I went to three tech conferences recently - monkigras, FOSDEM, and Config Management Camp. My little trip report is up at the Pivotal blog. Check out the running dude line art they made for it. A tie!

All about VMware’s OoenStack distro. Check out the pricing: You may already own it. VIO is free to use for any organization with Enterprise Plus licensing. Support is optional. This is great for organizations that want to kick the tires, but aren’t quite ready to move to production. OpenStack is more than just a technology, it is a shift in thinking. It may take organizations a while to make it there, so why pay for something you don’t quite need yet? When you’re ready to go production, it will cost $200 per CPU, with a 50 CPU minimum. So, “free” if you’re already a customer and don’t want support. Fits well for the PoC and dev/test projects, and helps VMware retain customers who want to look into OpenStack. Also, with NSX under the hood, the hope is that one of the more complex parts of cloud, networking, works. We’ll have to track uptake over the next year; VMware has an interesting model here.

You always hear about “the post-PC” world, that is tablets and smartphones (mostly smartphones!) taking over marketshare from PCs. In July of 2011, Horace Dediu published a chart that defines the way I think about the tech industry, for the most part in his post "Is the tablet computer a new PC or post-PC?". It’s the perfect chart because it shows when disruption happens and how: from an unexpected competitor and then all of the sudden once you realize what’s happening. It shows how the PC (read: WinTel) “lost” to Apple and Android. Around 2013 Gartner started tracking these numbers (they’d been doing some weird “media tablet” thing before that), and you can pull the from press releases (2013, 2014, 2015) to get a non-Horace picture. Anyhow, here’s the current rev of the chart based on Gartner’s world-wide shipment estimates. Amazing! (“Phones” includes smartphones and “hybrid” devices like the Yoga, etc. The hybrid stuff is very small, a rounding error, so don’t freak out too much about the taxonomy.) Gartner also publishes OS share: in 2014, there were 1.1 billion Android devices, 262 million iOS/MacOS (they combine them), and 333 million Windows, along with a big bucket of 626 million “other.” So, Android has 47.8% share, iOS/Mac 11%, Windows 14%. In doing strategy and analyst work, I feel like I put this chart together every year. What it says is: mobile wins, write apps for those devices. Do that third platform shit! Granted, these are only shipments, not cumulative “existing” boxes. Hey, it’s just a chart, after all. (See also [a 451 report I wrote about Chromebook usage for some more charts and figures on device and PC adoption].)

In 2014, 75% of enterprise workloads reside in noncloud environments, and only 50% are expected to be in any kind of cloud in two years, with internal private cloud leading the way. Internal, on-premises private cloud is expected to account for 23% of all workloads in 2016, up from 12% in 2014. For the same time period, the use of public cloud is expected to double, but should not exceed 20% of all large and midsize enterprise workloads and applications. Hybrid cloud, which we define as two or more distinct cloud infrastructures that actively interoperate to deliver seamless business functions, is harder to achieve than some of the other delivery mechanisms. Some analysis from recent 451 surveys on current and planned cloud usage.
