Git - Environment Variables
Git always runs inside a bash shell, and uses a number of shell environment variables to determine how it behaves. Occasionally, it comes in handy to know what these are, and how they can be used to make Git behave the way you want it to. This isn’t an exhaustive list of all the environment variables Git pays attention to, but we’ll cover the most useful.

How to View Colored Man Pages in Linux
[...] By default, the man program normally uses a terminal pager program such as more or less to format its output, and the default view is normally in white color for every kind of text (bold, underlined etc..).

You can make some tweaks to your ~/.bashrc file to get nicely colored man pages by specifying a color scheme using various LESS_TERMCAP variables. [...]

systemd Environment File | systemd with CoreOS
systemd has an Environment directive which sets environment variables for executed processes. It takes a space-separated list of variable assignments. This option may be specified more than once in which case all listed variables will be set. If the same variable is set twice, the later setting will override the earlier setting. If the empty string is assigned to this option, the list of environment variables is reset, all prior assignments have no effect. Environments directives are used in built-in Container Linux systemd units, for example in etcd2 and flannel.

amazon web services - Is there a way to export an AWS CLI Profile to Environment Variables? - Stack Overflow
Q: When working with certain third-party tools like Terraform, it's not easily possible to specify an AWS CLI profile, and I like working with the environment variables better than the profiles.

Is there a way for me to have the AWS CLI simply export the current profile as AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID and AWS_SECRET_KEY environment variables to my session?

Normally, no environment variables need to be set. Most of the environment variables used by Mesa/Gallium are for debugging purposes, but they can sometimes be useful for debugging end-user issues.

WineHQ - Setting Windows/DOS environment variables
Your program might require some environment variable to be set properly in order to run successfully. In this case you need to set this environment variable in the Linux shell, since Wine will pass on the entire shell environment variable settings to the Windows environment variable space. TERM strings | Arabesque
All terminal emulators are not created equal. Certainly, not all of them are xterm(1), although many other terminal emulators do a decent but not comprehensive job of copying it. The value of the TERM environment variable is used by the system running the shell to determine what the terminal connecting to it can and cannot do, what control codes to send to the program to use those features, and how the shell should understand the input of certain key codes, such as the Home and End keys. These things in particular are common causes of frustration for new users who turn out to be using a forced TERM string.

HowTo: Have an application use a different GTK theme (Page 1) / Tips, Tricks & Scripts / CrunchBang Linux Forums
If you have an application which isn't playing nicely with gtk themes, or you just want eg a particular panel background colour for one application, then the theme can be set on a per-application basis. Since gtk3 breaks something after nearly every release, you can keep a theme you like for most things, and specify one that works for just for the application that is broken. [...]

Igor Babuschkin - Renew environment variables in tmux
When working with terminal multiplexers like tmux, one really annoying problem is the fact that environment variables like SSH_AUTH_SOCK and DISPLAY get outdated when reattaching to a session. This means that you can’t connect to the ssh-agent (in the case of SSH_AUTH_SOCK) or use X forwarding (in the case of DISPLAY) unless you open up a new pane.
