How to Mount Removable Drives and Network Locations in the Windows Subsystem for Linux
Network locations can be mounted in one of two ways. If you map a network drive to a drive letter, you can mount it using the same options as above. This would give you an opportunity to easily sign into the network share and enter your credentials in File Explorer. For example, if your mapped network drive is F:, you could run the following commands to mount it:

sudo mkdir /mnt/f

sudo mount -t drvfs F: /mnt/f

A Virtual-Reality Program to Conquer the Fear of Public Speaking | The New Yorker

Glossophobia, the fear of public speaking

He showed me how to use the program to teleport across cavernous halls and land inches away from strangers, where I could admire rogue gray hairs on their heads and fine webs of wrinkles on their slacks. I was drawn to a woman sitting in a middle row of a banquet-hall audience. She appeared to be miserably bored, as if waiting for a train that would never arrive. She had dun-colored hair, worn in a bun that did not suit her. I reached out to touch it. She blinked, and my hands disappeared from view, sinking into the depth of her head. I backed off and marvelled at the sight of my alternate self’s hands, which were covered with barely detectable freckles and hair follicles. Marshall helped me adjust the size to more closely resemble my own.

I styled everyone in the program in casual, just-stopping-by-the-bookstore clothing, adjusted the gender ratio to include more women, and set the audience rudeness level as high as I could. Now everyone assembled was checking their phones, crossing their arms, or yawning theatrically. I spotted kindness on only one face. Ned, as I decided to call him, was a balding man in a gray cardigan. His hopeful eyebrows told me that he’d been through a lot.

Even though I knew that I was alone in my kitchen, in the middle of the day, and that Ned and his rude friends were illusory, my nerves kept tripping me up. A man who was seated near me at a conference table picked at some lint on his trousers, and I lost my footing and had to start the recording over. Again and again, I recited my spiel over a soundtrack of coughing and an occasional unsilenced mobile device. When I made it all the way to the end of my remarks, the crowd granted me a lackluster round of applause.

Thanks to a real-time “heat map” that tracks a user’s visual attention, I could plainly see that my gaze favors the left side of the room. I watched the words “very” and “so” rise faithfully from my mouth like bubbles.

My avatar—who had my round face and slumped posture—appeared during the playbacks. From my position at the edge of the imaginary room, all I could do was watch her ape my body movements and listen to the recording of my speech. The program designates a grade at the end of each playback, factoring in gaze distribution, pace, pauses, reliance on filler words, and hand activity. Five days in, my scores still hovered around seventy per cent. (My dead-fish hands earned consistent fourteens.)

But, in the group settings, Ned was always somewhere to be found, soothing me with a look of compassionate distress.

While the other authors spoke, I located a young woman whose wide eyes and bobbing head suggested a sympathetic soul—a new, real-life Ned. When it was my turn to speak, I focussed on her and stepped into the light.

How to read more in 2019 | Financial Times

Read abundantly. Scatter books around the house in tempting piles, like bowls filled with cookies laid out on coffee tables, and in verandas and porches. “I am reading six books at once, the only way of reading,” Virginia Woolf wrote in a letter in August 1928: “Since, as you will agree, one book is only a single unaccompanied note, and to get the full sound, one needs 10 others at the same time.” That’s the best reason you have to read more next year. It’s never only about the numbers; it’s about the pleasure, the thousand little discoveries.

Exchange contacts and iCloud | MacRumors Forums
#10
Hello. I successfully moved contacts in bulk using the following approach:

1. Export contacts from Outlook (exchange on the back end) to CSV file.
2. Import contacts into gmail account using the CSV file.
3. Export contacts from gmail to VCF (Vcard) file.
4. Import contacts into iCloud using the VCF file. This is done via icloud.com.

Note: this is not a sync operation. This will get your contacts in bulk saved to iCloud.

How to Import Video to Your iPad or iPhone
Step 4: Rename the Files With 8-Character File Names
Now that you have the video files in the right folder, you’ll probably have to rename them. The new file name—and yes this is bizarre—must be exactly eight characters long, plus the file extension (“.MP4"). For example, my Sony camera names video files something like “C0300.MP4,” but I have to rename them to something like “clip0001.MP4". I do not fully understand why this is necessary (if you do, hit me up), but it is.

GTD in 15 minutes – A Pragmatic Guide to Getting Things Done
The weekly review:
Make sure each project has at least one next action. Make sure that each action on your next actions list is actually something you want or need to do if you have the time during the coming week. If not, move it (and/or the project it belongs to) to your someday/maybe list or—if you don’t think you will ever do it—remove it completely. (Be honest with yourself.)
Look through your someday/maybe list and see if some projects/actions should be moved to the list of current projects/the next actions list. If creating a new project on your projects list, make sure to figure out its next physical, visible action and put it on the next actions list as well.

iPad Pro for PDF organization, highlighting, and annotation in Grad School : ipad
Where the iPad really shines is in multi-document PDF annotation. The only two serious choices here are LiquidText and Margin Note. I prefer the latter, but it has a higher learning curve. (There is also a new app called Flexcil, which is a bit easier to learn but not as powerful.) When I'm writing a legal memo, I do a bunch of research on my computer, find papers, legal decisions, articles, etc., and then dump them into a single project in MarginNote. Then I create a vague outline/mind map of topics for the memo in MarginNote, and then start to read all the references through, adding annotations and linking them to particular parts in the outline. If I see new topics as I read, I amend/refine the outline. At the end, you have all the source annotations and notes cross-linked to the actual outline of the memo you're going to write. It's a huge time-saver.

Hardliners Learn That Democracy Can Pay Off - Bloomberg
The big innovation in authoritarian governance has been this: subsequent autocratic leaders, most of all in China, have found ways of both liberalizing and staying in power.

A second development was when authoritarian leaders realized that absolute prohibitions on free speech were counterproductive, and they learned how to manage an intermediate solution.

These days, the Communist Party monitors public opinion closely, to learn what people are unhappy about (e.g., forced resettlements, pollution), so those problems can be ameliorated, or at least the government can position its failings appropriately.

How to Read to Remember - A Guide to Not Forgetting What You've Read | JamesStuber.com
Some questions to ask while note-taking
Where can you apply this idea to your own life?
Do you agree with the author?
Can you think of an example relating to this?
You’ve written a note. Mark the page with a sticky flag or dog-ear it for access later.

At the end of every chapter, summarize the chapter in your own thoughts. Just a few sentences will do.

Synthestize Your Notes
It’s a week later. Your calendar is telling you it’s time to copy down your book notes. Open a text editor and get typing.

You can either flip through the whole book or just hop between your marked pages. A lot of passages you marked as interesting will seem trite or obvious. Skip those. Everything else that’s still interesting, type it up.

If an idea spans multiple paragraphs, try to distill it down to a sentence or two.

Reformat your notes into actionable items.

Now, summarize the whole book in a short paragraph.

Congratulations! You’ve got a beautiful set of book notes.

Why some countries come together, while others fall apart | Aeon Essays

A comparison between Switzerland and Belgium, two countries of similar size, with a similar linguistic composition of the population, and comparable levels of economic development, provides an example. In Switzerland, civil society organisations – such as shooting clubs, reading circles and choral societies – developed throughout the territory during the late 18th and first half of the 19th century. They spread evenly throughout the country because modern industries emerged across all the major regions, and because Switzerland’s city-states lacked both the capacity and the motivation to suppress them. In Belgium, by contrast, Napoleon, as well as the Dutch king who succeeded him, recognised the revolutionary potential of such voluntary associations, and suppressed them. Even more importantly, the associations that did exist in Belgium were confined to the more economically developed and more educated French-speaking regions and segments of the population.

In 1831, when Belgium became independent of the kingdom of the Netherlands, most of the new rulers of the country had long been members of these French-speaking associational networks. Without giving it much thought, they declared French the official language of the administration, army and judiciary. Despite forming a slight demographic majority, those who spoke only Flemish were not part of these networks, and were therefore excluded from the central government. Until the end of the 19th century, the Flemish were ruled as an internal colony of Francophone Belgium. Early nation-building failed, the language divide became heavily politicised during the 20th century, and the country is now close to breaking apart.

Generations of political ties across linguistic divides allowed nationalist intellectuals and politicians to imagine the Han nation as multilingual, but ethnically homogenous.

Supporting civil society organisations can lead to backlash against foreign influence and political interference. The recent crackdown on foreign-funded NGOs in many eastern European countries is just one example of the risks run by a strategy of cultivating civil society organisations from outside. In the long run, however, such organisations help to provide a political infrastructure to establish ties across ethnic divides and move toward national political integration. A consistent and long-term strategy, such as that pursued by Germany’s political foundations or the Soros foundation, might still be the best way to help citizens connect with each other based on a shared cause, rather than shared ethnicity.

The lucid dreaming playbook: how to take charge of your dreams | Aeon Ideas
It takes a bit of practice, but if you’re lucky you might even have a lucid dream using MILD on your first night. If you do become aware that you’re dreaming, it’s important to stay calm, since intense emotions can trigger a premature awakening. And if the dream starts to fade or seems unstable, you can try rubbing your hands together vigorously from within the dream. It sounds strange, but this strategy works by flooding the brain with sensations from within the dream, which decreases the chance of becoming aware of your sleeping physical body, and waking up.
