Maps Of Modern Cities Drawn In The Style Of J.R.R. Tolkien
The maps J.R.R. Tolkien drew to accompany his tales are their own form of story, sketching out the boundaries of his imagined worlds. But could our own, real cities be just as dramatic a fantasy setting? The answer is yes.

In our show-and-tell thread today, commenter and assistant geography professor at Pennsylvania's Slippery Rock University Stentor Danielson showed us these Tokien-inspired maps he's been working on which, though inspired by fantasy, use real landmark and geographic cues to show us a slightly different take on mapping our cities.

An artist is reimagining the UK’s national parks in the style of J.R.R. Tolkien’s maps - The Verge
To start his maps, Bell says that he works from an open source Ordnance Survey map, and begins drawing by hand. “I try to emulate his typeface as closely as possible, but have modified his mountains in an effort to develop a little bit of my own style.” He adds in additional details, such as forests, Hobbit holes, towers, and castles.

It's Hard to Make Money as a Bear | Morningstar
The problem came with capital gains. Inevitably, such funds were late returning to the market, often so late as to not return at all. Getting back into equities after raising cash is a psychologically difficult task. The investor misses the early part of the recovery while awaiting evidence that the rally is genuine; then, awaits a decline that will provide an attractive entry point; then (typically) waits even longer.

Coronavirus: The Hammer and the Dance - Tomas Pueyo - Medium
On one side, countries can go the mitigation route: create a massive epidemic, overwhelm the healthcare system, drive the death of millions of people, and release new mutations of this virus in the wild.
On the other, countries can fight. They can lock down for a few weeks to buy us time, create an educated action plan, and control this virus until we have a vaccine.
Governments around the world today, including some such as the US, the UK or Switzerland have so far chosen the mitigation path.

How Much Should People Have Saved In Their 401Ks At Different Ages
Just imagine 30 years from now, the government deciding to raise penalty free 401k withdrawal to age 75 from 59.5? Unfortunately, you need the money at age 60, and because you withdraw, the government imposes a 30% penalty on top of the taxes you have to pay. Don’t think it can’t happen. Expect it to happen!

The only thing you can count on is after-tax money you’ve invested or saved. This is why after maxing out your 401k, it’s good to open up an after-tax brokerage account where you can consistently contribute a percentage of your paycheck each month. Your goal should be to then build as many passive income streams as possible.

Yield curve pioneer Campbell Harvey says coronavirus makes recession likely — Quartz
Harvey, a professor at Duke University, says the yield curve was signaling a “soft landing” recession last year, but the spread of Covid-19 has “completely changed the story.” Quartz spoke to Harvey about what the yield curve is predicting, record low interest rates, and ways that the government can support the economy as supply chains are disrupted, and workers and travelers stay home. The conversation has been edited and condensed for clarity.

What Is the VIX Telling Us? - The Big Picture
4. Buying into a deepening sell off is much harder than you believe: “Everyone wants to be a contrarian” could be my favorite sentence of all time. How many traders wish they could hold their emotions to one side, follow a few charts, and buy into the market lows? Even if you had a magic indicator, you are very unlikely to be capable of holding your emotions at bay to pull the trigger. Humans are social herd primates, a species that evolved over time with group cooperation as a survival strategy. You have been wired to not fight the crowd, and it is incredibly uncomfortable to do so.

Use the VIX to Make Your Buys: The VIX charts nearby give us a sense of exactly how much fear is occurring in the market right now. Some of this is as function of what we don’t know; some is simply a recognition that corporate revenues and profits are going to be pressured, perhaps deeply pressured, for at least a month quarter, and perhaps much longer. The chart below shows that the market did not bottom until months after the VIX peaked in October 2008. However, in 2018, the collapse of the VXN notes caused the VIX to rise in February, but it did not peak until the Q4 sell off in 2018. Of the 5 VIX spikes on the chart (se nearby table), 1 bottomed 91 days after VIX peak, another 29 days after. The other 3 were within 1 day of the VIX peak.

6. Never pull the goalie. The risk-off portion of your strategic asset allocation – most likely comprising some combination of long-term government bonds, short-term government bonds (or cash), TIPS, gold and municipal bonds, has done it’s job since the stock market’s peak. Long-term Treasurys in particular have gone literally vertical as yields have plunged. As improbable as bonds had looked for forward returns at the end of 2019, they have worked spectacularly well during the recent panic. These segments of your asset allocation are there to play defense for you. They come to represent the dry powder – so that when you rebalance into stocks that have gotten killed, you have somewhere to take the capital from that has performed well. Do this systematically over time and volatility’s effects have been negated. Our goalie, in addition to strategic holdings in these risk off assets, is literally called Goaltender. It’s a rules-based, tactical portfolio strategy that we use in differing amounts to help our clients reduce risk, lower exposure to volatility and remain calm in times like these. While we never publicly discuss how it works or its current positioning, you can read a little bit more about it here or talk to us about it here.

What Happens to Stocks After a Big Down Month? - A Wealth of Common Sense
Every investor is told to buy low and sell high. But most don’t realize that buy low typically works out to buy low, then buy lower, then buy even lower, and once you really hate yourself, buy lower than you thought was possible.

This is the low part of buy low. We’re in it. I don’t know how many pegs lower we have to go (if any). No one does.

The (potentially) good news is the lower we go the higher the expected returns should be

Restoration Hardware Catalogs Won’t Die - The Atlantic
I have to pick up,” Davison says. “It’s invasive, but it’s welcome.” Davison has a vested interest in the future of the format, of course, but his claims are borne out by research suggesting that even though catalogs typically arrive unbidden, consumers find them less presumptuous and irritating than marketing emails. “The internet is too much like work,” Davison says, while catalogs feel more like play. “The internet is great if you know what you’re looking for,” he adds, “but it’s a lousy browsing vehicle.” Instead of being followed around online for days by ads for a product you already ordered (or considered and ruled out), you can peruse catalogs at your leisure and disengage fully when you’re done. It’s so analog, it almost feels wholesome.

Why Market Timing Can Be So Appealing – Of Dollars And Data
As you can see, this strategy only buys when the market is in some sort of an uptrend and accumulates cash in between (since it “knows” that a lower future price is coming).

But, despite having information about future prices, the “Absolute-Bottom” buying strategy only outperforms by an unimpressive 22% (or 0.4% annually) from 1970-2019 (Note: Both strategies invest the same $12,623 (or $1 per trading day) over the time period shown):

If you are using Windows, some of the above commands may not work out-of-the-box.

A quick solution may be to preface every Python command with python -m like this:

python -m pip install mkdocs
python -m mkdocs
For a more permanent solution, you may need to edit your PATH environment variable to include the Scripts directory of your Python installation. Recent versions of Python include a script to do this for you. Navigate to your Python installation directory (for example C:\Python34\), open the Tools, then Scripts folder, and run the file by double clicking on it. Alternatively, you can download the script and run it (python

The Stunning Problem With The 4% Retirement Income Rule In One Chart
What do you notice in this third scenario? A lot more red. Again, the average annual return is the same across all three scenarios (5.50%), but look at what happens. You run out of money in year 15. How is that possible?

The reason is that when your portfolio experienced negative returns early on, it was never able to recover even with the high returns later on. Basically, your portfolio got stuck in a hole, and with the $40,000 withdrawals each year, it was too little and too late. This is obviously not the outcome you want in retirement.

Are there strategies to help mitigate this risk? Yes, but the lesson here is to recognize that the order of investment returns matters a great deal in retirement. Creating a safe retirement income distribution plan is not as simple as following the 4% rule. This is why Nobel Prize winner, William Sharpe, said retirement income planning is “The hardest and nastiest problem in finance.” While it may not be simple or easy, it is imperative if you want a lifetime stream of income.

In upcoming Forbes articles, I will discuss several strategies to reduce the sequence of returns risk.

How to Write a Book in Your Spare Time - A Wealth of Common Sense
Temptation bundling. Katherine Milkman, a behavioral researcher from the University of Pennsylvania, came up with a great idea to force yourself to do something when willpower is waning.

It’s called temptation bundling which combines something unpleasant with an indulgence to make it easier to get the hard stuff done.

In Milkman’s study, they gave people an audiobook uploaded onto an iPod and told them to listen to it at the gym while working out. Some subjects could only listen to the book while at the gym while others were free to listen at their leisure.

Those who had the constraint of only listening while at the gym ended up going to the gym and working out more.

This is similar to something my colleague Nick Maggiulli does. If Nick buys an expensive pair of shoes he forces himself to put an equal amount into his investment account.

Are there annual limits on inheritances or gifts to a child?
This is called the small gift exemption. And it is individualised. That means for instance that, assuming both parents are alive, each could gift the same child €3,000 per year with no tax issues.

As long as your annual small gift is at or below €3,000, there is no return required and you do not have to declare the amount, regardless of whether you are self-employed or in PAYE employment.

One final thing, which I am sure you know but just in case. The €335,000 lifetime limit is cumulative and relates to all inheritances (and gifts over the €3,000 limit) from either parent.

The ROI of snacks: How companies track the impact of free food in the office - Digiday
In the fall of 2018, rumors flew among employees of online publisher The avocados in the office were getting progressively “sadder,” the snack shipments were getting smaller and less frequent and the coffee had been switched out for a cheap brand that tasted terrible. That could only mean one thing: layoffs were coming.

“People definitely noticed when the snack supplies were running low,” one former staffer said, adding that many people took it as a sign of “impending doom”.

That November the company laid off most of its staff, and announced a sale to Bustle Digital Group.

Free food, snacks and beverages are now a staple at many media and marketing-related companies. Their prevalence has even become something of an economic indicator of the health of the sector: If the flow of chips and fruit-flavored seltzer starts to slow, brace for a downturn.

But for companies picking up the tab for food, drinks and other convenience perks, justifying such expenses has typically been more of an art than a science. Conventional wisdom says catering, massage services and the like might help retain staffers and boost employee engagement and collaboration. But employers have no clear-cut metrics for assessing this.

Did Donald Trump and Iran Use Twitter to Prevent a War? | WIRED
Neither Trump nor Zarif tweeted again all night. After weeks of frenetic activity on Twitter by the president, a hundred or more a day sometimes, Trump’s 13-hour silence on Twitter by the time he took the stage at the White House Wednesday morning marked one of his longest periods of online calm since the start of the Ukraine scandal in the fall.

In those remarks, Trump underscored the message of the previous night's tweets: Tensions with Iran would remain high. Sanctions would increase. But for now, there will be no war

Curveball Clarity - The Belle Curve
Question 1

Imagine that you are financially secure, that you have enough money to take care of your needs now and in the future. How would you live your life? Would you change anything? Don’t hold back on your dreams. Describe your ideal life. Consider in detail how you would spend the years, months, weeks, and days.

Question 2

You are still completely financially secure, but you visit your doctor who tells you that you have 5-10 years left to live. You will not be in pain or limited in any way by this disease, but it has limited your time on earth. What will you do with your remaining time? Would you change your life and how?

Question 3

Now your doctor tells you that you have one day left to live. Notice the feelings that arise as you confront your mortality. What dreams were left unfulfilled? What did you miss?

I have done this exercise twice. The first time, question three made it abundantly clear that I missed having children. My son was born about a year later. The second time precipitated my move to Ritholtz Wealth Management. Both times have been life changing, but the process requires some deep soul searching and can lead to painful decisions.

Project #4209: Bear Stearns – Clearing the Fog
The behavior edge is based around understanding the difference between the “wisdom of crowds” and the “madness of crowds”. The wisdom of crowds requires diversity of opinion among market participants. Wisdom flips to madness when diversity of opinion is removed. The tech bubble of 1999 of a good example of the madness of crowds while the current bull market is a good example of the wisdom of crowds. Even at $30, it could be argued that there was still strong diversity of opinion around BSC given that the average target price was $93.

Chris Perruna's Stocks to Watch 2020
I posted an abbreviated list of “Stocks to Watch 2020” on January 1st prior to completing my detailed analysis but now it is complete and pasted below. All stock prices quoted are from January 1, 2020.

I received questions on social media asking why I didn’t include the FAANG stocks and other big-time names that normally dominate the headlines. The annual “Stocks to Watch” list typically includes new and up-coming growth stocks that I own or candidates I am looking to own. Stocks such as AAPL, AMZN, GOOGL, MSFT, FB, V, MA, etc. should be owned in almost every portfolio already, whether in your active trading account or a more passive retirement account. Own those stocks as they will all likely double or triple over time, once again. Own an index fund as well and add dollars to it annually, during up and down years – just do it and check back in 30 years.

UI/UX Designers
Vetted talent sites. The best example here is Toptal[1]. You find great UX/UI design talent -Toptal claims to accept only the top 3% of applicants into the platform-, and additionally, you would interact with a team -composed of a sales representative and a talent matcher- that understands your business and recommends few candidates that fit what you are looking for. Also, there is a trial period and a money-back guarantee. Normally you get a set of candidates within 24h.
Unvetted talent sites: e.g. Upwork. The problem with these ones is the lemons problem; it’s difficult to find and choose an experienced, highly qualified engineer that fits your team, your project, your budget, and your time zone. Good luck navigating hundreds of applications of people from all over the place regarding location, quality, rate, etc. And they all have the commonality that all claim to be the perfect fit for you. The outcome here is unclear. You may be lucky and work with a great designer, or the opposite.
Agencies: there are many out there. They tend to be (very) expensive, have a structured working style, and you aren’t guaranteed a successful outcome. If you can afford to work with a top firm, good for you.
Job boards/ LinkedIn. Mixed success to find UI/UX talent here. You need to go through a formal, time-consuming recruiting process with an unclear outcome.

We've Been Thinking About Boredom All Wrong
I thought I was onto something a few years ago with “boregasm,” a term I invented to describe the feeling you get when you’re trapped in some dull meeting, conversation or perhaps inscrutable religious ceremony, and you’re forced to stifle a big old yawn. In doing so, sometimes, if you’re lucky, the yawn will kind of rebound at the back of your throat and wash back down internally, flooding your nervous system with undeniably pleasant tingles. Not sexy ones, admittedly — still boring ones — but pleasant nonetheless.

Heard of bitcoin's 'halving'? It's set to shake crypto markets in 2020 - Reuters

This time around, seven crypto traders and miners interviewed by Reuters said the May halving would probably lead to greater volatility and trading volumes. However the cut to supply is liked to be more priced in than previously, they said, with many traders already geared up for the upcoming event.

In rural Colorado, the kids of coal miners learn to install solar panels — High Country News – Know the West
In Colorado’s North Fork Valley, solar energy — along with a strong organic farm economy and recreation dollars — is helping to fill the economic hole left by the dying coal industry, which sustained the area for more than 120 years. When the mines still ran, graduating seniors could step immediately into good-paying jobs. But in the past five years, two of Delta County’s three mines have closed. Approximately 900 local mining jobs have been lost in the past decade. Ethan Bates, for example, another senior in the solar energy training class, is the son of a mine foreman who lost his job when the Bowie Mine outside Paonia closed in 2016. Now, he’ll graduate as a certified solar panel installer.

6 Tips for Writing Compelling Bullet Points
Psychology tells us that emotions drive our behavior, while logic justifies our actions after the fact. Marketing confirms this theory -- humans associate the same personality traits with brands as they do with people. Choosing between two alternatives is like choosing your best friend or significant other. We go with the option that makes us feel something.

This is also the reason why pitching a product’s features is a lousy attempt at persuasion. Features only appeal to the logical part of your brain, which we know doesn’t drive action nearly as well as appealing to the emotional part of your brain does.

How To Value Interest Rate Swaps
A wide variety of swaps are utilized in finance in order to hedge risks, including interest rate swaps, credit default swaps, asset swaps, and currency swaps. An interest rate swap is a contractual agreement between two parties agreeing to exchange cash flows of an underlying asset for a fixed period of time. The two parties are often referred to as counterparties and typically represent financial institutions. Vanilla swaps are the most common type of interest rate swaps. These convert floating interest payments into fixed interest payments and vice versa.

Ideal candidates for the team should have at least three years of direct experience in the area of biopharmaceuticals.  Most members of the team have worked at biopharmaceutical companies at the corporate level, usually in areas such as marketing, business intelligence, medical affairs, etc. Alternatively, candidates may come from consulting firms that have consulted to biopharmaceutical companies, or they may have worked in a similar financial role already either on the "buyside" or "sell-side" in the healthcare/therapeutics space.

While many of our past hires have their MBAs, this is not a prerequisite - we are less concerned with a candidate's financial knowledge, and are more concerned that they have a broad-based, solid understanding of the complexities of the biopharmaceutical industry. Many of our previous hires have also held advanced degrees (PhDs, MDs) in a scientific area relevant to the job, but this is not a requirement.

A solid understanding of Excel, Power Point, and Word are essential, as are good written and verbal skills.

Interested candidates may send a resume and cover letter to  the Director of Research, at

How the Dumb Design of a WWII Plane Led to the Macintosh  | WIRED
User friendliness is simply the fit between the objects around us and the ways we behave. So while we might think that the user-friendly world is one of making user-friendly things, the bigger truth is that design doesn’t rely on artifacts; it relies on our patterns. The truest material for making new things isn’t aluminum or carbon fiber. It’s behavior. And today, our behavior is being shaped and molded in ways both magical and mystifying, precisely because it happens so seamlessly.

How One Startup Is Trying to Help Car Dealers Weather Hailstorms
Understory, a weather-tech startup in Madison, Wisconsin, has a plan to bring down costs and offer dealers a lifeline, according to co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Alex Kubicek. The company is set to announce on Tuesday that it will begin selling Hail Safe, an insurance policy for auto dealers that uses on-the-ground data. Understory makes a small weather station called a “dot” that can measure hail in minute detail. Dealers who purchase Hail Safe will install a dot on their lot and pay an annual premium, then receive an automatic payout if the sensor detects a hailstorm that meets an agreed-upon threshold. The payout happens regardless of actual damage.
