Initium Media

The Toxic Saga of the World’s Greatest Fish Market
Tsukiji is the most exalted fish market on earth, the sort of humbling place that causes the likes of globally worshipped god-chef René Redzepi to deem it one…

Is your commute worth the pain? The real cost of getting to work

When suburbs sprawl out too far and fail to stay compact, he says, then “even if [the authorities] wanted to provide good public transport services, it will end up more and more costly.”

A $1,000 Day in Tokyo for $100
Sushi? Check. Cherry blossoms? Check. But also a sprawling subway system and a baseball game.

When I returned at noon, I was treated to the best bowl of shoyu (soy sauce-based) ramen I’d ever eaten. The broth was deep, intense and slightly sweet. The accompaniments — soft-boiled egg, bamboo shoots and pork slices — were done perfectly. The basic ramen bowl at Tsuta is 950 yen — I paid a total of 1,250 for three extra slices of pork.

Slime Mold Grows Network Just Like Tokyo Rail System | WIRED
The researchers then borrowed simple properties from the slime mold’s behavior to create a biology-inspired mathematical description of the network formation. Like the slime mold, the model first creates a fine mesh network that goes everywhere, and then continuously refines the network so that the tubes carrying the most cargo grow more robust and redundant tubes are pruned.

Fricker points out that such a malleable system may be useful for creating networks that need to change over time, such as short-range wireless systems of sensors that would provide early warnings of fire or flood. Because these sensors are destroyed when disaster strikes, the network needs to efficiently re-route information quickly. Decentralized, adaptable networks would also be important for soldiers in battlefields or swarms of robots exploring hazardous environments, Fricker says.

Everyday Usability in Japan (Part 3)

Most streets in Japan don’t have names, however the blocks between streets are numbered

Buildings within a block are also numbered in order in which they were historically built

The Shy, Discreet Energy of Tokyo
Delano first travelled to Japan in 1993. He has spent most of the past two decades in Tokyo, documenting the city. “The megalopolis, jam-packed with shy, discreet people, creates an eccentric energy unlike any city on earth,” Delano wrote to me. He records this energy to create a collection of visual evidence that will offer future generations insight into the daily life of postmodern Japan. His vignette-style framing and use of black-and-white film recalls documentary photography at the turn of the twentieth century, and is a deliberate nod to the original, purely documentary purpose of the medium.

Tasting Tokyo, Guided by a Chef
Tokyo, a city Mr. Kinch first visited in 1989 and returns to regularly, is, he said, “the greatest eating city in the world.”

“It’s pretty hard to top the quality of food and the amount of restaurants and the diversity of styles that goes on there,” he said.

“It’s really hard to find bad food there,” he added.
