Emilia Clarke, of “Game of Thrones,” on Surviving Two Life-Threatening Aneurysms

But I kept at it. In school productions, I played Anita in “West Side Story,” Abigail in “The Crucible,” one of the witches in “Macbeth,” Viola in “Twelfth Night.” After secondary school, I took a gap year, during which I worked as a waitress and went backpacking in Asia. Then I started classes at the Drama Centre London to pursue my B.A. As fledgling actors, we studied everything from “The Cherry Orchard” to “The Wire.” I didn’t get the ingénue parts. Those went to the tall, willowy, impossibly blond girls. I got cast as a Jewish mother in “Awake and Sing!” You should hear my Bronx accent.

In those days, I thought of myself as healthy. Sometimes I got a little light-headed, because I often had low blood pressure and a low heart rate. Once in a while, I’d get dizzy and pass out. When I was fourteen, I had a migraine that kept me in bed for a couple of days, and in drama school I’d collapse once in a while. But it all seemed manageable, part of the stress of being an actor and of life in general. Now I think that I might have been experiencing warning signs of what was to come.

I could hardly catch my breath. I went back to the hotel, where some people invited me to a party on the roof. “I think I’m good!” I told them. Instead, I went to my room, ate Oreos, watched “Friends,” and called everyone I knew.

The “Game of Thrones” creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss have said that Daenerys Targaryen is a blend of Napoleon, Joan of Arc, and Lawrence of Arabia.

Thicker than blood: A young Chinese woman's coming of age - SupChina
Always careful about what I ate, she enforced an even stricter diet. Certain types of animal products must be avoided because they contained growth hormones. Some seeds and plants could only be consumed in small quantities because they stimulated the sexual organs, per traditional Chinese medicine. In addition to her belief that the flow of the womb drained the brain, my mother dreaded the approach of womanhood for her daughter, a perilous world filled with lurking eyes and wandering hands.

The only item my mother cleaned with a vengeance was our underwear. She rinsed them by hand, and she boiled them in water. The designated utensil was a large porcelain washbasin with a pair of mandarin ducks printed on the bottom next to the character for “double happiness.” The basin was a wedding gift for her and my father, typical of their time.

“Only boiling water can kill all the germs,” my mother explained her peculiar method. “That place must be kept clean, otherwise you will get diseases, and people will think you are a prostitute.”

Meet Hao Jingfang, author of "Folding Beijing," the dystopian science-fiction writer who advises China’s government — Quartz
When do you usually write in a day?

Five to seven o’clock in the morning. I barely write after work. In the evening I play with my daughter, give her a bath, read to her and get her to sleep. Usually I sleep from 11pm to 4am or 5am.

My daughter is under three, and is now sent to kindergarten. My mother lives at my apartment to take care of her most of the time. But she still needs her mother’s company more. I don’t want to separate her from me. Whatever I’m doing at home, she is always allowed to interrupt me.

Let’s talk about the new book you are working on.

It’s a sci-fi novel about China’s ancient civilization. The story is set in the future. It’s about people traveling back to archaeological sites to unveil history.

Archaeology is not able to fill gaps between separate dynasties. There are many gaps I can fill with my imagination. For example, what gives birth to Chinese ritual bronzes? Archaeological materials only show the bronzes became mature during the Shang and Zhou dynasties (1600-256 BC). There is no accumulation and development before that. I can make up lots of reason for that.

Finding Lena, the Patron Saint of JPEGs

About six months later, a copy of the issue turned up at the University of Southern California’s Signal and Image Processing Institute, where Alexander Sawchuk and his team happened to be looking for a new photograph against which to test their latest compression algorithm—the math that would make unwieldy image files manageable. Lena’s glossy centerfold, with its complex mixture of colors and textures, was the perfect candidate. They tore off the top third of the spread, ran it through a set of analog-to-digital converters, and saved the resulting 512-line scan to their Hewlett-Packard 2100.

as she told me her life story, recalling her trips from America to Sweden, her marriages and jobs, the lives of her children and grandchildren, it became abundantly clear that the Playboy episode and its aftermath is a curious footnote, a part of her life that she has been largely excluded from, if only because no one thought to tell her very much about it.

Japan’s Vegetable-Eating Men

Japanese men were spending about an hour a week on childcare and household duties, while women were spending 30 to 40 hours a week, numbers that had not shifted as the country had become more dependent on women’s labor outside the home. Japanese men were spending about an hour a week on childcare and household duties, while women were spending 30 to 40 hours a week, numbers that had not shifted as the country had become more dependent on women’s labor outside the home.

Not only are such men a large part of what has enabled Japan to dramatically increase the workforce participation of women in recent years (after lagging behind most developed countries since 2000, Japan shot past the US last year, with 76 percent of women now part of the labor force), but domestic bliss is increasingly becoming a viable alternative for those men who find themselves unable to secure a high-paying full-time job.

Just as the culture was expecting women to simply add work on top of full-time childcare and housework duties, men were being asked to just add involved parenting to an already-long—60 hours, in some cases—workweek.

Enter the IkuBoss. In 2015, the government launched a program targeted at shifting the workaholic mind-set of employers and bosses. Emerging alongside Prime Minister Shinzō Abe’s “work-style reform” proposal—which aims to decouple employees’ salaries from the number of hours they work, put a cap on overtime hours at 720 hours a year, and require companies to pay “regular” and “irregular” employees the same rate for the same work—IkuBoss intends to change the culture of work from the top down.

Letter of Recommendation Mess
Every time I observe a woman gliding agreeably through life like a stewardess on an endless flight, modestly dressed and smiling ruefully to deflect any presumption that her existence is anything other than morally and aesthetically impeccable, I’m reminded of the enormous pressure placed on those of us who aren’t men to construct an identity that falls within the limits of acceptable behavior. And I’m reminded of how readily these stifling restrictions permeate the physical spaces we create for ourselves.

Mary Beard Takes On Her Sexist Detractors | The New Yorker

In “The Fires of Vesuvius: Pompeii Lost and Found” (2008), she points out that the ancient city lacked zoning regulations, which meant that a blacksmith’s noisy shop could lie on the other side of the wall from a wealthy family’s frescoed dining room. Her deductive observation from the presence of tartar on the teeth of skeletons—that Pompeii was a city of bad breath—is a typical Beardian turn.

Beard does not wear makeup and she doesn’t color her abundant gray hair. She dresses casually, with minor eccentricities: purple-rimmed spectacles, gold sneakers. She looks comfortable both in her skin and in her shoes—much more preoccupied with what she is saying than with how she looks as she is saying it.

She is a frequent contributor to Radio 4, the British equivalent of NPR, offering audio essays on subjects as varied as dementia, the four-minute mile, and academic testing.

In China and India, men outnumber women on a massive scale. The consequences are far-reaching. - Washington Post

A combination of cultural preferences, government decree and modern medical technology in the world’s two largest countries has created a gender imbalance on a continental scale. Men outnumber women by 70 million in China and India.

China’s official one-child policy, in effect from 1979 to 2015

Another unintended result — urban housing prices are rising fast.

Around $10,000, Li reckons, will have to be paid to his future bride’s family, just to gain their approval for the engagement. A centuries-old tradition, the bride price in China is similar to a dowry elsewhere in the world, but paid from groom’s family to the bride’s parents — rather than the other way around.

How Digital Maps Have Changed What It Means to Be Lost
I was curious if others felt the same way, so I set about collecting more of these moments—memories of the last times people felt really, truly lost.

“I can sympathize with that romantic notion that wandering in an unfamiliar place is great because you never know what you might stumble on,” Mathis says. “But in practical terms, as a woman who often is out walking alone, I do have my guard up. I have my city face on. And the technology that we have now does make me feel like I can be self-sufficient almost anywhere. And that’s something I value.”

There are many ways to be lost. Some have declined due to technology; others are newly born. But in every situation, to be lost is to be vulnerable. Vulnerability is frightening, often dangerous, but it also breeds connection—with people, and with places. The maps people carry in their pockets can be a barrier to that connection, but they are also safety nets. And it’s easier to take a leap if you know there’s something at the bottom to catch you.

The Interpreter: A British crime drama bleeds into the real world
The researchers concluded that popular television shows’ portrayals of family life led to these changes by shifting public perceptions about the appropriate role of women.
Television isn’t new to Britain, of course. But in a world where media consumption is increasingly fragmented, popular shows are one of the few mass experiences left. That kind of shared understanding is rare, and it can be a powerful thing for politicians to take advantage of.

If Only Quoting Women Were Enough - The New York Times
And it can rankle readers, some of whom inevitably ask a variation of, “Isn’t that just more discrimination?”

This is the challenge of systemic gender bias. No one person can fix it, even with the benefit of a platform as powerful as The New York Times. But conscious efforts to correct for its effects can, at a glance, look unfair because the biases that privilege men, while far more systemic, are often less visible.

The Complicated History of Hoop Skirts - Racked
Despite Amelia Bloomer’s complacence, dress reform was just getting started; its juggernaut wouldn’t soar in earnest until World War I. Still, a compassionate, empathetic analysis of material culture demands that we abandon the outside view, the privilege of hindsight, to fully inhabit our forebears’ mores. The cage crinoline, imperfect and incrementalist as it was, signaled cultural changes all the more daring for their apparent frivolity. Women always have, and always will, asserted themselves through the avenues available to them. If the master’s tools cannot dismantle the master’s house, perhaps his clothes can do the job.

China’s mixed messages to working women

Nearly half of Chinese women enrol in tertiary education, compared with less than 40 per cent of men, according to the World Bank. While there is a gender gap in the workforce (63 per cent of women work versus 78 per cent of men) that difference is smaller than that in the US (56 per cent of women versus 76 per cent of men).

“We need companies on our side so we are not forcing our message down people’s throats,” said Virginia Tan, the co-founder of China’s first Lean In community. She left her job as a corporate lawyer two years ago to run Lean In China full time. “For us, it is a focus on personal professional development, innovation and investing in female talent, which are all in line with China’s national agenda.”

Sweden's Sexual Assault Crisis Presents a Feminist Paradox - Quillette
Previous studies (by now more than a decade old) have shown a large overrepresentation of immigrants, particularly from patriarchal societies in the Middle East and North Africa, among the suspects of sex crimes in Sweden. Overrepresentation of immigrants has been even higher when it comes to group rapes, especially with three or more assailants. According to an official study from 1996, immigrant males were 4.5 times as likely as Swedes to commit rape. Immigrants from Algeria, Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia were particularly overrepresented, being more than 20 times as likely to commit the same crime. In total, 53 percent of rape suspects were either first or second generation immigrants.

‘By the way, I’m a woman’: the truth about ambiguous names

When faced with ambiguity, most people think “man”, not “woman”. According to The Handbook of English Linguistics, “English linguistic convention has historically treated men as prototypical of the human species” — as evidenced by “Mr” being listed above “Mrs” or “Miss” on almost all registration forms, for example. This presumption of maleness extends to a well-documented tendency to assume male superiority in a professional context. Indeed, my name may have worked in my favour — and that’s the worrying bit.

This fictitious job applicant was called either “Jennifer” or “John”, but the CV itself never varied. The recruiters showed an overwhelming preference for “John”, offering him a salary 13 per cent higher than the average salary offered to “Jennifer”. What’s more, the female scientists reviewing these CVs were found to be just as guilty of bias as their male counterparts.

Fortunately, I do not have to take a male pseudonym in order to freely pursue a writing career, as many female writers have done historically — the Brontë sisters, George Eliot (Mary Anne Evans) and George Sand (Amantine-Lucile-Aurore Dupin) among them.

Opinion | Still No Dignity for Chinese Women

The birth control regime reaches beyond family life. The government forbids single women from using “assisted reproductive technology,” which includes the freezing of eggs and in vitro fertilization. This year the prominent Chinese actress Xu Jinglei said that she had gone to the United States to freeze her eggs. The particular discrimination faced by single women will not change under the two-child policy.

The web is now awash with promotional materials encouraging couples to have a second child, which in light of the recent exhortations to have only one child seems like a cruel joke.

« Que la première dame soit notre Marianne ! »

Were the First Artists Mostly Women?

Snow's study began more than a decade ago when he came across the work of John Manning, a British biologist who had found that men and women differ in the relative lengths of their fingers: Women tend to have ring and index fingers of about the same length, whereas men's ring fingers tend to be longer than their index fingers.

Hand stencils and handprints have been found in caves in Argentina, Africa, Borneo, and Australia. But the most famous examples are from the 12,000- to 40,000-year-old cave paintings in southern France and northern Spain. (See "Pictures: Hand Stencils Through Time.")

Ping pong showed similar results, with 33% of the male matches involving additional physical contact between the competitors while female matches showed none. France Has the Burkini Blues - The New York Times
A number of factors have turned France into the epicenter of the clash between extremist Islam and Western societies. They include the presence of Western Europe’s largest Muslim community, French participation in conflicts from the Middle East to Mali, the tensions deriving from France’s troubled colonial past (notably in Algeria), and, perhaps most of all, the Republic’s firm doctrine of laïcité, or secularism, designed to subsume all ethnic, racial, religious and other differences into French citizenship.

That said, it is also unacceptable to ban Zanetti’s burkini from beaches. A burkini is not in itself “a political project,” “a counter-society” or a symbol of women’s enslavement, as Valls argued. No, it is a choice of dress reflecting a religious belief protected under the French Constitution. If anything, it is the counter-bikini.

Often the choice to wear one has been imposed through forms of male domination sanctioned by certain readings of Islam and pervasive in societies like Saudi Arabia, but equally it may reflect a woman’s independently embraced identity. That is not for officials to decide. Inside the burkini lurk many different women’s journeys.

What makes train travel such an antidote to life’s stresses? | Aeon Essays
trains blurred the line between public and private. ‘Train travel requires people to do private things in public,’

And what’s fascinating about it is the possibility of being able to observe strangers. For women in particular who don’t have a lot of geographic mobility in urban spaces, riding on a train is as close as they can get to that flâneur experience of urban life – where you can sit and you can watch people and you can eavesdrop on conversations.’

When, several years ago, I returned to Russia after a long absence, I booked a 24-hour train journey for myself and my eight-year-old daughter from St Petersburg to Odessa in Ukraine. I wanted her to experience what I remembered: a whole day together, an uninterrupted passage of hours filled with books and conversations, an opportunity to spend time entirely on ourselves, by ourselves, and with ourselves.

Just like my mother more than 30 years earlier, I packed boiled eggs, tomatoes, cucumbers, bread, cheese and apples. We ate all three meals together without television, telephone or the internet. When the conductor brought tea – much like I remembered from the Sochi express times, with two cubes of sugar, in a classic railway cup – we drank it with sweets we bought at an intermediate stop, looked out of the window, and talked.

We are in a society that is so secularized that it no longer understands the reality of religiosity itself, Roy has said. It’s precisely there that we must make an effort, to normalize the Muslim reality as a religious reality and integrate it into the French cultural space.

Busting the baby brain myth: Why motherhood makes minds sharper | New Scientist
In adults, such rapid changes in grey matter normally occur only as a result of major events like illness or brain injury. It just goes to show that “pregnancy is not just some minor event”, as Kinsley puts it. “These changes represent a separate developmental period every bit as important as sexual differentiation or puberty.”

women in the last trimester of pregnancy tend to be much less stressed. This is down to a dampening of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, the system responsible for the flight-or-fight response. These changes appear to last beyond pregnancy, although for precisely how long remains unclear.

Starting in late pregnancy, women get better at detecting fear, anger and disgust in computer-generated faces, though their ability to detect surprise and positive emotions such as happiness doesn’t change.

corticotropin-releasing hormone – secreted by the hypothalamus – rises dramatically during pregnancy, which seems to play a role in making the mother-to-be feel less stressed. But an abnormal spike in its levels is associated with postnatal depression, Glynn has found.

Germany on the Brink
In the German case the important number here isn’t the country’s total population, currently 82 million. It’s the twentysomething population, which was less than 10 million in 2013 (and of course already included many immigrants). In that cohort and every cohort afterward, the current influx could have a transformative effect.

Presidential Race in Taiwan Reflects Women’s Rise in Politics
The contest contrasts sharply with the situation scarcely more than 100 miles away in mainland China, which considers the self-ruled Taiwan part of its territory. The mainland has had a dearth of female leaders despite a Communist Party ideology that emphasizes the importance of women to society. Only two of the country’s 25 Politburo members are women, and none have reached the top echelon of political power, the Politburo Standing Committee.

Ms. Tsai and Ms. Hung are markedly different in style. Ms. Tsai, who served as minister of Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council and as vice premier during the Chen Shui-bian administration, from 2000 to 2008, has degrees from Cornell University Law School and the London School of Economics. She has been described as shy for a politician, and when speaking in public, she sometimes comes across like a schoolteacher.

The sea women of Jeju
From more than 14,000 in the 1970s, the number of haenyeo has dwindled to fewer than 4,500 today.

The vast majority are aged over 50, with the oldest in their nineties. But, despite their age, they continue to perform feats beyond most women in their twenties — diving to depths of up to 20m, holding their breath for as long as two minutes at a time.

“If I weren’t diving, I’d just be growing potatoes,” she says. “I dived right through pregnancy, up to the ninth month.” This was normal practice, according to historians of Jeju, who record cases of haenyeo giving birth on boats during a day’s diving, and even strapping their young children to the mast while they worked.

Their financial independence is remarkable in a country where elderly poverty is a huge problem. Forty-nine per cent of South Koreans over 65 live on less than half the median income — the highest proportion in the international Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), a group of advanced economies. That has contributed to a nearly fivefold increase in the elderly suicide rate since 1990 to a level that is by far the highest of any developed country.

How a Chinese Billionaire Built Her Fortune

“In the Hunan language, we call women like her ‘ba de man,’ which means a person who dares to do what others are afraid to do,” said her cousin Zhou Xinyi, who helped her open the workshop and now serves on the Lens board. Along the way, Zhou Qunfei married her former factory boss, had a child and divorced. She later married a longtime factory colleague, who serves on the Lens board, and had a second child.

Yamato nadeshiko - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term "Yamato nadeshiko" is often used referring to a girl or shy young woman[6] and, in a contemporary context, nostalgically of women with "good" traits which are perceived as being increasingly rare.[7] However, Nadeshiko Japan is also widely used as the name for the Japanese national women's football team.[8]

Apart from a brief chat in the dressing room and the handshake after the match, tennis requires little contact between players.

Why the discrepancy? The obvious answer is that she is a very attractive girl, that she is marketable and has done a lot of winning, replies Eisenbud. The real answer, however, is that she is very savvy, she is a very smart businesswoman — and she understands return on investment. She understands that if Porsche or Evian are paying her a lot of money, the only way that money will keep on flowing is if she helps them with their goals and objectives.
