s most experienced occupants in decades. Instead, she lost to an outsider whom all the experts had dismissed as a joke.

A linguist on Arrival's alien language.
Right, it’s not phonetic in the way that English is phonetic. So I took the alien language to be that kind of writing system. I still took the visual system to be encoding the same concepts of the oral system so that the aliens would have for any given concept a written version and a spoken version. Logographic systems on Earth are essentially similar. The Japanese have three different writing systems. One of them, Kanji, is shared with Chinese. The spoken languages are very different. The Japanese speaker and the Chinese speaker can’t talk to each other, but they share a writing system because the writing system doesn’t actually match phonetically onto the sounds of the language.

When you think about it, it’s not that weird because we do the same thing with numerals, right? I pronounce the number 7 very differently than a French speaker—I don’t even know the word for seven in French—but if I write it down, they understand the concept.

Why are so many first-generation Chinese immigrants supporting Donald Trump? - SupChina
The appeal of Trump to so many first-generation Chinese immigrants quickly became a topic I obsessed about. Fanfan and I had lunch the other day at the home of a lovely, retired Chinese-American woman (she asked that I not use her name) in Chapel Hill, and this disturbing development was almost all we could talk about. A native Beijinger and member of the Class of 1977 — the first crop of students to matriculate in universities after the Cultural Revolution — she shared our horror at Trump’s popularity among recently arrived immigrants, and confirmed that, as I had suspected, this rightward tilt was an entirely new phenomenon and was certainly not the case either four or eight years ago. The stridency among these Trump supporters, she said, reminded her of nothing so much as the Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution.

Whatever its causes — and they are too numerous to get into here — Chinese racism is well attested, and many Americans would be shocked were they privy to conversations about race taking place in Chinese when participants think no one else is listening.

All too often, there is this belief that it’s an American problem and that their only interest is to ensure the short-term safety of their own families.

The East Coast Crips-affiliated gang behind those robberies, police said, specifically targeted Asian-owned homes — discernible by the shoes left on the front porch — and was responsible for a reported 5,000 burglaries.

The president, the shaman and the scandal engulfing South Korea
A common refrain, for those seeking a silver lining is that the country is no stranger to crisis. Born out of the ashes of conflict and on a permanent war footing, it has faced pivotal moments on a near 20-year cycle. The most recent, the Asian financial crisis, struck in 1997.

Out of each crisis, the situation for South Koreans has always improved, says Kim Woo-chan, a professor at Korea University. A coup in 1961 led to the transformation of the poverty-stricken economy, while the assassination of Park Chung-hee in 1979 resulted in a more market-focused approach. The 1997 crisis prompted many of the chaebol to change the way they are run and ease their reliance on debt.

The hope is that the current crisis will yield a healthier democracy and a leader strong enough to enforce economic, political and corporate reforms.

“We are very resilient,” says Prof Kim. “I feel confident that if people keep showing up to protest in these numbers and keep showing their power and influence, the politicians will have no choice [but to clean up politics].”

Trump marks the end of America as world’s ‘indispensable nation’
This does not mean a “return” to a mythical American isolationism. This powerful, commercially minded nation has never cut itself off from the rest of the world, not even in the 1930s. What it does mean is a return to national solipsism, with a much narrower definition of American interests and a reluctance to act in the world except to protect those narrow interests. To put it another way, America may once again start behaving like a normal nation.

All this was profoundly in US interests, but only when viewed from a most enlightened perspective. Americans came to that enlightenment only after a world war, followed by the rise of Soviet communism, which persuaded them to define their interests broadly and accept responsibility for a liberal world order that benefited others as much as, sometimes more than, it benefited them.

The US is no longer in the reassurance business. For decades an abnormal US foreign policy has aimed at denying Russia and China spheres of interest. That made sense when upholding an order to avoid a breakdown like that of the first half of the 20th century. But a narrower reading of US interests does not require it. What interest is it of the US who exercises hegemony in east Asia and in eastern and central Europe?

The Consuming Fervor of “Arrival”
When aliens come, how will they get here? Well, unless they are sly infiltrators of the flesh, they will probably go for the kind of boastful, get-a-load-of-us craft that was immortalized by Douglas Adams in “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.” He wrote, “The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don’t.” That was true of “Independence Day,” and it is doubly true of “Arrival,” in which a dozen mountainous ovoids—charcoal gray and rough to the touch, like a pumice stone—show up at various locations around Earth. Rather than land, the vessels suspend themselves in dignified fashion, with their tips facing downward and not quite touching the ground. Whatever their occupants want, it’s a pretty cool way to make an entrance.

what lingers, days after you leave the cinema, is neither the wizardry nor the climax but the zephyr of emotional intensity that blows through the film.

Donald Trump: The next four years
Mr Trump defies political labels, having cherry-picked positions from both parties: hostility to free-trade deals and plans for big public construction projects from the Democrats, big tax cuts and deregulation from the Republicans. This has left Congress and Washington insiders guessing exactly what kind of agenda he plans to pursue.

He has also suggested that the US could remove troops from Japan and urged Tokyo and Seoul to consider developing nuclear weapons — almost certainly sparking a nuclear arms race in Asia — to reduce the security burden on the US off North Korea.

Mr Trump destroyed two political dynasties during his campaign, the Bushes and the Clintons. Many Americans and most of the rest of the world hope he will now stop the politics of destruction and return to his roots — as a builder.

So what exactly do we mean by ‘populism’?
What makes populism seductive, and dangerous, is that it trades on an intuition about democracy that those of us who are democrats share: that “the people can rule”. The populist holds out the promise — illusory, no doubt, but powerful all the same — that there is such a thing as the popular will and that he or she alone can embody it. Understood in this way, populism is, as Müller puts it, the permanent “shadow” of representative democracy. And as such, it will always be with us, waxing and waning as historical conditions allow.

So Much Land, Too Few Russians - The New York Times
Russia urgently needs Chinese investments. In return, in the Far East’s southeast corner, China has made Russian land along the Amur River border a virtual colony, having secured the right for Chinese people to work there. In the last decade, huge tracts have been leased to China at rock- bottom prices. Nearly two million acres with gigantic pig farms and fields of soybean and corn are being worked by Chinese agribusinesses. Most recently, Moscow leased out about 300,000 acres in the Trans-Baikal region for 49 years. The price: $2 an acre and $368 million in promised investments.

Once a booming frontier town, it now resembles a typical 1970s-era Soviet city — drab, dilapidated, economically depressed. Its population is 216,000. Just across the river is the bustling Chinese city of Heihe, with gleaming new high-rises and a population nearly eight times that of Blagoveshchensk.

With the iPhone 7, Apple Changed the Camera Industry Forever - The New Yorker
The distinct business advantage that Apple has achieved thanks to its hardware is the sheer volume of iPhone sales, which justifies the big spending on the specialized chips that make that hardware so powerful. The new image processor is a perfect example. It can spread the cost of that investment in chips over hundreds of millions of iPhones. In comparison, the falling sales of stand-alone cameras have hampered the ability of camera companies to innovate and spend on core technologies. Given that hardware and software are equally important today, Apple’s advances in both areas makes it difficult for anyone to beat the company in photography for the masses. You can see why the camera companies are doomed.

France Has the Burkini Blues - The New York Times
A number of factors have turned France into the epicenter of the clash between extremist Islam and Western societies. They include the presence of Western Europe’s largest Muslim community, French participation in conflicts from the Middle East to Mali, the tensions deriving from France’s troubled colonial past (notably in Algeria), and, perhaps most of all, the Republic’s firm doctrine of laïcité, or secularism, designed to subsume all ethnic, racial, religious and other differences into French citizenship.

That said, it is also unacceptable to ban Zanetti’s burkini from beaches. A burkini is not in itself “a political project,” “a counter-society” or a symbol of women’s enslavement, as Valls argued. No, it is a choice of dress reflecting a religious belief protected under the French Constitution. If anything, it is the counter-bikini.

Often the choice to wear one has been imposed through forms of male domination sanctioned by certain readings of Islam and pervasive in societies like Saudi Arabia, but equally it may reflect a woman’s independently embraced identity. That is not for officials to decide. Inside the burkini lurk many different women’s journeys.

The Paper

Who Is Polluting Rio’s Bay?
A major part of Rio’s winning Olympic bid was a plan to capture and treat 80 percent of the sewage that flows into Guanabara Bay, something organizers now admit will not happen — certainly not by August, if ever.

Guanabara Bay was discovered by Portuguese explorers on Jan. 1, 1502 — hence the name Rio de Janeiro, or River of January, for the settlement that grew on its shores.

As it slows and widens, the Rio Sarapuí passes thousands more homes and several factories and refineries, all of which see the river not as a waterway for beauty and enjoyment but as a back alley, a channel to carry away their unwanted waste.

Why the Remain Campaign Lost the Brexit Vote - The New Yorker
To get people to turn out and vote in your favor, you also have to give them something positive to rally behind. The Leave campaign, for all its lies and disinformation, provided just such a lure. It claimed that liberating Britain from the shackles of the E.U. would enable it to reclaim its former glory. The Remain side argued, in effect, that while the E.U. isn’t great, Britain would be even worse off without it. That turned out to be a losing story.

Alternative guide to Euro 2016 - FT.com
The French took a long time to fall en masse for football. In other countries, professional football started out as the sport of the urban working classes. But most of France never became very industrialised, and so the French working class stayed relatively small. The Parisian elite long had contempt for the sport, while in rural France football teams rarely became a strong source of local communal identity. Only in France’s few traditionally proletarian towns — notably Lens, Marseille and Saint-Etienne — did workers, uprooted from their ancestral villages, find belonging by supporting the local football team, much as they did in Manchester or Milan or the German Ruhr region.

The “black, blanc, beur” (black, white, son of Arab) team was a picture of a unified, multicultural nation. It was probably France’s happiest communal moment since Liberation in 1944, with the difference being that in 1998 all French people were on the same side.

French complaints about les Bleus provide a way for the nation to debate immigration. Whereas the French rugby team incarnate rural France, with many white players from the south-west, the football team are drawn more from non-white suburbs of big cities. Many of today’s players grew up in poor immigrant families (often Muslim), then emigrated as teenagers to grow rich playing for foreign clubs. In short, they have never lived in the French mainstream.

The French hope is that this summer will be a rerun of 1998. Thuram says: “I think that people only ask for one thing: to love the French team. Football has the power to create a certain communion of emotions. You can go up to another person you don’t even know and share that joy. For me, that’s what football is above all.” And it’s just what France now needs.

Freedom in Florida: Libertarians gather 2016-05-31 | Espresso
Ten per cent of Americans describe themselves as libertarian, but they may not quite be Libertarian. Disaffected Democrats might share the Libertarians’ anti-establishment streak, but not the desire to abolish welfare. Anti-Trump Republicans might dream of abolishing taxes, but not binning restrictions on abortion. The two big parties have assembled their strange coalitions of ideas and interests for a reason.

Je suis circonflexe | The Economist
the French who have joined the protest might retort that for them, language is serious indeed: a typical criticism on Twitter read “simplification, glorification of mediocrity, sinking to the lowest common denominator”.

The best analogy outside spelling might be the demoting of Pluto from its status as a planet. Many of those who had hardly bothered to think about the icy rock-ball at the far edge of the solar system suddenly found a childhood memory tarnished, mnemonic devices now featuring a superfluous P at the end. Humans, it seems, are natural conservatives: even if Pluto really isn’t a planet, even if the circumflex really is useless most of the time, it is not about the thing itself. Human beings don’t like going back and rewriting old memories.
