systemd - ArchWiki
systemd is a suite of basic building blocks for a Linux system. It provides a system and service manager that runs as PID 1 and starts the rest of the system. systemd provides aggressive parallelization capabilities, uses socket and D-Bus activation for starting services, offers on-demand starting of daemons, keeps track of processes using Linux control groups, maintains mount and automount points, and implements an elaborate transactional dependency-based service control logic. systemd supports SysV and LSB init scripts and works as a replacement for sysvinit. Other parts include a logging daemon, utilities to control basic system configuration like the hostname, date, locale, maintain a list of logged-in users and running containers and virtual machines, system accounts, runtime directories and settings, and daemons to manage simple network configuration, network time synchronization, log forwarding, and name resolution.

xubuntu - Why does light-locker keep the screen black after unlock? - Ask Ubuntu
Q: A Xubuntu 16.04 fully patched machine with a freshly created user wont let me unlock after using light-locker to lock my screen (regardless if lock was activated manually or via timeout). The screen remains black (but powered) on correct password entry

Killing light-locker from tty1 will reveal the desktop then (and consequently prevents further locking). [...]

A: TL;DR: light-locker keeps the screen black if systemd cannot read /proc

* light-locker depends on dbus providing IPC.
* dbus depends on systemd-logind providing session information.

xfce - Xubuntu: black screen after lock screen (light-locker, lightdm, logind, xfce4-power-manager) - Ask Ubuntu
Q: [...] The problem is that when my laptop goes into lock screen (or maybe suspend but I always disable that in power management options so it shouldn't), then it is quite common that I am not able to login back to it. Screen stays black after opening lid and pressing a button. [...]

A: The issue is due to lightlocker and XFCE no longer playing well.

I was able to fix this issue by upgrading to XFCE 4.14 from the Xubuntu staging PPA, removing light-locker and installing xfce4-screensaver. Please note I did this from a clean install of 18.04.3, so you might need to restore any changed settings.

Git - Environment Variables
Git always runs inside a bash shell, and uses a number of shell environment variables to determine how it behaves. Occasionally, it comes in handy to know what these are, and how they can be used to make Git behave the way you want it to. This isn’t an exhaustive list of all the environment variables Git pays attention to, but we’ll cover the most useful.

Q: I need to change my user password. Do I need to take any extra steps for my encrypted home directory to become inaccessible with my old password and only accessible with my new password?

A: There is no need to re-encrypt your home directory, and no further steps need to be taken.

Your home directory is not directly encrypted with your password. Instead, the passphrase used to encrypt the home directory is itself encrypted with your password.

When you change your password, the home directory passphrase is re-encrypted with your new password, so you should have continued access to your files with the new password. [...]

How to Easily Softmod ANY Fat PS2! | FreeMCBoot & FreeHDBoot Install Tutorial - YouTube
This tutorial has been requested for quite a long time but I waited so long because I was not too keen on the many install methods shown out there. A few recommendations to softmod a PS2 with FreeMCBoot normally include: finding a pre-modded console, using a disc swap trip, using Swap Magic, all of which could be a bit costly or time consuming. With this method all we need is one console and a few tools at our disposal! No swap tricks or discs, no pre-loaded memory card, no reliance on any other system!

This involves installing FreeHDBoot to a hard drive, loading it into the PS2 and using that as our entry point to install FreeMCBoot. That's it! No additional games needed and no need to open up our console!

How Archive.org items are structured | Internet Archive Blogs
An item is a logical “thing” that we present on one web page on archive.org. An item may be one video file along with scans of the DVD cover, one book, one audio file, or a set of audio files that represent a CD , etc.

How do you know whether your files should be in one item or separate items? You get one metadata file per item. If the same metadata describes ALL of the files (like a CD), then that’s one item. If the files are too different to have the same metadata (title, creator, description, etc.), they should be in different items.

CWSDPMI - Free DPMI provider for DOS
The CWSDPMI r7 release provides high performance access up to 4GB of physical memory using 4MB pages. You can download the r7 binary distribution or source distribution. View the r7 documentation or how to customize documentation. View the known problems with r7. The older r5 binary distribution is also available.

CWSDPMI was written to provide DPMI services for V2 of DJGPP. It does not support 16-bit DPMI applications, or DPMI applications requiring a built in extender. It does support virtual memory and hardware interrupt reflection from real mode to protected mode. DJGPP V1.1x and RSX applications will also run using this server, which can be used to provide enhanced control over hardware interrupts. Some DPMI 1.0 extensions (0x401, 0x506, 0x507, 0x508) have been implemented.

Power management - ArchWiki
Power management is a feature that turns off the power or switches system's components to a low-power state when inactive.

In Arch Linux, power management consists of two main parts:

* Configuration of the Linux kernel, which interacts with the hardware.
* Kernel parameters
* Kernel modules
* udev rules

* Configuration of userspace tools, which interact with the kernel and react to its events. Many userspace tools also allow to modify kernel configuration in a "user-friendly" way. See #Userspace tools for the options.

[SOLVED] Hibernate, 15.10, 16.04, Unity, systemd, tlp, wifi module reload, tuxonice
I thought I should share this in case anyone else has the similar problem and wants to know how to solve it. With the new systemd configuration, the Unity menu's "hibernate" option does not call on pm-hibernate. It instead uses the hibernate and sleep service of logind / systemd. I'm using a tuxonice kernel, and the tlp power management setup on a thinkpad w520, running Ubuntu 16.04 (devel). I think this article is still relevant even if you don't have tlp or tuxonice, since it's systemd that changes how suspend and hibernate work.

When this laptop suspends or hibernates, sometimes the wifi stops working when it wakes back up. The solution is to unload the wifi device driver module prior to sleep, and then reload it upon resume, the way the "hibernate" script does, and "pm-hibernate" also did.

Currently, TopMenu ships as a panel applet for either Mate 1.8, Xfce >= 4.8 (Gtk+2 versions only), or LXPanel. The Mate applet would be relatively easy to port to Gnome 2.

Gtk+2 is the preferred toolkit, albeit Gtk+3 is partially supported. Plugins are shipped for Qt 4 and some Mozilla apps (Firefox, Thunderbird and Zotero). Note that, except in the Gtk+ 3 case, menu bars will always be rendered using the Gtk+ 2 theme.

NDISwrapper - Wikipedia
NDISwrapper is a free software driver wrapper that enables the use of Windows XP network device drivers (for devices such as PCI cards, USB modems, and routers) on Linux operating systems. NDISwrapper works by implementing the Windows kernel and NDIS APIs and dynamically linking Windows network drivers to this implementation. As a result, it only works on systems based on the instruction set architectures supported by Windows, namely IA-32 and x86-64.

The telnet module communicates with VLC over a network connection using the telnet protocol. The original module was provided until 1.1.0, when it was re-written in Lua. The old module was renamed to oldtelnet and removed in 2.0.0.

Telnet should not be used for sensitive applications.

To find module information on the command-line for VLC 2.0.0 and above, use vlc -p lua --advanced --help-verbose and look for the Lua Telnet section.

(me: ndiswrapper fails to build when using kernel-headers >= 5.0 (on i686), then (even if patched) the 32-bit WinXP driver from NetGear does not work: ndiswrapper causes an "oops" because of the "nx" cpu protection bit; then, after disabling this (see another link saved today), ndiswrapper gives yet another error. Result (so far): failed).

Ubuntu - Fix for Slow Wireless Internet Connection Speed after upgrading to 11.04 Natty Narwhal - HitXP
Recently Ubuntu came out with its newest version 11.04 code named Natty Narwhal, and after upgrading my earlier 10.10 version Maverick to this new Version of Ubuntu, I faced my first real issue with Ubuntu in so many years – My USB Wireless Internet Connection speed had almost come to a standstill like a slow dial up connection after upgrading Ubuntu to 11.04! The connection was n times weaker than Windows based systems running on same wireless connection. Many a times it even simply dropped Internet connections. [...]

linux - How to turn off Wireless power management permanently - Unix & Linux Stack Exchange
Q: In Linux Mint 17.3 / 18 iwconfig says the power management of my wireless card is turned on. I want to turn it off permanently or some workaround on this issue.

sudo iwconfig wlan0 power off works, until I reboot the laptop.

Also, if I randomly check iwconfig, sometimes it's on, despite I did run this command. [...]

A #1: Open this file with your favorite text editor, I use nano here:

sudo nano /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf

By default there is:

[connection]
wifi.powersave = 3

Change the value to 2. Reboot for the change to take effect. [...]

exploit - How to disable NX on Linux - Super User
Q: I'm learning stack buffer overflow exploitation, and I later posted question Shellcode segmentation fault. about that executing shellcode from test program, or when injected to vulnerable program, causes segmentation violation. Now I found out that it might be caused by NX. When I search for this in dmesg I found this line:

[ 0.000000] NX (Execute Disable) protection: active

Serious HDMI Problems. What's that smell? Burning Raspberry! - Raspberry Pi Forums
Q: [...] I have just received my Neewer Black HDMI Input To VGA Adapter Converter For PC Laptop.

There was a post here: [...]

That reported it working and I have no reason to doubt that. However when I plugged mine in to my raspberry pi and VGA monitor the screen was black but lit i.e. the screen recognised a connection was present but wasn't receiving any data. A thin wisp of grey smoke appeared from the HDMI and the component labelled "D1" is looking like it has burn out. Suffice to say I very quickly removed it and all power! [...]

Tp smapi - ThinkWiki
The tp_smapi kernel module exposes some features of the ThinkPad hardware/firmware via a sysfs interface. Currently, the main implemented functionality is control of battery charging and extended battery status. The tp_smapi software package also includes an improved version of the HDAPS driver. The underlying hardware interfaces are SMAPI and direct access to the embedded controller.

Thinkpad-acpi - ThinkWiki
This is a Linux ACPI driver for the ThinkPad laptops written by Borislav Deianov, and currently maintained by Henrique de Moraes Holschuh and is included with the Linux kernel. It aims to support various features of these laptops which are accessible through the ACPI framework but not otherwise supported by the generic Linux ACPI drivers. As a kernel module, thinkpad-acpi works as a bridge to deliver information about certain hardware events like key presses or control the state of certain hardware features by software.

This driver uses undocumented features and direct hardware access, so it may work unreliably or even damage your hardware; but so far no such damage has been reported.

If you are installing on a recent Thinkpad that has an Ivy Bridge or newer processor (X230, T430, T530, etc.), tp_smapi will not work. You will be mostly limited to thinkpad-acpi capabilities. You can however set battery charge thresholds with tpacpi-bat.

linux-thinkpad/tp_smapi (Lenovo ThinkPad Laptops kernel module)
ThinkPad laptops include a proprietary interface called SMAPI BIOS (System Management Application Program Interface) which provides some hardware control functionality that is not accessible by other means.

This driver exposes some features of the SMAPI BIOS through a sysfs interface. It is suitable for newer models, on which SMAPI is invoked through IO port writes. Older models use a different SMAPI interface; for those, try the "thinkpad" module from the "tpctl" package.

WARNING: This driver uses undocumented features and direct hardware access. It thus cannot be guaranteed to work, and may cause arbitrary damage (especially on models it wasn't tested on).

mkottman/acpi_call: A linux kernel module that enables calls to ACPI methods through /proc/acpi/call. Now with support for Integer, String and Buffer parameters.
A kernel simple module that enables you to call ACPI methods by writing the method name followed by arguments to /proc/acpi/call.

This module is to be considered a proof-of-concept and has been superseeded by projects like bbswitch. It allows you to tamper with your system and should be used with caution.

Want to use acpi_call via graphic interface? [Click here]

FS#1960 : hostapd/netifd: multicast_to_unicast/hairpin not set for dynamic vlan, ap not in isolate mode
I noticed that multicast_to_unicast and hairpin_mode are not set on the dynamically created wlan interfaces, and the wireless ap is not running in isolate mode. This is because these interfaces are created by hostapd, unlike other wlan interfaces which are created from netifd/system-linux.

The attached patch fixes this:
- it sets ap_isolate for the hostapd interface, if the interface is using dynamic vlan
- it sets multicast_to_unicast and hairpin_mode after the dynamic interface is created

I haven’t handled the case where the isolate option is not set for the wifi interface, or where multicast_to_unicast is not set on the bridge, since this requires passing additional information to hostapd, and I wasn’t sure what the preferred way to do this would be. I’d probably overload the ap_isolate option to have value 2 mean that multicast_to_unicast and hairpin_mode should be set.

FS#714 : ARP/Broadcast does not reach other clients in the same WLAN
I have the default bridge with ethernet and WLAN in it. When i try to send data from a client to another, both connected to the same WLAN SSID, it doesn’t work (Destination unreachable).
Wireshark shows that it sends endless ARP requests to Broadcast, but the other clients in that WLAN never get it (and therefore can’t answer). The broadcast gets still delivery to every client connected through Ethernet. If i create a second WLAN SSID (even on the same adapter) and and add it to the bridge, it gets also all broadcast packets from the other WLAN...
So if i put the 2 clients in different WLAN SSIDs or ethernet they get the broadcast from each other, but not when both are connected to the same.

en:users:documentation:hostapd [Linux Wireless]
hostapd is an IEEE 802.11 AP and IEEE 802.1X/WPA/WPA2/EAP/RADIUS Authenticator. This page is dedicated to the Linux documentation of its implementation and use. Please refer to the hostapd home page for information for other Operating Systems.

To communicate with a kernel driver, hostapd has to use some interface. All new cfg80211 (and mac80211) based drivers that implement AP functionality are supported using the nl80211 interface.
