Our Music — Christ Community Church
The up-building of the church ought to be variously accommodated to the customs of each nation and age. It will be fitting as the advantage of the church will require to change traditional practices and establish new ones.

Indeed I admit that we should not charge into innovation rashly, suddenly, for insufficient cause, but love will best judge what will hurt and edify. And if we let love be our guide, all will be safe.

John Gibson Paton - Wikipedia
My dear father walked with me the first six miles of the way. His counsel and tears and heavenly conversation on that parting journey are fresh in my heart as if it had been but yesterday; and tears are on my cheeks as freely now as then, whenever memory steals me away to the scene. His tears fell fast when our eyes met each other in looks for which all speech was vain! He grasped my hand firmly for a minute in silence, and then solemnly said: "God bless you, my son! Your father's God prosper you, and keep you from all evil!" Unable to say more, his lips kept moving in silent prayer; in tears we embraced, and parted. I ran off as fast as I could; and, when about to turn a corner in the road where he would lose sight of me, I looked back and saw him still standing with head uncovered where I had left him gazing after me. Waving my hat in adieu, I was round the corner and out of sight in an instant. But my heart was too full and sore to carry me further, so I darted into the side of the road and wept for a time. Rising up cautiously, I climbed the dyke to see if he yet stood where I had left him; and just at that moment I caught a glimpse of him climbing the dyke and looking out for me! He did not see me, and after he had gazed eagerly in my direction for a while he got down, set his face towards home, and began to return, his head still uncovered, and his heart, I felt sure, still rising in prayers for me. I watched through blinding tears, till his form faded from my gaze; and then, hastening on my way, vowed deeply and oft, by the help of God, to live and act so as never to grieve or dishonour such a father and mother as He had given me. The appearance of my father when we parted has often through life risen vividly before my mind, and does so now as if it had been but an hour ago. In my earlier years particularly, when exposed to many temptations, his parting form rose before me as that of a guardian Angel. It is no pharisaism, but deep gratitude, which makes me here testify that the memory of that scene not only helped to keep me pure from the prevailing sins, but also stimulated me in all my studies, that I might not fall short of his hopes, and in all my Christian duties, that I might faithfully follow his shining example.

William Wheaton - Wikipedia
In 1887, Wheaton gave an interview to The San Francisco Daily Examiner, describing the early days of baseball in New York. He recalled that:[1]
"We played no exhibition or match games, but often our families would come over and look on with much enjoyment. Then we used to have dinner in the middle of the day, and twice a week we would spend the whole afternoon in ball play. We were all mature men and in business, but we didn't have too much of it as they do nowadays. There was none of that hurry and worry so characteristic of the present New York. We enjoyed life and didn't wear out so fast."[1]

Joshua Fry Speed - Wikipedia
You know I dislike slavery; and you fully admit the abstract wrong of it. ... I also acknowledge your rights and my obligations, under the constitution, in regard to your slaves. I confess I hate to see the poor creatures hunted down, and caught, and carried back to their stripes, and unrewarded toils; but I bite my lip and keep quiet. In 1841 you and I had together a tedious low-water trip, on a Steam Boat from Louisville to St. Louis. You may remember, as I well do, that from Louisville to the mouth of the Ohio, there were, on board, ten or a dozen slaves, shackled together with irons. That sight was a continued torment to me; and I see something like it every time I touch the Ohio, or any other slave-border. It is hardly fair for you to assume, that I have no interest in a thing which has, and continually exercises, the power of making me miserable. You ought rather to appreciate how much the great body of the Northern people do crucify their feelings .

Know Nothing - Wikipedia
I am not a Know-Nothing – that is certain. How could I be? How can any one who abhors the oppression of negroes, be in favor of degrading classes of white people? Our progress in degeneracy appears to me to be pretty rapid. As a nation, we began by declaring that 'all men are created equal.' We now practically read it 'all men are created equal, except negroes.' When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read 'all men are created equals, except negroes and foreigners and Catholics.' When it comes to that I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretense of loving liberty – to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocrisy.

“We are so utterly ordinary, so commonplace, while we profess to know a Power the Twentieth Century does not reckon with. But we are "harmless," and therefore unharmed. We are spiritual pacifists, non-militants, conscientious objectors in this battle-to-the-death with principalities and powers in high places. Meekness must be had for contact with men, but brass, outspoken boldness is required to take part in the comradeship of the Cross. We are "sideliners" -- coaching and criticizing the real wrestlers while content to sit by and leave the enemies of God unchallenged. The world cannot hate us, we are too much like its own. Oh that God would make us dangerous!”

Mordecai Brown - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Brown lost parts of two fingers on his right hand,[1] and in the process gained a colorful nickname. He turned this handicap into an advantage by learning how to grip a baseball in a way that resulted in an exceptional curveball, which broke radically before reaching the plate. With this technique he became one of the elite pitchers of his era.

Brown was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1949.

May I Split My Giving Between My Church and Another Ministry? | Desiring God
I hope it is clear when I say that tithing is not a “have to,” not a New Testament rule. I am saying something like this: Suppose a football coach does not say to his high school team, “Everybody must get up at 5:00 every morning and run three miles so as to be fit for the maximum effectiveness of this team.” But instead the coach says, “I want you to love this sport with all your heart and I want you to give it all you have got this season. I want you to pursue maximum excellence and serve this team to make it as great as it can be.”

Now which of those two ways of talking to the team sets the higher standard? The second way doesn’t have any rules attached to it. The first one does. Up at five every day. Three miles. It sounds pretty rigorous. But I think the second word from the coach is the higher standard. He touches the heart of the team members. And if any of them uses the absence of rules to justify half-hearted allegiance to the team, he is simply not following the heart of his coach. And so it is with giving in the church.

George Mueller's Strategy for Showing God | Desiring God
The last portion of scripture which I read to my precious wife was this: “The Lord God is a sun and shield, the Lord will give grace and glory, no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.” Now, if we have believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, we have received grace, we are partakers of grace, and to all such he will give glory also. I said to myself, with regard to the latter part, “no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly”—I am in myself a poor worthless sinner, but I have been saved by the blood of Christ; and I do not live in sin, I walk uprightly before God. Therefore, if it is really good for me, my darling wife will be raised up again; sick as she is. God will restore her again. But if she is not restored again, then it would not be a good thing for me. And so my heart was at rest. I was satisfied with God. And all this springs, as I have often said before, from taking God at his word, believing what he says.35

"Why are we so afraid when we think about death? Death is only dreadful for those who live in dread and fear of it. Death is not wild and terrible, if only we can be still and hold fast to God's Word. Death is not bitter, if we have not become bitter ourselves. Death is grace, the greatest gift of grace that God gives to people who believe in him. Death is mild, death is sweet and gentle. It beckons to us with heavenly power, if only we realize that it is the gateway to our homeland ... Death is hell and night and cold, if it is not transformed by our faith. But that is just what is so marvelous, that we can [by our faith in Christ] transform death."

Prayer Quotes | HopeFaithPrayer
Go for yourself, with all your temporal and spiritual wants, to the Lord. Bring also the necessities of your friends and relatives to the Lord. Only make the trial, and you will perceive how able and willing He is to help you. Should you, however, not at once obtain answers to your prayers, be not discouraged; but continue patiently, believingly, perseveringly to wait upon God: and as assuredly as that which you ask would be for your real good, and therefore for the honors of the Lord; and as assuredly as you ask it solely on the ground of the worthiness of our Lord Jesus, so assuredly you will at last obtain the blessing. I myself have had to wait upon God concerning certain matters for years, before I obtained answers to my prayers; but at last they came. At this very time, I have still to renew my requests daily before God, respecting a certain blessing for which I have besought Him for eleven years and a half, and which I have as yet obtained only in part, but concerning which I have no doubt that the full blessing will be granted in the end…

10 Reminders for Preachers - The Master's Seminary
Charles Spurgeon: Ah, my dear friends, we want nothing in these times for revival in the world but the simple preaching of the gospel. This is the great battering ram that shall dash down the bulwarks of iniquity. This is the great light that shall scatter the darkness. We need not that men should be adopting new schemes and new plans. We are glad of the agencies and assistances which are continually arising; but after all, the true Jerusalem blade, the sword that can cut to the piercing asunder of the joints and marrow, is preaching the Word of God. We must never neglect it, never despise it. The age in which the pulpit it despised, will be an age in which gospel truth will cease to be honored. . . . God forbid that we should begin to depreciate preaching. Let us still honor it; let us look to it as God’s ordained instrumentality, and we shall yet see in the world a repetition of great wonders wrought by the preaching in the name of Jesus Christ.

How To Employ Bill Simmons
In March, Simmons provided a potential clue about his future, tweeting out an article about good friend Adam Corolla’s independent podcasting company. According to Carolla and his CFO, The Adam Carolla Show earned $4.4 million in revenue last year, with $2 million in profit. Again: a free, daily podcast hosted by Adam Carolla netted $2 million in profit last year. You don’t think Simmons, with a diehard audience large enough to support a low-expense enterprise like podcasting, could earn similar cash if he struck out on his own? It is his one speciality in which he is a genuine force. It would also give him one of the few things he seems to crave more than money: creative freedom.

You can’t spend 15 minutes on the internet without stumbling across a thinkpiece proclaiming this the Age of the Podcast. Serial became a bonafide cultural phenomenon, and Slate has bet its future on them. Compared to TV the money involved with podcasts is still small potatoes, but they’re poised to emerge as revenue generating machines—and are nimble enough to turn profits easier than can television shows, which require exponentially larger production budgets.

The mechanics of podcast listening—you have to seek out and actively subscribe—favor those, like Simmons, who are better at building devoted audiences than entertaining large fleeting ones. This means most B.S.

Bergen-Belsen concentration camp - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The British comedian Michael Bentine, who took part in the liberation of the camp, wrote this on his encounter with Belsen:
We were headed for an airstrip outside Celle, a small town, just past Hanover. We had barely cranked to a halt and started to set up the "ops" tent, when the Typhoons thundered into the circuit and broke formation for their approach. As they landed on the hastily repaired strip – a "Jock" [Scottish] doctor raced up to us in his jeep.

"Got any medical orderlies?" he shouted above the roar of the aircraft engines. "Any K rations or vitaminised chocolate?"

"What's up?" I asked for I could see his face was grey with shock.

"Concentration camp up the road," he said shakily, lighting a cigarette. "It's dreadful – just dreadful." He threw the cigarette away untouched. "I've never seen anything so awful in my life. You just won't believe it 'til you see it – for God's sake come and help them!"

"What's it called?" I asked, reaching for the operations map to mark the concentration camp safely out of the danger area near the bomb line. "Belsen," he said, simply.

Millions of words have been written about these horror camps, many of them by inmates of those unbelievable places. I've tried, without success, to describe it from my own point of view, but the words won't come. To me Belsen was the ultimate blasphemy.

After VE. Day I flew up to Denmark with Kelly, a West Indian pilot who was a close friend. As we climbed over Belsen, we saw the flame-throwing Bren carriers trundling through the camp – burning it to the ground. Our light Bf 108 rocked in the superheated air, as we sped above the curling smoke, and Kelly had the last words on it.

"Thank Christ for that," he said, fervently.

And his words sounded like a benediction.[34]

Editors' note - Dr. Hauerwas, please tell us how you really feel!
In an awkward time the temptation will be to try to attract people who do not know what the New Testament is by providing a truncated and simplistic account of the gospel.
Those who use such strategies will be impatient with theologians who then criticize them for being simplistic. When you are struggling for survival the demand for theological integrity may seem to be a burden rather than an aid and support.
In the world in which we find ourselves, a world in which the church has lost the ability to shape the lives of people who identify as Christian, it is hard to be critical of those in the ministry who seek to build their churches around what people think they need rather than what the gospel tells us we should want.
The disposition of those in the ministry to avoid strong theological claims can sometimes even be found to also be true of those who teach in seminaries.
I once had a colleague who preached the closing sermon for the graduating seniors at Duke Divinity School. The sermon was organized around this piece of advice: “They do not care what you know. They want to know you care.”
Though I am a pacifist I wanted to kill her on the spot. As a faculty we had worked hard to instill in these students a sense of the significance of theology for the work of the ministry, but just as they were graduating they were told the work they had done in seminary was not going to be all that important for the souls they were charged to care for.
If what you know no longer matters, the ministry cannot help but be another “helping profession” whose task is to attract people to church because of the appealing personality of the minister and the friendliness of the congregation.
The strategies to attract “the unchurched” through the manipulative practices associated with church-growth advocates I take to be a desperate attempt to “save” Christianity.
From my perspective, church-growth strategies are but the gurgles of a dying Christendom. The church-growth strategy to simplify the gospel for persons like the one seated next to my Dean, ironically, is a version of the liberal Protestant theological presumption that the basic language of the faith is a description of our experience rather than being about God.
The only difference between Protestant liberals and church-growth strategists is the latter tend to make a fetish of the Bible. - Stanley Hauerwas

Spurgeon on Christians who Rail Against the Times | Prince on Preaching
Come fair or work come foul, my comrades, hold ye the fort. Some men attempt to excuse their own negligence by blaming the times. What have you and I to do with the times, except to serve God in them? The times are always evil to those who are of a morbid temperament.

A scholar tells us that he once read a passage from a book to a worthy gentleman of the desponding school; it described “these days of blasphemy and rebuke,” – I think that is the correct expression, – and lamented the failure of the faithful from among men. “Ah, how true!” said the worthy man, “it is the precise picture of the times.” “What times?” exclaimed the scholar. “These times, of course,” was the reply. “Pardon me,” said the scholar, “the sentiment was delivered about 400 years ago; examine for yourself the date of the volume.” The benefit of railing at the times it would be hard to discover, for railing does not mend them (52).

Withholding Corn  --  C. H. Spurgeon
Ah! my brother and sister, it is very solemn work. You have undertaken to teach these young immortals, and if you are satisfied with just making them go through the routine, take heed lest when they grow up they come to curse you. I am afraid that many Sunday-school addresses have no gospel in them. I do not see why the same gospel should not he preached to children as to grown-up people. I think it should. To stand up in a Sunday-school and say, “Now, be good boys and girls and God will love you,” is telling lies. I know the teachers of our school feel the importance of delivering the truth as it is in Jesus to their children, and you therefore tell them: “You are lost and ruined, and your salvation is in Jesus Christ: look to him and live.” The teacher whose general teaching is not full of Christ will be called to a sad account in the day when Christ shall come. Dear teachers of the school, whatever you do not know, do know your Lord, and whatever you cannot get into the youngsters’ heads, do make it a matter of prayer that you may get a knowledge of Christ and his atoning blood into their young hearts by the Holy Ghost. The same is also true of those of our beloved friends who conduct Bible classes, or who in any way teach the people. I do not know that I have any necessity to say this to the most of you here, but still I will say it for the good of others; you must not my brethren get away from your great theme. It is of no use to go to the people empty-handed, we must take them bread; we only mock them by offering them stones if we talk to them about the histories and precepts of Scripture and forget the cross. Let our teaching be full of grace and truth: let us deliver our souls of every doctrine as we find it in Scripture, and let us be determined that if men do perish it shall not be for want of knowing the way of salvation.

We should start our own counter terrorist group to fight ISIS.
But I'm pretty pale and don't do too well in the heat myself. Maybe we can take members who all have an excuse not to actually go and fight, we can call the group SISI

"Ungodly spirits, ignorant of God's ways in bringing his children to heaven, censure broken hearted Christians as miserable persons, whereas God is doing gracious, good work with them. It is no easy matter to bring a man from nature to grace, and from grace to glory, so unyielding and intractable are our hearts." -Richard Shibbes "The Bruised Reed"

He who would do the right and the true thing in cold blood in the teeth of ridicule, is a bolder man than he who flings himself before the cannon’s mouth for fame

“Fear is often the mother of courage. To fear... - Charles Spurgeon - The Prince of Preachers
To fear God will make the weakest of us play the man, and the most cowardly of us become heroes for the Lord our God!”

ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi allegedly killed by US airstrikes : worldnews
Cue plenty of comments about him just being one man and easily replaced, or this just making them madder. Well the Israelis have had plenty of experience in assassinating terrorists and they know the trick - keep killing them until you get bad leaders, then let them fall apart by themselves.
One day you're facing a twenty year terrorist vet mastermind who recites classical Arabic poetry and claims direct descent from Mohammed, five guided missiles later it's Abdul the illiterate goatherd.

Terre Davis
"The closet was a very small apartment....having room for a bed, a little table, and a chair, with diminutive window shedding...light on the scene. This was the Sanctuary of the cottage home....oftentimes a day; generally after every meal, we saw our father retire, and 'shut to the door'; and we children got to understand by a sort of spiritual instinct....that prayers were being poured out there for us, as of old by the High Priest within the veil of the Most Holy Place."

How God Became Jesus—and How I Came to Faith in Him | Christianity Today
Some have great confidence in skeptical scholarship, and I once did, perhaps more than anyone else. If anyone thinks they are assured in their unbelief, I was more committed: born of unbelieving parents, never baptized or dedicated; on scholarly credentials, a PhD from a secular university; as to zeal, mocking the church; as to ideological righteousness, totally radicalized. But whatever intellectual superiority I thought I had over Christians, I now count it as sheer ignorance. Indeed, I count everything in my former life as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing the historical Jesus who is also the risen Lord. For his sake, I have given up trying to be a hipster atheist. I consider that old chestnut pure filth, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a CV that will gain me tenure at an Ivy League school, but knowing that I've bound myself to Jesus—and where he is, there I shall also be.
