Trump knew of Flynn Russia phone call issues 'weeks ago' - BBC News
President Donald Trump knew weeks ago there were problems with Michael Flynn's Russia phone calls, a White House spokesman has said.
The president was told by the Justice Department at the end of January that Mr Flynn may have misled US officials and the public, said Sean Spicer.
He was asked to quit three weeks later due to an "erosion of trust".
Republicans have joined congressional calls for an investigation into Mr Flynn's contacts with Russia.
Mr Flynn was also reportedly questioned by FBI agents in his first days as national security adviser, according to US media.

How the Brexit vote unleashed a mutiny against the old order | Politics | The Guardian
But the revolution that had delivered Brexit, driven in large part by white working-class votes, was sweeping all before it in the most unpredictable way – careers and ambitions, along with what had seemed the safest of assumptions. The aftershocks of the referendum were wreaking havoc with the old system. //&! How bad can Brexit be if it has made bankers think about inequality? [...] Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BAML) immediately called Brexit the “biggest electoral riposte yet to [the] age of inequality”. A warning to Gove and Johnson - we won’t forget what you did | Jonathan Freedland | Opinion | The Guardian
He didn’t believe a word of his own rhetoric, we know that now. His face last Friday morning, ashen with the terror of victory, proved it. That hot mess of a column he served up on Monday confirmed it again: he was trying to back out of the very decision he’d persuaded the country to make. And let’s not be coy: persuade it, he did. Imagine the Leave campaign without him. Gove, Nigel Farage and Gisela Stuart: they couldn’t have done it without the star power of Boris.

BBC Radio 5 live - In Short, Heseltine: Boris has created 'greatest constitutional crisis in modern times'
The Conservative grandee and former leadership contender Lord Heseltine has launched a scathing attack on Boris Johnson saying he has created the "greatest constitutional crisis in modern times" and added the former London mayor has "ripped the (Conservative) party apart". Mr Heseltine, a former Deputy Prime Minister, said there is now a "great gaping hole in the future of Britain's decisions makers" as well as investors from all over the world. Michael Gove delivered the biggest blow to Boris Johnson’s career yet | Matthew d’Ancona | Opinion | The Guardian
[ on purpose leaked? making it show like an accident cc auto-complete gone wrong ... to the right person at the end that it ends up in the papers! ] Yesterday’s leaked email from Gove’s wife, the journalist Sarah Vine, hinted that all was not well in Borisland. In the message, she reminded her husband that his presence on the ticket was intended to reassure press barons who did not warm to Johnson. In return, she said, Boris must give “SPECIFIC assurances” to Gove. One surmises that those assurances were not forthcoming – or that yesterday’s “crucial meetings”, referred to in the email, yielded additional problems.

Michael Gove the 'Lord Macbeth' of the Commons, says Alex Salmond (From Herald Scotland)
Alex Salmond has mocked the leadership divisions plaguing Labour and the Conservatives by calling for MPs to spend a week debating "political backstabbing".

The former first minister of Scotland described Labour MPs as "rank amateurs" in their attempts to dislodge Jeremy Corbyn when compared with Michael Gove's bid to become the next Tory prime minister.

Mr Salmond labelled Justice Secretary Mr Gove as "Lord Macbeth" for having "dispatched" Prime Minister David Cameron before knocking Boris Johnson out of the Tory leadership race.

What next for the Conservative Party?
This has been a seismic rebellion against the establishment.
It is a cry from thousands of people who felt angry and alienated. More than half the voters rejected all the pleadings from the president of the United States, the head of the IMF, and countless world leaders.
In the end, gut and instinct trumped all the arguments about economic turmoil and warnings of economic collapse. In huge and unprecedented numbers the Labour vote broke for Leave. [...] The prime minister has underlined that there will be no change for EU citizens living in this country or British citizens in the EU. [...] Campaign scars [ 'it was all just about Brexit Campaign' ABOUT TRYING TO SAVE FACE ... "my right honourable colleague" ... always polite and knigge. ] Committed Europeans among Conservative MPs may question their future in party. The new leader must not only unite a bitterly divided party, but also successfully oversee complex and sensitive negotiations with the rest of Europe. Academy trust lauded by Cameron in 'serious breaches' of guidelines
Investigation into Perry Beeches academy trust finds serious concerns about financial management, control and governance [...] An academy trust singled out for praise by David Cameron and both current and former Conservative education secretaries has been given a financial notice to improve, after an investigation found “serious breaches” of guidelines.

Government reports raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest involving Perry Beeches academy trust and companies linked to some of its senior administrators. They also found problems with the number of pupils declared as eligible for free school meals. [...] The previous year, Gove was told the Conservative party conference: “There are some amazing schools in Birmingham, there are some great independent schools, there are some great grammar schools, but I have to say the best schools in Birmingham are Perry Beeches I and Perry Beeches II.”

The current education secretary Nicky Morgan has also spoken favourably about the trust.

Hey Britain – Your Kids Have Just Been Privatised
"Thatcher said the problem with socialism is that you run out of other people money. Henry VIII will tell you the problem with crony capitalism is you eventually run out of other people’s assets to sell." [...] In George Osborne’s mercurial March 2016 budget he showed his own Machiavellian sleight of hand. He is now seen as a politician whose leadership ambitions come before the welfare of the British people. Osborne’s allegiance is to The City not the country. When he and Peter Mandelson holidayed on financier Nat Rothschild’s yacht do you think they talked about free school meals and increasing the economic opportunities of the people in Grimsby? [...] Look at his actions and we see that one of Osborne’s aims is to reinstate the class divisions that began to ebb away with socially progressive policies. This last budget sought to weave a line into the fabric of society between the haves and have-nots. [...] We are at the end of the debt cycle and there’s nowhere else to go. [...] This is not the budget for the next generation of young people. This is the budget for the next generation of rent-seekers, moneymen and crony capitalists.

BBC Radio 5 live - In Short, Is the UK’s 'superficial' maths teaching style making us fall behind?
According to Andreas Schleicher of the Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development, children in the UK are falling behind in maths, due to a ‘superficial’ teaching style based on memorising facts, rather than understanding mathematical concepts.

Mathematician and co-author of Maths for Mums and Dads, Rob Eastaway thinks that “good ways of teaching are problem solving and real world context.”

When teaching 9 and 10 year olds he uses maths and magic, playing number games with the children which makes them “excited…they want to know how, explore and investigate”.

Every English school to become an academy, ministers to announce | Education | The Guardian
Education bill, set to be published within days, will take every single school in England out of local government control, Legislation to turn every school in England into an academy independent of local authority control will be unveiled in the budget on Wednesday. Draft leglislation, to be published possibly as early as Thursday, will begin the process of implementing a pledge made by David Cameron in his conference speech last autumn. The prime minister said his “vision for our schooling system” was to place education into the hands of headteachers and teachers rather than “bureaucrats”. [...] accountability and oversight falls on to Whitehall alone. [...] “no evidence to suggest that academisation in and of itself leads to school improvement”. [...] Concerns have already been raised about whether there would be enough good sponsors to take on schools.

There is a “serious danger” that severe budget cuts will mean that schools will not be able to maintain their current standards of education, headteachers have warned. Secondary school places for all 'undeliverable', councils warn - BBC News
[ planning taken out of hands of councils ] [ first the teachers strike (2014), then the doctors strike (2015/2016) - bit.ly/1T3QTfc ] The legal duty of councils in England to ensure that every child has a school place could soon become undeliverable, local authorities have warned. With a population bulge about to hit secondary schools, councils want powers to open new maintained schools and to compel academies to expand. Thousands of children are due to hear on Tuesday which secondary school they will attend from September. However the government says the warning amounts to "scaremongering". The population bulge which has put primary schools under pressure will start hitting secondary schools this year, according to official figures. Last year councils had to provide 2,740,000 secondary school places, but this will rise to 3,287,000 by 2024, the figures predict.

Should Ofsted get a US boss? - BBC News
In particular, they are considering candidates who have been involved in the charter school movement, state-funded independent schools, with a similar ideological DNA to academies and free schools in England. The big impact of charter schools has been in the most deprived urban areas, credited with re-energising schools that had been in a state of chronic decline. It's a claim rejected by their opponents, particularly in US teachers' unions, who say that the successful glitz and PR around charter schools is not backed up by any significant long-term advantage. Some charter schools do well, some do badly... like any other type of school, they argue. The current mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, has been accused by charter school groups of putting up "roadblocks" to their expansion. Bloomberg EIC outlines editorial vision in wake of cuts | Poynter.
[In your clients interest.] After a day of layoffs that claimed dozens of journalists from the ranks of Bloomberg’s massive reporting and editing corps, Editor-in-Chief John Micklethwait [ex-The Economist] called the departures a painful necessity intended on making the company stronger. [...] “Our purpose is to be the definitive ‘chronicle of capitalism’ – to capture everything that matters in global business and finance,” Micklethwait wrote.[...] "So if you are not intrigued by how people make money, or are inclined to sneer at those who are good at it, or yearn to practice “gotcha journalism” on investment bankers simply because they’ve chosen to be bankers, Bloomberg is probably the wrong place for you..." [...] The layoffs, which come after months of tumultuous relations between Bloomberg’s D.C. bureau and its New York office, have been read as a sign of decreasing editorial ambitions in Washington.

Kara Swisher has lost. | PandoDaily
As Fortune’s Dan Primack points out, as part of Vox, Re/Code now has investors in common with “Square, Uber, Dropbox, Spotify, Instacart, Jawbone, Lookout, Flipkart, etc.” We can argue — and I do, obviously — that having investors in common with companies you cover, or even having investors you cover, is a conflict that can be managed with fierce reporting and clear disclosures. The best example I can offer is that Pando has investors in common with both Uber and Secret. The Bebo Lawsuit, and the Tragedy of Departed Founders Who Can’t Let Go | PandoDaily
In my early twenties, as I’ve written before in painful detail, I was kicked out of several companies that I co-founded. Like after any relationship gone sour, I decided the best approach was to simply move on and never look back. (Note: I was less good following that advice when actual relationships went sour). Really that’s the only sensible approach. To many entrepreneurs, the company that made their name and fortune is like a first-born child. Suddenly finding oneself no longer intimately involved in its upbringing is impossibly difficult to deal with, especially when its new parents are — to one’s own mind at least — mistreating it. But there’s a difference between a child and a company: You can put a price on a company. And many entrepreneurs, including Michael Birch have done precisely that.

The following is an excerpt from Michelle Alexander’s book The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness. - "Today it is perfectly legal to discriminate against criminals in nearly all the ways that it was once legal to discriminate against African-Americans. Once you’re labeled a felon, the old forms of discrimination— employment discrimination, housing discrimination, denial of the right to vote, denial of educational opportunity, denial of food stamps and other public benefits and exclusion from jury service — are suddenly legal. ...We have not ended racial caste in America; we have merely redesigned it." - Michelle Alexander

I only hope Michael Schumacher pulls through so that he can see all the nice things people are saying about him - Telegraph
For years Michael was the perfect pantomime villain, particularly in this country; German, of course, ruthlessly efficient, ultra-aggressive. Whereas previous greats such as Sir Jackie Stewart or Juan Manuel Fangio left the door open to their rivals when racing, for fear of making what could easily have been fatal contact, Michael went all out in his pursuit of victory. Sometimes he overstepped the mark – Jerez in 1997 and Rascasse in 2006 spring to mind – and those indiscretions made him unpalatable to the sporting purist. He was marked down by some, including me, as a tainted champion. But you cannot argue with his achievements.
