DBS Bank goes big on open source
“If we want to be truly innovative, we have to do experiments, of which some work and some don’t,” he said. “We have to accept failure and pivot fast – that has very much become a part of our culture of experimentation that enables us to be agile.”

“Our business and technology teams responsible for developing digital products that sit on each platform have joint KPIs [key performance indicators] and budgets that allow them to experiment and iterate,” Gledhill said. “We also need to learn and re-learn as no one knows everything about the latest technologies.”

Rometty: IBM Set to Lead IT’s 'Reordering' | Business Technology Solution Sales content from The VAR Guy
[Big Data, cloud and social/mobile] are truly going to change the profile of this company. And, if you think about it, actually they’re going to change the profile of this industry. As I like to think of it, the industry is reordering. If you take cloud, data and engagement, those are shifts that taken in total, this convergence, it will reorder the industry and we will lead that. We’ll lead it from the enterprise perspective. —IBM’s Ginni Rometty There’s a bunch of “reordering” to be done: injecting new technologies into creaky old enterprise tech.

How Aaron Levie and his childhood friends built Box into a $2 billion business, without stabbing each other in the back - Feature - TechRepublic
For me, it was a bunch of numbers. You can convince a bunch of VCs with numbers. The churn was low. The revenue was up. Talking to the customers, the sentiment was that this could grow within their companies. There was a huge market with cloud-based file sharing with both consumers but also enterprises. And, on pivoting to “enterprise”: In 2007, the consumer market was still the target at Box. But by 2008, individuals were using Box’s file storage and sharing services for business. In 2009, groups started using Box products within their companies. In 2010, Hamid said that “whole departments moved onto Box,” with entire businesses joining in more wholeheartedly in 2011. By 2012, the CIOs finally realized (or admitted) that hundreds of employees were using Box, essentially forcing their hands to get involved.

People are much more interested in running PaaS in-house than not in-house. We see a lot of interest in PaaS but very little interest necessarily in running PaaS on cloud infrastructures. I think broadly, this is going to be much more of the era of private cloud infrastructure as a service, more so than PaaS. PaaS is still in its early days, much earlier days than IaaS.

We’ll offer complete visibility from application all the way to the end user. We have most of that technology today. Traditional IT management vendors are reducing investment and focus on managing IT systems inside the firewall. They’re running to the bright shiny object of cloud growth. The infrastructure that sits inside the firewall is not going away. We’ll support it while also doing cloud. We’re doubling down on that old market of on-premises IT while also working hard toward managing applications no matter where they sit.

Finally, I have discovered a horrible, rather brutal method that I recommend only to men of excessive vigor, men with thick black hair and skin covered with liver spots, men with big square hands and legs shaped like bowling pins. It is a question of using finely pulverized, dense coffee, cold and anhydrous, consumed on an empty stomach. This coffee falls into your stomach, a sack whose velvety interior is lined with tapestries of suckers and papillae. The coffee finds nothing else in the sack, and so it attacks these delicate and voluptuous linings; it acts like a food and demands digestive juices; it wrings and twists the stomach for these juices, appealing as a pythoness appeals to her god; it brutalizes these beautiful stomach linings as a wagon master abuses ponies; the plexus becomes inflamed; sparks shoot all the way up to the brain. From that moment on, everything becomes agitated. Ideas quick-march into motion like battalions of a grand army to its legendary fighting ground, and the battle rages. Memories charge in, bright flags on high; the cavalry of metaphor deploys with a magnificent gallop; the artillery of logic rushes up with clattering wagons and cartridges; on imagination’s orders, sharpshooters sight and fire; forms and shapes and characters rear up; the paper is spread with ink - for the nightly labor begins and ends with torrents of this black water, as a battle opens and concludes with black powder.

Privatisation allows us to be bold: Michael Dell - Economic Times
When I spent time with other entrepreneurs, the feeling was ‘go public’. Now you have ‘stay private longer’, because then you can invest, innovate. The minute you go public, you have this incredible pressure to increase earnings every single quarter, quarter after quarter. I am not saying that is all bad. There are companies that are perfectly good for it, but it has a real downside as well.

Rod Johnson: “I just find the whole startup experience way more satisfying”
[T]he marvelous thing about a little company or a startup is, with few exceptions, everybody there is working very hard to do the best for the technology and for the company. You don’t tend to get a lot of individual agendas. If you get an individual agenda from someone in a startup, that’s the exception. Whereas in a big company, yeah, you get a pretty good chance of sitting in a meeting with people of whom two have an agenda that is very much around themselves and their group, rather than the company at a whole. I mean, the other thing is - in big companies, it’s frankly more difficult to get things done. You have this strange contradiction between having a lot of resources and finding it incredibly hard to get things done due to politics. [laughs]

Going private gives BMC freedom to invest in mainframes, says CEO | CFOworld
What gets left over after cloud? I like to bandy about the “formula” IT - SaaS = ? The point of it is, once/if packaged software running on-premises goes away, what’s left? Well, custom development mostly (“developers”), at larger companies (putting aside small ISV/SaaSes, who else can afford developers?), and keep the lights on stuff like keeping the network up. It’s imperfect, but it’s a good thought starter. Along those lines, here’s some (older), interesting comments from BMC’s CEO in what businesses are wanting to spend money on: “We are not seeing a dramatic jump in IT spending due to those IT trends [of cloud, social, mobile and analytics]. ”[Businesses] are going to spend far less on IT functions and will spend that saving to grow the business and innovate. They’re using technology to do both parts of that,“ said Beauchamp. Also, for the BMC watchers out there, on the mainframe/distributed split: ”[The mainframe business] is a third of our business, but it’s important to our business [because] it’s important to our financial services industry customers,“ Beauchamp told ComputerworldUK.

BMC Software aims to be more aggressive as private company | ZDNet
> Behnia said BMC would be interested in OpenStack, but hasn’t seen customers adopting it just yet. BMC usually waits until customers actually deploy to add management functionality. “OpenStack lacks capabilities for mission critical environments today, but development and enthusiasm is growing,” said Behnia. Beauchamp added that BMC will remain agnostic and plug into any infrastructure. “We’ve abstracted management so we can plug and play. Customers don’t want to be hardwired into an infrastructure stack,” said Beauchamp.

Marc Andreessen, Pat Gelsinger in verbal VMworld brawl • The Register
[VMware CEO Pat] Gelsinger disagreed, firing back by saying “People who say put everything into the cloud have never met a highly regulated customer.” Such companies will, he said, build their own data centres for decades, largely because they can’t hope to meet their compliance obligations with the cloud alone. … “Internal environments are riddled with holes, malware and Chinese hackers,” [Marc Andreessen] said, going on to assert that anyone who feels their in-house IT is not compromised is deluded. “Cloud will come to be regarded as more secure,” he predicted, and will soon be recognised as one way to relieve oneself of the unctuous business of securing a business.
