So for us to grow, the primary thing is to scale our go-to-market organization. And we’re very committed to doing that. We just need to hire and train and enable a world class sales team at scale.

Today we have a great sales team, but we are far fewer in number than the other players. We just need to expand that. And as I talked to customers, they asked us to, one: expand our sales organization and our go-to-market teams. Second: specialize (that sales team) with deep expertise in technology and in industry. And third: make it easy to contract and do business with us. We are extremely committed to doing all three of them.

And I’m using dude-presenting clothes as an example, because they are so much less complex than women’s clothes. And then, and then, you jump the pond. I showed up for an onsite in France, and pretty much every single male developer – the developers, was wearing an ironed shirt and a fine-gauge wool or cashmere long-sleeve sweater.

Escape Velocity, by Geoffrey Moore, is one of the better tech strategy books out there, mainly focusing on how existing companies can avoid screwing themselves. Innovator’s Dilemma and all that. This is a nice looking overview, including the above field question of how to do the messaging around why your offer is different than the alternatives.

When Apple reached parity with Windows |
Nice anecdote about iPads going from zero to full use in mainstream-sounding use cases: I’m not a “tech” guy, but wanted to give you a perspective from a person who works for a fortune 500 company. I recently returned from a National Sales meeting, and was amazed with the iPhone market share within our company 95%+. Not to mention that every sales and marketing employee is given an iPad for “work” use. Mine consists of hundreds of apps that are not for work use, which is consistent with other employees. All of our marketing material is now pushed to our iPad, which allows us to do sales presentations on our iPads. After 3 years we get a new iPad. Contrast that with three years ago, when most of us said we had to have BB’s, because Apple didn’t work well with Outlook. Our PCs/Notebooks had to be Windows based, because that works with the VPN, and we could use Excel for ROIs, and PowerPoint for presentations. I’m not an Apple zealot looking to convince someone it’s the greatest company in the world, but after what I’ve seen from my company over the past three years I’m now a shareholder of aapl. This is just a perspective from one Fortune 500 company with over 25,000 employees

Little wonder people are so excited about mobile app development, it's looking like it'll be the new computing platform: "IDC said worldwide shipments this year of app-enabled devices, which include smartphones and media tablets, such as the iPad, will reach 284 million. In 2011, makers will ship 377 million of these devices, and in 2012, the number will reach 462 million shipments, exceeding PC shipments. One shipment equals one device. For PCs, IDC is forecasting 356 million PC shipments this year, and 402 million in 2011. In 2012, there will be 448 million PC shipments." "Apple sold 2,524,000 Macintosh® computers during the quarter, representing nine percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold a record 22,727,000 iPods during the quarter, representing three percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter.
