Why KFC Is Christmas Dinner In Japan

The official explanation from KFC is that a Christian kindergarten in Japan wanted to order KFC for its kiddy Christmas party. The school reportedly ask the KFC shop manager to dress up as Santa Claus for the party. He agreed, appearing at the party in full Santa gear, saying, “Merry Christmas” to the children’s delight. According to KFC, gradually, more and more schools ordered KFC for their holiday parties, and in 1974, KFC held its first special Christmas meal campaign. Decades later, KFC’s Christmas has become an annual mainstay, with people growing up eating the fried chicken during the holidays and naturally associating it with Christmas.

Memories of Thanksgivings Abroad and In Between

I remember tweeting into the void about Brussels sprouts and cranberry sauce on the morning of my first Thanksgiving abroad. Nobody who might have cared was up yet.

In it, she writes about realizing, after becoming a foreign correspondent, that the picture she had of America hadn’t been complete—that one hadn’t seen the whole picture of America until one had left the national borders, because the whole picture included foreign interventions, cultural exports, and various modes of thought that were invisible at home.

The agonizing particulars of the Presidential race, which were doubly nerve-wracking to watch from afar, had been hard to explain to inquisitive Spaniards. I craved American company—to be able to dish and spar with some compatriots in the know. So when a group of expats invited me to dinner, I accepted, bringing a bottle of Rioja.

All of these celebrations offered, and birds ritually consumed, have led me to a single, significant conclusion: If it’s true, as my colleague Calvin Trillin long ago suggested, that everything exotic that isn’t chicken tastes like chicken—rattlesnake, ostrich, etc.—the one thing that can be said for certain, on Thanksgiving, is that no matter what you do to it, a turkey will always taste like a turkey.

A Brooklyn Gospel Choir Goes to China | ChinaFile
This was the first of many surprises for the choir as it traversed China. Haye’s experience illuminates the contradictions and idiosyncrasies of the ongoing surge in spirituality in the nation of 1.4 billion people.

Amidst fast-paced economic development, a new generation in China is seeking more from life than material pleasure alone, and some are turning to religion. Christian fellowships are growing fastest among all faiths, at about 7 percent a year.

At this rate of expansion, in a few years China’s estimated 70 million Christians will outnumber members of the Communist Party, whose 90 million head count grew by just over 1 percent in 2015.

“I thought of communism, I thought of people being deprived or people not having personal identity or people having boundaries. I thought that communism meant that the government was oppressive,” said Haye.

It may be, Haye said, “But what I saw was people that, if given lemons, they made lemonade. They adapt.”

“We don’t think too much about how the government will treat us. We just have peace and joy and God. We just do everything we must do.”

Unspunnen: the festival of Swissness held every 12 years

In the US, I can’t even go for a swim or to the gym without signing my life away. But in Switzerland, I can pick up a boulder — up to 83kg — and hurl it (barefoot, if desired) while a large audience sits several feet away. More than teaching me about proper Swiss stone-throwing form, it teaches me about the Swiss culture of trust and personal responsibility.

Its aim was to heal growing political tension between the city dwellers of Bern and the farmers of the highlands to the south — areas recently amalgamated into one canton. The organisers, four influential citizens of Bern including the mayor and chief magistrate, hoped to emphasise shared heritage over power struggles and to cultivate the “mutual goodwill and gracious unity to which for centuries our fatherland has owed its strength, its glory and its good fortune”.

On my way to peruse the food tents, I hear what sounds like a very depressed cow — a tourist close by trying to blow an alpenhorn.

I opt for rösti, made with day-old cooked potatoes, butter, salt and milk, and considered by many Swiss German speakers to be the national dish. The country’s French speakers would argue for fondue but, in the true festival spirit of unity, both are available here.

The men wear black pants, black hats adorned with flowers and black velvet vests embroidered with edelweiss. The women are in various colourful dirndls, billowy white shirts, white tights and black shoes. The costumes differ slightly according to the wearers’ home region, and there are over 400 variations.

every 12 years, that stories of unadulterated Swiss culture embark on another world tour via Interlaken’s most famous export — the tourist.
