How WeChat, TikTok, and Chinese consumers are disrupting and personalizing luxury
Factor 3: The China Consumer Network, not enterprises or government, is the big engine of digital China.
China is the first country to have more than 1 billion digitally-connected consumers that share a common language, a common culture, a common regulatory environment, and lots of supporting infrastructure. Digitally connected and hyper-active Chinese consumers are increasingly acting like a network with frequent interactions between individuals. Consumers interacting with other consumers can impact a business far more (and far faster) than a company can. And as the connections of a network increase at the square of the number of nodes (sort of), the China consumer network is particularly large and powerful. China may have four times as many consumers as the US, but its consumer network has 17 times more connections (theoretically).

Teens Use TikTok To Fake Luxury Goods |
Teens are using the popular social media app TikTok to show each other how to find fake luxury products, called “dupes,” according to a report by CNBC.
One woman, named Holly Yazdi, put up a video on how to fake a Cartier ring that cost $1,650, for under $20. The post has 230,000 likes.
“Safe cartier ring replica from amazon!!” the caption for the video reads. “Doesn’t oxidize and true to size.”
The video is 11 seconds long and got 1 million views overnight.
“I have an expensive taste for an empty wallet, and after posting these videos I realize others do too,” she said in an email to CNBC. “Now with the attention my videos have gained, I receive messages and comments with suggestions of what people want to see. Obviously, I’m not going to get something I wouldn’t use myself, but my viewers have exposed me to a lot of things I really do want to get.”
Finding dupes is a huge genre on TikTok, as many teens want to have brands like Chanel, Gucci, Lululemon and Louis Vuitton, but can’t necessarily afford it.
Many videos show how to style clothes by painting and ironing on logos.

Forecast: TikTok to surpass 10m UK users by 2021 |
Since launching in the UK in 2017, social video app TikTok has exploded in popularity. But after more than doubling its UK user base last year, growth for the Chinese-owned app will slow in the coming years, as competition heats up and concerns grow among marketers, reports eMarketer.

This year, TikTok’s UK user base will grow 67 per cent to 8.12 million people.  By 2021, it will surpass 10 million.  This follows 205.3 per cent growth in 2019, as the dynamic, short-form video platform drew in a huge number of users, especially children and teens. Growth will slow to single-digits in 2022, as the app becomes heavily saturated among core younger users.

Owner ByteDance Aims To Grow Beyond TikTok |
As it aims to contend with tech companies around the world and capitalize on the velocity of TikTok, ByteDance Inc. is reportedly aiming to grow into eCommerce, games and other segments as well as rolling out new apps. The firm, which is based in China, is piloting music streaming in Indonesia and India, bought game developers and rolled out a financial services app, The Wall Street Journal reported.

It is not certain that the efforts of ByteDance will succeed per the report. A number of its products are aiming to go into sectors that have heavyweights already, with the inclusion of Spotify Technology SA and Ant Financial Services Group’s Alipay as well as Tencent Holdings Ltd.’s WeChat Pay. A video-based messaging app, Duoshan, that ByteDance made to go up against the WeChat messaging service was reportedly not successful following its launch.

New breed: How the Westminster Kennel Club figured out TikTok | Mobile Marketer
Westminster launched its TikTok account in advance of this year's event and saw encouraging results. The brand's first video on the platform was viewed more than 20,000 times in its first 24 hours, what Glow considers a good early metric for an initial post on an account that previously didn't exist and was only promoted via the brand's other social channels.

For Westminster, Glow's goal is to insert dog content into whatever is trending on TikTok and to join conversations that are happening on the platform. Glow is on TikTok "24/7" to see what people are talking about, what type of content they're posting, which challenges and hashtags have gone viral, and what songs are popular with users.

Regulator Ofcom to have more powers over UK social media - BBC News
New powers will be given to the watchdog Ofcom to force social media firms to act over harmful content.
Until now, firms like Facebook, Tiktok, YouTube, Snapchat and Twitter have largely been self-regulating.
The companies have defended their own rules about taking down unacceptable content, but critics say independent rules are needed to keep people safe.
It is unclear what penalties Ofcom will be able to enforce to target violence, cyber-bullying and child abuse.
There have been widespread calls for social media firms to take more responsibility for their content, especially after the death of Molly Russell who took her own life after viewing graphic content on Instagram.

Here's the real reason Mark Zuckerberg is so afraid of TikTok
"TikTok’s 2019 installs represent 44 percent of the 1.65 billion downloads that the app has had to date," Sensor Tower wrote in a blog post.

Of course, not everyone who downloads the app will go on to become an active user. But the numbers do tell the story of an app experiencing meteoric growth, especially in China, where Facebook isn't allowed to operate. China, where the app is known as Duoyin, was ByteDance's second largest market after the U.S., Sensor Tower notes.

All that makes TikTok an existential threat to Facebook, which is under constant pressure to maintain user growth across its services. And though Facebook has sought to copy some of TikTok's features in its own apps, those efforts have yet to take off. (Mark Zuckerberg also reportedly tried and failed to buy prior to ByteDance's 2017 acquisition of the app that would later become TikTok.)

So yeah. I mean, TikTok is doing well. One of the things that’s especially notable about TikTok is, for a while, the internet landscape was kind of a bunch of internet companies that were primarily American companies. And then there was this parallel universe of Chinese companies that pretty much only were offering their services in China. And we had Tencent who was trying to spread some of their services into Southeast Asia. Alibaba has spread a bunch of their payment services to Southeast Asia. Broadly, in terms of global expansion, that had been pretty limited, and TikTok, which is built by this company Beijing ByteDance, is really the first consumer internet product built by one of the Chinese tech giants that is doing quite well around the world. It’s starting to do well in the US, especially with young folks. It’s growing really quickly in India. I think it’s past Instagram now in India in terms of scale. So yeah, it’s a very interesting phenomenon.

How TikTok can help brands get on Christmas wish lists | Mobile Marketer
ideo-sharing app TikTok has the potential to be a key media platform for brands looking to reach young audiences around the upcoming holiday shopping season, several marketing experts told Mobile Marketer.

However, brands must be open-minded and willing to experiment because the app is still a nascent and mostly untested marketing channel that's working to keep apace with a significant surge in popularity. Chipotle Mexican Grill, Uniqlo, Ralph Lauren and the National Football League are among the first major brands to get on board with TikTok. Just last week, American Eagle Outfitters launched its first TikTok campaign to reach teens via a hashtag challenge, brand takeover and beta test of an in-feed video ad with badge that directs users to an external site to make a purchase. These efforts are recent enough that it's hard to know the exact size of the TikTok opportunity but, marketers are clearly interested.

Hero Cosmetics, a startup that makes overnight skin patches to treat acne, today launched an influencer campaign on TikTok, doubling down on the social video app the company claims has outperformed results on Instagram, according to an announcement shared with Mobile Marketer.
The "Get Ready With Me" promotion targeted at Gen Zers features 20 creators who will post videos of their morning routines with Hero's Mighty Patch product and the hashtag #schoolsurvivalkit. While ByteDance hasn't yet commented on the new service, it said on social media last month that it was recruiting people for team for the search engine after previously hiring technical experts from rivals Google, Baidu and Bing. The company said the search engine will offer censored results and content from its apps like Jinri Toutiao and the Chinese version of TikTok, in addition to other websites.
ByteDance was valued at $78 billion in a 2018 financing round, making it the most valuable tech startup worldwide.

Short-video app leader ByteDance tries again to break WeChat’s hold on social networking in China | South China Morning Post
ByteDance Technologies may have carved out a swathe of China’s online traffic with its popular short-video and news aggregation apps, but the Beijing-based company has yet to break Tencent Holdings’ grip on social networking. It’s not for want of trying.
In at least the third attempt in the past year, ByteDance will try to crack the market for social networking among China’s 829 million internet users, with a group chat within its popular Douyin short-video app. Friends who follow each other’s accounts can start a chat group to share text, photos, audio and videos on the app. The in-app functions allow users to share Douyin videos instantly into a group chat instead of downloading them and going outside the app to share it on other platforms.

TikTok's parent company readies smartphone plans | Mobile Marketer
ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of the TikTok social video app, on Monday said it will make a smartphone after a deal with device maker Smartisan Technology, Reuters reported. The plans are another sign of ByteDance's ambition to expand beyond video and news apps, and to rival Chinese tech giants such as Baidu and Tencent.
ByteDance struck a deal with Smartisan earlier this year that included the acquisition of technology patents and the transfer of employees. Wu Dezhou, a former Smartisan executive, is leading ByteDance's mobile phone efforts, per a report by financial news outlet Caijing.
Smartisan is not widely known outside China, having a 0.6% share of the country's smartphone market as of 2017, Week in China reported. The company is mostly known for founder Luo Yonghao, an internet celebrity who aspired to be the "Steve Jobs of China," according to Engadget.

Famous Birthdays Is Wikipedia for Gen Z - The Atlantic
If you want to know who the biggest TikTok star is right now, who is in Emma Chamberlain’s squad, or where Baby Ariel grew up, only one website will give you the answers: Famous Birthdays.
Despite its name, the site contains more than just birthdays—it’s more like a constantly updated, highly detailed map of who matters to the teen internet, featuring a mix of biographical information, photos, videos, rankings, and detailed statistics on every social-media star you could think of. And to teenagers, it’s a bible. “They have everything you want to know about everyone who is important,” says Grace, a 14-year-old in St. Louis.
Charles Porch, the head of global creative partnerships at Instagram, says that Famous Birthdays is like the younger generation’s Tiger Beat. “You might know about Famous Birthdays if you’re a parent,” Porch says. “But you definitely know about it if you’re a kid, and you definitely know about it if you’re a creator. Is it adult mainstream yet? No, but that doesn’t matter.” The site has 20 million unique visitors a month—more than a million more than Entertainment Weekly, and four times as many as Teen Vogue.

Memes Are the New Pop Stars: How TikTok Became the Future of the Music Industry - The Ringer
And, well, that’s exactly what happened. Sueco made an account and posted a video set to his moody trap tune “Fast.” He asked a friend of a friend, a pouty 16-year-old skateboarder named Lukas Daley, to share the song in a video with his hundreds of thousands of followers. Soon enough, other TikTok influencers lifted the track, using the first bass-heavy 15 seconds of the song as the backdrop for lip-syncing, loosely choreographed dance moves, and surprise outfit changes—among many other things.

Earlier this month, the app debuted its first multimarket brand campaign, an effort promoting Uniqlo. The push asked users to share videos of themselves wearing their favorite outfits purchased at the fast-fashion retailer. The contest was targeted at creators in the U.S., France, Taiwan and Japan, where Uniqlo is based.

Everybody's talking about: TikTok - We Are Social
What are the opportunities for brands to get invovled?
As mentioned, there currently aren't many (outside of the US, anyway). But if you can’t pay-to-play then brands always have the option of working with some of TikTok’s growing influencers. Whereas with other platforms a brand can have a significant amount of creative control, on a platform where audiences are the owners, they will have to give this over to the influencers if their content is going to have any impact.

Smaller brands may have the opportunity to have their own organic accounts, but whether this is maintainable, or even the best use of your brand's budget - that’s up to you to decide.

TikTok Is the New Music Kingmaker, and Labels Want to Get Paid - Bloomberg
TikTok and Douyin, both owned by the Chinese startup Bytedance Ltd., are propelling songs from obscurity to ubiquity overnight, rewriting the path to stardom for some acts. While Fitz and the Tantrums had already experienced success at home, the burst of fame on TikTok persuaded the band to focus on Asia as it rolls out its new album.

The list of acts that owe sudden success to TikTok grows by the day. Lil Nas X just scored a No. 1 song on the Billboard charts—and a record deal—after his song Old Town Road went viral on TikTok. And Supa Dupa Humble, a producer from Brooklyn, doubled his daily streams. “If you can get a song on Douyin, you suddenly get a viral impact,” says Simon Robson, the head of Warner Music’s Asian operations.

The Kids Use TikTok Now Because Data-Mined Videos Are So Much Fun - Bloomberg
Although these features make TikTok feel similar to Facebook, Instagram, and Snap, the app doesn’t rely on social connections to figure out what to show you when you open it. Instead, TikTok decides what videos to show by tapping into data, starting with your location. Then, as you start watching, it analyzes the faces, voices, music, or objects in videos you watch the longest. Liking, sharing, or commenting improves TikTok’s algorithm further. Within a day, the app can get to know you so well it feels like it’s reading your mind. That’s why Jade, the Oklahoma teen, mostly sees videos of people dancing, while her mom regularly gets clips of dog tricks.

Old Town Road - Wikipedia
"Old Town Road" (also known as "Old Town Road (I Got the Horses in the Back)") is a song by American rapper Lil Nas X. It was initially released independently on December 3, 2018, and gained popularity on social video sharing app TikTok. As a result, Lil Nas X was signed to Columbia Records, which now distributes the single. A remix of the song featuring Billy Ray Cyrus was released on April 5, 2019, and another remix featuring Young Thug is in the works.[1][2]

In March 2019, the song reached number 19 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart before the magazine disqualified it from being included on the chart on grounds that it did not fit the country genre, sparking a debate on the definition of the genre.[3] Had it not been disqualified, "Old Town Road" would have been the Hot Country Songs number-one song, as of the chart dated April 6, 2019.[4]

TikTok grosses $75M from virtual currency sales | Mobile Marketer
Social video app TikTok boosted sales of its virtual currency by about 243% to $5.5 million last month from a year earlier, according to app researcher Sensor Tower. People use the in-app coins to reward their favorite video creators, who can exchange the coins for digital gifts.
TikTok has grossed $75 million from the sale of virtual currency, Sensor Tower estimated. The figure includes global spending through Apple's App Store and Google Play, but not revenue from China's third-party Android stores.
China's iOS users represent about 23% of the total, or approximately $17.3 million, making the country the second-biggest market for in-app spending. U.S. TikTok users have spent about $41.3 million in the app, or 55% of the global total. TikTok sells the digital coins in bundles, such as 100 coins for $0.99 or 500 coins for $4.99.

Behind TikTok's Success: AI, Product Management and Hustle
With TikTok people have started creating an avalanche of political memes and short videos, using it's editing tools and library of prompts.

Report: India accounts for a quarter of TikTok's billion downloads
TikTok – the app that lets you create 15-second dubbed videos – is on a rapid growth curve. The app crossed 1 billion downloads last month, according to a report by analytics firm SensorTower. Intriguingly, a quarter of those downloads are said to come from India, making it the biggest contributor to the app‘s growth.

The app, owned by Chinese tech giant ByteDance, is wildly popular because of its easy-to-use system for recording videos overlaid with audio from mainstream music and movies. Given Bollywood’s massive influence on pop culture in India, it’s no surprise that TikTok – with its collection of audio clips from the country’s film industry – is a hit with people across the country. The fact that you don’t have to sign in to watch videos also contributes to its massive download count. Video analytics firm Vidooly noted last year that there are several content creators in India with more than a million followers on the platform.

In brief: ByteDance works on Slack rival despite heavy loss
Despite heavy losses last year, Bytedance is quietly laying the groundwork to launch Lark – a work collaboration and productivity app – in the US and other overseas markets. The move poses a potential challenge to the likes of Slack, Microsoft, and Google.
Bytedance reportedly lost US$1.2 billion in 2018 after the costly launch of its video app TikTok outside of China. Results of the expansion were mixed as TikTok became widely used in India but not in the US.
Lark was originally created as an in-house tool for Bytedance employees, but it’s now used by many of its business partners in China. The app comes with instant messaging, document editing, and calendars. Third-party developers can also make apps for it.

How TikTok Is Rewriting the World - The New York Times
What’s both crucial and easy to miss about TikTok is how it has stepped over the midpoint between the familiar self-directed feed and an experience based first on algorithmic observation and inference. The most obvious clue is right there when you open the app: the first thing you see isn’t a feed of your friends, but a page called “For You.” It’s an algorithmic feed based on videos you’ve interacted with, or even just watched. It never runs out of material. It is not, unless you train it to be, full of people you know, or things you’ve explicitly told it you want to see. It’s full of things that you seem to have demonstrated you want to watch, no matter what you actually say you want to watch.
