AURELIE FONTAN STUDIO
Excerpts from fashioncrossover:
"Specialised in sustainability and circular design, French sustainable Haute Couture designer Aurelie Fontan established her label in London after graduating from the Edinburgh College of Art. With a Fine Art background, Aurelie pushes technological innovation and scientific discoveries to the forefront of her design process, combining avant-garde aesthetics and sustainable manufacturing methods.

With most of her fabrics made by hand and from scratch, she advocates for a technocraftivism that references her Parisian roots - couture craftsmanship - and a real focus on forward-thinking techniques - laser cutting, bio-mimicry, etc. Her collection TENSEGRITY tackles the issue of single-use plastic items, through upcycled cable ties that replace traditional seaming methods. This allows each piece to be easily recyclable. She also grew a dress from bacterias that are 100% biodegradable and compostable."

Health effects of dietary risks in 195 countries, 1990–2017: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017
Large international study published in Lancet which figured that more important than reducing "bad food" is the focus on eating more "good food" (fruits, nuts, vegetables).

Abstract:
"In 2017, 11 million deaths and 255 million DALYs (disability-adjusted life years) were attributable to dietary risk factors. High intake of sodium, low intake of whole grains , and low intake of fruits were the leading dietary risk factors for deaths and DALYs globally and in many countries. Dietary data were from mixed sources and were not available for all countries, increasing the statistical uncertainty of our estimates."

Interpretation:
"This study provides a comprehensive picture of the potential impact of suboptimal diet on NCD (non-communicable disease) mortality and morbidity, highlighting the need for improving diet across nations. Our findings will inform implementation of evidence-based dietary interventions and provide a platform for evaluation of their impact on human health annually."

transversal
About:
"transversal is an anti-peer-review platform. We object to the increasing pressure to domesticate styles, forms and formats, to valorize and self-valorize through the usual mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion in the publication industries.

transversal explicitly supports copyleft practices. All contents, both original texts and translations, are subject to the copyright of their authors, but may be copied and reproduced by any means for any kind of non-commercial and non-institutional use and distribution, whether private or public.

transversal also explicitly supports the use of gender-inclusive language, both in original texts and translations. Exceptions are the responsibility of the individual authors. However, due to the respective structures of the different languages, but also due to different ways in which linguistic gender-sensitivity is developed by authors and translators, a variety of gender-inclusive language usages may appear."

Fueling Open Source Innovation and Sustainability - CommunityBridge
About:
"CommunityBridge is a platform created by the Linux Foundation (LF) to empower developers — and the individuals and organizations who support them — to advance sustainability, security, and diversity in open source technology."

One of its main purpose is to help with funding. It includes some security-related services and a means for connecting developers with mentors.

Statement (https://sfconservancy.org/blog/2019/mar/13/lf-community-bridge/) from the Software Freedom Conservancy on this new initiative:

1. It's closed-source, shall make it open-source (FOSS)

2. No charitable tax deduction and unsafe governance (LF is not a charity, but a trade association — designed to serve the common business interest of its paid members, who control its Board of Directors)

3. LF's system is similar to Patreon and other platforms in that it is a hands-off system that takes a cut of the money and provides minimal financial services.

SFC's conclusion:
"This new LF system is probably just right for FOSS projects that (a) prefer to use single-point-of-failure, proprietary software rather than FOSS for their infrastructure, (b) do not want to operate in a way that is dedicated to the public good, and (c) have very minimal fiscal sponsorship needs, such as occasional reimbursements of project expenses."

one earth
About:
"One Earth (OE) sees a not-so-distant future when humanity and the natural world coexist in harmony. Instead of pockets of nature in a human-controlled world, we envision a thriving wilderness dotted by green cities of the future. By 2050, more than two-thirds of the world’s population will live in cities, creating an unprecedented opportunity to protect our natural resources, while providing access to clean air and water, healthy food, and sustainable livelihoods for all people.
[...]
OE Campaign plan that tackles three of the world’s greatest problems — climate change, biodiversity loss, and food and water security. It seeks to ensure the resilience of our biosphere through a three-pillar strategy: 100% clean, renewable energy; conservation of 50% of our lands and oceans; and a shift to regenerative, carbon-negative agriculture globally by 2050.
[...]
The OE Climate Model is the first to show the enormous social, environmental, and economic benefits of a rapid transition to 100% renewable energy combined with a portfolio of Natural Climate Solutions (NCS) that achieve an estimated 500 billion tonnes of negative emissions, enough to bring our climate back into balance.
[...]
Geospatial computations conducted in the environmental sector, incorporating a wide range of data sets to create a global map called the OE Safety Net, which shows how we can secure the integrity of our biosphere. The map is organized by 190 bioregions: groupings of terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecoregions that allow for an analysis of the interdependencies between energy production, environmental conservation, and food and water access in each region."

Pachacuti Hats (and their founder Carry Somers)
About:
"Carry Somers MA FRSA is a British fashion designer, social entrepreneur and fashion campaigner. She is founder of the global movement Fashion Revolution and founder and director of Pachacuti.
[...]
Somers founded fair trade hat brand Pachacuti in 1992. Pachacuti was the first company to be certified under the World Fair Trade Organization Sustainable Fair Trade Management System, the first International certification of a fair trade, sustainable production process. The WFTO certification "guaranteed practices, procedures and processes that demonstrate social, economic and environmental responsibility throughout the supply chain". Pachacuti's products were labelled Certified Fair Trade by WFTO UK0001-2009 to 2012.

Somers piloted the European Union Geo Fair Trade project from 2009–12 which traced products from the straw to the Panama hat weavers. 60 social, economic, geolocalisation and environmental indicators tracked annual changes. The pilot project mapped the GPS co-ordinates of Pachacuti's 154 weavers' houses in Ecuador, the parcels of land where the Carludovica Palmata grows, and the co-ordinates of the associations who harvest and process the straw.

At London Fashion Week in September 2013, People Tree Ltd. and Pachacuti were the first brands globally to launch the WFTO Fair Trade Guarantee System label.
[...]
Somers is founder of Fashion Revolution, a global movement which arose from the Rana Plaza garment factory disaster in Bangladesh on 24 April 2013. Fashion Revolution Day takes place globally on 24 April each year and in 2016 grew into Fashion Revolution Week. Somers organised roundtable debates at the House of Commons and the House of Lords on ethics, sustainability and transparency in the fashion supply chain including Fashion Question Time in February 2015 and April 2016 and Ethical Fashion 2020:a New Vision for Transparency in June 2015. There are Fashion Revolution teams in almost 100 countries around the world.
[...]
Somers speaks nationally and internationally on Fashion Revolution, fair trade, entrepreneurship, sustainability, fashion and certification. She lectures on cruise ships in Latin America and the Caribbean on textiles, traditional dress, artisan handicrafts, indigenous peoples and fair trade.
[...]
Somers wrote the introduction to "Fixing Fashion" which looks at the impacts of consumer culture's addiction to disposable fashion, published in 2015 by New Society.
[...]
She is co-author of the book Working Ethically, which aims to help business owners find an ethical strategy which will benefit their suppliers, community and environment. She contributed a chapter to the book, published in 2014, Sustainable Luxury and Social Entrepreneurship"

Les jardins de la grelinette | Bio-intensive farm
Intro by organic-market.info:
"A small organic farm in St-Armand, QC, Canada. There, Maude-Hélène and Jean-Martin Fortier have been cultivating one hectare of land for a good ten years, growing 40 varieties of vegetables that they market directly - and live well with. "The key to success is to move away from a tractor-oriented approach to a people-oriented approach," said the Fortiers at a conference.

Their microfarm is one of the best-known examples of new agricultural concepts, “which have impressive effects due to their systemic approach. They are very productive on small areas and are called bio-intensive agriculture, market gardening or micro-farms,” writes the Stiftung Ökologie&Landbau (SÖL) for explanation. “Inspired by agricultural ecology and permaculture, they are economically profitable, ecologically valuable and socially respectful. Their low investment costs make these concepts particularly interesting for young people wishing to enter the agricultural sector.”

CSAware by LocalHarvest | CSA Software - CSA Management
About:
"LocalHarvest has been helping family farmers build strong businesses since we launched our national directory in 2000. We have become a trusted marketing partner for our membership of over 25,000 farms and farmers markets. And it works: over 6 million people a year come to LocalHarvest to find out where to get local food in their communities.

Our mission is to connect people looking for good food with the farmers who produce it. We provide online tools that help small farmers thrive. In 2009, seeing that our CSAs were growing, but perhaps not as fast as they might, we began building a set of administrative and e-commerce tools for CSAs and food hubs: CSAware was born.

Then we integrated CSAware with the LocalHarvest directory to give CSAware users top billing — potential members searching for local food on LocalHarvest can click directly to your online store to sign up. Those 6 million people who use LocalHarvest? A few of them will find their way to your business.
[...]
With CSAware, we make the administrative end of running a CSA smooth and straightforward. That leaves you more time to focus on growing great food, building your soil, and expanding your business."

Solar Impulse Foundation - Bridging the gap between ecology and economy
About:
"One of the first to envision ecology through the lens of profitability, Bertrand Piccard has always advocated that protection of the environment would become a reality only if it was perceived as economically viable and requiring no financial or behavioural sacrifices. He actively speaks out against the absurdity of old and polluting devices and systems, and promotes the benefits of new existing efficient technologies and solutions to motivate governments and industries to take action. A way to prove that solving climate change – rather than an expensive problem – is a fantastic market opportunity."

One of the main programs of the Solar Impulse Foundation is their Label:

"For the first time a label proves the economic profitability of solutions that protect the environment
[...]
selecting 1,000 solutions that protect the environment in a profitable way and awarding them the Solar Impulse Efficient Solutions Label.

This label serves as a new and credible symbol that can be applied to products, processes and services and serves as a guarantee of quality to those looking to implement clean solutions, and affords a competitive edge to the innovators behind them.

Assessed by independent experts for their technological feasibility, environmental and socio-economic benefits, and economic profitability, a portfolio of these solutions will be brought to decision-makers to encourage them to adopt much more ambitious environmental targets and energy policies."

Recycling Technologies
About:
"Developed a machine, the RT7000, to recycle plastics in a more commercially attractive way. RT7000 turns plastic waste into a product they call Plaxx®, for use in processes for making new plastic and wax products."

Can recycle of up to 90% of residual plastics with these five modules (each fitting into a ship container):

Module 1: Thermal Cracker
A fluidised bed containing of hot thermo-granules continuously circulating from/to the Regenerator
Heat transferred into the plastic cracks long-chain molecules into shorter-chain hydrocarbons
Hydrocarbon vapour is treated to remove solids and refined to remove unwanted chemicals
Controlling the temperature and flow allows different volumes of individual Plaxx fractions to be produced.

Module 2: Regenerator
Light hydrocarbon gas (e.g. methane, ethane) from the distillation modules arrives into the Regenerator
Used as a fuel to heat the thermo-granules to 850-900°C for circulation back to the Thermal Cracker.

Module 3: Plaxx Distillation
Hydrocarbon vapour from the Thermal Cracker is condensed into Plaxx and discharged to storage.

Module 4: Light Gas Distillation
Light hydrocarbon gas is distilled and fed into the Regenerator.

Module 5: Flue Gas Treatment
Any remaining gas in the Regenerator is passed into the Flue Gas Treatment module for clean-up already available on site.

Plaxx is a ultra low sulphur oil, cut into four fractions (Petrochemical Feedstock, Low Sulphur Fuel Oils, Petroleum Waxes) which have applications in multiple industrial sectors and can be sold individually.

Note from industry insider:
There are quite a few companies doing it (esp. the USA over many years) but scaling has been an issue. The whole case effectively is an undertaking of doing less bad - its end of pipe is not really getting to the root of the problem. Ergo: It's better than doing nothing.

MINDFASHION.today
About:
"With MINDFASHION.today Janne Baetsen presents a unique ‘Human Innovation’ approach to fashion design, cultural economics, psychology, technology and branding, to contribute to a more profound insight into relationships, identities and communities in today’s world of fashion. How? By (re)establishing the connection between the clothes, the creator and the wearer, and questioning what we (need to) value, what we wear as well as how we dispose of it. Focussing not only on clothing but also on the complexity of human behaviour, innovation, experience and communication across all aspects of fashion, to generate deep understanding of the current and future (creative) economy.

The aim is to reveal the significance of fashion as a way of communicating, and identify existing issues in the fashion world that can be explained using a holistic view of disciplines, to predict, express, address and ultimately change behaviour for the better."

SMART (by Sustainable Food Systems GmbH)
About (from FIBL):
"The term "sustainability" is used inflationary and inconsistently. Hundreds of sustainability frameworks have been developed and more and more companies have "sustainable" products on offer. For consumers and buyers it is very difficult to tell whether a farm or a company are actually operating sustainably or not. In addition, farmers and companies in the agricultural and food sector face the question how to assess their sustainability performance in a comparable way and to communicate it in a credible way, without pursuing green-washing.

Therefore the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL has chosen to develop SMART – Sustainability Monitoring and Assessment RouTine – a method that allows farms and companies in the food sector to assess their sustainability in a credible, transparent and comparable manner. SMART is the world’s first tool, which is fully consistent with the SAFA-Guidelines (UN FAO Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture systems) and provides an efficient manner to apply them in practice.

However, SMART is not a new standard, certification system or label but solely an analysis and assessment instrument. It therefore does not compete with existing standards and certificates, but is a useful supplement.

In order to provide SMART sustainability assessment services FiBL founded the spin-off Sustainable Food Systems GmbH (SFS) which now is the owner of the lincense rights and rights of use of SMART. The SFS is owned by FiBL Switzerland, Germany and Austria."

Fashionable Forests at the High Level Political Forum | UN DESA
Excerpts:
"Forest fashion takes centre stage at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, during the 2018 High Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development.

The “Forests for Fashion” exhibit brings together the work of many young designers, all inspired to use forest-derived materials for their creations.

Alongside many innovative and creative designs, is a capsule collection by Spanish designer Ms. María Lafuente using the world’s first fabrics certified by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), which can be traced back to sustainably managed forests.

Almost 65 per cent of global fabric consumption consists of synthetic fibres derived from fossil fuels, whilst the majority of the remainder is made up of cotton, a water- and pesticide-intensive crop. Renewable and responsibly sourced wood fibres are part of the solution to transform fashion into a more sustainable industry.

Forest-based materials need to originate from sustainably managed forests and to be produced in a sustainable and ethical manner.
[...]
Visitors can also learn about the connection between forests, fashion and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by exploring the ‘SDG cubes’."

About:
"The Global Ecovillage Network (GEN) catalyzes communities for a regenerative world. GEN is a growing network of regenerative communities and initiatives that bridge cultures, countries, and continents.

GEN builds bridges between policy-makers, governments, NGOs, academics, entrepreneurs, activists, community networks and ecologically-minded individuals across the globe in order to develop strategies for a global transition to resilient communities and cultures.
[...]
An ecovillage is an intentional, traditional or urban community that is consciously designed through locally owned, participatory processes in all 5 dimensions of sustainability (social, culture, ecology, economy and whole systems design) to regenerate their social and natural environments.

Ecovillages are living laboratories pioneering beautiful alternatives and innovative solutions. They are rural or urban settlements with vibrant social structures, vastly diverse, yet united in their actions towards low-impact, high-quality lifestyles.
[...]
GEN is composed of 5 regional networks, spanning the globe. The network is made up of approximately 10,000 communities and related projects where people are living together in greater ecological harmony.

Some network members include large networks like Sarvodaya (2,000 active sustainable villages in Sri Lanka); the Federation of Damanhur in Italy and Nimbin in Australia; as well as small rural ecovillages like Gaia Asociación in Argentina and Huehuecoyotl in Mexico.

It also includes urban rejuvenation projects like Los Angeles EcoVillage and Christiania in Copenhagen; permaculture design sites such as Crystal Waters, Australia, Cochabamba, Bolivia and Barus, Brazil; and educational centres such as Findhorn in Scotland, Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales, Earthlands in Massachusetts, and many more."

Started in 1995. For example the Switzerland-based ecovillage Schweibenalp is member of GEN Europe.

LOW-TECH MAGAZINE
About:
"Low-tech Magazine refuses to assume that every problem has a high-tech solution. A simple, sensible, but nevertheless controversial message; high-tech has become the idol of our society.

Instead, Low-tech Magazine talks about the potential of past and often forgotten knowledge and technologies when it comes to designing a sustainable society. Sometimes, these low-tech solutions can be copied without any changes.

More often, interesting possibilities arise when you combine old technology with new knowledge and new materials, or when you apply old concepts and traditional knowledge to modern technology.

We also keep an eye on what is happening in the developing world, where resource constraints often lead to inventive, low-tech solutions.

Underlying the common view of a high-tech sustainable society is the belief that we don't have to change our affluent lifestyle. However, changing our lifestyle does not mean that we have to go back to the middle ages and give up all modern comforts. A downsized, sustainable industrial civilization is very well possible - and more fun, too."

Permaculture or Spermaculture?
Excerpt:
"... permaculture as a “young movement” that lacks self-awareness and criticism in many ways. While Bill Mollison founded and introduced permaculture as a scientific movement, today’s generation of permaculturists are continually pushing for the inclusion of social dynamics, including gender dynamics, in discussions. If it’s care of the earth, care of people, and sharing the surplus, human dynamics have to be a part of that and the social analysis needs to be a part of that."

Bethany Williams
Sustainable designer with 'Breadline' up-cycling collection collaboration with Tesco.

About:
"Bethany Williams believes that social and environmental issues go hand in hand and through exploring the connection between these issues we may find innovative design solutions to sustainability.

We want not just to comment on a community, but work in their social spaces to try to create a change through furthering economic gain for charity. By using social capital, intellectual and labour intensive skills we aim to create a profit, which will be given to connected charities, continuing the cycle of exchange.Through collaboration with communities and charities we hope to create a collection embedded with real people and hope to cause a real effect in the social space we engage with.

The current collection ‘Breadline’ particularly wants to highlight and help find solutions to the hidden hunger in the UK, specifically working along side the Vauxhall Food Bank and Tesco to achieve this.We have developed an exchange of fresh fruit and vegetables (from Tesco) for waste items from the food banks users household. We have developed a collection using these waste materials, plus recycled cardboard and ‘Tesco everyday value’ branded organic prints, all donated by Tesco. We will be donating 30% of profits to The Vauxhall food bank, continuing the cycle of exchange. Through traditional hand crafted techniques and working with local craftsmen / women, we have developed the surface of these waste materials to create hand crafted woven, printed, knitted and embroidered materials.

Every one of our garments is 100% sustainable and made in the UK, even down to the buttons which are hand crafted in the Lake District from our collaborators own planting of trees.

We provide an alternative system for fashion production, as we believe fashions’ reflection upon the world can create positive change."

Ocean Protocol — A Decentralized Data Exchange Protocol to Unlock Data for AI
About:
"Society is becoming increasingly reliant on data, especially with the advent of AI. However, a small handful of organizations with both massive data assets and AI capabilities have become powerful with control that is a danger to a free and open society.

Ocean Protocol aims to unlock data, for more equitable outcomes for users of data, using a thoughtful application of both technology and governance.
[...]
It is a decentralized protocol and network of artificial intelligence (AI) data/services. It incentivizes for a vast supply of relevant AI data/services. This network helps to power AI data/service marketplaces, as well as public commons data. The heart of Ocean’s network is a new construction: a Curated Proofs Market. CPMs bridge predicted relevance with actual relevance of each AI service, by having curation markets for cryptographic proofs (e.g. proof of data availability)."

Ocean Protocol is supported by Ocean Foundation, which is a Singapore-based
non-profit foundation. Ocean Foundation’s mandate is to:
(a)
development of the Ocean Protocol and activate a community of
stakeholders;
(b)
provide guidance for the development of the Ocean Protocol; and
(c)
support the growth, and governance of a vibrant data exchange network
and ecosystem based on the Ocean Protocol.

HIGHER STUDIO | London fashion rental
About:
"We are a progressive, sustainable fashion concept based in East London. Offering a curated library of new and archive stock, we provide a rotating wardrobe free from a consumer hangover. We believe that needing to buy in order to wear, forces consumers as well as creatives to compromise experimentation and quality for commerce. When free from the commitment, burden and cost of ownership, people can wear and be what they want.

higher.studio’s mission is to offer uncompromising innovative design and to allow creators to profit from greater emotional and physical durability. Crucially, we believe in a new system driven by the longevity of resources rather than quantity sold. We work with brands and partners to implement this change.

The Repair Association
About:
"The Repair Association, previously the Digital Right to Repair Coalition, was formed in 2013. The Association represents everyone involved in repair of technology—from DIY hobbyists and independent repair technicians, to environmental organizations and the aftermarket.
[...]
But more and more common goods now come with restrictions on your ability to do all that — or even hire someone you trust to do it for you. Some products even come with contracts and mandatory licenses that interfere with your right to resell your product.

A free, independent market for repair and reuse is more efficient, more competitive, and better for consumers. Repair helps create local jobs, and repair and reuse benefits the environment by reducing end-of-life electronic products. The freedom to maintain, innovate, and improve upon our products is imperative.
[...]
As consumers, we have the right to the following from the companies that we support:

Information: The documentation, software, and legal ability we need to repair our own products -- or choose someone we trust to do it for us.

Parts + Tools: Fair access to service parts and tools, including diagnostics.

Unlocking for Repair and Reuse: We should be able to unlock and modify the software and firmware that is required to operate our products.

Unencumbered Resale: We should be able resell our products (including the software needed to operate them).

Repairable Products: Designers should integrate design for repair and recycling principles into product development."

Circular Economy Lab
About:
"Our mission is to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon, circular economy in Canada and beyond.

Launched by The Natural Step Canada in 2016, our unique process brings together public and private sector leaders from different sectors and value chains to co-develop and implement circular economy solutions. These solutions ultimately eliminate waste, improve productivity, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and foster value-creation and innovation.

We work collaboratively with our partners to:

- Define the circular economy opportunity: We help governments and businesses understand the opportunities, barriers and strategies for advancing the circular economy within their organizations, their value chains and the province as a whole.

- Accelerate promising ideas: We work with our partners to identify, incubate and scale circular economy initiatives. These include:
- Strategic, collaborative initiatives to address systemic barriers that individual organizations can’t tackle alone
- “Innovation moonshots” with the potential to transform the economy,
New or improved circular products, services, policies, business models and strategies.

- Build momentum for change: We increase circular economy awareness, understanding and commitment through strategic research, communications, education and engagement activities for stakeholders across Canada.

[...]

CEIL uses the proven Sustainability Transition Lab (STL) process developed by The Natural Step Canada. The STL process brings a genuinely new, pioneering approach to dealing with complex problems that require new levels of public, private and not-for-profit sector collaboration. Its innovation and strength lies in combining three areas of practice that have each been successful in their own right:

- A science and systems-based approach to sustainable development that has been rigorously tested and refined over 25 years of international application in businesses, governments and communities,
- The change lab methodology that emerged from the hard-won negotiations that ended South Africa’s apartheid, and
- Leading edge, proven public engagement strategies anchored in network theory and digital media.
