Initium Media

Be careful with social media — employers are watching
The role social media plays in HR matters raises even bigger questions. Facebook and Twitter have been open for 11 years. That means a whole generation, now graduating into the workplace, has its entire history online forever, as preserved as an insect in amber.

The digital realm covers millennials’ exact geographical locations, their views, relationship history, consuming preferences, their social and work life. I am told that a determined stalker could discover how you vote, an approximation of your medical history, your financial and legal trails and much more.

Joe DiMaggio Babysat My Daughter at the Airport | Reader's Digest
She was very, very upset. She said, “I can’t believe you’ve let this family come apart. I can’t believe this child will grow up without a father.” (Which was never true and has never been true since.)

Lucy Kellaway: why we went back to school
The person who came closest to how I felt was Lara Agnew, a documentary film-maker. “I’ve spent my life commenting on the fabric of society,” she said. “I want to be in the fabric of society, not outside looking on.”

Many of the applicants had not set foot in a school since they attended one themselves 30 or 40 years earlier, and so were sent off for a week’s immersion. This weeded out all those who had a fond vision of themselves as Robin Williams in Dead Poets Society. It also got rid of those unsuited to the rigidity of school life. One man was told to leave after his first day — he had sat at the back of class checking his emails and then proceeded to go to sleep.

If nothing else, we will bring diversity to the staff room, where most teachers are youngish and female. By contrast, we are mostly oldish and two-thirds male — and stick out so much that various trainees were mistaken for Ofsted inspectors at the schools they visited. There is a delicious irony here: these corporate men have been used to being the ruling class all their professional life but now are going to be the persecuted minority.

Watching them, I realised what I am giving up to train to be a teacher, as well as income, time and autonomy: a life-long tendency towards cynicism. This has served me well for 32 years as a journalist, but now I fear that it is going to get in the way.

Millennials, This Is Why You Haven't Been Promoted

The solution is to outline exactly what you’re going to do. This requires preparation. Even if it’s a small task, think of it as a presentation. Schedule one meeting with your managers, present how you’re going to tackle this specific project/assignment, and get their approval on every bullet. Follow up explicitly confirming that you’ll do xyz. Then here’s the key part: don’t check in again until it’s done the way you agreed.

Surround yourself with and learn from inspiring people.

Transitioning out of academia
I have to admit I do miss aspects of the academic and research environment. I never thought I would say that, but I do. I miss the solitude; the ability to focus on a task; to really, really think about an issue; to identify a research question; to develop an hypothesis and then to test if it is true; and the opportunity to debate and discuss with like-minded peers and colleagues. It really is a unique environment.

Goldman Sachs Recasts Its Reputation to Woo Tech Talent
In recruiting programmers from elite universities, Wall Street runs up against the idea that Silicon Valley is the technological promised land.

“Whereas in other opportunities you might be considering, it is working one type of data or one type of application, we deal in hundreds of products in hundreds of markets, with thousands or tens of thousands of clients, every day, millions of times of day worldwide,” Afsheen Afshar, a managing director at Goldman Sachs, told the students.

At the Columbia event, the screen at the front of the room had a word cloud showing the cool fields — at least for computer scientists — that Goldman engineers work in, among them “machine learning,” “data mining” and “cloud computing.”

In 2007, for instance, 28.7 percent of M.I.T. graduating seniors took a job in finance and only 9.3 percent went to software companies. At graduation last year, those numbers had flipped, with 21.5 percent of graduates taking software jobs and only 11.8 percent going into finance.

“As soon as we start talking to the candidates about what our starting packages look like, the lifestyle questions about flip-flops and beanbags really start to go away,” he said.

My Life as a Retail Worker: Nasty, Brutish, and Cheap
Irritated by my tardiness, Stretch lectured me on time management, including an Orwellian principle found in retail: If you arrive on time for work, you’re already 10 minutes late. Showing up early is necessary, he said, so you can “get ready to hit the floor.”

Wealth: What is the best way for an engineer to get rich? - Quora
"Rich" is all relative but here are some ideas for a software engineer to become a millionaire in a reasonable time frame: 1. Do some research on which company in 2012 is the Microsoft in 1995, the Google in 2002, or the Facebook in 2006. Join that company. My calculated bets: 1) Pinterest(closest) 2) Quora(a bit early) 3)Dropbox (a bit late) 2. Join Google but get a Facebook offer at the same time so you get a great package from Google. Get the founder award at Google. You can make about 300K-400K a year at Google even without the founder award. Be frugal. You will be a millionaire in 5 years after tax and expenses. 3. Apply for Y Combinator and launch your startup with them. Work hard. Leverage their connections and marketing channels. Get acquired. Make some millions from the acquisition and some millions from the earn-out. 4. Join a high frequency trading hedge fund. You can make 500K - 1M a year. Millionaire in 3 years. The above scenarios assume you pass their interviews. So, make your self a very good engineer first!
