With the iPhone 7, Apple Changed the Camera Industry Forever - The New Yorker
The distinct business advantage that Apple has achieved thanks to its hardware is the sheer volume of iPhone sales, which justifies the big spending on the specialized chips that make that hardware so powerful. The new image processor is a perfect example. It can spread the cost of that investment in chips over hundreds of millions of iPhones. In comparison, the falling sales of stand-alone cameras have hampered the ability of camera companies to innovate and spend on core technologies. Given that hardware and software are equally important today, Apple’s advances in both areas makes it difficult for anyone to beat the company in photography for the masses. You can see why the camera companies are doomed.

Why Microsoft Word must Die - Charlie's Diary
I use a variety of other tools, from Scrivener (a program designed for managing the structure and editing of large compound documents, which works in a manner analogous to a programmer's integrated development environment if Word were a basic text editor) to classic text editors such as Vim.

"
To me, all hate talk around Word is similar to the hate talk around Perl. You have a tool, which grew from simple and understandable by any user to one encompassing all possible uses, a Gatling gun on tracks shooting Swiss army chainsaws, and then you complain that people are using it wrong. Because there are 10 ways to achieve the same superficially similar results, and the right one is not the most obvious.

Most people expressing hate do not seem to know, but you can write consistent, well-formatted Word document (e.g. PhD thesis or manuscript, I do not have experience of writing actual books) with figure, equation and table tracking using 4 or 5 styles — and you will get a nicely formatted table of contents as a bonus.

You will be the only person in the lab working this way, OK. But unlike programming code, the documents are merged easily — and you can enforce your styles upon other people's content without losing "glyph-level" formatting like superscripts, subscripts and this small caps D in the middle of alpha-D-glycopyranose.

I would possibly prefer to write my scientific work in LaTeX — but to use LaTeX for chemistry means having balls of steel, because you get most of problems without most of the benefits. LaTeX chemistry community is notoriously small, and it was NOT created with this task in mind. And yes, 95% journals will not accept your manuscript, and 90% of colleagues will not know what to do with the files you send. Even less will they want to connect to your Subversion repo to do collaborative editing.

Generally, in my opinion, until the time of weak AIs as personal secretaries comes, anything killing Word will become a Word itself. It is inconsistent (crazy and bloated, in other words) because documents reflect many different types of work - and all people doing different work have to somehow exchange the editable results. I do not see any ways to avoid this internal problem.

SelfControl
SelfControl is a free and open-source application for Mac OS X (10.5 or above) that lets you block your own access to distracting websites, your mail servers, or anything else on the Internet. Just set a period of time to block for, add sites to your blacklist, and click "Start." Until that timer expires, you will be unable to access those sites--even if you restart your computer or delete the application.

You Can Improve Even If the Software Hasn't - Jiving Jackalope - For Apple geeks, designers, productivity nerds, consumers of all things Mac/iOS, and lovers of perfectionism
Shawn Blanc:

The longer I use my computer, the less and less I enjoy tinkering. I prefer to lock in with a handful of world-class applications and learn them inside and out. Such has been the case with Yojimbo over the past 3 years.“

But there always comes a time…

Leaving an app you know well is always a tough call. You don’t always leave because there are greener pastures. Sometimes you leave one for another because it’s about sharpening yourself. The app may not be improved upon, but you can be with a new take on your workflow.

K2pdfopt
If you're not getting what you want out of k2pdfopt, other utilities may be useful as alternatives to or in conjunction with k2pdfopt, but be sure to "check under the hood" of k2pdfopt--it has many options that make it useful as a generic tool to manipulate PDF files (see my k2pdfopt help pages). Similar utilities to k2pdfopt are PaperCrop (review here), PDFRead, Cut2Col (converts 2-column PDFs to 1-column using an intuitive GUI, written in Java), and SoPDF (open-source PDF-to-Sony reader app written in C++, command-line based). Cut2Col, SoPDF, and, PaperCrop (as of v0.51) all add cropping directives to the PDF file so that all of the original contents are still in the PDF file (in text form and searchable if they started that way)--they are just custom cropped on each new page. K2pdfopt now has this same native PDF output option as of v1.60. Jpdftweak is an excellent "swiss army knife" for PDF files that I use to extract or merge pages from different PDF files. Or try running k2pdfopt with the -mode copy option to optimize scanned PDFs or convert DJVU files to PDF. Briss and PDF Scissors are open-source PDF cropping apps. Calibre is a free, professional mobi-book organizer and converter. PdfMasher is a PDF text-to-mobi converter that claims to be smarter than calibre (or at least to give the user more control over the conversion). The Big List of Free Kindle Tools was posted by freewaregenius.com on 8-28-11.

How I use Hazel
Takes any document that I write for my weblogs and puts them in the appropriate folders, even if I just save them in my Documents folder. It also organizes them by weblog type, year and month based on the prefix I give it in the file name (LH for Lifehack, VM for this weblog, EVM for Eventualism, etc.), and then Hazel looks at the date the file was created and puts them in a pre-existing folder for the year and month or if there is no folder for the year and/or month it creates the folder(s) and then puts the file in it.
Moves my invoices and receipts in a similar fashion as above, allowing me to easily deal with my income and expenses throughout the year.
Puts images into iPhoto for me as I save them.
Imports all of my saved PDFs into Evernote.

Hazel is a must-have app if you’re ready to level up your productivity on the Mac. Like some of the higher-end productivity apps (such as OmniFocus), Hazel can be as powerful as you want it to be but as simple as you need it to be. While it may not be easy to wrap your head around, there are plenty of folks out there who can help make that happen for you.
