"The OpenChain Project builds trust in open source by making open source license compliance simpler and more consistent. The OpenChain Specification defines a core set of requirements every quality compliance program must satisfy. OpenChain Conformance allows organizations to display their adherence to these requirements. The OpenChain Curriculum supports this process by providing extensive reference material for effective open source training and management. The result is that open source license compliance becomes more predictable, understandable and efficient for all participants in the software supply chain."

An example of their practice is the open source merger and acquisition (M&A) assessment checklist which is intended as a tool to help evaluate the open source practices of an organization as part of the due diligence process. TOC of 60-pages document:

- Discovery of open source software in code bases
- Review and approval of open source use
- Satisfaction of open source license obligations
- Overseeing community contribution to open source projects
- Process adherence audits
- Open source policy
- Appropriate staffing for compliance execution
- Adaptation of business processes to accommodate open source specific requirements
- Training
- Verification practices
- Compliance process management
- Maintaining inventory of open source software
- Automation and tool support for large scale use, consumption, and compliance

The global food problem isn’t what you think - The Washington Post
Making a point for 'Nutrition Security'!

"Providing food security to the nearly 10 billion people who will inhabit the globe by 2050 is one of the key issues of the 21st century. Given that reality, you might think the international community would at least be able to agree on how to define the problem.

Unfortunately, you would be wrong.

While a large part of the agricultural research establishment is focused on one aspect of the challenge — calories — another part of the scientific community is focused on a related but different one: adequate nutrient consumption.

To this point, the first group has driven the world’s agricultural research agenda. But a new study I co-authored with a group of international scientists and recently published in Nature Sustainability suggests that calorie fundamentalism is leading us down a dangerous path.

Our group looked at both the question of how much food will be available during the next three decades and the question of whether this food will meet our nutritional needs.
We must shift our emphasis from food security to nutrition security.

A major effort must be made to increase the productivity — the yield per hectare — of nutrient-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and beans. By enhancing their productivity, we’ll make them more available and affordable. And we’ll see the benefits in a diminished obesity crisis and fewer victims of micronutrient deficiencies."

Written by Gerald C. Nelson, a professor emeritus at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a former senior research fellow at the International Food Policy Research Institute.

Software Freedom Conservancy
"Software Freedom Conservancy helps promote, improve, develop, and defend Free, Libre, and Open Source Software (FLOSS) projects. Conservancy provides a non-profit home and infrastructure for FLOSS projects.
Once joined, the “member project” receives most of the benefits of existing as a non-profit corporate entity without engaging in the arduous work of forming a separate, new organization. Conservancy aggregates the work of running a FLOSS non-profit for its many members.

Conservancy provides many important services for its member projects. Member projects can take directed donations, which allows donors to earmark their donations for the benefit of a specific FLOSS project. Conservancy provides fiscal oversight to ensure that these funds are spent in a manner that advances the project and fits with Conservancy's 501(c)(3) mission to promote, advance, and defend software freedom.

If the member project's leaders want, Conservancy can also hold other assets and titles on behalf of the projects, such as copyrights, trademarks, domain names, online hosting accounts, and title and ownership of physical hardware. Also at discretion of the project's leaders, Conservancy can assist in defending the rights represented in these assets. For example, Conservancy is available to assist member projects in enforcing the terms of the projects' FLOSS license.
Conservancy opposes the notion of patents that cover software, and urges contributors to its member projects not to apply for patents."

Shibboleth Consortium – Privacy Preserving Identity Management
Federated SSO.

"Shibboleth is a single sign-on log-in system for computer networks and the Internet. It allows people to sign in using just one identity to various systems run by federations of different organizations or institutions. The federations are often universities or public service organizations.

The Shibboleth Internet2 middleware initiative created an architecture and open-source implementation for identity management and federated identity-based authentication and authorization (or access control) infrastructure based on Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML). Federated identity allows the sharing of information about users from one security domain to the other organizations in a federation. This allows for cross-domain single sign-on and removes the need for content providers to maintain user names and passwords. Identity providers (IdPs) supply user information, while service providers (SPs) consume this information and give access to secure content."

OpenLDAP Software is an open source implementation of the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) and as such allows SSO.

"The OpenLDAP Project is a collaborative effort to develop a robust, commercial-grade, fully featured, and open source LDAP suite of applications and development tools. The project is managed by a worldwide community of volunteers that use the Internet to communicate, plan, and develop the OpenLDAP Suite and its related documentation.
The suite includes:
- slapd - stand-alone LDAP daemon (server)
-libraries implementing the LDAP protocol, and
- utilities, tools, and sample clients."

It is released under its own BSD-style license called the OpenLDAP Public License.

LDAP is a platform-independent protocol, several common Linux distributions include OpenLDAP Software for LDAP support. The software also runs on BSD-variants, as well as AIX, Android, HP-UX, macOS, Solaris, Microsoft Windows (NT and derivatives, e.g. 2000, XP, Vista, Windows 7, etc.), and z/OS. It is mainly used as an address book (for e.g. email clients) or authentication backend to various services (such as Samba, where it is used to emulate a domain controller, or Linux system authentication, where it replaces /etc/passwd) and basically holds the user data.

"mimycri is a registered non-for-profit organization in Germany. In a diverse team, newcomers and Berliners make history tangible by working together. We are upcycling broken refugee rubber boats into high quality bags.

The idea for mimycri was born on the Greek island Chios where the co-founders – Vera and Nora – volunteered several times since 2015 welcoming people arriving at the shores. This experience motivated Vera and Nora to stay engaged and do something.

mimycri is about a change in perspective. It demonstrates that when we start to see things in a different way, a whole new world of possibilities can open up. We look for the good in the bad. We envision a world in which we help and support each other, just because we can – and because it feels good.
Sustainability: We are using what is already there and give new life to rejected material. The overall setup of the project is designed to be environmentally, socially and economically independent.

Integration: We are convinced that social and economic participation are key to successful integration."

"From the educational world and now turned towards popular education, Framasoft is above all a network of projects, of which the first, directory, dates back to 2001.

These projects are run by people working together with the same desire: promote digital freedoms.

Respect for the fundamental freedoms of users, guaranteed by legal contracts (the free licenses), is at the heart of the librist movement and ensures that the human remains in control of the digital tool.

The Framasoft’s goal is to offer, mainly online, a set of concrete and practical tools to facilitate adoption:

of free software (directory, USB sticks, installer…);
of free cultural creations (blog, translation, publishing house…);
of free services (more than 30 free services in the project De-google-ify Internet).

Presented as a "gateway to the Free World", the network Framasoft wants to position itself as a bridge between the librarian community and the general public."

One of their projects is for example PeerTube, kind of a free, decentralised Youtube.

SMART (by Sustainable Food Systems GmbH)
About (from FIBL):
"The term "sustainability" is used inflationary and inconsistently. Hundreds of sustainability frameworks have been developed and more and more companies have "sustainable" products on offer. For consumers and buyers it is very difficult to tell whether a farm or a company are actually operating sustainably or not. In addition, farmers and companies in the agricultural and food sector face the question how to assess their sustainability performance in a comparable way and to communicate it in a credible way, without pursuing green-washing.

Therefore the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL has chosen to develop SMART – Sustainability Monitoring and Assessment RouTine – a method that allows farms and companies in the food sector to assess their sustainability in a credible, transparent and comparable manner. SMART is the world’s first tool, which is fully consistent with the SAFA-Guidelines (UN FAO Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture systems) and provides an efficient manner to apply them in practice.

However, SMART is not a new standard, certification system or label but solely an analysis and assessment instrument. It therefore does not compete with existing standards and certificates, but is a useful supplement.

In order to provide SMART sustainability assessment services FiBL founded the spin-off Sustainable Food Systems GmbH (SFS) which now is the owner of the lincense rights and rights of use of SMART. The SFS is owned by FiBL Switzerland, Germany and Austria."

The “Forests for Fashion” exhibit brings together the work of many young designers, all inspired to use forest-derived materials for their creations.

Alongside many innovative and creative designs, is a capsule collection by Spanish designer Ms. María Lafuente using the world’s first fabrics certified by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), which can be traced back to sustainably managed forests.

Almost 65 per cent of global fabric consumption consists of synthetic fibres derived from fossil fuels, whilst the majority of the remainder is made up of cotton, a water- and pesticide-intensive crop. Renewable and responsibly sourced wood fibres are part of the solution to transform fashion into a more sustainable industry.

Forest-based materials need to originate from sustainably managed forests and to be produced in a sustainable and ethical manner.
Visitors can also learn about the connection between forests, fashion and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by exploring the ‘SDG cubes’."

Global Ecovillage Network - Community for a Regenerative World
"The Global Ecovillage Network (GEN) catalyzes communities for a regenerative world. GEN is a growing network of regenerative communities and initiatives that bridge cultures, countries, and continents.

GEN builds bridges between policy-makers, governments, NGOs, academics, entrepreneurs, activists, community networks and ecologically-minded individuals across the globe in order to develop strategies for a global transition to resilient communities and cultures.
An ecovillage is an intentional, traditional or urban community that is consciously designed through locally owned, participatory processes in all 5 dimensions of sustainability (social, culture, ecology, economy and whole systems design) to regenerate their social and natural environments.

Ecovillages are living laboratories pioneering beautiful alternatives and innovative solutions. They are rural or urban settlements with vibrant social structures, vastly diverse, yet united in their actions towards low-impact, high-quality lifestyles.
GEN is composed of 5 regional networks, spanning the globe. The network is made up of approximately 10,000 communities and related projects where people are living together in greater ecological harmony.

Some network members include large networks like Sarvodaya (2,000 active sustainable villages in Sri Lanka); the Federation of Damanhur in Italy and Nimbin in Australia; as well as small rural ecovillages like Gaia Asociación in Argentina and Huehuecoyotl in Mexico.

It also includes urban rejuvenation projects like Los Angeles EcoVillage and Christiania in Copenhagen; permaculture design sites such as Crystal Waters, Australia, Cochabamba, Bolivia and Barus, Brazil; and educational centres such as Findhorn in Scotland, Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales, Earthlands in Massachusetts, and many more."

Started in 1995. For example the Switzerland-based ecovillage Schweibenalp is member of GEN Europe.

Bethany Williams
Sustainable designer with 'Breadline' up-cycling collection collaboration with Tesco.

"Bethany Williams believes that social and environmental issues go hand in hand and through exploring the connection between these issues we may find innovative design solutions to sustainability.

We want not just to comment on a community, but work in their social spaces to try to create a change through furthering economic gain for charity. By using social capital, intellectual and labour intensive skills we aim to create a profit, which will be given to connected charities, continuing the cycle of exchange.Through collaboration with communities and charities we hope to create a collection embedded with real people and hope to cause a real effect in the social space we engage with.

The current collection ‘Breadline’ particularly wants to highlight and help find solutions to the hidden hunger in the UK, specifically working along side the Vauxhall Food Bank and Tesco to achieve this.We have developed an exchange of fresh fruit and vegetables (from Tesco) for waste items from the food banks users household. We have developed a collection using these waste materials, plus recycled cardboard and ‘Tesco everyday value’ branded organic prints, all donated by Tesco. We will be donating 30% of profits to The Vauxhall food bank, continuing the cycle of exchange. Through traditional hand crafted techniques and working with local craftsmen / women, we have developed the surface of these waste materials to create hand crafted woven, printed, knitted and embroidered materials.

Every one of our garments is 100% sustainable and made in the UK, even down to the buttons which are hand crafted in the Lake District from our collaborators own planting of trees.

We provide an alternative system for fashion production, as we believe fashions’ reflection upon the world can create positive change."

Ocean Protocol — A Decentralized Data Exchange Protocol to Unlock Data for AI
"Society is becoming increasingly reliant on data, especially with the advent of AI. However, a small handful of organizations with both massive data assets and AI capabilities have become powerful with control that is a danger to a free and open society.

Ocean Protocol aims to unlock data, for more equitable outcomes for users of data, using a thoughtful application of both technology and governance.
It is a decentralized protocol and network of artificial intelligence (AI) data/services. It incentivizes for a vast supply of relevant AI data/services. This network helps to power AI data/service marketplaces, as well as public commons data. The heart of Ocean’s network is a new construction: a Curated Proofs Market. CPMs bridge predicted relevance with actual relevance of each AI service, by having curation markets for cryptographic proofs (e.g. proof of data availability)."

Ocean Protocol is supported by Ocean Foundation, which is a Singapore-based

Circular Economy Lab
"Our mission is to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon, circular economy in Canada and beyond.

Launched by The Natural Step Canada in 2016, our unique process brings together public and private sector leaders from different sectors and value chains to co-develop and implement circular economy solutions. These solutions ultimately eliminate waste, improve productivity, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and foster value-creation and innovation.

We work collaboratively with our partners to:

- Define the circular economy opportunity: We help governments and businesses understand the opportunities, barriers and strategies for advancing the circular economy within their organizations, their value chains and the province as a whole.

- Accelerate promising ideas: We work with our partners to identify, incubate and scale circular economy initiatives. These include:
- Strategic, collaborative initiatives to address systemic barriers that individual organizations can’t tackle alone
- “Innovation moonshots” with the potential to transform the economy,
New or improved circular products, services, policies, business models and strategies.

- Build momentum for change: We increase circular economy awareness, understanding and commitment through strategic research, communications, education and engagement activities for stakeholders across Canada.

CEIL uses the proven Sustainability Transition Lab (STL) process developed by The Natural Step Canada. The STL process brings a genuinely new, pioneering approach to dealing with complex problems that require new levels of public, private and not-for-profit sector collaboration. Its innovation and strength lies in combining three areas of practice that have each been successful in their own right:

- A science and systems-based approach to sustainable development that has been rigorously tested and refined over 25 years of international application in businesses, governments and communities,
- The change lab methodology that emerged from the hard-won negotiations that ended South Africa’s apartheid, and
- Leading edge, proven public engagement strategies anchored in network theory and digital media.

Natural Factory
"Collects examples to inspire us to ‘let nature be our factory’ in contemporary, sustainable ways. It’s a diverse selection of interesting examples to get the creative thoughts going, rather than an exhaustive academic database.

Designers, makers, architects, engineers … anyone involved in creating the things we need; are there ways you can better harness the waste-free circular economy offered by natural processes and organisms to create radically more sustainable solutions? This might be looking for contemporary ways of using natural materials, or even better innovating ways to ‘grow’ entire products – really letting nature be our factory.

Entries include drones grown from mushroom mycelium, bacterially produced biodegradable plastics and boutique furniture grown in a carbon-negative ‘orchard’, as well as more familiar natural materials and traditional craft processes which could be re-purposed or developed.

We are also including entries from the rapidly developing field of biotech / bio-hacking, which some believe holds the potential to provide materials and processes sustainably by interfacing with or carefully modifying living organisms (the jury is out on the long-term sustainability in some cases, but better to engage and be aware).

This is a voluntary project started by designer/maker/biologist friends from from several countries interested in exploring this field together.

Experts: China won't meet 2030 air quality standards by solely enforcing end-of-pipe controls (Original: 专家:仅靠末端控制,2030年空气质量无法达标)
Summary by Lauri Myllyvirta from Greenpeace China:
"Important Qinghua study: 30% of Chinese cities can't meet air quality standards with end-of-pipe controls only - China needs to cut coal to 35% of total energy, end small-scale coal use, cut heavy industry output by 25% and CO2 by 17% to meet even current air quality standards."

Start-ups shouldn't try to be unicorns—they should be zebras
"The current technology and venture capital structure is broken. It rewards quantity over quality, consumption over creation, quick exits over sustainable growth, and shareholder profit over shared prosperity. It chases after “unicorn” companies bent on “disruption” rather than supporting businesses that repair, cultivate, and connect."

Excerpts (slightly modified by HAG to include non-internet companies too):
"Unicorns stand for exponential growth instead of sustainable prosperity in case of Zebra [...] monopoly vs plurality [...] competition vs cooperation [...] more vs enough/better [...] quantity-metric vs quality-metric [...] customer acquisition vs customer success"

Common challenges facing which zebra companies are facing:

"1. The problem isn’t product, it’s process.
(help institutions adopt, deploy, and measure the success of innovation, apps or otherwise)

2. Zebra companies are often started by women and other underrepresented founders.
(start 30 percent of businesses, yet receive only 5 percent of small-business loans and 3 percent of venture capital)

3. You can’t be it if you can’t see it.
(lack heroes to emulate, so they default to the “growth at all costs” model)

4. Zebras are stuck between two outdated paradigms, nonprofit and for-profit.
(existing imperfect structures like hybrid for-profit/nonprofit, Public Benefit Corps, B-Corps, L3Cs can be prohibitively expensive)

5. Impact investing’s thesis is detrimentally narrow and risk-averse.
(mostly limited to verticals like clean technology, microfinance, or global health)"

The Global Land Outlook (GLO)
"The loss in both the quality and quantity of healthy and productive land resources is an immediate global concern, especially in developing countries and those with a high proportion of fragile and vulnerable drylands. As a symbol and global champion of such concerns, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) recognizes that halting and reversing land degradation is one of the key sustainable development priorities for most countries.

In response to this global challenge, the UNCCD secretariat and its partners identified the need to create a strategic communications publication and platform, entitled the Global Land Outlook (GLO), in order to facilitate insightful debate and discourse on a new and transformative vision for land management policies, planning and practices at global, regional and national scales.

The first edition of the GLO, published in September 2017 in both print and digital formats, was made possible with supporting partners such as the European Commission, the Governments of Korea, Switzerland and the Netherlands, and the United Nations Development Program. A GLO Steering Committee, composed primarily of representatives from the partner organizations listed below, was instrumental in guiding its development."

The Natural Step - Accelerate the transition to a sustainable society
NPO founded in founded in Sweden in 1989 by Karl-Henrik Robèrt.

They attempt to draft the following definition of sustainability:

"The Four System Conditions of a Sustainable Society - A Science-Based Definition of Sustainability:

-> Framework For Strategic Sustainable Development revolves around a robust, science-based definition of sustainability. “Robust” means that the principles contained in this definition are both necessary and enough to achieve sustainability. They are also applicable to any activity at any scale and they don’t overlap (each principle covers its own domain).
Scientifically ... four system conditions ... basic sustainability principles:

In a sustainable society, nature is not subject to systematically increasing …

1. … concentrations of substances from the earth’s crust (such as fossil CO2 and heavy metals),

2. … concentrations of substances produces by society (such as antibiotics and endocrine disruptors),
3. … degradation by physical means (such as deforestation and draining of groundwater tables),

4. ... in that society … there are no structural obstacles to people’s health, influence, competence, impartiality and meaning."

They developed the ABCD PROCESS to help interested companies to apply the rules for sustainability to their core business model, to improve long-term value creation. Steps:

A. Awareness: ‘whole-systems’ definition to build a vision

B. Baseline assessment: Conduct a sustainability ‘gap analysis’ of the major flows and impacts of the organisation. Assist organisations to identify critical sustainability issues, their business implications, and strategic opportunities for change.

C. Creative solutions: Innovative ways to realize vision by re-shaping mission, strategy and organization.

D. Devise a plan: Milestone plan with first steps, “low hanging fruits” and longer term planning."
