R package "codebook": Automatic Codebooks from Metadata Encoded in Dataset Attributes
Have not read yet but seems cool

From Twitter (I think) description below:
New #rstats pkg codebook automates tedious task
- human- & machine-readable codebooks from existing metadata (eg. haven-imported SPSS/Stata file)
- combined with data summaries
- hope to ease scientists into publishing searchable metadata
- rmarkdown-based

reads image scans, like on PDF. Extracts text. very cool, but couldn't get it to work on a PDF that also had handwritten notes on it - might work better when it is exclusively typed content.

It's a kind of long-to-wide solution to the problem.

Tabulizer - Extract tables from PDFs
R Package, super helpful, auto-detects tables and lets you extract them with R

Sample code that WORKS, from Competency Committee Folder in Outcomes. This code was based on the first link below, the community Rstudio link:
JCNDE_table <- extract_tables("https://www.ada.org/~/media/JCNDE/pdfs/domain_of_dentistry_July2018.pdf?la=en",
output = "data.frame",
pages = c(2, 3, 4) )

JNCDE_table_clean <- reduce(JCNDE_table, bind_rows) %>% #bind elements of list to 1 df
as_tibble()

-----------------------------------------
A related thing and how I found out about tabulizer

Another related thing: Vignette
