“The way it works is like this: Microsoft makes its system-on-chip (SoC) blueprints available to chip designers, which fabricate the chipset and flog it to IoT device makers. These manufacturers slap the silicon in their products, and run Microsoft's Linux-based Sphere OS along with their own software on the chip, which connects to Microsoft's Azure Sphere running on Redmond's cloud.

Sphere does things like make sure gizmos only run official firmware, and automatically pushes out and installs bug fixes on remote devices, and so on. In the process, the chipmaker moves more silicon, the device vendor gets a turnkey security service to show to customers, and Microsoft gets a cloud customer for the lifespan of the device.”

Sentiment like this weird, but shows you fungible and porous categories are for Wall Street: "The deal should help valuations, he argues, as it falls within an historical range of multiples of sales to Ebitda of five times to nine times, with this one being 5.9 times."

Like: that deal is so specific to itself that it really has very little input on the "worth" of other tech deals. It might influence how you think about business SaaS companies...but not much beyond that. However, clearly, the way I think about valuations is not how i-bankers do. That's why you hire them.

Good assessment of the hurdle for wider Chromebook adoption: "Every application that businesses use would have to go through that transformation before a Chrome OS device can takeover in the business world," Campbell said. From trying to use Chromebooks “at work” over the years, I agree: of you’re work is all in on Google Apps and has dumped the Microsoft white-collar toolchain, you’re set. Otherwise, it’s really hard to interoperable with the Exchange, Word docs, etc. And, switching from desktop Excel to Spreadsheets is tough, as are presentations. The core toolchain of the “enterprise” is Microsoft Office, and Google has to go unseat that if they want to move more Chromebooks. I looked at corporate Chromebook adoption and buying in a 451 report earlier this year and came to similar marketshare rates.

At it partner conference, Microsoft’s Kevin Turner portrays the company as having 14% device (PC, smartphone, tablets) share: In a world of 14 per cent device share, we have a new mindset: you have to have a challenger mindset. Everyone has to have a challenger mindset. Pretty astonishing if that’s the case, or near it. El Reg covered that a 14% number, from Gartner, earlier as well with more breakout. Meanwhile, some momentum elsewhere: Turner claimed 785 customers had been “rescued” from Google in the last 18 months, that Microsoft is “eating VMware’s lunch” with Hyper-V, that Windows Azure added 42,000 customers during the last year and that SharePoint is a $2bn-a-year business. This is the common staffing benefit of new technologies: As such, Redmond says, the result is not that IT becomes redundant; it becomes more strategically important than ever. And, significantly, it goes from being a department that normally says “no” to user requests to one that can start saying “yes.” Even comparatively minor things, such as the vast 50GB inbox quota that Office 365 offers will, for many, be a breath of fresh air. And it will remove a traditional source of conflict between IT and the users they serve. Hopefully that’ll be the case. There’s also the less thrilling option to lay them off if all you need is email.

What Microsoft means by mobile first, cloud first: Build Android, iOS apps with Azure cloud • The Register
With these changes Microsoft has shifted its emphasis from Windows developers building Windows apps via Windows Azure to all developers building all apps via Microsoft Azure – an important distinction and one likely to grow more apparent over the coming months. It sounds like Build is a nice conference with some dramatic changes from previous Microsoft policy (strong ties to Windows and NIH). To be fair, many bits and pieces on Microsoft have long been “heterogenous,” it just wasn’t emphasized too much as a big deal. All of this should help.

According to tech market beanie Canalys, Microsoft operating systems ran 93 per cent of traditional PC clients in 2013, but the share fell to 58 per cent when tabs were rolled into shipments. Worse still, if you factor in all intelligent devices - notebook, slabbies and smartphones - the software firm accounts for just 22 per cent of shipments last year, down from the low 30s in ‘12.
