Norovirus Smartphone: Using Megapixels And Microfluidics To Fight The Other Kind Of Virus Infection | Hackaday
Most of the 685 million norovirus infections each year resolve after a few miserable days, but some require hospitalization and 200,000 of them result in death, mainly from dehydration and mainly children. An easy to use, cheap, and accurate means of detecting the virus in the field would be quite a boon to public health. And soon, smartphones may be able to do just that. To solve the problem of rapidly identifying norovirus in real-world conditions, a team at the University of Arizona has developed a unique microfluidics virus detection method. The idea is similar to the “sandwich” immunoassay used in the lab, but with a few twists.

Paper Toy Can Save Lives (paper centrifuge) @ Hackaday
Although there is a lot of discussion about health care problems in big countries like the United States, we often don’t realize that this is a “first world” problem. In many places, obtaining health care of any kind can be a major problem. In places where water and electricity are scarce, a lot of modern medical technology is virtually unobtainable. A team from Standford recently developed a cheap, easily made centrifuge using little more than paper, scrap material like wood or PVC pipe, and string.

Taxonomer: an interactive metagenomics analysis portal
Taxonomer: an interactive metagenomics analysis portal for universal pathogen detection and host mRNA expression profiling. @ PubMed - NCBI.

High-throughput sequencing enables unbiased profiling of microbial communities, universal pathogen detection, and host response to infectious diseases. However, computation times and algorithmic inaccuracies have hindered adoption.

We present Taxonomer, an ultrafast, web-tool for comprehensive metagenomics data analysis and interactive results visualization. Taxonomer is unique in providing integrated nucleotide and protein-based classification and simultaneous host messenger RNA (mRNA) transcript profiling. Using real-world case-studies, we show that Taxonomer detects previously unrecognized infections and reveals antiviral host mRNA expression profiles.

Plug-and-play diagnostic devices @ MIT News
Modular blocks could enable labs around the world to cheaply and easily build their own diagnostics. Researchers at MIT’s Little Devices Lab have developed a set of modular blocks that can be put together in different ways to produce diagnostic devices. These “plug-and-play” devices, which require little expertise to assemble, can test blood glucose levels in diabetic patients or detect viral infection, among other functions. Using this system, called Ampli blocks, the MIT team is working on devices to detect cancer, as well as Zika virus and other infectious diseases. The blocks are inexpensive, costing about 6 cents for four blocks, and they do not require refrigeration or special handling, making them appealing for use in the developing world.

Infection? Your Smartphone Will See You Now | Hackaday
When Mr. Spock beams down to a planet, he’s carrying a tricorder, a communicator, and a phaser. We just have our cell phones. The University of California Santa Barbara published a paper showing how an inexpensive kit can allow your cell phone to identify pathogens in about an hour. That’s quite a feat compared to the 18-28 hours required by traditional methods. The kit can be produced for under $100, according to the University.

OpenScope MZ: Open-source All-in-one Instrumentation - Digilent
OpenScope MZ is a USB/WiFi oscilloscope with a Waveform Generator and Logic Analyzer. What does that mean? It's a device that you connect to your computer (through WiFi or a USB cable) that allows you to acquire, analyze, visualize, and control signals from circuits, sensors, and other electronic devices. Unlike typical USB instruments, OpenScope MZ can also be programmed to run standalone like an Arduino or Raspberry Pi, but with high-speed precision analog and digital I/O. At the core of the OpenScope MZ is a powerful Microchip PIC32 MZ Processor. This processor has many resources that we took advantage of to enable the functionalities found on OpenScope MZ.

OpenScope MZ also comes with WaveForms Live, which is a free, open-source, JavaScript-based software that runs in a browser and is inspired by our extremely popular software tool, WaveForms 2015.

Using the OpenScope + WaveForms Live, you will be able to configure the OpenScope to be an Oscilloscope, a Function Generator, a Logic Analyzer, a Power Supply, and even a Data Logger.

$10 Cellphone Microscope Wins 3 Awards, Heading To Africa for Tests
Mobile phones have become one of the most universal pieces of advanced technology in the world, and they are about to become even more vital. Aydogan Ozcan of UCLA has developed a microscope attachment for a cell phone – turning the device into a sort of mobile medical lab. It’s both lightweight (~38g or 1.5 oz) and cheap (parts cost around $10). As described in the journal Lab on a Chip, the cellphone microscope can analyze blood and saliva samples for microparticles, red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and water borne parasites.
