one earth
About:
"One Earth (OE) sees a not-so-distant future when humanity and the natural world coexist in harmony. Instead of pockets of nature in a human-controlled world, we envision a thriving wilderness dotted by green cities of the future. By 2050, more than two-thirds of the world’s population will live in cities, creating an unprecedented opportunity to protect our natural resources, while providing access to clean air and water, healthy food, and sustainable livelihoods for all people.
[...]
OE Campaign plan that tackles three of the world’s greatest problems — climate change, biodiversity loss, and food and water security. It seeks to ensure the resilience of our biosphere through a three-pillar strategy: 100% clean, renewable energy; conservation of 50% of our lands and oceans; and a shift to regenerative, carbon-negative agriculture globally by 2050.
[...]
The OE Climate Model is the first to show the enormous social, environmental, and economic benefits of a rapid transition to 100% renewable energy combined with a portfolio of Natural Climate Solutions (NCS) that achieve an estimated 500 billion tonnes of negative emissions, enough to bring our climate back into balance.
[...]
Geospatial computations conducted in the environmental sector, incorporating a wide range of data sets to create a global map called the OE Safety Net, which shows how we can secure the integrity of our biosphere. The map is organized by 190 bioregions: groupings of terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecoregions that allow for an analysis of the interdependencies between energy production, environmental conservation, and food and water access in each region."

Solar Impulse Foundation - Bridging the gap between ecology and economy
About:
"One of the first to envision ecology through the lens of profitability, Bertrand Piccard has always advocated that protection of the environment would become a reality only if it was perceived as economically viable and requiring no financial or behavioural sacrifices. He actively speaks out against the absurdity of old and polluting devices and systems, and promotes the benefits of new existing efficient technologies and solutions to motivate governments and industries to take action. A way to prove that solving climate change – rather than an expensive problem – is a fantastic market opportunity."

One of the main programs of the Solar Impulse Foundation is their Label:

"For the first time a label proves the economic profitability of solutions that protect the environment
[...]
selecting 1,000 solutions that protect the environment in a profitable way and awarding them the Solar Impulse Efficient Solutions Label.

This label serves as a new and credible symbol that can be applied to products, processes and services and serves as a guarantee of quality to those looking to implement clean solutions, and affords a competitive edge to the innovators behind them.

Assessed by independent experts for their technological feasibility, environmental and socio-economic benefits, and economic profitability, a portfolio of these solutions will be brought to decision-makers to encourage them to adopt much more ambitious environmental targets and energy policies."

PULP platform
About:
"The Parallel Ultra Low Power (PULP) Platform started as a joint effort between the Integrated Systems Laboratory (IIS) of ETH Zürich and Energy-efficient Embedded Systems (EEES) group of the University of Bologna in 2013 to explore new and efficient architectures for ultra-low-power processing.
[...]
Our aim is to develop an open, scalable hardware and software research and development platform with the goal to break the energy efficiency barrier within a power envelope of a few milliwatts, as well as satisfy the computational demands of IoT applications requiring flexible processing of data streams generated by multiple sensors, such as accelerometers, low-resolution cameras, microphone arrays and vital signs monitors.
[...]
PULP includes a state-of-the-art microcontroller system and a multi-core platform able to achieve leading-edge energy-efficiency and widely-tunable performance. Compared to single-core microcontroller units, a parallel ultra-low-power programmable architecture allows meeting the computational requirements of IoT applications, without exceeding the power envelope of a few milliwatts typical of miniaturized, battery-powered systems.
[...]
We have intentionally taken an open-source approach from the very onset of the project and so far, we have released efficient 32 and 64bit implementations based on the open-source RISC-V instruction set architecture, peripherals and complete systems starting from simple micro-controllers, to the state-of-the-art OPENPULP release which sets a new bar for low-power multicore IoT processors. Additionally, PULP supports multiple application programming interfaces such as OpenMP, OpenCL and OpenVX that allow agile application porting, development, performance tuning and debugging."

LOW-TECH MAGAZINE
About:
"Low-tech Magazine refuses to assume that every problem has a high-tech solution. A simple, sensible, but nevertheless controversial message; high-tech has become the idol of our society.

Instead, Low-tech Magazine talks about the potential of past and often forgotten knowledge and technologies when it comes to designing a sustainable society. Sometimes, these low-tech solutions can be copied without any changes.

More often, interesting possibilities arise when you combine old technology with new knowledge and new materials, or when you apply old concepts and traditional knowledge to modern technology.

We also keep an eye on what is happening in the developing world, where resource constraints often lead to inventive, low-tech solutions.

Underlying the common view of a high-tech sustainable society is the belief that we don't have to change our affluent lifestyle. However, changing our lifestyle does not mean that we have to go back to the middle ages and give up all modern comforts. A downsized, sustainable industrial civilization is very well possible - and more fun, too."

Climate, Energy, Economy: Pick Two (Resilience Is The New Black)
Article by Dr. Nelson Lebo, a serial permaculture property developer about the world's dilemma, with resiliency in mind as possible way out (e.g. with permaculture). Excerpts:

"We used to have this saying that if someone asks you to do a job good, fast and cheap, you’d say: pick two. You can have it good and cheap, but then it won’t be fast, etc.
[...]
when it comes to our societies we face a similar issue with our climate, energy and the economy.
[...]
Everything that is not resilient to high energy prices and extreme weather events will become economically unviable.
[...]
Investments of time, energy, and money in resilience will become more economically valuable.
[...]
Most people will experience climate change as a quality of life issue, and quality of life is related to a certain extent to disposable income. Acting or not acting proactively or reactively on climate change is expensive and gets more expensive every day.
[...]
Resilience Is The New Black.
[...]
Smart communities recognize challenges and respond accordingly. The best response is to develop resilience in the following areas: ecological, equity, energy and economic.
[...]
Pope Francis has identified climate change and wealth inequality as the greatest challenges facing humanity.
[...]
The knowledge, skills and experience gained while developing resilience are the ultimate in ‘job security’ for an increasingly volatile future."

Clean by Design - Apparel Manufacturing and Pollution
Program from the US-based non-profit NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council) which is looking for improvements along the supply chain in these four areas: Raw Materials, Manufacturing, Transportation and Consumer Care. About: "Clean by Design is an innovative program to use the buying power of multinational corporations as a lever to reduce the environmental impacts of their suppliers abroad. It focuses on improving process efficiency to reduce waste and emissions and improve the environment. Manufacturing practices in less-developed countries are generally less efficient than in the developed world. That means they waste money by using more energy, water, and materials than necessary. But by improving the efficiency in the manufacturing processes, there are plenty of opportunities to both save money and improve the environment." The Argument for Local Food
Editorial about a restaurant in Vermont which heralds a food revolution, shifting to local sourcing. Excerpt: "He's talking about a shift in power as potentially profound as the eighteenth-century dismantling of aristocracies throughout Europe. In a modern food landscape where the Krafts, Monsantos, and ADMs play the role of the Tudors, Tzars, and Louis XIVs, Murphy's life work is fighting for food democracy. [...] The typical supermarket contains no fewer than 30,000 items. About half of those items are produced by 10 multinational food and beverage companies. And roughly 140 people-117 men and 21 women-form the boards of directors of those 10 companies. [...] Much of the apparent variety is more a matter of packaging and branding than of true agricultural variety, and rather than coming to us from thousands of different farmers producing different local varieties, has been globally standardized and selected for maximum profit by just a few powerful executives." From chips to salad: the electronics companies making hi-tech lettuce
Excerpt: "With the help of efficient lighting, temperature control and computer monitoring, produce grown in indoor farms maintains its nutritional value while using up to 98% less water and 70% less fertiliser than traditional farms and no pesticides (Maintaining a bacteria-free, pesticide-free atmosphere means “farmers” are often required to wear cleanroom suits and masks to minimise the risk of contamination). Growing lettuce in this environment … leads to an extremely clean product that can be eaten straight out of the bag without needing to be washed. It also allows vegetables to grow up to two-and-a-half times faster than conventional farming. [...] GE Lighting's LED's used in Mirai's indoor farm, believed to be the largest in the world, uses 40% less energy than fluorescent lamps." HAG
