Catalonia independence referendum: Spain's bad handling is a lesson for the world - The Washington Post
In Western Europe alone there are independence movements eager to bring about their own break with central governments. They, too, are watching closely.

In Spain’s Basque Country, the fate of Catalonia is of great interest. But there are countless others keeping tabs. From Denmark’s Faroe Islands to Belgium’s independence-minded Flanders, from France’s Corsica to Italy’s wealthy Padania, groups and regions across Europe are weighing what joins them and what separates them from the countries to which they belong. After all, the nation-state is a relatively recent invention. Every place has its own history.

Neoliberalism has taken this internalized self-blame and turbocharged it. Plugging in through clothing: How children’s clothes influence perception and affective practices in day careThe Sociological Review - Elina Paju, 2017
Through the analysis of everyday practices of wearing clothing, clothes are seen as connectors. They enhance, diminish or expand possibilities for perception, action and affective practices in which children engage, thereby altering the children’s ways of being. The article proposes that the wearing of clothing plays a role in constituting selfhood outside of mere representations.

I’m glad a gay man of colour will be Irish prime minister, even if I abhor his politics | Emer O’Toole | Opinion | The Guardian
Yes, there are reasons to celebrate Leo Varadkar becoming leader of Fine Gael. But he is an austerity-championing neoliberal who is against reproductive rights [...] But Varadkar is a conservative. Left-leaning folk in Ireland are hoarse trying to explain to the faraways that, yes, we understand the optics – but this is Ireland, land of the topsy-turvy, where the election of a gay person of colour at the same time signals the entrenchment of anti-woman, anti-working-class austerity-as-usual. There have been understandably frustrated reactions, not only to the tone-deaf global coverage, but also to the ostensible “identity politics” signalled by LGBT rights groups welcoming Varadkar’s election.

Why Theresa May is a true heir to Richard Nixon | Aditya Chakrabortty | Opinion | The Guardian
Trump wasn’t playing politics: he was prosecuting a culture war – and a culture war is anti-politics. [...] First came her speech about how “the country is coming together”, even while her political opponents were not. Her cheerleaders were in the press the next day, baying for “Blue murder” and for her to “Crush the saboteurs”. I watched all this from the US; and in the land where Democrats are now routinely labelled “treasonous” it all sounded eerily familiar: us v them; the people v Westminster; leavers v remainers. [...] “forged a public language that promised mastery of the strange new angers, anxieties, and resentments wracking the nation”. [...] Nixon appealed to the “silent majority”. [...] “less about a traditional left-right battle and more about identity and values” [<< Rentnerrepublik]

Making Britain Great Again by Niall Ferguson - YouTube
Brexit is a misnomer. it is not about British, Brexit is about the English! And Scotland failed to amend the outcome. What matters is age in turnout. The problem of granny voting out. GENERATIONAL CONFLICT in 21st century. And general inequality. Sovereignty was smth for alt-right people (authoritarian liking correlation). [...] and most importantly, IT IS NOT THE ECONOMY ANY MORE, STUPID (identity over pay day). At least for half of it. See also Donald Trump. LIES IN POLITICS HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE POWERFULL THAN 2016 - Brexit and Trump. DailyMail about EEA's. Immigrants take no jobs from "English." Immigration has contributed to growth (GDP). + WILL BE LONGEST DIVORCE. = HIT TO ECON WILL BE AS HARSH AS PREDICTED! HARD BREXIT MIGHT EVEN BE UNDERESTIMATED. [...] Populism (multiculturalism, social liberalism, immigration, environmentalism, feminism, globalisation, capitalism/corporatism) vs Cosmopolitism & Econ Left vs Econ Right [...] Brexit campaign was succesulf as in that leave voters dont think didnt think economically, it would make much of a difference. Campaign issues cultural ‘call to arms’ to boost arts learning in England | Culture | The Guardian
A generation of young people will be “intellectually poorer, emotionally more limited, and socially more isolated” unless they are allowed access to a full range of arts and culture. [...] Serota said experience of art and culture in school can shape all lives. “Creativity is ... one of the essential ingredients of a rich and tolerant society and of personal and national identity. It should be one of the cornerstones of education, not an option or an afterthought and we should be celebrating all kinds of intelligence and intuition, not creating hierarchies within the disciplines of the mind,” he said.

The blame for distorting our view of women doesn’t lie just with advertisers | Lucy Mangan | Comment is free | The Guardian
If we objected strongly enough to warped views of female bodies, women would take our custom elsewhere. But we keep buying the brands that offend us [...] But the lack of change in this area suggests consumers are not changing their spending habits. And as most of the consumers of the brands and products these advertisers are selling to are women purporting to hate this kind of thing, we have a conundrum: why are we still doing this? Why aren’t we putting our money where our mouths are? And then, obviously, in further solidarity taking our mouths off for a pizza somewhere? [...] Asking, or compelling by legislation, advertisers to do this runs counter to almost every prevailing ideology and trend. It asks that moneymaking ventures act for the greater good instead of the bottom line. It asks government to chip away at a cornerstone of the free market. It conceptualises women as hapless victims of intangible forces.

Laurie Anderson: 'Capitalism is a disaster for human relations' | Film | The Guardian
The experimental artist and director talks about her new film, The Heart of a Dog, the trouble with social media – and coming to terms with death [...] But if your brand is just you, is that uncomfortable? Extremely. It’s even worse to market your style. It’s truly sad. And everyone on Facebook has the same sort of marketing ploy selling their image. What does that do to people? It’s extremely brutalising that you’re going to be for sale. It’s one of the worst things you can possibly imagine. Go to any party and you see that: I just don’t think you’re worth talking to. Someone else has a bigger plus sign over their heads. Capitalism is an absolute disaster for human relations. // social isolation, deprivation, Perspektivlosigkeit, Free Will, Dopamine, mobile homescreen, social alienation,

Why are London cyclists so white, male and middle-class? | UK news | The Guardian
[ road safety, road cycling lessons, reform of laws putting cyclist on equal status as road user, campaign against road rage, better weather?, ] A fascinating study of why some Londoners cycle and others don’t illuminates cultural obstacles Boris Johnson’s cycling plans must overcome [...] One of its main findings concerns the congruence between being someone who cycles and an entire social identity bound up with class, ethnicity, values and aspirations. In other words, London cyclists were seen as being a certain sort of person: “Somebody who’s quite environmentally friendly, probably quite independent, maybe a bit of a leftie, vegetarian,” observed a woman called Michelle. Another participant, Julia, a cycling young professional, was very candid about these cultural associations and embraced them. “I mean, to be fair, it does make me feel smug, my friends joke that it’s very middle-class and they joke that it sort of fits with the lifestyle of gardening, listening to Radio 4, ...

Hysterical consumerism ruins food. And holidays. And books | Emma Brockes | Comment is free | The Guardian
[ Brand dilution (because there is a queue of brands waitng to be exploited and sold out, although millenials don't see sell-outs as bad anymore ...) vs ] Brand extension, the capitalist form of mission creep, has been around for a long time and, although it’s hit or miss – Richard Branson’s Virgin Brides springs to mind – it makes a certain amount of commercial sense. More depressing is what it says about consumer appetites, a sugar-in-everything infantilization of tastes that suggests if you love something, you must have it infused in your tea or printed on a blanket so you can drag it around with you everywhere. [...] This transference of one good thing to another, unrelated good thing is part of the peculiarly American urge to satisfy all appetites at once and it’s eroding the idea of pleasure as context-specific.
