Gartner: IT spending to hit $3.7 trillion thanks to record 6.2% growth in 2018
“This is the highest annual growth rate that Gartner has forecast since 2007 and would be a sign of a new cycle of IT growth,” said John-David Lovelock, a research vice president at Gartner. “However, spending on IT around the world is growing at expected levels and is in line with expected global economic growth. Through 2018 and 2019, the U.S. dollar is expected to trend stronger while enduring tremendous volatility due to the uncertain political environment, the North American Free Trade Agreement renegotiation and the potential for trade wars.”

For those who don't have 3.5 hours, some highlights from #TheAppGap | Coté
As I mentioned, a few weeks back I was in a recorded “think tank” put on by Dell which was, largely, about the changing nature of IT and how CIOs could go about managing it. For those who don’t want to nuzzle up to a 3.5 hour recording (perhaps with a six pack and some chips?), Dell has pulled some highlights: “What do customers expect in an application today?” IT is facing competition for the first time ever The Web Of C-Level Relationships The Willy-wonky of Servers talks about “persistently, ubiquitously connected to the network era” And check out Barton’s omnibus overview. For the record, I got a much needed hair-cut the next week.

Our recent research finds that since the middle of the 1990s, which marked the mainstream adoption of the internet and commercial enterprise software, competition within the U.S. economy has accelerated to unprecedented levels. … Tellingly, the changes in competitive dynamics are most apparent in precisely those sectors that have spent the most on information technology, even when we controlled for other factors.

Plethora of New Regulations Requires Data-Driven Enterprise
Kind of a pass-thru piece for Informatica, but, hey, still good data for Wall Street is probably looking for. "The first one is making sure the data is relevant, explained Parthasarathi in an interview with Wall Street & Technology. "If a compliance officer is able to answer a particular question, but says I can't answer that question, that won't do," he says. The second challenge is to make sure the data is trustworthy and the third challenge is timely data, he said, adding, "The fines from missing the deadlines is increasing." Complicating the process further, data is spread across so many different systems, so that delivering timely data is a challenge, he adds. In order to respond to multiple regulators in the U.S. and abroad, asking for different types of data and quality levels, Parthasarthi said that firms need a data-driven enterprise."

Digital Domain - Are the Glory Days Long Gone for I.T.?
I like to frame this idea a different way: IT prices are finally lowering thanks to things like open source and free consumer web services. The market is realizing that it's been bilked for decades to support fat margins for vendors, perhaps justifiably so, but not as often justifiably now-a-days. That's just a theory, though.

The Tyranny of Process Worship Within IT
"So large-scale process change efforts are undertaken, meetings are held and PowerPoints are created. In the end, success may be defined as making a few tweaks around the edges, with a new layer of process added on to the existing set. Management may then move on to the next project, while the staff tasked with implementation of these new processes shrugs and goes back to work." Never sure what to make of the "hire smart/good" people argument for IT process improvement. I don't think there's enough of them, so what does "everyone else" do for lack of enough brilliant, highly motivated employees in IT?

US House OKs Obama's IT stimulus
Please form a line on the right! "The main reason why the IT industry cares about the stimulus bill is that it has provisions to computerize the record keeping at doctors' offices and hospitals that don't have it, expansion of broadband Internet service to the 40 per cent of households in the country that don't have it, and research and development into giving the electrical grid an electronic IQ upgrade so it is smarter about distributing juice and also makes us smarter about how we use it. The bill that passed the House has $37bn in IT network infrastructure spending."
