It's Not Just You
«I don't have a solution. But at least I can try to keep this in mind, when the overwhelm starts to get to me. It's All Too Much not because I am inadequate, but because standards for my class's behavior have risen faster than we've built the infrastructure and prosthetics we'd need to meet them, and because of an unequal distribution of the benefits of the information revolution.»

FaceFacts « ASCII by Jason Scott
«The old saw is that people don’t understand that Facebook doesn’t consider the users their customers – they consider the advertisers their customers. Make no mistake, this is true... but it implies that Facebook takes some sort of benign “let’s keep humming along and use this big herd of moos to our advantage”. But it doesn’t. Facebook actively and constantly changes up the game, makes things more intrusive, couldn’t give less of a shit about your identity, your worth, your culture, your knowledge, your humanity, or even the cohesive maintenance of what makes you you. Facebook couldn’t care less about you than if it was born in your lower intestine and ripped out of you in the middle of the night.»

United Methodist Church Votes To Keep Bans On Same-Sex Weddings, LGBTQ Clergy : NPR
The UMC has been a deeply unhealthy body in some ways for a long time, and not necessarily in the ways that you'd think I mean that. From afar, I have this really uncomfortable sense that in a lot of places the left end of its political spectrum has destroyed the church where it holds sway by way of eroding its core practice / aesthetic / identity, while the more conservative churches that still seem to operate in traditional patterns are where the faith & community (essentially one and the same entity) are still really alive - but also the places you're most likely to find, say, really entrenched homophobia (though granted it doesn't seem nearly as virulent as in other denominations, and I sure have come across a lot of pretty-gay-seeming Methodist clergy in those places). It's probably hard to resolve any of this.

George Orwell: Politics and the English Language
I hadn't read this in a while. I now think Orwell is actually wrong about a lot of this, but it's an interesting one to revisit.
