Tesla might turn its Supercharger stations into mini rest stops
The automaker has a plan to add convenience store-esque amenities to its fast-charging stations, according to a report from Restaurant Business spotted by Grub Street. The new plans would transform Supercharger stops from single-purpose power-up stations to mini rest stops.

“People are coming and spending 20 to 30 minutes at these stops,” Tesla CTO J.B. Straubel told an audience at foodservice-technology conference FSTEC, referring to the Supercharger's estimated half hour power-up time. “They want to eat, they want to have a cup of coffee, and they want to use the bathroom.”

Tesla's Damaged Goods Problem - Marginal REVOLUTION
Tesla owners in Florida may be grateful for this mileage boost as they escape the ravages of Irma but I suspect that some of them will be upset when they have more time to reflect. How could Tesla increase the mileage at the flick of a switch? The answer is that owners of the Tesla 60kWh version of its Model S and Model X actually have the same battery as the 75kWh vehicles but the battery has been purposely limited or “damaged” to provide only 60KWh of mileage. But why would Tesla damage its own vehicles?

Tesla's real capacity problem: Too many people
Tesla uses far more workers than NUMMI employed to build far fewer cars. In 1985, its first full year of production, NUMMI had 2,470 employees and produced 64,764 vehicles — about 26 vehicles per worker per year. By 1997, it had 4,844 workers and produced 357,809 vehicles — about 74 vehicles per worker per year.

Tesla, on the other hand, had between 6,000 and 10,000 workers in 2016 and manufactured 83,922 vehicles. That puts its vehicle-per-worker number between 8 and 14, about one-seventh the efficiency of NUMMI at its peak.

Tesla Model 3 ramp-up aims to beat BMW, Mercedes in just 1 year
For Musk to hit all of his targets, Tesla would need to build about 430,000 Model 3s by the end of next year. That’s more than all of the all-electric cars sold worldwide last year. The rollout will begin in California and move east, focusing on U.S. reservation holders. Even if half of the Model 3 inventory shipped to other countries, U.S. sales under Musk’s targets would outpace the BMW 3 series and the Mercedes C class -- combined.

Autos and Economics: Peak Auto (II): Tesla Valuations
So they're a growth story – but they won't start producing the Model 3 in volume until 2018. [Tesla has yet to host journalist test drive shindigs yet – with the automotive journalist motto "drink free or die" those are rightly called drive-and-drink weeks. Anyway, those are 6 months before production, and with a new model and a new plant ramp-up then can't be earlier than 2018.] If they have a followup model that will add volume, then it can't be any time before 2021, as they've yet to raise money for a new assembly plant, much less break ground.
