SUSE on Cloud 9 for love-in with OpenStack and Kubernetes
> With the Cloud Application Platform 1.4, SUSE has set its sights on a multi-cloud world laying claim to being the first software distribution to go 100 per cent Kubernetes for Cloud Foundry.
> ...
> The juice comes from Cloud Foundry's Project Eirini, which allows devs to seamlessly switch between Kubernetes or Cloud Foundry Diego as their container scheduler. An organisation already invested in the Kubernetes world therefore does not have to faff around with the Cloud Foundry Application Runtime orchestration. A single scheduler should do the trick.

What happened to OpenStack?
> So, you see, creating a viable, open source, hyperscale cloud software solution was against the best interest of the companies most heavily investing in OpenStack’s development.

> When you’re looking at other cloud products, think about similar conflicts of interest that might be affecting your favorite spokespersons today… (I’m looking at you, kubernetes)

Spelled out:

> Even then, if you’re using Kubernetes, you probably won’t succeed, because it isn’t in Google’s best interest to let anyone else actually compete with GKE.

> And that’s probably OK. In fact, OpenStack + Kubernetes is probably just fine for what ever you’re building, and neither project is going anywhere any time soon.

OpenStack 2018: Mark Shuttleworth chats to The Reg about 10-year support plans, Linus Torvalds and Russian rockets
> While he would obviously be very happy to welcome new customers to the Canonical fold, he points out that IBM is a "smart company" and says that "the guy who led the acquisition is the guy who engineered machines to beat Gary Kasparov. You might hope that there's a good chess game going on there behind the scenes."

Ubuntu's Mark Shuttleworth pulls no punches on Red Hat and VMware in OpenStack cloud
“If you want OpenStack and Kubernetes support with vendor independence at a low price, Canonical is your company. If you prefer a partner, which offers a soup-to-nuts stack, but at a higher price, look to Red Hat. And, of course, if you're already wedded to VMware, you've made your choice. There's room for all these approaches to the 21st century cloud and containers.”

Redefining OpenStack: Addressing identity and integration for enterprise-readiness
Big Tent considered not too cool: “The side effects were we lost some of the specificity around what projects were mature, and which ones were helper tools, so we wanted a focus on the core, and offer more explanation around how these tools fit together,” says Bryce.

VMware says users run away screaming after trying OpenStack
Doesn't like OpenStack:

“Customers have attempted to take advantage of OpenStack distributions or components and after throwing tens of engineers at it they are unable to get a reliable scalable environment,” Gelsinger said.

“We are seeing this repeated pattern,” he said, with OpenStack experimenters coming back to VMware. “This pattern of the immaturity of the OpenStack is well established.”

Will OpenStack, Kubernetes, Or Mesos Control Future Clusters?
“When Apple moved to bare metal with Mesos, one of the big reasons why they did it was, first, they did not need the virtual machines and, second, they got a big performance improvement. The virtualization tax that we often talk about is very real and for Apple it was on the order of 30 percent. Removing it meant Apple could run Siri jobs 30 percent faster, which is a really big deal.”

Digital Ocean CEO don't like OpenStack
You have to read it a few times, but I think dude just pooped on OpenStack: "At some point in the future, it would be good to see other open-source frameworks take a run at OpenStack, since today I feel like they [OpenStack] are the only game in town," Uretsky said. "We come from the open-source world and would like to be able to contribute a project that actually delivers real value."

@walmartlabs is now running in excess of 100,000 nodes of OpenStack on its compute layer. And that’s growing by the day. It’s also the technology that ran parent company Walmart’s prodigious Cyber Monday and holiday season sales operations. If that’s not production, I’m not sure what is.

All about VMware’s OoenStack distro. Check out the pricing: You may already own it. VIO is free to use for any organization with Enterprise Plus licensing. Support is optional. This is great for organizations that want to kick the tires, but aren’t quite ready to move to production. OpenStack is more than just a technology, it is a shift in thinking. It may take organizations a while to make it there, so why pay for something you don’t quite need yet? When you’re ready to go production, it will cost $200 per CPU, with a 50 CPU minimum. So, “free” if you’re already a customer and don’t want support. Fits well for the PoC and dev/test projects, and helps VMware retain customers who want to look into OpenStack. Also, with NSX under the hood, the hope is that one of the more complex parts of cloud, networking, works. We’ll have to track uptake over the next year; VMware has an interesting model here.

SolidFire's OpenStack reference architecture is driving new sales and thought leadership
My report on SolidFire’s OpenStack reference architecture (RA) is now up. In addition to covering the RA itself, I was more curious to hear how the business had been going that is, “is it a thing?” As I put in my newsletter the day of the briefing, it seems like the answer is yes. Here’s the 451 Take: SolidFire’s flash-driven software-defined storage approach has always been interesting: It promises to act as a generic pool of very fast storage, supporting multiple workloads on each box, with different performance characteristics as desired. The company has been looking to move beyond being just another storage provider, and its reference architectures in OpenStack and VMware, sold under the Agile Infrastructure brand, seem to be doing just that. SolidFire says the resulting thought-leadership has changed many of its customer conversations to a holistic cloud discussion rather than it being just a parts supplier for cloud projects. Our ongoing work in cloud and OpenStack shows that end users are eager for simpler and easier approaches to getting up and running with public and private cloud, and with so many companies planning cloud projects in the next two years, SolidFire should find plenty of traction. Clients can read the full report with some future looking plans, commentary on momentum and pipeline, and a similar RA for VMware that SolidFire just released

VMware Embraces OpenStack Clouds, Docker Containers
Good, thorough piece from TPM on VMware’s OpenStack and Docker stuff this week, inc.: The lesson to be learned from this is that OpenStack is just a framework for how the components of a cloud are controlled, but it does not prescribe any particular component for compute, networking, storage, or management.
