'Big Tech' isn't one big monopoly – it's 5 companies all in different businesses
‘But despite simple perception of them all as “tech” companies, their core revenue sources are clearly different. And those distinctions suggest ways people can understand and respond to anxieties about their growing economic and cultural influence.’

Apple Pay accepted at 1 out of 2 U.S. stores, says Apple VP Jennifer Bailey
“Apple Pay availability was limited to about 3 percent of stores in the U.S. when it launched in 2014, but is now accepted in 50 percent of stores.”

Apple bringing medical records to iPhone, Apple Watch
"It all works when a user opens the iPhone's health app, navigates to the health record section, and, on the new tool, adds a health provider. From there, the user taps to connect to Apple's software system and data start streaming into the service. Patients will get notified via an alert if new information becomes available."

Sounds cool. We'll see. Apple often takes 2-3 years to actually have software that works well and is useful. And then, as with Photos, they fuck it up 2-3 years late.

Apple’s Siri-equipped HomePod comes to your home on February 9
Apple is pretty cool consistent in anemic features versus alternatives, but like the Windows says. Of course, when Apple nails the opinionated workflow, you appreciate it:

“Since Apple revealed HomePod, it's been clear that the company is focusing more on sound quality and the music-listening experience with this smart speaker than Siri's capabilities as a home assistant. That's why Apple's device is so much more expensive than most Amazon Echo devices and the Google Home and Home Mini speakers (although Google does have Home Max, its own high-end smart speaker). However, HomePod will not launch with an important music feature: multi-room audio and stereo. Apple states that this will come to HomePod later this year through a free software update, allowing two or more HomePods to play the same audio throughout an entire home or specific room.”

Apple enterprise business not to be underestimated - Cook
'"The enterprise business is not to be underestimated," he said. "I'd doubt many people knew that we had a $25bn enterprise business that we quietly built in not too many years. Our penetration is low, but we have significant actions going on to really deepen that.' - up 40% y/y. I assume this is company's buying laptops and iPhones, sucking up RIM's old business and encroaching on PCs. I like the allusion of "low penetration" as if to say, "model it higher!"

Will OpenStack, Kubernetes, Or Mesos Control Future Clusters?
“When Apple moved to bare metal with Mesos, one of the big reasons why they did it was, first, they did not need the virtual machines and, second, they got a big performance improvement. The virtualization tax that we often talk about is very real and for Apple it was on the order of 30 percent. Removing it meant Apple could run Siri jobs 30 percent faster, which is a really big deal.”

Cash Piles, Paranoia Fuel Tech Giants' Buying Binge - WSJ.com
Nice pice on disruption fear driven tech M&A: From messaging to watches and thermostats, Facebook and Google, along with Amazon.com Inc. and Apple Inc., each want to own the digital platform where people communicate, shop and seek entertainment. The competition is driven by their ability to pay—their combined market capitalization exceeds $1 trillion—and long memories of faded tech stars that didn’t evolve quickly enough. … The four companies are competing to control as much as possible of the tech ecosystem. In Silicon Valley parlance, it’s all about controlling “the platform.” A big reason is to gather data about users, to serve them ads or to anticipate their next purchase.

Yes. I’d stop. I’d make things for myself, for my friends at home instead. The bar needs to be high. I don’t think that will happen. We are at the beginning of a remarkable time, when a remarkable number of products will be developed. When you think about technology and what it has enabled us to do so far, and what it will enable us to do in future, we’re not even close to any kind of limit. It’s still so, so new.

Of bits and big bucks |
The app economy shows that there are big opportunities in “digital pennies” and that the figures are beginning to match even the “analog dollars”. In fact, I suspect eventually digital pennies will dwarf analog dollars. The trouble is that these pennies will not be earned at the same control points. Bits are already big bucks. They’re just not the bits we are used to.

Icahn Pushes Apple CEO for $150 Billion Share Buyback - Bloomberg
Icahn, who has said that he considers Cook a good CEO, projects Apple’s stock can rise to more than $625 if it buys back shares, a person with knowledge of his thinking said in August. Icahn also wants Apple to borrow $150 billion at a 3 percent interest rate to fund the purchases and avoid paying more taxes, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the plans are private. Also: there must be some Bloomberg style that requires you to say why someone wanted to remain anonymous. Seems like a waste of characters. More here including this: Icahn also went into a rambling aside about how his personal chef, who prepared the meal (he would not disclose the menu) joked with Icahn that Icahn never sends out tweets when he and the chef have dinner together, even though Icahn’s personal chef is also named Tim.

What Clayton Christensen Got Wrong in his Theory of Low-End Disruption
But IT business buyers are, he says, and don’t know how make speeds and feeds (the basis of their buying behavior, plus price) account for UX: The business buyer, famously, does not care about the user experience. They are not the user, and so items that change how a product feels or that eliminate small annoyances simply don’t make it into their rational decision making process.

The real reasons Apple's 64-bit A7 chip makes sense | Mobile - CNET News
Shankland covers it well. In summary: more memory, speed of course, and the possibility of sync’ing up with laptops. Also, this one of those things that could turn into nasty technical debt if don’t transition early enough. As Galen Gruman puts it, going to 64 bit: sets the stage for Apple devices to replace PCs in the next few years, removing one of the performance caps in current models. (ARM, which designs the basic architecture used by Apple and others, is moving to 64-bit designs as well, but for servers first. So the 64-bit A7 is Apple’s early move on that trend in the mass market ARM isn’t focused on.) The performance gap between an iPad and a PC is already not that great; I bet it will disappear in a couple years.

S is for Service | asymco
The iPhone could thus be finally understood as a complex service business. It captures value through the phone bill but delivers value through a screen. A misdirection magic trick which many have tried to pull off. It’s essentially tapping into the $1.3 trillion communications market, skimming profits by delivering the “content” which lights up the wires. The jag on bundling is good too. Also, cf. "whole product".

Apple acquires AlgoTrim
AlgoTrim's website is still up and running as of this morning, and shows that the company's "flagship product is the Code Compression Library, a lossless and proprietary codec for compressing code, that is, the processor instructions. Its main use is to reduce the size of the firmware of a mobile device using NAND flash as non-volatile memory." The company has also done work for Android device manufacturers, which will most likely cease after this acquisition.

After years of being the also-ran to Microsoft Corp. in the workplace, Apple has seen its iPad become a standard business tool. Seventy-nine percent of the respondents use the iPad for business when outside the office.
